I will be 75 in Nov. so I am a couple of yrs. behind you (according to your comment date). Either way, I have been a Doors fan throughout their career, short as it was. I have all of their albums and also have them on C/D's and listen to them often. My favorite album is "American Prayer". Not only for the music, but it demonstrated Jim Morrison's poetic creativity. Have you read the book "No One Here Get's Out Alive"?

At this time in the 60s and early 70s I was a singer and our band would end with this song or "The End" every night. I can still sing it word for word at age 70. We had a great light show and the lights would follow me every step of the way, strobe lights and all. It was a lifetime experience. Great music!

Very hard call... but no doubt it’s a juggernaut. Seamless, big pic, epic scale force of nature beast of a song. I love riders and the end too on the same level but this may have been their most potent punch of lyrics and sound.... the brothers had it right, this song launched a lot of ships. Consider this was being performed in the whisky in the summer of 66. Nobody at that point was doing stuff this potent and challenging, not even Floyd. The doors had a big impact on zep and Floyd imo. Morrison was inconsistent and destructive and that hurt them some legacy wise. Also they alienated many from them in the industry. But I will always say this, when he was dialed in, there was no bigger and dangerous force I rock from 66-68 then this cat. Singular epic when they got it right.

What did your peers say when this first leaking out to ears... I’m a big history and music buff, in late 67 (it was actually played live in 66),there was nothing with this crucible raw potency combined with such well structured poetic lyrics. Dylan blonde on blonde is an icredible lyrical and sound achievement. Pet sounds, are you experienced, velvets 1st album. All landmark. But this is even more potent, raw, yet expansive. Jaw drop I would think when first heard... you were lucky to come up in such a great era... what was the early take on the doors and thismthat first year of their reign?

In the 60’s when the Doors came along, everyone loved them because they took you on a special journey. The lyrics were not always about live and peace. They were often more introspective and sometimes dark. It made people think deeper about Life. They played a lot at the Whiskey A Go-Go in LA. They had a huge following, they had big hits on the radio, and Jim Morrison was considered an American poet and a real sex symbol of his time. Lyrics are awesome! He always pushed everyone to the edge. Super popular, and they became somewhat of a psychedelic band. And yes, they helped usher in progressive rock, along with a few other bands. Everyone mourned him when he died. He is buried in Paris, same cemetery as composer Frederick Chopin and Oscar Wild and artist Claud Monet…as he should be!

Wow, great reaction guys. Brings back memories of driving around late at night in the back of a friend's van, smoking doobs and listening to When the Music's Over and the rest of Strange Days. I also got to see them live before Morrison started acting really crazy and getting arrested. I've seen many of the great classic groups - Led Zeppelin, Cream, Hendrix, Stones, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, The Who, etc. And as much as I Ioved all of those concerts, there was something electrifying about The Doors that I never felt with any other band.

Some artist act like they’re “crazy” or “out there “. In my opinion, it wasn’t an act with Jim Morrison. Came through in the music. Awesome, original band. One mission, blow your mind.

I forgot about this band. Unique sound. Guitarist is Robbie Krieger - way underrated. Only plays with his fingers - no pick. His solo is what people call "free jazz".

For your info, The Doors were not underrated in their time....🌳 I personally fell in love with Jim's voice and their music 🎵 the first time I heard Waiting for the Sun that a neighbor gave me. I was 13... They exploded on the rock scene the day Break on through was heard on the radio...now known as the best 1st album of All Time.... Definitely NOT underrated... I could tell many stories related to the Doors...🎸 his tomb in Paris, is the most visited place in Père Lachaise cemetery...

It’s beyond drugs. It’s visceral raw power. It’s why so many in nam, magnated to this band. It was the only thing that made sense. And most of those guy were in tight situations where they couldn’t be high.... morrison used drugs, but it’s overblown hype wise. He was more a boozer anyway... point is, this is just raw potent power. One doesn’t need to be high to thourougly enjoy this. In fact it’s vigoraying to get power like this from a song and not have to seek temporary fleeting ways to rearrange your col Train.

@@kelvinkloud literally there are ways to get a euphoric high from music. One who eats a healthy diet and gets plenty of sleep(just overall lives a good lifestyle) will be able to produce healthy dopamine rushes. It’s the drugs that screw up your brain. And people think they need drugs to enhance their listening experience. That’s flat out wrong lol

Well, these boys really have good taste. On the one hand, watching two guys from Georgia listening and reacting to When the Music's Over is almost like a set up for a Saturday Night Live routine (see 9:10). On the other hand, its great to see younger people appreciating this music as When the Music's Over is one of the greatest songs in the history of rock, psychedelic, popular music or whatever. I think people will be rocking Doors music 100 years from now and beyond. Great to see things I listened to 50 years ago stand the test of time. Rock on gentlemen. Best from the USA.
