- Before there was "Shrek" there was...."Shrek". Well, a very different kind of Shrek with a completely different tone and feel. Test footage was so awful that Jeffery Katzenberg walked out of a screening. Thankfully a very talented woman named Vicky Jenson came to the rescue and directed the version of Shrek we all love. Today we look at a portfolio book by Vicky Jenson and enjoy some very cool and rarely seen production art of Shrek and other Dreamworks classics.

Kinda sucks how her artstyle was never used in any way for the franchise, like damn. I want 2D shrek just in her style.
Yeah. They were definitely experimenting a lot after they ditched the Chris Farley era designs.
Her style is def very beautiful and creative, but I think semi realism really suits shrek better, because it is fairy tales but from the hollywood lens. I think most of the jokes really land well because of the style. + I really love seeing normal looking women, instead of stylized to oblivion big eyes + tiny nose chararcters like from pixar/disney
@@ababa9678 I can see this too. Shrek is directly contrasting with the Disney films by offering a “real” take on their films. Its art style was simply unmatched for this day. (And likely a big reason for its success. A 2D film wouldn’t have made as much money.)
The style feels way ahead of its time. Like something you see nowadays on Instagram, amazing stuff from her 🎉.
I agree! Very contemporary.
300th like
Fiona reading that mag is such a mood.
Also her feet is shown on there with nail polish on her toes.
Shrek typing away on a computer on the cover is such a great image. I wonder what websites Shrek would go on if the interment was a thing in Far Far Away…
Thanks for sharing this, it's interesting! I really like the art with Fiona in pajamas.
@@equmoria Me too! Thanks for watching. 😊
@@austin_the_brimstone Agree it's very nice
What's great about these is it's all hand painted.
Actually the storyboard artist ain't cryin'
That's sweat coming out from his hat. I believe this is an overexaggeration of how stressful the work environment is
Man, I would love to own this portfolio. The art is incredible. And I love that it seems that she tends to use gouache for the Shrek art. I can't recall seeing many industry professionals choosing such a medium, but maybe I'm wrong.
Thank you for sharing this! I just wish there was a way to get my hands on one lol
@@freakofnature6376 Thank you for the kind words! I’m kinda shocked she doesn’t have an official art or coffee table book. This is great stuff to have been buried for so long. She is truly a very talented artist that contributed to the very core of Shrek.
makes sense to use over acrylic, lot less time to wait for drying when you're smacking out a quick concept
@@austin_the_brimstonewhere did you get the book you’re scrolling through here? I tried to look it up but couldn’t find it
Gouache isn't as commonly used because it's like, the inferior version of acrylic + watercolors (while being pricier than the former)
The dumb note of Fiona reading a magazine and her doing her nails and stuff. It’s so iconic I was just in the movie though her and her doing what she do best and Shrek trying to save her. It would’ve been so funny.😂😂😂
Her art style is so fun! Makes me wanna pick up drawing again ☺️
The artist knew what he is doing when he was doing concept art and storyboards with Chel in it😏
@@BTH-camr-O LMAO they all knew. I would love to see that R-rated cut of the film…

Actually, Dreamworks had 2 Adult animated productions.
Not just "Father of the Pride", but also "My Neighbors from Hell" which is actually a 2D flash animated series.
@@RamsTheNameCom Totally blipped out on that one. An obscure show for sure!
"My Neighbors from Hell" wow I member 🤔
but damn, if you had not mentioned that series I would have forgotten it forever! 😯
Somebody once told me Shrek Lost Media was gonna roll me
Thank you for sharing! I can't believe Fern Gully was in there, that was my childhood movie and I'll always love it, but I understand why it didn't do it for you with the basic story lol. Great commentary, what a gem you have there! Can't wait to see Ms. Jenson's new movie. 😃
I just finished the video... You're so lucky to have this! There's no buyable versions online... I always loved these fantastic concept arts in gouache and rough pencil. Can't say I have a favorite, all of it is pure talent and amazing to me. I have to up my skills now!!!
Thank you! To me this was a no-brainer for the Shrek-llection because it's so unique. Also I really just wanted to share this with the world. I had no idea that there would actually be lost media inside. I just loved the raw talent on display. I'm familiar with Vicky Jenson because I've watched the commentary tracks on Shrek so many times. She is truly a gifted artist...somebody everyone should look up too!
@@austin_the_brimstone I couldn't agree more!! Followed her on her instagram too as soon as I learned her name!
Yes, I agree that Chicken Run is a classic DreamWorks movie, and honestly my favorite! It was the first one to show disability representation in a subtle way
I haven’t seen the movie and can’t find much about this online. What was the disability represented?
@@ivoryphoenix7 Rocky's broken wing and also the fact that the others were treating him different because of it, except for Ginger. They also had a racism-thing too with Fowler treating him different because he was American
Saddest part, there was zero mention of any art from Shark Tale
I was hoping! I was kinda surprised, Shark Tale was Vicky Jenson's passion project post-Shrek. The lack of any concept art seems...odd.
@@austin_the_brimstone her passion project, really?😯 (i suppose this was a book released in 2001 or 2002)
@@scoutart1508 It was her first directed film that wasn't based on a book but an original idea. Listen to the filmmaker's commentary on the DVD. You can hear her passion as she explains the work that went into creating the film.
This book comes from 2016, when she was trying to get funding for her latest film Spellbound (releases next month!) During the mid-2010s Shark Tale went through a bit of a bad streak, many early TH-cam reviewers and media pundits were trashing the film. If I had to guess that's why she excluded it. Only recently with nostalgia and 2000s kids becoming adults has Shark Tale began to see a bit of a revival and second post-mortem look.
@@austin_the_brimstone in the end, Shark Tale, despite some negative viewpoints, still became a cult following in its own right ever since its main release, and it was still nominated for best writing at the annie awards besides of an oscar for example, not to mention a creatively/manageably visual masterpiece compared to what it was supposed to happen with mr limpet remake with an uncanny jim carrey face that thankfully never happened and ST did, makes sense?
@@scoutart1508 I kinda wish that Mr. Limpet movie released. It looks SO awful and terrifying I wish I could've been subject to a screening of that horrific masterpice.
Thanks for sharing! I am a huge fan of pinup character art and those two initial Fiona pieces are really inspiring. Her work on the background and organic art really shows the range she reaches as an artist, so cool! I completely agree with you on how concept art doesn’t need to look on-model, but most importantly express the right mood and tones for the other artists to work off of.
Dang, I already thought her ogre form was attractive. Imagine if that scene was done that way.... Also, the whiplash on the next image was hilarious. Donkey looks so cute for some reason.
@@sigurdtheblue Release the R-rated Shrek cut! Do it, Jeffery Katzenberg you coward.
loved your edits, they were both helpful (for the movie scenes) and funny. you've got great humor too
Thank you! I do try! 😅I mainly make these videos for myself...I am always surprised to see how much interest there is in this type of stuff.
the voice is so cute 😭
i find it really entertaining how much you like shrek! thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I would love to buy this to support her and her career.
At least we could watch the upcoming movie.
@ considering what dreamworks did to megamind’s sequel and series, i have no interest.
I really wish Chris Farley were alive to see Shrek in it's completion. I feel like the story was deeply intertwined to fit his insecurities. If only he could've seen it, digest the message and seen how audiences fell in love with it.
I saw a random movie with Chris Farley and I was really impressed. I usually do not care about actors so he is probably the most talented actor I have seen.
Man if it comes from Vicky Jenson, expect the unexpected.
dude, you're a legend
Thank you for uploading this. I love shrek and it’s production history

So originally shrek was going to be almost rated R before made for kids
This is fantastic! Thanks for sharing! I wish it were easier to get your hands on all the hand drawn art that goes into making movies and shows, especially with so much being done in 3D. There's always TONS of incredible artwork that goes into it and making it more accessible might help people understand how much time and effort and energy goes into any animation.
It's all being swallowed up by collectors. Especially Gen Z...interest in 2000s era collecting is skyrocketing. Wanna hear something heartbreaking? The original Chris Farely maquette of the OG Shrek design sold for $400 about a decade ago. This is a huge statue, mind you, and likely the very first sculpted Shrek EVER. I bet it would fetch thousands if sold today.
Thanks for sharing this, very cool
Is there any chance you could scan these and maybe upload it to Internet Archive or something? Completely understandable if not, these are just amazing
Thank you so much for sharing this treasure trove of a portfolio with us! I was immediately hooked when I saw the concept art of Fiona chilling in bed in the thumbnail and it inspired me to doodle a bit in my sketchbook as I watched!
Also, I had no idea Vicky Jenson was involved with Ren & Stimpy OR the upcoming Skydance animated film. I’m not that happy about the fact she collaborated with John Lasseter on it (I hope his character and behavior changed after he left Disney), but hopefully Spellbound won’t be as confusing, bland, or cringy as Skydance’s previous film, Luck, was.
No problem! I was a bit surprised to see that so much of this stuff wasn't documented online. As for "Luck"...that was ROUGH so let's hope so! I wish Spellbound was getting better marketing. There's supposed to be toys but I sure haven't seen them in any stores. Skydance may be better off if they pursued theatrical films instead of the straight-to-streaming model...
I did not know that she work on shark tale, that cool she work on The road to El Dorado, Sherk and Shark tale. I’m not for sure what she think on Sherk two because Sherk two is the best one. Many people didn’t like Shark tale but me I just think it okay but I do like the Angelic and Lenndy characters being pretty sweet characters.
@@djpon7969 I don’t believe she worked on Shrek 2. Shark Tale was made during the same time as Shrek 2 and released during the same summer, so there wouldn’t have been much time to produce both. Although since Dreamworks is operated as one big studio I can’t help but wonder if she did contribute small some things to Shrek 2, albeit uncredited.
@@austin_the_brimstone That interesting.
Wonderful. A fellow shrek connoisseur
This is some cool art

From my time reaching out to former PDI employees, apparently Carl Rosendahl might have the original 1997 Shrek reel.
@@ModwalletOFFICIAL Would LOVE to see that dropped online one day…
15:25 ... Good to see nothing's changed 😂😂
5:15 - 5:30 Also, it you look at some behind-the-scenes and documentary material on Shrek, you can find footage of some computers rendering test animations and certain finalized scenes (like the bridge scene) dating back to 1999. Animation takes a long time to make, _especially_ with how ambitious the visuals of Shrek was for its time.
Loved this video so much! Also has anyone ever told you that you sound like Richard Horvitz?

Howdy, Austin! I'm relatively new on the Channel so i might ask you: Did you ever cover the Shrek themed Barbie? I think that's a pretty interesting thing that exists
@@Frankiee48 I actually owned that doll years ago! Very odd release. Going to have to re-buy that one for a video. I think it’s interesting that it isn’t Fiona but instead Barbie herself as a “fan”.
@@austin_the_brimstone "That's why everybody loves Shrek--- especially Barbie" is a sentence that lives free rent in my mind
@@Frankiee48 Absolutely Iconic.
psst i think they made the gibson character like that as a little adult joke. what other word is a rooster called by?. what does he act like?. very jokey (he's got a lighter personality in the sequel. likely due to his chance to actually gain social skills with other chickens while still being a bit *cocky* hehehehhe)
@@Daeneiracorn I haven’t seen the sequel yet I’ve heard it’s actually an improvement from the original. Definitely recasting Mel Gibson was the right call…regardless of controversy his performance in the first film was rough. 😅 Also you may be right with the “joke”. Never caught that before.
