In this video, I forage hazelnuts. September and October are the months for collecting them. Most areas in the Western hemisphere have hazelnuts trees, they are easy to find, you really don't have to buy hazelnuts from the store.
The easiest way to identify a hazelnut ree ist the appearance of the seed pods, I don't know of any lookalikes. Never pick any pods from the tree, those hazelnuts are not ripe. Instead look on the ground for the ones that already have fallen off the tree. Responsible foraging means leaving enough for wildlife, squirrels are now stashing nuts for winter.
As soon as you're home, remove the hazelnuts from the pods because they can be really wet from rain and you don't want them to grow mold. Never store your hazelnuts in a closed container. Keep them on a plate instead because now they need to dry for about six weeks. Every few days I move them a bit for air circulation.
When the six weeks are over, you can use them like store bought hazelnuts, just open them as a snack or use them for baking. Hazelnuts are nutritious, they are for exampele a source of Vitamin E ,Magnesium, Copper, Manganese and Vitamin B6. If there's a tree in your area and it's not located by a busy road with lots of pollution, go and collect some today.

Great video 🤩 I collected hazelnuts a few years ago and ground them into hazelnut flour for cake and cookies, so delicious

Dont forget to make hazelnut butter. You can also add dark chocolate to make your own nutella without all the chemicals like store bought. If you like hazelnut coffee, put a ratio of 2:1 (coffee:hazelnut) in blender to make your own coffee. Hazelnuts are very heart healthy if you have CAD (coronary artery disease). Thank you for sharing this with us ❤
