Who really knows , im not sure what’s in this product, I’m Not even sure if he’s bullshitting me to see if I’m being objective in my trials, because I’m sure he has done that
As a has been extension agricultural engineer, your deeply valuable insight that getting sound knowledge from the known state to the application state requires a lot of intentional effort. You are doing it. Thank you.
We need our governing bodies to step up and support these initiatives. We do need more new and improved nutritional and bee health alternatives. If there’s anyway you all need support on the ground. I’m sure if you just ask you have an army of beekeepers ready to support you both.
I would be curious to see a study of feeding the rocket fuel to your queen production. What affect is has? Are the queens living longer? Are they breeding up sooner and more prolific? Would that, is that passed on to those queens drones for the next round of mating?
Last year during honey season my bees were very aggressive and I mean very aggressive them in the fall they’re not so bad do you have any tips about this? Thanks I love your channel and I become a bee keeper because of you
Five to ten years ago I was told that Monsanto spent $1.2 million per day on corn research to provide better hybrids of corn to farmers. Who knows how much the other companies were spending on top of Monsanto's spending. I don't know how we could get big dollars for bee research.
Thanks for sharing, have you ever experimented with giving the bees a couple hrs of low light for a possible queen stimulant when your a wk or so away from putting them outside but when it’s still cold enough to keep them in the boxes. To possibly get them to start brooding up with a wk or so jump start?
Actually, I don’t think I have seen him talk on your channel, and I have watched almost all of your videos for the last 3 years. Don’t know how I missed it.
It seems like there should be 4 groups: One with nothing, one with enhanced patties only, one with the new 'xxx' only, and one with enhanced patties and the 'xxx'. Otherwise, the results cannot be conclusively attributed to 'xxx' because the enhanced patties were also a variable. Or, alternatively, both test groups should get the same enhanced patties, one with and one without the new 'xxx'. Good luck - can't wait to see the results!
@@hootervillehoneybees8664 but at 8:30 he reads that the control gets straight syrup and no bio-activator, and the test group gets both bio-activator *and* the new anti-viral. That's two variables, and makes the results useless - at least from a scientific perspective.
Hey @@andrewmunn3499, nice to hear from you. I have a packet of your bio-control right here that's waiting to used as soon as I can feed (I'm in a nasty climate zone on the West edge of Calgary and there's still 18" of snow in some parts of my backyard). I understand that it might be part of the treatment, but if the new 'xxx' formulation is the variable you're wanting to test (via syrup), then one test hive having 'xxx' & bio-activator and the other test hive having neither seems like a flawed test to me. At a minimum, there should be a 3rd test group that has bio-activator and no 'xxx' formula, and you would expect/hope to see an incremental benefit between each of the three. It may be part of the new treatment, but it *also* is a variable. Or perhaps I missed something: I respect your deep knowledge here - the video of your 'deep dive' chat was very interesting. All the best.
@@dsandbrand BIO-Activator + XXX is the variable I want to test, they have complementary nutritional profiles. That is why the treatment group has both, it is not a mistake, or flawed logic (bio-activator + xxx = treatment). I am privy to a few details that you are not regarding this endeavor;)… Proof of concept, then - pending initial findings, on to larger scale trials. 24 colonies per group is the minimum to put weight behind the findings. However, one step at a time... Very much appreciated that your trying Bio-control David - sincerely. Please note, our proposition is that honey bees have two nutritive sources (Pollen/nectar), and have formulated bio-control / bio-activator to mimic those nutritional profiles - with the intention of simultaneous application to mimic the mid-late spring nutritional cues that nature provides. Best regards David, and thanks again.
Ian what breed of corn were you using for your glutton mix? I remember you asking Kamon what corn he had in a bin, the bees appeared to be tearing into it. Thank you Ian. Side note. I wonder if bleach in our syrup helps with gut health, same Nosema? Seems odd that no one has looked into it. That I know of.
I watch almost every video of yours. I try to think about the labor, electric cost and setup cost with your shed. I just wonder if you could get better results with a keeping the bees outside, stacking and wrapping. Have you tried that? I did not see a video on it, if you did.
Have you ever considered turning the lights on for a short time to let the bee's go on cleansing flights. It would be a mess and some bee's will get lost but it might help.
In Germany the Bayern company has a big bee research centre including a isolated island for study’s with various universities for the specific honeybees agriculture including breed technology, to be honest I never visited it but England is very enthusiastic about it, and best queen results.
hello Ian I'm in Poland and after the season we use isolation of queen bees and special insulators for 25 days after that you can treat the colonies, some people isolate all the queens for the whole winter and release them in March and you can also treat the bees again because there are no brood at all, have you heard about this method? you can also isolate the mother 25 days before the end of the flow, and then we take the honey and treat it immediately, then the winter generation will be healthy
If there are good results, How will you know if it it was do to the bio activator or the stuff in the packet since the control group only has sugar syrup
A valid trial would suggest you have a larger number (perhaps 10) hives in each group. If you only use 3 in each, a failure in just one hive (for reasons other than virus) eliminates 1/3 of the trial group. At the end of the trial period, you can then select 3 of the hives from each group for testing. I suspect your friend would prefer to not to have to pay for viral testing on more than 6 hives because of the high cost it would incur.
Better to ask for forgiveness than permission....that was my sales managers favorite line to tell a prospective buyer of an atv or motorcycle....sure made guys think lol...and my wife says I use that concept a bit much !
"I'm going to feed 2 colonies anyway just to see what happens." Hopefully it's not going to be a literal shit show >.< Supporting this guy, who is obviously a genius where it comes to bee nutrition is a contribution that is just as important as the development of the product. Making an idea a reality is difficult and help realizing it priceless. Even if this trial "fails" the data will be important in fine tuning the product. Really glad to see you help him :)
Not exactly easy keeping bees in New Brunswick . Rains and snows no sun shine. Great area for commercial fishing operations or guided hunts moose bear caribou bees nope.. looking like your go next week. I think mother nature finally going to give us a break. Just started to see little real pollen today.. going to bust wide open next week talking high 60s and 70s sun shine is coming.. need to get that apivar in this week. Everyone seems heavy we had warm winter.. nuc sales are down 90% means will do more honey. Think in the long run I'll make more doing honey..
my thought as a carnivore is sugar is fine and dandy for the bees as long as they are active. when people eat plants-sugar they get fat and unhealthy if they sit around. you see this idea of probiotics is garbage and its laughable at best. humans take probiotics so they can continue to eat plants and plants are the reason people use probiotics. sure, humans and bees both eat carbs and protein, but the thing is plants have the same cell structure as protein and your gut allows it to pass through your digestive system thus causing every sickness knows to man. just a side note why do bees take in pollen after winter is it to rear bees or to fix their gut from eating sugar all winter, I would guess it's a combination of both. also, carnivores don't crap very much.
Interesting stuff. Lots of antiviral medications being put out for humans these days, may be something to it.

I’d argue so
Tip of the spear stuff here, love it

Easy for me to say! I’d need to have him elaborate on those trials , but that’s a great idea

I've heard putting food grade Demetrius earth in the open feed like chickens helps with mites.
At least the bees would not do dirt baths to rid their mites or even if they care being their short life like chickens

Probably 500 of fan electric costs ,

Been mixing, packing and stacking patties for the last 2 days. I can assure you, your not missing out on a lot of fun. I know you know this. Lol

Being stacked so tight, they would not make it back. Also, they would collect on the window or lights

If only they could come up with a miteacide you could feed to bees via syrup
not sure about feeding them in the shed , maybe you should have moved them outside on the pad
Yes I could do that too. Just we have yet to get flight weather
We gotta get you a lab coat, a crazy wig & a stethoscope Ian.... You need to work on your mad scientist laugh~
Ha I just ordered While Lab coat to wear during an upcoming talk on Recent Bee discoveries - no stethoscope but now your idea of a "wig" is great -
Having visions of 1500 hives eliminating 5 months worth of gut-rot in the shed. I think burning the shed would become a serious option
