Witnessed a little black dog just like this at the dog park. She was being very rough - crashing in to other dogs and such, until a German Shepard with the same energy corrected her. She backed off. The Shepard went back to playing nice with the other dogs. But when she'd come back he'd stand between her and the other dogs. She was not welcome in the pack until she calmed down. When she played nice she was accepted. This took about 15 minutes. It was amazing.

At 2:35, after she's been super crazy with him, Prince gives a huge yawn and then starts sniffing the ground, which I learned somewhere is a stress release behavior done by the dog that wants to cool things down. And she stops! Literally sits and waits for him. She reminds me of a dog I wish I could rescue, that has been at the local shelter for most of her young life now, and you're right, she was returned once. I think she's basically a good dog but just doesn't know anything. (Anyway, both of my cats would LOATHE having a high-energy clueless dog in the house.)

What a spectacular example of using every trick at your disposal in order to save this dog from herself. My adopted dog has become a source of joy and the reason is because of Joel Beckman. When I brought my dog home he was very aggressive toward other dogs and over the course of the last 8 months (yes, it took that long to get him to where I wanted him to be) I did everything that Joel Beckman taught me through his videos. I'm sure he would have accomplished the end result faster than I did, but he's Joel Beckman and I'm not! Thanks for all you do for us Joel.

Joel, to me you are by far the best dog trainer on youtube. Simply for the reason that you really understand dogs and read them indiviually and not just based on what you read somewhere (many dog trainers nowadays just say a certain move means something as "science" says while in fact it can mean many different things based on the situation and dog and you just do it perfectly) and you don't just use one method but adjust depending on the dog you're dealing with. THAT to me is perfection because someone who says that "their" method is the one and only has lost as each dog needs a different approach just as you do.
I work similar to you, also have helped worse case dogs though I stoped with dog training as I'm in Germany and the mainstream positive only (trust "the" science) people are madly insane here. I can barely walk my own dogs without getting ridiculed by some crazy leftist woman (I'm female myself btw) they yell at me for torturing my dogs simply for having them walk calm and nicely at my side while passing her with her highly reactive barking mini dog. My dogs are big and would be a danger to society if I would let them do whatever. Or beware those folks seeing me using a soft leash correction or let alone a butt flip, they freak out. I love my dogs dearly, I would never harm them and want them to have the best life possible which is why I train them properly and have them behaved and calm as this ist the only way to let them enjoy life off leash with other humans, dogs or prey animals being around. I have big dogs. A female Akita and an unneutered white German Shepherd, both super social (though the GSD just turned a year and thus can be a bit too playful when meeting other dogs), trusting and I can let them walk off leash everywhere as they have great manners. Of course, bit part is positive reinforcement but this alone does not work. And it's way more fair to the dog to use a few rightly timed corrections to help him understand than to try p+ for like ten years without proper results. The p+ people just don't get that they are in fact more mentally abusive to their dogs than balanced trainers like you and I who understand the dogs and then try to actually communicate with them.
I'm thankful for you and your videos as they gave me back the trust in myself and my methods and ways with the dogs. Thanks. Keep doing what you do.

I am from Holland and i have precisely the same as you. Most dog owner do not know a thing about training your dog to be calm and to focus on you. They expect you to let your dog “play” with their dog while both dogs are on the 😊leash. They really make you feel you do not let the dog have fun and you are too strict with your dog. My dog plays with other dogs once a week, unleashed, but at the day care, not while learning to walk with me on the leash. This includes going 4x a day for poeh and pi on the leash with me. I now aleays cross the streets when seeing them coming with a dog. The only way to not have to explain why i don’t want their dog to play with mine on the leash.

Loyal dogs of Faerghus - it's so bizarre how different places expect dogs to behave. I'm in UK, but when we visited family in more remote parts of Sydney the dogs we saw were all living in the yard, unsocialised, not walked and not trained. Many seemed to think this was how a working/guard dog should be. They didn't understand why we would enjoy meeting dogs, saying hello, or have them living in the house like the "crazies" in the middle of the city do 😔

Something else i noticed is the owner's confidence is also a factor. You can see it when he tried to correct her with the GSD vs after when (in this dogs eyes) the one who means "business" corrects her. She even licks her lips and the gsd's lips.
I dont ever leave comments but i thought I would post this since no one else(from what I've seen) is talking about it. Also, as encouragement to the people out there who have a similar dog(behavior wise), make sure you're confident in your corrections and follow through. As i like to say, animals and kids are your best indicators if you're full of bs or not based on their reactions to what you do.

Thank for your insight and people training… I will implement these tools to help my small young dog “Shorkie” (1.8 yr old) interact better with much larger dogs. He has interacted with older larger dogs in his socializing that don't give him much in the way of attention, but the younger bigger dogs give off signals that make him go crazy (aggressive to I want to play) ! I like your training method so your dog is not setup to expect a treat every time you are working with them. I really like how you show the dogs character and behavior while the dog is getting disciplined to a better place and long term behavior pattern… ;) PS. I never knew what the dog bow was until you explained it here, very helpful… Thank you!

This is SOOOO helpful! I have a 2 yr old yellow lab who just looses her mind - not aggressive, her brain just goes so far into overdrive and she looses ALL impulse control. I've been using leash corrections, treats, long walks, trainers (not one suggested this), classes, you name it but when that stimulation spirol kicks in she's off the wall. Up to this point she has grown into the most well behaved house dog, and even pretty good at loose leash walking - UNTIL another dog is in too close proximity - she looses all focus and just HAS to get to that dog.
Thank you so much for this video, going to give this a try.

She reminds me of a pit-lab mix I had. Her name was Music and she was so high-energy and in the middle of training her to run by my bicycle I was fired from my job and had to give her up. The family that took her had a big backyard so she could just run and run! Not sure she’s alive now, but I’d use the stuff I see in the video if I ever had another high-energy pupper.
    Definitely kept me exercised!

Those are perhaps the SMARTEST dogs alive Belgian Malinous!!! (German pointers also extremely smart) Wow that's so cool cool. I did really consider getting one. I know as smart as they are they also require lots of extremely consistent as well as even challenging training. Because of my sons disability I decided I may not make a fit owner for the dog. Seriousky this was like a month ago.

@@timpeacock9820 What is your son's disability? Malinois like some disabilities are on a spectrum, from "over-the-top high prey drive insanity" to "lazy leave me alone I just want to sleep on the couch" and everything in between. I would recommend start looking into pure breed specific rescues to shelters, this way you can see the personality of an adult dog. Adult or young dogs can still be shaped into a sport dog that has an amazing "off switch" when in the house, as long as you work its mind and train for physical exercise.
Take your time looking and if you bring one home, let it bond with everyone living in the house for the first week. I paid $175 at a shelter for her because of her "history".

This video has helped me a lot . My 5 month puppy reacts the same exact way with other dogs on leash and even small toddlers when at the park. She is very stimulated puppy . Even as a 8 week old puppy she seemed to be very interested in everything and tried to understand what was going on around her. I would really like to see more videos on puppies behaviors and any training trips you may have . We are an active family that are always at the park with our kids . I would like to have our dog with us every time we go to the park without fearing she will freak out at other dogs .

The water part was what surprised me most: that last flop straight into the deep end and that she still hauled herself out pretty easily after the startle and disorientation. Definitely a surprise that she chose that path. Although wild, most of the time she didn't seem as utterly unhinged and mindless as a few dogs (and horses, aka big dogs) that I've seen. I wish her owner all the best and hope these techniques help her settle over time.

I have a rescue dog a lot like this. She was placed with three different homes before we adopted her. The previous owners boarded her and just left her there.
She has made big strides in the past 18 months but is still not able to be in close proximity to other dogs without being aggressive. Her obedience and walking has seen the highest improvement, but it was a long progression of trying everything. Slip leash, prong collar, e-collar training, group classes and now a gentle leader, which works great to deal with pulling. These videos have been amazing to give me things to work on. I am working on desensitization with her now at dog parks where she can be in a separate pen and meet dogs through a fence. Her on leash reactivity to other dogs has gone from a 10/10 to about a 6/10.
She really needs a good old fashioned steam rolling from Prince.

Oh crap somone already used Turner and Hootch lol. I have American Bullies and they are super laid back when adults. Even at 5 months old one of the guys I have now seriously acted like a little adult.....until We brought home another bully puppy a week ago lol now he's playing so much it's like hes 10 weeks old. Hey at least he is house broken the 8 week old is almost but is crate trained. I always wanted a doberman like it was my dream dog. I still do..Then again I love all dogs ya know. I only wished they all lived longer. Can't remember if I mentioned my dad had a caucasian Shepard when I was born and grew up with him and man he was a beast looked like a bear but so gentle. I used to ride him lol. Since I've had almost every bully breed..I'm almost an "Amateur expert" on them LOL. If I had a farm, I'd get a doberman and a caucasian Shepard like the one I had as a kid as well. What kind do you have?

Wow! What a dog. I can imagine that my pitbull lab mix would have been like this without any training but luckily I found your Channel before he was out of his puppy stage but he is still my most high-energy, High Drive, intense, dog. He would have gotten Extremely reactive but after working with him he just whines if he is feeling stimulated and continues to walk with me but he does let it out and that is acceptable. But it's just excitement...he played with a random Chihuahua at the lake a couple weeks ago. Of course I didn't allow him to meet the Chihuahua on purpose it was a situation of us off leash and I didn't even know there were other people there and so it was a bad situation but I just kept myself out of the meet since it was obviously going to happen. I kept my energy out of that situation and I let it happen naturally and it was great and they ended up coming over to talk to us and we let the dogs play. But when we are at home he is very territorial and does not accept new people into the home. He is managed of course and so he doesn't get the opportunity to do anyting because he is on a leash or put up. Realistically he's a great dog who is very quiet and eager to make me happy. he's just a naturally protective dog and we let him have that job out of the pack. Of course we don't let him hurt anybody but, we let him think that his job is to protect our household and that is what makes him happy and confident.

Hi! I’ve been looking through your videos to see how to help our dog. He is a rescue dog and was close to 5 months when we got him. He seems to like dogs, but is not fond of people he doesn’t know touching him at all, especially if one of his family members is by him. This has led to having very few people over, or he needs to be in his kennel when anyone is over. He acts like he wants to be friends, but when they reach out he barks and will nip if given the chance.
Reaching out to local dog handlers hasn’t helped much. Our dog is obedient and good on walks just not if people try approaching.

Joel has some excellent ‘when guests come over’ videos. Binge-watch his videos. You can also do a TH-cam Search of problems you want fixed. Search Beckman’s dog training..then type in the main words of the problem. All the client videos he has done for that problem will show up. You can fix any problem by doing what he shows in the video. I know because I have used these videos to train my 85 lb all-black German Shepherd with any new issue that shows up. You can do this if you are consistent, serious, being the boss with your ‘I’m not messing around, I’m the boss' attitude, which is just a matter-of-fact attitude, and I’ll do this all day. Don’t let anything you are working on slip by. You can do this! ❤
