Fire fights with Water: Spectacular explosions from Krakatoa volcano (1 Jan 2019)

- Some of the most dramatic footage yet of the explosions on collapsed Anak Krakatau, where the vent now is under water and lets water interact violently with rising magma: so-called Surtseyan activity: a type of volcanic eruption that takes place in shallow seas or lakes, names after the island of Surtsey which appeare off the southern coast of Iceland and had this activity in 1963.
In this video, very powerful explosions can be seen generating jets of ash, debris, steam and water to several hundred meters ("rooster tails") radially from the explosion point.
In addition, large surges (horizontally expanding hot clouds of steam mixed with ash) can be seen sometimes engulfing the whole island of Panjang, which is hiding the view of Anak Krakatau itself.
Be sure to watch this to the end: the explosions tend to become bigger and bigger...
The video was generously granted for display here by local resident and videographer Doni Janskulo, who lost most of his equipment during the 22 Dec 2018 tsunami that devastated Java's west coast.

It's hard to believe that a cone shaped island volcano is now near flat...that explosion must've been off the scale - I can't put words to it
It fell apart in a landslide, which caused the tsunami. The cone was a pile of loose rock and ash, and with the gas and lava constantly rushing through it - think of kicking a sandcastle until it collapses.
you are thinking of the original Krakatoa eruption that vaporized an island...those 3 islands that are in the area....all were connected by land till Krak blew its stack and vaporized the entire middle portion

The explosions are amazing but they seem to be getting more powerful and bigger. Is this a sign of bigger and better events to come. History may be repeating itself
Actually, within a few minutes, it could just be part of the up and down. During the first days, explosions were even much bigger, so big that they almost rebuilt as much land as had disappeared (at least in surface, not height)...
Well, the explosions got bigger mainly due to the magma getting in contact with water. Water is known to increase explosiveness in the magma ascending. By themselves, I don't think these explosions would be bigger than before without the water.
bouteille d'eau 1 agreed. I’m not an expert by any means but after I saw the dramatic change in the island that was my first thought. It’s absolutely amazing to see the difference in the island. My prayers go out to all those affected in the region.
@@Vaderurn6845 Imo, Krakatau should be a Decade Volcano. Due to the water (and the fact that Indonesia is always jack-full on population in a nutshell) and it's incredibly powerful past, I think it is more dangerous than Merapi.

And yes, it is really incredible to see the difference in the island. Last time an event of this type happened was at mount St. Helens in 1980.
If you're talking about the massive 1883 eruption, Krakatoa is not NEARLY large enough to create such a cataclysmic event, especially now. Keep in mind that it took over a century for Anak Krakatoa to reach the proportions it had during its latest tragic collapse. And it was only a TINY FRACTION of the size it was during the 1883 catastrophe. It will take centuries AT LEAST for it to reach those proportions again. It's still plenty dangerous, obviously. It could very well kill again tomorrow. But something on the scale of 1883 is not likely to repeat again for a very, very long time. I'm not saying it's impossible, just exceedingly unlikely.

Cool and thanks for sharing. I just wish you'd post this kind of thing either in a linear progression or just straight footage with one take of each shot. I don't know when I'm watching a repeat or new angle etc.. Basically I need a more linear understanding either through on screen captions or intuitive editing.
I imagine your purpose is to get exposure in order to sell footage to media outlets. I'm just suggesting what it would take to make this appeal more on YT and make it more easy to share. For instance, I know if I sent this to my mum I'd have to answer a dozen questions assuming she even knew about the eruption. Growing the channel will grow your exposure, but I'm not an expert here by any stretch. I just heard about the event and knew where to come to find out more. So your doing something right ;)

I believe this is a compilation of multiple eruptions since the recent massive one that caused the collapse and subsequent tsunami.
I wish I could afford to travel there and witness all this firsthand!
This is the volcano that created a shock wave that went 4 times around the globe and ruptured eardrums 40 miles away.
This is the "child" of that volcano, hence Anak Krakatoa....not the actual Krakatoa, this is a "new" volcano...

Some historical reading of this vent dating back to around 450 BC is in order. Following 1883 it took about 35 years of submarine activitiy for the edifice appeared above the surface and to build the cone which eventually collapsed in a land slide last December. It will be interesting to see how much time it will take to rebuild. Volcanic island collapses of this sort are not unusual. It's occurred in the Hawaiian group several times. A review of those occurrences will be of interest. An island in the Caribbean is being monitored for such an event as the tsunami risk for the entire Eastern seaboard is considerable.

Watched a u-tube movie based on a documentary about the previous one from 1883(?). It was devastating for those who lived near it. Do hope each time it rebuilds, it's quite a lot less devastating. Until today, didn't know it blew in 2019. 🌎
@@billrobbins5874 Actually it did manage to kill with its collapse. Nearly 300 were killed by the tsunami, it happened in the dead of night. It made the news in the western media, but the coverage was short and fleetingly mentioned the casualties, as if it was normal.

@@billrobbins5874 The volcano was under watch by scientists as it had been belching like mad in the preceding weeks. It was suspected the underwater flank might give but speculations were sketchy and not considered accurate.
@@paulmichaelfreedman8334 thank you, understandable. Like Mt St Helen's. Scientist are knowledgeable and good at their jobs. Even science isn't perfect when a sleeping volcano awakens after a (?) years slumber
