I just noticed something whenever Toriel mentions Asgore, his name is always displayed in red but when someone else mentions him his name is in yellow. Didn't expect her to hate him that much
I mean, knowing Toriel's nature, she was probably shocked when, after the death of their two kids, Asgore let his emotions get the better of him and flat out declare WAR. While others didn't know Asgore as well they saw this as a chance of hope. Meanwhile Toriel saw that Asgore went too far from the sweet man she used to know him as and left him. When Asgore sees that his actions have also cost him his wife, he realized he had nothing left but had to be a symbol of hope for his kind, thus still on the warpath, albeit VERY reluctantly. He couldn't even bring himself to do it himself cause when he calmed down, he realized he didn't want this. His wife didn't want this. His kids wouldn't have wanted it. But it's too late to turn back now, lest his kind loses faith.

@@nobgs4505 Maybe no one ever wanted it but when your kid dies due to a 'misunderstanding', I think his anger is pretty justified. I always felt bad for him during his boss fight in the neutral run. Whenever you hit him, he doesn't budge at all as if he's expecting you to hurt him and that he deserves all the hate and scorn that Toriel throws at him :(
Undertale seems very asian when it comes to it's culture. In Asia, writing ones name in red is desplayed as a sign of death, or wanting one to be dead. And I am pretty sure yellow means you see the individual with respect.
Not only that, she calls him _'The_ Asgore' as if he was some sort of demonic being.
Not-so fun fact: in Undertale, Undyne tells the player that during a spar, Asgore dodged all her attacks.
This means Asgore lets you stab him with a dull knife...
So in retrospect, Asgore didn't break the Mercy option so that you cannot run away... He destroyed it because he feels like he doesn't deserve your Mercy.
The idea of big, bulky Asgore dodging Undyne's bullet hell attacks is hilarious to me.

The reason why Asgore's name was always yellow was because he was so kind, that if he didn't break the "mercy" button, under the false pretense he didn't deserve your mercy, he'd be spareable right off the bat.

I always saw him destroying your Mercy button as a way of making it so you can't run away and also actually fight back so he doesn't feel as bad.
But when I got my Mom to play the game (she really enjoyed it if your wondering) she got to this point and said something along the lines of "Oh... that's awful. He thinks he doesn't deserve to be spared" And I have to thank her for coming up with a much better conclusion than I did

I think it’s more of a “it’s just not an option” and him destroying it is more symbolism. And bringing him to his knees forces a dialogue between the 2 of you which ends in him realising sparing is an option, but it’s definitely a mercy, and humiliation, which is why it’s crumbly.

While I do like the idea of "he doesn't think he deserves mercy", I think he's trying to force your hand. With both of you fighting each other, someone WILL die and the victor will get what they wanted.

Personally, I think it's either because he means you'll have no mercy, or he doesn't deserve mercy for the things he's done, and what he's doing. In fact, during a certain neutral run, after you kill Flowey in the first one, the next one, Asgore literally kills himself...

It is because after what happened with the human souls, he thinks he doesn't deserve mercy. If you killed Flowey at the end of Neutral run and fight Asgore again without becoming friends with Alphys and doing True Labs, he talks about adopting Frisk and being a family with Toriel, before dismissing it as a fantasy and kills himself to let Frisk leave the underground (before Flowey shows up and destroys it).

Fun fact: If you die to Asgore a few times, the dialogue actually changes when you try to talk to him. After dying to Asgore once, you will tell him that he killed you before. Asgore will reply by nodding sadly. After dying more times to him, Asgore will react slightly different by nodding grieveously and nodding pitifully respecively.
I'm still confused why he believes it when previous saves only give familiarity, which is an exception to flowey, the lone fact that asgore believed her means that he must've met with flowey, which flowey said in the genocide route.
Yeah that’s something I always felt like gets over looked. Like, How would Asgore realistically KNOW he’s killed you before?
The thing is, there were 6 other humans down there before you... he's killed most of them. He's probably heard some of them say it before, and given the whole timeline-shifting thing is known by Sans, and he's heavily implied to have worked with Alphys, it's not too hard to believe that Alphys has told Asgore about it.

+J Lo kind of a concept thing i think. Megalovania is more of a boss song where you are pumped up and ready to fight. Asgore is a song where you're very reluctant to fight, and the song shows that. You shouldn't be fighting and you are. There's regret on both sides. Thus, this song is better cause of it's deep meaning and Megalovania can be better because of it's empowering feel.

The reason why Toriel’s theme plays during Asgore’s theme, and Asgore’s theme doesn’t play during Toriel’s theme, is because Toriel is still apart of Asgore’s life, but Toriel wants nothing to do with him. Poor Asgore :(

I can confirm that.
Asgore, despite my love for Sans, Papyrus, Undyne, and everyone else from the Undertale cast, will always remain as my favorite character. A broken man who has lost everything dear to him and driven to do horrible things for the sake of his people. He is a hollow shell of his former self, so worn with such self loathing and depression for so many years that he believes himself to be unfit for Mercy of any kind. The man has gone through so much, all of which he does not deserve a single bit of, and has done things that are absolutely heartbreaking to think about when you consider just how gentle and kind-hearted he truly is.

What still sticks with me is how, if it's your first run and you're playing pacifist, you'll get here and _have no idea how to fight._
You might have seen the fight bar once like eight hours ago. You don't know how the timing works. You might even still be waving around a damn stick. Your physical relationship with the game suddenly aligns with your narrative relationship with Asgore, and your helplessness as a player flows back to emphasize just how utterly overwhelming and unfair this is. You're just some innocent kid, being forced to fight the King of Monsters.
You feel it mechanically. He feels it, too.
It's an incredible piece of game design, anticipating the player's experience (or lack thereof) and using it to amplify a tragedy in a totally natural and organic way. For my money, it's the best fight in the game and one of the best designed boss battles of all time.
True. I have seen a good amount of people stuggle with their decisionmaking because they expected everything being able to be solved through pacifism, but we suddenly have two fights (Asgore and Flowey) that can only be solved through using the fight button.
in pacifist you don't fight asgore or photoshop flowey

Bergentrückung is the German word for the “King in the Mountain” trope, which describes a king or hero that was rumored to have died but will return to save their people, like King Arthur. Asgore is an interesting twist on this because while he is literally a king under a mountain, he’s still doing the waiting, and he has to kill the protagonist to save his people.
So many people here have a different translation of the word
@@hollowedbrain IIRC the *literal* translation is "Mountain Rapture", but the trope it refers to is called "King in the Mountain" in English.
I am just now realizing that 2:46 is literally just the beginning of Spear of Justice, lowered down a few notes and with a slightly different timing. Raising the pitch a little and adjusting the timing lines them up perfectly. It makes sense since Asgore trained Undyne but realizing this just ruins me.

The reason Asgore destroys the mercy button at the start of the fight is not because he wants to fight a kid, it's because he feels he doesn't deserve mercy after everything he's done. :(

A couple of years ago I made a reply under a comment acknowledging that while I deliberately avoided anything Undertale related for years, I at least appreciated this song. Now, I've finally played and finished Undertale. God damn, this song is even better understanding the moment in which it plays. Love this game a lot now.

When you first approach Asgore, he looks so shocked. Undyne must have done most of the work gathering the human souls. She knows he's just a wimp with a big heart, despite his strength.
He never expected you to come through there and never wanted you to. Easiest for him was to have another nameless human to lay to rest.
Not have to talk to them, not have to learn who they are or what they want. Another poor unknown soul.
But then you come into his garden and he has to face reality. He can't keep on with his wait-and-see plan for gathering the souls anymore.
Even knowing that, he still is nothing but nice and polite. Downright friendly. He tries to comfort you. He genuinely cares about you, despite what he will have to do.
No challenge, though. No rush to action. Your coming to the barrier is an eventuality and he doesn't want you to feel unhappy about reaching the end.
You're free to go back and take care of whatever business you need to, you can come and go at any time. Only once you're ready does he accept what must be done, but it is with a heart much heavier than his spear, heavier than he can bear.
He can't even look you in the eyes as he attacks.

I...highly doubt Flowey can build coffins, nor know Protagonist's name. As for Asgore, well, he must knew the protagonis at least so much to know his name, or else, the name couldnt be on the coffin. And I think the protagonist never tells the name to anyone...so...Either Asgore already is a god-like being, knowing everything and only held back knowing whats coming, or he is good at guessing. :b

he is surprised mostly because she made it there by herself, and that he REALLY doesn't wanna kill anyone else.
This guy caught me completely off-guard. They foreshadow him throughout the entire game, implying that he's way too powerful for anyone to defeat. Then when you walk towards him after Mettaton, there's a bunch of yellow flowers. "Gee, I sure do wonder who the boss is..."
Then I saw him.
It was just a regular dude. Not a mighty beast. Not Flowey under a different name. Not a cruel ruler. Just someone who wanted to give his people hope. He wished you would never show up so he wouldn't have to fight you.
I didn't want to fight him either...
...but there was nothing to talk about.

Honestly he was everything I thought he was. A gentle leader who had the power to fight but didn't want to... just like the character in a pacifist run.

I often hear people saying this song is better than Megalovania, but in my opinion, they shouldn't even be compared in the first place.
I don't think either is better or worse, because they have completely different feels to them.
In Asgore's theme, there's a sense of uncertainty, and the feeling that nothing is as it should. Here, we have two individuals striving for peace, but their circumstances force them to fight anyway. Asgore wants to have tea and talk, but feels he must put his kingdoms freedom first. The human just wants to leave the underground, but is forced to fight for their survival.
Meanwhile, in Megalovania, while the song is very intense, there's also a noticeable sense of inevitable futility, especially during the longer sections of the track. Sans isn't trying to defeat the human, he's trying to outlast them. No matter how Sans kills them, nor how many times he succeeds, they can always come back and try again. Sans is seemingly aware of this fact, and knows it's only a matter of time before he's killed, and the world is destroyed.

Out of all the characters in this game, Asgore gets the most respect from me. Poor dude lost his own son and adopted child. His wife left him. His people aren’t free. Yet his theme tells you that he’s still full of hope, to live good days again. By not counting Undyne, this man possibly has the most determination.
Sans has very little determination. Dude's depressed. When you finally kill him, he just accepts his fate, rather than attempting to defy it.

Clover's Pacifist ending (one in which they don't kill Ceroba) is the saddest but also the best possible way to conclude the story of Undertale Yellow.
Before anyone comments a correction to this post, remember that the gender of the Under/rune MCs (Frisk, Kris, and in this case Clover) is unambiguous (and thus can have many intereptations), and not not necessarily Non-binary (that is also ignoring the fact that many non-binary people go by different or multiple pronouns). Also I do remember that flowey used the term "king" to refer to Clover, but in some cultures the title of "king" isn't gendered. I know that this comment is arguing against no one but I have strong feelings about this.

With time, I've come to admire this guy's character. My little kid mind didn't really like him as I thought he was boring and a bit cruel for killing those kids. But now I understand he was just a desperate ruler trying to save his kingdom even though it hurt his heart deeply because of the way he had to do it and also because he was still mourning over two kids of his own.

Certified bop. You're faced with a man who has lost nearly everything, and even though he forces you to fight him head-on, it's clear he doesn't want to. He's forcing himself to fight as well, convinced that what he's doing, something he knows is wrong, is necessary for the good of his people, even if he feels guilt for what he's done to the point of preventing you from letting him off easy. And it's up to you to bring him to his senses.
I saw on the subreddit recently that it'd be real cool if his name was always yellow, signifying that if not for him destroying the mercy option and preventing you from sparing him, he'd fold the instant you hit spare. He's too nice, his hesitance from your attempts to tell him to stop and refusal to fight you until you're good and ready, letting you come to him first already infers that, and that would help show that further.
I'd argue that it's the best boss in the game if not for the houseplant immediately fucking with the entire game shortly afterwards and stealing the show. Which is a shame, because Asgore himself is a stellar, climactic conclusion to the game. Even if it isn't the real ending.
When you go out of your way to figure out how to spare everyone, but Asgore breaks your mercy option.

What I love about this theme is that it tell you everything you need to know, it complements the character's story perfectly. It is not only a cool music piece its a medium to tell a story. It is a series of realisations if you put your mind into it.
The intro is a royal fanfare, is it not? It tells you who are you dealing with, but there is also this style, these prolonged notes that are typically used in comedic effects, signifying that you not dealing with someone usually overly serious, and then these notes become... sad. And then you realise - it shares very similar overall melody to Undertale, and by extension His Theme.
Similarly - the battle theme itself - it is upbeat, as battle theme should be, but it is not AS upbeat as you'd expect - compare it to Spear of Justice for example. No... It is sad, slightly dulled. And it goes into Heartache - Toriel's theme.
This is the first boss theme you hear, you are bound to remember it, right? Asgore's theme is designed to invoke this sense of familiarity.
And then you recognise Determination - the piece you hear when you die, with a voice encouraging you to push forward.
Why would Asgore push you forward? He could just let you die and collect your soul, right? And this is when it strikes you that he does not want to do any of this - that he is broken, that he does what he does from sense of duty to his fellow monsters, but he feels dead inside, hoping this will be his last battle.
This is storytelling perfectly supplemented by music.
The note at 0:27 just has such a sad sound to it. I don’t know what makes it sound so much like a sorrowful cry, but it does and it adds so much

A truly good king is a terrifying thing.
Technically it wasn't a few, it was more than he needed to. He could've stopped at the soul of the first child and went to the surface, gathered the rest from humans who were truly wicked, and then broke the barrier. Instead he tried to wait for all 7 to fall down, which was slow and lead to more innocent deaths.

I'd say he was more mentally weak than a good ruler, and that's what made him dangerous--his lack of a decisiveness. He was kind hearted, but his intentions were misguided and miscalculated.
He was scary due to ignorance, not benevolence.

Two things in particular. The soundtrack is so damn good.

Sadly to this day, no one talks about 2:07 which in my opinion, is one of the most solumn sounding and heartbreaking melodies I've ever heard. It really conveys that Asgore doesn't wanna fight you and knows for a fact that all his attempts to kill you are in vain. He understands that you are always gonna load another save and come back to finish what was inevitably started. But although all of this to him is very clear, 2:24 shows that he isn't one to give up and go down without a fight. He continues to battle because no matter what, all that concerns him is that his kingdom is in danger and that he must keep fighting for what he has placed his utmost service into. This is why I consider Asgore as absolutely one of my favorite characters and with him comes one of the best battle tracks in this game and in many other games. I know I'm kinda late to the party and no one will read this, but it makes me feel good that at least someone appreciates the master artist that is the basement king Tobey Fox.
I still remember the chills I felt coursing through my body when I first fought Ashore and heard the part of his song where Heartache comes in and I was like oh wow. Full circle. Toby really is a fantastic composer.

This is a comment I made on another video, but I made some additions and I feel it belongs here:
Asgore's theme is so beautifully complex. From using Toriel's motif and the death screen motif, to using the same backing instrument and general rhythm as the main battle theme, it establishes a sense of firm familiarity. It reminds you of everything that drove you leading up to the point of the fight. However, being in a minor key and carrying an extremely royal melody, it throws in a sense of the significant and unknown to mask it. It's hopeful, but scary. Familiar, yet unknown. Towering, like standing in front of a castle with sword in hand, but with so much desire to do what's right. The song wants the final boss to feel so familiar, while hammering in how unbelievably significant this single moment should be, similar to how Toriel felt at the very beginning as your first boss fight (and also oh-so-conveniently Asgore's ex-queen). This song flawlessly communicates the EXACT message it would like to convey. Still one of, if not my most favored song in the entire soundtrack.

Interestingly, Bergentrückung means three things: "King in the Mountain", referring to Asgore, "Mountain Rapture", referring to Asgore giving the monsters hope, or rapture could be about the ascension to Heaven in Christian belief, the analogy being Asgore leading them from the underground to the surface, rather than going to Heaven from Earth. Finally, Bergentrückung is also a story trope where the hero lays dormant until needed to save the day in some way. Asgore does nothing throughout Undertale, and essentially "wakes up" by making an appearance to kill you and give the monsters rapture.
Thus, the Bergentrückung brings Bergentrückung via Bergentrückung.

+Mathias Yea, you can only 'truely' beat it without using the fight option if you manage to get the true ending (Kill nothing, including dummy at the start, and do the side quest)
Diseen Wayne You actually can kill Asgore and Flowey though and it won't have an effect on getting the true pacifist ending. When you reload the game they are both back alive since you saved before the throne room and the true ending will go on as usual.
However, if you do kill Flowey the phonecall part before reloading will be a tiny bit different.
