Hey Dakota! This is basically the vertical version of the flip flop winch. It is a FANTASTIC way to leverage heavy stuff I have used it to move heavy logs (8' x 10" diameter) up an incline. Takes a while, but it surely does work.
Yes it does work well-enogh for they on a whem deer or getting something larger where you wat it without having abundance of loose rope about to deal with
Yes it does reduce the weight of you moving the object by what I fells seems like 45/60 % and it allows you to get bigger objects off the ground . I tend to use mine on a tripod

Is there a mechanical advantage with this? It just seems like you are pushing/pulling the entire weight.
