I saw this for the first time a few weeks ago. He’s terrific. In the pocket the whole time, propulsive when the song calls for it, tasteful and complementary at others.
I swear half of these views are mine! This is so awesome and the solo is mind blowing. So much different than what I`m used to in a John Mayer solo but while keeping his own flair, finesse, and that Wah! He is truly inspiring as a guitar player and songwriter.
Skipping Stones that “wah” is wah, a wah pedal, some people call it wah but I prefer you to call it wah, sometimes Eric used wah but Johnny boy used the “wah” cause he doesn’t want to piss off other wah users. You dig?

But he nor anime else is the best guitarist. Because there simply cannot be 1 guitarist who is better than every other guitarist in every unique style and sound.
Personally, I enjoy hearing different interpretations of the same song. Some are incredible, others are not. But all give us a different experience. Even the original artist will often give us variations on the same material. I think a Steve Winwood would be pleased!
How old is that Strat? It looks really old. Paint is worn off above the single coil closest to the neck and all around the body, not from abuse but from a million strokes from a pick and fore arm sliding across the body, then at about 2:30 he reaches down and turns the tone knob and then oh yeah there is that 50's fender sound commin through. Kinda sounds like he is channeling Clapton, 'cept Clapton ain't dead. Then around 4:00 he steps on a pedal and that guitar starts making a sound that must have surely made Leo Fender sit up in his grave and say ' that sounds like one of mine.' Fender Co. Can not make a guitar that sounds like that today. Clapton and JM must surely be channeling the same muse that Leo Fender heard. Props to John Mayer. Own that guitar, and keep playing like a man possessed.
Mike Mccoy They made a mini documentary about it, JM went to the fender factory, they let him play a role in every part of the build of the guitar, he says he didn't get the paint ripped off just for aesthetic purposes, he wanted the wood to breathe, but didn't want a bare guitar. You can see that there are two 'shades' of the wood that have been exposed; the darker is where they ripped off the paint, and has gotten dirty, the lighter wood is where John has continued to wear it down naturally from playing it night after night...even if it had a full paint job on when he first made it, half of the finish would have been worn down by now. Still has character and soul!
Great song and performed very well! Amateur recording where I would like to see a professional version of the concert. Hair accessory is to honor and celebrate Native Americans - hence the background of Monument Valley.
All of his albums since continuum have been influenced by blues. Just cause there isn't as many set blues solos in them doesn't mean they aren't blues influenced. Something like Olivia is a straight blues progression.
