My TopVision Jump Battery DIED - but I fixed it

  • Update: The NoCo is a much better alternative: amzn.to/4bjp9gE
One of my TopVision jump batteries finally quit working and I discovered that the wimpy circuit board CONNECTORS were the culprit. They're about the cheapest and lowest quality connectors available and TopVision should be ashamed for using them.
The fix is pretty easy. But after looking at this problem, I'm frankly surprised that more of these units don't break. After I fixed it, it's working fine.
If you unit will not turn on, I encourage you to call AND email TopVision about it. You will need your ORDER NUMBER if you call for support.

I bought one of these just in case and have had to use it four times. Saved my bacon that day. Plus you don't have to walk around the gas station and ask for a jump. I think it a good product and I hope the manu. see this video and makes a change to the connection. Just one little fix and this could be the best jump starter ever.

This actually helped me diagnose my JA300 lokithor. After watching your video I went to my device which was not displaying anything or seeming to charge.
I smacked it and the screen came right on and it showed it was fully charged and functioning.
I guess I should exchange it and hope for one that isn't damaged.

Poor connectors and internal components is a bigger and bigger problem with electronics that are purchased on Amazon because of the lack of quality controls and materials coming from companies in China. But, it's hard to find some products from reliable sources not made in China.

That's a good jump starter. I bought that jump starter because of Scotty Kilmer. He's a mechanic on TH-cam. He really liked that TopVision jump starter. That's one the best jump starters for the price. The Chinese do produce some of the cheapest electronics that I've ever seen. My computer was made in China. I had to replace the hard drive shortly after I bought the computer. I finally decided to buy one of those TopVision jump starters last week. Last month, the battery in my car went dead because of the cold weather. I called a friend to help jump start my car. I live in an apartment complex. He was barely able to find enough space so that he could park in front of my car and use the jumper cables. He couldn't park beside my car. The parking lot was full of parked cars.

I have two of them, bought based on the Amazon reviews as well. Molex connectors aren't shockproof. I have some vintage Mac Amplifiers that use them on their meter boards and after having heard a huge number of erroneous explanations about intermittent/stuck needle behaviors (both from Mac and supposed experts associated with them on the Internet) I discovered it wasn't dirt on the needle or dried up lubricant on the meter bearing, but that exact type of Molex connector. A big relief for me, I can tell you that much. What else I've learned (on many electronic repairs) is sometimes it's just, plain unsexy, "doesn't need your O-scope" OXIDATION. DeOxit D5/G5 is our (way too expensive) friend. It shouldn't handicap the outputs on a widget like this, but it can affect the innards where your Molex connectors reside. Good Fix, sharp eye! Thanks!

    Another great video bro.
That's so cool you mentioned that stretch Armstrong, I noticed that on your desk right off the bat.
Me and my brother each had one when we were little.
I sacrificed mine to curiosity, and we cut him open, and purple gel oozed out all over the place.
Fortunately we were outside so we were able to hide the evidence of the slaughter with a little dirt and leaves. Lol
    Thanks for sharing!👍✌️

Thanks. Yeah, that Stretch Armstrong has stood the test of time. He's been around for 45 years and still a popular Dude. It's amazing how far his limbs will stretch. I think we got him about 2.5 feet wide and stopped because we were scared of tearing him up. I appreciate the comments and you watching the video. Take care.

Problem is, with this one there is no way to force a boost mode for a really dead 12v battery. In other words if your 12v battery is really down, the top vision will not detect it, and not turn on, won’t supply 12v for a start.

My topvision has a different problem. When I charge it to 100% and then use it to jump a dead battery it doesn't work. Just get a click from the car. Meter shows 86%. Used it to charge my cell phone, works for a couple minutes then goes dead. My experience says stay as far away from topvision as you can.

Had one. It wouldn't charge anymore. It's under 1 yr old. Contact the company and they did send a replacement which is good. But before hand they said it's depleted and i need to use a charger that is 18w or higher. Well i used a 20w charger on it, it keeps blinking and still won't charge. After 10hrs it still won't charge. They also said you need to charge it every 2-3 months. Hmmmm. Without using it and you still have to charge it every 2-3months. I understand battery will slowly drain if not used. I have another brand, gooloo, and that jumper have been used 3,4x. Been fully charged and in the car for the past 6 months without dropping charge. No need to recharge, only to check battery level once in awhile to see. But i dont. Been 6months and last i checked, fully charged. So, I'd say look at that brand over topvision. Gooloo is the one you want.

I've tried several crazy named brands and had various problem with all of them. I no longer buy Top-vision and it looks like they are no longer sold on Amazon. I only buy Noco now. They're a solid brand and have been around for decades. I have been using NoCo jumpers on my farm equipment for 2 years and never had a problem. I think most, if not all, of the chinese brands have the cheapest electronics and batteries that it's possible for them to find. And, subsequently, they do not last. I only buy American brands now, who stand behind their products.

You definitely will not get 50 jumps from it. Like all the Chinese products, those specs are about 500% above the realistic usage. You might get 5. I use mine with farm equipment and usually recharge it after 2 or 3 uses. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

    • @MikeM100
      @MikeM100  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Sounds like you got a bad one. I would send it back. I've heard a few reports from some folks that got units that quit working after a couple of months. If you got it from Amazon, then you can request a return for it being defective *AND* contact the company and leave them feedback. I own four of these and have been very fortunate that they all are still working. The one in the video had a loose connector and has been working fine since I re-glued it in place. Your unit may have a similar wiring issue. Like many products made in China, the quality checks are not as good as what you find in brand names, and many times, the units are made from very cheap and not-very-durable materials. You are the first person to report to me that the voltage indicator on the clamps stopped working. I dropped my clamps on a mud puddle and they still worked. So it sounds like you got a defective unit. Sorry to hear that.

I have 4 of these and they are all working ok and seem to keep a charge for months. I wish I could be more help. I suspect the problem is the connector I mentioned in the other reply, because when it comes loose, it looks like the battery is depleted, but it is actually still charged.
