Tesla Trip to Italy | Fully Charged

  • In August this year me and the Mrs drove from Gloucestershire to Northern Italy and back in the tesla Model S 85. It was a holiday, I didn't record the whole thing, that would have been tedious, boring and my Mrs has an impressive left hook. However these are the highlights and I'm sure I'll get comments about the highest road pass in Europe.

    I love this guy! =) He really opens the door for all the average folks on youtube to see what being "fully charged" can do for average everyday people! I recently (1 yr ago) bought a Toyota Prius as my everyday car and it was my introduction into electric vehicles. My friends make fun of me and I always have to defend myself BUT... what is the impact it has on my pocket book? weekly? monthly? yearly? AMAZING!
    We also have an SUV in our driveway. Every time I put gas in it I feel like I am literally giving cash away to some homeless guy who is going to take the money and buy drugs and alcohol. I feel like I am wasting money big time! Today, my girl constantly takes my hybrid instead! I suppose it is because she knows she can drive it all over the universe and throw 10 bucks in it and its at half tank again! She knows I wont complain even if she does leave it empty. Five dollars will take me 140 miles minimum (@ 2 usd per gallon).
    This is the future... especially when the lithium air battery is finally commercialized and perfected. I dream about the ICE (internal combustion engine) fading into history. Electric power for vehicles is still not at its climax but will reach it in my generation (I am 38 yrs old). One hundred years from now... people will look back on ICE vehicles and laugh and poke fun... yet today, my friends poke fun... because it is different... it is smart. Eventually... it will be cool and widely accepted.
    Like this video... I took a road trip across half the United States recently in my hybrid. The money I saved on gas... I used to enjoy nice hotels, food, entertainment, and much more.

      +Dust N Fly Your hybrid gets 50mpg, electric vehicles like the Tesla get 100+mpge. Compared to your hybrid it is again doubling your efficiency and halving your costs.

      what is your measured fuel economy? currently I drive a Metro; Prius C looks nice but it'll probably be another 5-15 years before I am considering buying 2010 model years.

      +paulwesterberg seriously, working on/driving old beaters, cars that don't have power windows, power locks, power steering, etc etc are so much more reliable and so much more a pleasure to maintain......

    There's a certain amount of charming nerdiness in anticipating the 'world's biggest charger.' It was the shades that tipped me you were in Italy. Envious so many wonderful places are within striking ;distance, and Gloucestershire is nothing to sneeze at either, as I recall. You are officially living a charmed life, sir.

    I find it annoying that such a trip is yet to be possible in Australia. We have three Supercharges here. Three. Two of which are in the same city. And I'm not sure if everyone's aware, but Australia is quite large, and three isn't quite enough.

    • @paulwesterberg
      @paulwesterberg 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Billiamiscool There is a temporary 2 bay charger Euroa this week. The last two/three weeks saw two superchargers opening at Goldburn, NSW and Wodonga, Vic while another permanent SC is about to begin construction at Gundagai, NSW to connect Melbourne with Sydney (and Canberra) properly. Tesla is aiming to have 9 supercharger stations in eastern Australia this year, and 15 by the end of next year.
      www.teslamotors.com/supercharger
      There is also an adapter available for Chademo DC chargers which are available in most major cities and along the southwest coast.

      +Billiamiscool The market is very tiny for such a small vast country you need to think of that firstly. Then you need to realise that the majority of Australians do not actually do road trips anymore to go to cities especially when they can afford a Tesla, they are far more likely to fly to each city than drive.

    Happy to hear you had a successful trip. I am taking the family to the UK for 2 weeks leaving Zurich on the 4th of October and heading for the Tunnel with a stop over at a hotel in Belgium that has a supercharger in the car park. Eurotunnel for us too and then to Gosport to pick up my Mum and then on to a small village called Mark in Somerset.
    All in the Tesla and looking forward to it.
    Oh! and also joined the Ecotricity scheme just in case, that was after watching your video on them. They were happy to send me a membership/smart card for their chargers.
    I will try and film some of it but it is a holiday and having the family with me means it's not a priority.

    I remember that ten years ago Prius owners were celebrating the fact that they had completed a similar task. Nobody really thought that a Prius was up to the job in those days. They certainly never thought that a pure electric car could get to the next town, let alone Italy. I am hoping with all my heart that I get a chance to do this in a model 3 one day. If the price is right it will become the norm.

    It's great that these sort of journeys is now possible in an electric car, if one has the right car for the job. My little Zoe would have a bit of trouble getting the same range as the Model S can as I get on avarage around 150 km or 95 miles on a single charge. I could go further but i think it's better to stay safe than sorry.
    It's most exelent for small commute like going to near friends and family or go to work with but if I would need to do these sort of journeys, I'd probably ask if I could borrow my fathers Model S. Though I really would like to try to drive and visit the Renault factory in Flins with my Zoe.

    Impressive that you had what sounds like relatively hassle free trip (despite the poor view at the top of the pass :)). One question though? How much do you think planning for super chargers affected your trip? If you had instead used a petrol or diesel hybrid where you did not have to specifically plan for charge points do you think this would have changed your overall trip plan?
    One cannot argue over zero "fuel" cost though - very nice!

    • @fullychargedshow
      @fullychargedshow  8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      +Yuki Fox This was a key part of the experience and if I'd actually shot some footage while I was away I could have explained. My fail. We did have to plan the route a bit to make sure there were chargers along the route, but to be honest it made no difference to our plans, the range is so large and the chargers so common it just wasn't an issue. We stopped with 4 friends/relatives along the way, so in a conventional vehicle we'd have taken 98% exactly the same route. We had a couple of small detours to get to chargers but we truly didn't notice. Plus we rarely charged for more than 20 minutes unless we had lunch/shopping etc.

      To be fair, you did go through some of the countries best covered by superchargers. :)
      I have always been bainging on about how the success of the electric car is tied to it's charging infrastructure.
      It's so nice to be proven right, every once in a while. :)
      Btw, Tesla has a map of their superchargers on their homepage, it's rather revealing where they are putting their efforts first.

      fullychargedshow I did notice the charge times were exceeedingly fast; literally by the time you sat down and had a nice cup of tea and a bit of a break like you would on most car journeys (well okay most journeys these days - I know I'm a little past the 24 hour marathon runs myself :3) you seemed to be ready to go again.
      Now I do remember something about supercharging all the time being not the best idea but for occasional long haul trips like this it really paid off. Would supercharging like this all the time really harm the battery as much as people think it will though now days?
      I suppose on the flip side if you are supercharging like this all the time because of the amount of time you spend on the road well you are going to be incurring maintenance on your vehicle regardless and that should be taken into consideration anyways.
      Still thanks for the info - personally I've not been able to drive for the last decade due to health issues; it makes me smile that as I'm approaching being able to drive again that the option of an electric vehicle is now becoming a very sensible choice even for someone like myself living in Australia where it can be "quite" some distance between charges.

      Warning .. Wall-of-text incoming.
      A battery's aging process is sped up if the battery gets hot, so if you (dis/re)-charge very fast, it starts to develop heat which does just that.
      However, this is based on several factors.
      The current rate, the resistance in the battery, and cooling.
      Obviously, amping up the charge rate, will produce more heat, so in that respect, a supercharger will harm the battery - but it can be somewhat mitigated by good cooling.
      And finally,the resistance in a battery goes up as it gets more full, so if you only charge up to, say, 80% or so. you don't get that high heat, because you haven't yet hit the higher levels of resistance.
      So, if it has sufficient cooling, and isn't being overcharged, and not being charged at ludicrus charging rates - A battery can actually last fairly long, even when fast charging.
      Yes, it will shorten the lifetime a bit, but not as much as many of the naysayers wants you to think.
      Also, battery technology improves by the year, just look at the changes in cellphone batteries as an example.
      I think as fast chargers become more normal, that the battery tech will focus onbatteries that are more robust under fast charging, and also able to fast charge even faster.
      Eventually, I think we will see recharge rates frmo 20 to 80% battery capacity in about 5 minutes. And the reason for that, is so that the service stations doesn't need that many chargers, and can keep the flow of cars being re-charged flowing.
      Thank you for reading my wall-of-text. :)

    • @DAGATHire
      @DAGATHire 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chendo Smit He stopped a lot by the looks of it... and indeed he expertly side stepped having to talk about it instead telling us he had lunch.
      A better solution must be found. Electric cars have this charging issue which no one wants to talk about but which is in fact a massive, impossible to ignore problem.

    • @stardel
      @stardel 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Chendo Smit WHEN DRIVING LONG DISTANCE YOU SHOULD STOP AND REST EVERY 2 TO 3 HOURS. how awesome while you're stopped and resting you can charge your car for absolutely free!!! petrol is extremely expensive in Europe ,....to take a family road trip, no Petro cost and free electric is absolutely remarkable!!!! Tesla I want in!!!!

    • @DAGATHire
      @DAGATHire 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sir Charles the economy is a great argument... but buying a car for a once a year trip while ignoring the other 48 weeks working and everyday driving necessities is a very very bad argument

    • @stardel
      @stardel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DAGATHire. What??? economic argument??? huh!!! who said anything about anyone buying a car for a once a year trip? i own an electric car and i use it daily and i'm sure most people who purchase cars do the same be it electric or ice.

    • @DAGATHire
      @DAGATHire 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sir Charles Well in point of fact you said it. IN CAPITAL LETTERS... followed by "a family road trip" as an example....
      Perhaps keep track of the point you are attempting to make when faced with a valid rebuttal.
      But so you know, I'm not against the principle of electric. and i'm not for petrol. But electric has far too many drawbacks to be the solution for the energy issues we are having now. A better solution must be found. Electric is just a stopgap and not and endgame.
      You need to get used to that idea mate. Electric cars are not a viable solution plain and simple.

    I live in Brazil and compared the cost's of running a Tesla model S (based on Robert's trip) against my Civic rolling with natural gas (not petrol).
    Based on my state's energy bill (kWh/R$) and natural gas price here I had this conclusion:
    Tesla Model S cost's 4.25 cents of USD per Km.
    Natural Gas Honda Civic cost's 5.50 cents of USD per Km. (I can drive about 13 km per cubic meter of gas).
    Today one USD cost's 3.27 brazilian real.
    Ok, dismissing the currency, we have a small economy pro Tesla Model S. If you considerer that actual brazilian interest rate is surrounding 14% a year, a eletric car will never make sense in this country.
    Another interesting point is that natural gas vehicles pollute almost nothing.

    Dream trip in my dream car. Times change don't they? A few years ago my dream car wouldn't've had an electric motor. Tesla have done everything just so right. Hats off to Mr Musk. Just can't wait for a less expensive, main stream, model. When that arrives, I'm in.

  • @FSFLIGHTproductions
    @FSFLIGHTproductions 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder if it's possible to notice an appreciable difference in engine performance at 3000m for the Tesla, when compared to a conventional large sedan due to the reduction of Oxygen at that altitude.

    • @marshgre
      @marshgre 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shouldn't make any difference as % of oxygen in the air would make no difference to an electric motor as air does not play a role in converting electric current into mechanical force. Thinner air at high altitudes may have an effect on aerodynamics however - less resistance = greater range perhaps.

    • @MrOpenGL
      @MrOpenGL 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +marshgre Cold does affect the range (batteries tend to work very poorly below -5°C) but the Tesla could work in a vacuum (assuming sufficient cooling to the motors is achieved)

      Spinning, They pickup dirt from the previous vehicle and then scratch the next car and so on. For a nice car its best to use a snow foam to loosen the dirt, high pressure spray off and then use a gentle hand wash. As I said its all about the value of your car....

      in Brussels' airport you can rent a Model S 85, if not mistaken it was (as of june) aprox. 280 € a day full insurance included, it's one of the big three, Hertz, Avis or Europcar (almost certain it is Hertz), but you will not find it in the web site, you have to phone call for availability and renting, it is most of the time taken, and in Belgium and surrounding countries charging is not a problem, full of superchargers, the daily price is a bit too much for my liking but hey it's a Tesla :-)
