It is more than the idea that he pays attention to her. He is connected to her in a way that he knows or has an inkling into her thoughts. I hate to be overly sentimental, but it is as if their souls are entwined.

I think the most amazing thing about the Hot Priests character is his intuition into Fleabags little moments of speaking to the camera, he notices and it freaks her out and it’s the best thing ever
Sometimes you have a relationship that’s brief but inspiring and healing, that reminds you that you are someone who can be loved, that awakens you to the realization you should love yourself.
Realistic when the guy is actually a priest and you live in a series, you mean? …sorry, had that line used on me by a real guy and it just didn’t fit. The problem with the line itself, when said by a priest is that they (priests/monks) live love only in theory.
People in the comments asking for a new season either don’t realise the brilliance of Phoebe’s writing and her judgement to not continue or they haven’t watched enough forced sequels/remakes. Don’t ask for it, just enjoy the masterpiece the series is.
The good thing is I know that if there is another season, it will be because Phoebe thinks there’s more to learn and experience for her character, rather than because people want it. I love fleabag and I’m pretty confident it will never be ruined because Phoebe Waller-Bridge knows the value of her work and isn’t going to make another season just for money or to please her fans, which has been the ruin of so many shows (take stranger things, for example).
I have seen far too many shows go a season too long, you know when you can just tell they decided to do one more season? And you look it up and are not surprised to find out that the last season was not planned to happen, it can ruin such amazing shows.
All good points, all good points, but uh... I still want more. You guys who're satisfied can just call s2 your personal cut-off and not watch. But me, I wanna spend more time in that universe
My favorite favorite scene was when he seas Fleabag in the Church for the first time and he is flabbergasted to an extent where he keeps forgetting his lines!! That was so cute
It's the perfect extension of the concept. It makes everyone's relationship to the characters that much deeper. His ability to perceive a deeper level provides us with the same experience too. Throughout the two series, the audience is Fleabag's confidant. We get invited in as the trusted friend and hear her true reactions. But more subtely these asides serve a storytelling function in and of themselves. When Fleabag is making the asides, she is dissociating from her real world and instead addresses an idealized version (us). Why is she doing this? It could have just been a comic gimmick, but that dissociation is representing her trauma defense mechanism. It's how she copes. The dramatic tension in season one is "what happened to her best friend", and we only find out those details when Fleabag is emotionally overwhelmed. At those points, she is no longer talking to the audience because she can't separate her self from her emotional recollections, and we follow her shift in perspective to a flashback. When she regains control, we are once again addressed. It's the very medium of storytelling that provides us with detailed knowledge of the character's psychology. And because Phoebe is so completely charming, we can't help but make the empathic connection with her. So when we get to the second season and the priest suddenly notices those asides, we are shocked. He shouldn't be able to see that! He is noticing the mechanism and, more importantly, that there's something beneath it. It's palpable vulnerability, and we experience a bit of that too because we went through the first season. We know Fleabag's flaws, and now someone else does too, as if by magic. It's not that we're necessarily happy that Fleabag had found someone, it's that we get to experience some of that recognition, that feeling of 'being seen'. And it feels wonderful and surprising and slightly unsettling and might even give us some butterflies. So thankful I get to have seen this show 🙌 it's just so brilliant! 😍

Okay, so i think this is why the pain is so attractive. Because it's completive. Both of them come away much stronger and much more sure of themselves.
