Ah yes, falling victim to shooting in midday sun. A tale as old as time.
All the cool kids are doing it
Only SLIGHTLY less well known than 'never get in a land war in Asia!'
yeah, being iso 50 film, this stock is rather saturated:
said Jason while removing all the saturation and shadows from the scans
He discovered the secret 'Clorox' slider in Lightroom. I'd share the keyboard shortcut, but I have to see your hipster credentials first.
This is the way!
I’ve only shot Vision3 50D in Super8, but seeing your shots in bright midday light make me think this would be an ideal colour film to take bushwalking in harsh AF Australian sun.
"50D requires a lot of light, mostly because I overexpose the hell out of it"
Yeah, 50d normally looks really nice and contrasty if shot at box speed and metered correctly. You can't be afraid of shadows!
yeah those photos came out like ass lol
some were nice but I seriously want to see it box-speed metered
You should just get a single bed room so u and your buddy can save money and also cuddle
Hmm
i agreee
..,more cuddles
They was just a coupla cowboys on a brokeback trail...
I can’t believe the comments and all the likes. What rock did you all crawl out from under?
Ha ha 😂
Hours after watching this I’m still laughing about the “dressed like a foreskin”
The midday sun is actually a great source of Vitamin 50D
I recently got my scans back from the first rolls I shot since I stopped a few years ago. Some looked like absolute trash but others were better than I thought. Thanks for inspiring me to shoot film again, you goofball.
Back in the day, I only ever shot in 50 - 100 iso film. Grain was for silos and hippies. What we were really after (though we didn't know it yet) was the look of digital photography. Just ever-improving resolution, detail and creativity. Aaaahhhhhh! The idea that we could take that detail and deconstruct it into the look of film someday through AI...why, that was never even a whim.
Days without Jason's videos feel like grannydays cause they're quite boring.
You’re really A big fan😆😆😆
Love the shot you said was creepy, all the bright sunlight & saturation in these reminds me so much of Midsommar 🤩
wow that is so crazy i was just there at that Arizona 9 motel sign. i went to the grand canyon around the same time lol. i even thought to myself driving across Arizona with my nikon f5 taking pictures "i'm like grainydays." Have to get the rolls developed still but i was shooting fuji provia 100f and lomochrome purple
paused at 0:19 just because i need to say the attention to detail with this edit is already incredible. keep up the good work

to get rid of the halation layer you give it a remjob?
0:32 it was that smirk. that damn smirk.
We getting a Chris x grainydays collab?
The layers and shadow on the image at 5:53 is my fav. Well done.
Thank you lord for delivering unto us another steaming pile of love from our savior Jason
Unintentionally I took that same picture of that sign in Arizona in the intro.. didn’t turn out as well as yours but it’s fun to know it’s a small world

Must be nice to have a sponsor to be able to afford all that film. I on the other hand will go back to my poor man’s mirrorless camera because that’s all I can afford.
I believe that town you rolled into is Williams, AZ. I stayed the night there after visiting the Grand Canyon. Didn't really scratch the surface, but just to see it was something I've always wanted to do. Interestingly, that town looked so much better at night than it does here in the day.
Killer video as always Jason!! That shot at 3:49 is so good!! I’m disappointed that I only got to see Baxter once though!!!
MORE BAXTER CONTENT
Edit: I would never cross those tiny narrow cliffs in a million years
I was crapping my pants on my sofa watching the cave ledge parts as I have no head for heights, but still watched like nevertheless. Beautiful images and intrigued as how they always have a lovely pastel colour look no matter what film stock you use reminds me of Ektachrome 64 of last century!!! Thanks.
Outstanding assessment Jason. Love your work. I am getting use to the grain of the 50D. My rolls are always developed in C41. I struggle to find a lab in Sydney that can process in ECN.
If you don't want the halation, you can buy Vision3 250D and get it processed at a lab that does ECN-2. I shot 4 and a half rolls and didn't really notice any halation at all
8:26 is so so so nice!!! this film looks awesome on orange!
Thank you Jason for taking us on another awesome and educational adventure.
I do car photography, and you can get halations from shiny chrome parts or light reflections in general
I've binge watched all of your videos last week like twice. Seriously. (Yeah. I have to get a life.)
I just saw this one on my feed and said "YES!" out loud. I think I nver clicked so fast on a TH-cam video.
You're my favorite channel right now.
Another awesome video! Love the story, your narration, the video, and of course the stills. You really leveraged the film's character in that orange silhouette. You also gave a very good description of the film's unique qualities and play-by-play of your adventure.
The one point I have to make is that the colors in the stills were not anywhere near as saturated or pleasing to my eye as those of the video. The video really popped. Most of the stills were short of what I would expect from your description. There were a couple with pleasing greens and the reds at the cafe were good, but for the most part the colors could not keep up with your imaging skills. Maybe my monitor is off, or maybe I am. I found myself thinking of the Metropolis review.
Anyway, thanks for the post!
I went to the Subway canyon in Sedona in late April, Perfect time of year for the Flowers.
I dropped into my local film processer {a Chain camera store here in NorCal} and asked about ECN-2 processing on a roll of Cinestill 50D which they sell btw and I got a blank stare.
Makes me happy to see you make a video in my home turf!
Williams, Arizona was a cool little town I shot film there too. 😍
Ah yes, I can finally stop binging photo favorites for two weeks straight and can start binging this new video
The sentiment at 9:30, pure poetry. Like Walt Whitman's come again.
gotta love a sunscreen bagel
Such dope shots man! The colors look awfully beautiful, your videos make me wanna shoot film!
dude i love your channel
Beautiful editing man, really a pleasure to watch your videos.
Woke up to find this gem ready to roll (Pun) 😉 . Fortunate too cause I shot a few rolls of 50D recently and thought I had done something wrong since it looked too much like the Ektar100 I shot alongside it.
He’s back 🥺🥺
love how it says "Special thanks to BAXTER.... and the others"
I think shooting Cine 50D in night would be a nice experiment
The first thing to shoot on cinestill's daylight film is artificial light
Another fun and informative video!!
Glad to see you were somehow able to get a bit of Baxter footage in there too....just isn't quite the same if no Baxter.
;)
CC
Finally get to be an early comment and I want to say thanks for everything you give to us Jason.
Great Video
The remjet example ... brilliant. I think 50D is one of the sleeper films out there at the moment, despite the ISO being a bit limiting at times.
The ISO isn't limiting! Trust me. Photographers shoot this as if it's Portra 50, which is most certainly isn't. Cinema filmstock has insane dynamic range and is designed to be pushed/pulled/over-/under-exposed. It's also meant to be heavily edited afterwards. The cinema workflow is about getting the desired result from a malleable image by any means necessary. I've shot 50D from EI 50 all the way up to 200 before and got great results. Some even trust it at 400. Not pushed, just underexposed.
Gonna be late from work cause of this video and I like it!
Thanks! All hail film!
overexposing cinestill 50d +32 stops seems like a good idea since it has the 16 stops DyNaMiC RaNgE
I feel like my life has changed after hearing how to make a casual shart joke
This film with the remjet looks quite different. Maybe it's the presoak that remjet removal requires that makes it look different. Either way, the straight Kodak movie stock is way cheaper and better IMO. It's like Ektar but more flexible because it doesn't saturate the colors so much that heavy editing is required for portraits to look good. The lower iso is also a benefit because it allows you to open up the lens more without using an ND filter in daylight.
If you buy short ends and bulk load, it's around $2-3 a roll of 36.
You got it. And 100ft rolls can be had from normal outlets and come to about $5/roll. Process it yourself with an ECN-2 kit and it's another $5. Competitive with B&W and way cheaper than buying single rolls and sending it out for C41 processing. And I don't get the over exposure and bland, washed-out colors so many people seem to prefer. Yuk.
Jason seems u are ready for some polaroid shoots😋
killer work man!
Ayy mate! When’s the new video coming?
@@hmuz8388 Yo, this Sunday I think!
Jason your photography has really leveled up. I can see significant improvement. Love the photos at the start of the video.
Thanks jason
CineStill doesn’t remove the rem jet layer anymore. They just get the master roll without any rem jet coating from Kodak directly.
Great video - thanks for the laughs :)
omfg i lost it at the coppertone
OH sweet memories!
we love jason
I got sad when I saw the obligatory instagram yoga pose against landscape shot. I’m not mad, I just come here LITERALLY TO FORGET THAT EXISTS.
Planning on shooting polaroid as i can see
Bro I love your videos, please make more my g

Good day, peasants.
In shart. That’s it. That’s the video.
tricky film it seems. when you metered for the shadows it really blows out the brighter areas of the shot. great vid as always!
Any great video…you guys were right up the 17 from me!
i love the commentary 😂
cant believe i missed you in flagstaff:(
I see that round frame in the background 👀 we getting a Polaroid video soon?
finally a new video :D i couldnt wait
Those rock formations are quite impressive but I really want to shoot motel rooms instead 😅
Great vid mate
Hearing you say pineapple pizza made me feel things
Watching the video from my iPhone 12 mini. With these white borders photos look like I try to see them through the keyhole.
Kia ora from New Zealand! I'm hoping to come to the US for the first time later this year and I would love to do this hike, would you mind sharing the name/location? (I saw that it was close to Sedona) Wicked video! Thanks so much!
I think a polarizer would help some of the early shots.
You weren't kidding about CineStill exposure latitude. I recently did my first roll of 400D, and I took a really awesome photo of Waffle House at the crack of dawn. The shadows were pretty damn dark, but I was able to pull them to where they looked presentable. They had weird aqua tint of some sort that was kind of weird, but thankfully, desaturating as such made it look really good. Needless to say, CineStill is now me what cannabis was when I was in high school... my whole personality.
I feel like this film would be good for like cottagecore aesthetic type pictures bc of the softness of the colors
I like Cinestil 50 more and more. I'll buy one roll and will try it out. By the way which lens are you using ? Greetings from Barcelona, Spain
man hearing you reminds me why i stay away lol
I used to think you were a one-dimensional person, who only knew film.
Then I saw the Tank 7 in your trunk and realized, "Hey, he's not all that bad."
Ah tank 7, the ol three beers in one.
The M6 without a camera strap gives me anxiety.
Haha I do like to live dangerously. But worry not I have a strap for it now.
Yo we putting sunscreen on bagels now?
These shots are absolute fire! JUPITER 12 gangggg📸
And under many of those boulders lies a peaceful Mojave Green Rattlesnake.
I thought the 50d is supposed to retain more details than the portra 160, which doesn't look like it from the images you shot. Perhaps it's because of the processing?
8:55 wait a second, I didn't know coppertone made cream cheese
wtf
Wow that cliff walk was scary... Did you survive ?
Comes to AZ... doesn't hit up Dino. Incredible.
also... why are you hiking in pants in this heat! haha
I see you edward hopper 7:19
I'm spotting Polaroid films on the shelf 👀
hasselblad sitting on the table: hi :)
Is that a point-and-shoot Canon Powershot on the nightstand?
I got a similar look with Cinestill 50D - a bit too flat with shift towards cyan color look for my taste. I find Ektar 100 giving a very different much more saturated and less flat look (debit here are often blue shadows which 50D fortunately doesn't do!). I likely won't buy 50D again for the price it goes for. I get more from a simple Kodak Gold.
I've still never gotten results out of 50D that I like, both 35mm and 120. Last roll I shot was terribly green in the highlights and purple in the shadows. With some Lightroom edits it was fine I guess but I just can't get excited about shooting it again. It doesn't seem to have significantly less or smaller grain than Ektar so the low ISO doesn't do much for me.
A friend in the movie biz mentioned that cinema stocks are generally designed for more color post-processing than stills stocks since it's part of the whole production pipeline. Not sure if that's true or I just can't crack the 50D code.
I know it’s expensive as all hell but try bracketing your shots. Some of these specialty film stocks get severe color shifts from both over and under exposure
@@austing2968 yeah I shot a bunch of the last roll with EI pushed to 100 as I heard it tames some of those tones a bit, but a few shots pulled it down a stop since I was panning with a camera that had a 1/4000 max shutter. The under exposed shots were certainly a bit better in those shadow/highlight tones but still not as good as a stills stock.
@Frank Silvers no but the lab I work with usually has stellar scans
