Mitchum was starting a movie with Loretta Young. After he swore, she approached him with a can. "What's this for?" he asked. She said it was her swearing can. She disapproved of bad language and any time anyone on the set swore, they had to put a quarter in the can (the money going to charity). Mitchum pulled out a $5 bill and put it in the can and said, "That should cover it for today."

Mitchum never lost his cool or his humble ways. His understated acting was unbelievable. His "Cape Fear" role was one of the most menacing I've ever seen...and the movie Night of the Hunter is breathtaking. The lid was closed on Hollywood greatness when this generation of actors passed on. Never be like this again.

michael caine was curiously apt to present the award to mitch.both men had identical builds as did victor mature.the odd fact came to light when michael was making 40s private eye thriller peeper a.k.a deadfall.his suit was the one worn by mitchum in farewell my lovely.michael recalled it was still warm! they were shooting the last scenes of it on the queen mary while we were waiting to shoot scenes on the same boat for our movie!mitch took it off and i put it on! they got their moneys worth out of the suit as mitch famously complained when fitted with it as he found a label in it.it had last been worn by victor mature in 1949 in kiss of death.mitch said they are so cheap theyve got me wearing vic matures secondhand suit!

He looks like the emphysema & lung cancer had taken its toll on him here...he’s lost a lot of weight, his glasses no longer fit & by this time, as usually happens, he may have developed brain cancer, like my dad...so..that’s perhaps why they finally decided they better give him this award! High time! He looks like he’s having a lot of trouble finding his words...also like the dementia my mother had. I’m so glad they finally decided...”well, it’s about time we honor this fine actor!”
