Be careful, using the Bullet Bill item at an engine class too fast can lead you out of bounds, and therefore you'll end up getting sent back to the racetrack by Lakitu and having your time wasted.

I'm guessing the distance it travels each frame becomes fast enough to skip detection like you mentioned, sort of how blj works in 64
