'There is no money': Javier Milei delivers Argentines painful truth in maiden speech

  • Argentina's new libertarian leader Javier Milei has declared the country is broke after "more than a 100 years of decadence" as he warns of a painful but inevitable fiscal shock to fix the severe economic crisis.
On Sunday, Milei was officially sworn in, succeeding the Peronist leader Alberto Fernandez, whose government was dogged by failures to curb rampant inflation that is now almost reaching 200 per cent.
In his maiden speech, Milei said his focus is on trimming state expenditure rather than burdening the private sector, aiming to stabilise the economy and appease investors.
"If a country is lacking in reputation, as is unfortunately the case with Argentine, business will not invest until they see a fiscal readjustment, bringing it down," he said.
"And no less important, for gradualism it is necessary that there is financing. And unfortunately I have to tell you again that there is no money."
"Therefore, following such a situation there can be no doubt that the only possible option is an adjustment, an orderly adjustment that comes down with its full weight on the state and not on the private sector."

He was speaking for the government, and he speaks truthfully. The Argentine government is bankrupt.
However there is a lot of capital in the Argentina private sector, albeit much of it is hidden where the government can't confiscate it, especially overseas. So if Argentina right-sizes their public sector and removes obstacles to private sector business, a lot of that capital flight will return, along with more direct foreign investment.

The irony is there is no money as in the current modern financial system because all currencies in Circulation are fiat meaning they re a derivative of debt and a money substitute, backed by faith in government. This is why there is a continuous creation of debt through bank loans and central banks bond purchase programs. There is no money because Gold was taken out of circulation since 1971 and the US Dollar was the reserve currency ever since. So why fiat and not gold reserve system?..well because governments cant print gold and they can't issue infinite debt in a gold based reserve system, stealing your future savings and 401k with inflation. Argentina isn't the first and certainly won't be the last shoe to drop in this circus show of a financial system, other counties days are numbered including the USA and UK/EU. I mean just look at Japan Debt:GDP ratio sitting at 250%.

he says he can't give the left an inch , but now here he is hugging Zelinsky , he talks against left but he is a puppet of the Biden admon. there is no money he says but why Zelinsky is there ? we know the only thing Zelinsky does is going places to beg for money , well he looked very happy after his visit to Argentina he only wags his tail after getting something , we know his face when he is denied what he is looking for, so if there is no money what other thing Zelinsky would ask for Argentinians , only two weapons and food , if Zelinsky is touring asking for money how he is gonna pay Argentina ? on the promise of winning a war that he already lost ? if that is the first move of Milei it looks not a clever one , he criticise during his campaign the left for selling the country to the external powers and... Oh surprise here he is doing the same .
See you can't judge a populist by his speech , specially Latinamericans leaders , they promise the sun and the moon during the campaign, they know their audience , but while the people around him know that there are lies written for him , he start to believe his own fantasy and the problem comes when the party is over and it's time to clean the house, the problem comes when they face the reality and they start to see that everything they promised and said is not that easy or is not going to work, From there is just a descent to the abyss in 4 years, that is the curse of Latin-American countries I spend half of my life living there and God that I love these people and this land , and I wish this guy to bring Argentina out of its misery , but the easy part is done now it comes the job for which we should say if he is a good leader or just a charlatan.

100% do you know the country's economy on it's last lage so by printing more you will break the last one too😅

Argentinians only take out enough money to last a week and immediately convert the rest of their paycheque to US dollars so it doesn't lose value. The next week, prices have already risen by 3%! Week after week, year after year - this is debilitating and you can see the tiredness etched in the peoples' faces. If you ask who is to blame Argentinians will overwhelmingly say the entrenched political class, which is completely corrupt. Milei is a like a breath of fresh air and he will succeed if he can manage to follow though on what he has proposed. I agree and I can add just one small message of hope. In 1990 when I graduated university, Canada was entering its worst recession since the Great Depression and I had to leave the country to find a good job. Our deficits got so bad that by 1995 the Wall Street Journal called Canada an honourary third world country if it didn't get its public finances under control and the Canadian dollar was only worth 60 cents US after being worth more than the US dollar in 1975. Luckily we got a very good Finance Minister and he slashed spending - the short term pain was BAD but after a few years the economy recovered and then the surpluses started. Canada now has a strong economy with record low unemployment and record high immigration. The cities are full of construction cranes and housing prices are very high because people have too much cash! Australia and Argentina were in the same position in the 70s, very wealthy. But this started to drive the prices of everything up and disaster beckoned.
The Australian leader took the hard step of tightening the screws on the government, welfare and so on, hurting the poor by driving interest rates up close to $20 by 1980. He was HATED and called a criminal and a monster, yet his actions worked, the economy stabilized and Australia has been in a golden age of economics for 30+ years.
The Argentine leadership did NOT act to control the mess, too scared of upsetting people to take the tough steps. The Argentine economy has sunk and sunk and sunk for decades because of this, and it may to too late to save anything now. But if this leader is brave enough to stand up to the hate he will receive he just might save them all.

If you knew the first thing Argentine history you'd know that Argentina, under a brutal military dictatorship and by quelling mass resistance, already did EXACTLY what you are talking about. And it worked out disastrously, on every front, including skyrocketing inflation and poverty, so much so that Argentina had to slow down its Friedmanite governmental f*ckfest.
Milei's entire speech is an unbelievably identical echo (it seriously feels surreal, idiocracy moment) of the talking points used in the 70's and 80's, only now a huge percentage of the population is dumb enough to go along with it enthusiastically. And the consequences, in a stunningly small amount of time, have also been the same; even though Milei immediately walked back his promises, Argentina's inflation is currently skyrocketing.

They also did not want to make a fiscal adjustment and ended up expropriating the savings of the Argentines with the corralito, later with the Dualde government a fiscal adjustment was made, therefore causing Néstor Kirchner's government to do artificially well, but only They spent money and increased the size of the state more and more and stole billions of dollars. People laughed at Milei at first. The guy is a brilliant mind, a mathematician of excellence, a Bachelor and Master in Economics, who understands economics like few others. Furthermore, he is a man who believes in God, and has a philosophical and moral basis for what he says, hence his conviction. What he says was always the same, the same, the same. Those of us who have read or heard it many years ago when no one knew it, can attest to that. Then, perhaps his effusive way of expressing himself is partly his personality, partly it may have been a strategy to get people to listen to him. Well, as General San Martin said: "One man shouting makes more noise than a hundred thousand who are silent." All the luck and you have to support him. Greetings from Argentina

Ive lived and worked in Argentina, they are cool people but very very lazy, almost everyone I met who did have a job (which was rare) was still finding ways to be paid in cash so they could keep their state benefits. Argentina also has the majority of women living with kids without fathers, so I see this dude being in power maybe 2 years tops before they overthrow him
