I fish Lake of the Ozarks bluffs alot using a baitcaster, 15lb fluoro line & a MH fast rod with a jig head & stick worm (Yum Dinger). I have tested a variety of worms and I am sure the Dinger does not "stand up." But I am also certain that it's inability to stand up does not cost me bites. This is based on several years of testing a variety of shaky heads and most worms on the market. I guess my point is that the variable "standing upright" may be less important than we are inclined to believe. Keep up the great work - most informative site on TH-cam.
I was suspicious of floating worms and 6" lengths. Not anymore Jonny! You're THE MAN! I was shocked how much action that worm was getting with how little you were working it. Thanks for all the perspectives.
I fished Zoom for 20 Year's an they worked, but so many better worms out there NOW.. Like Zeebaits, GrandeBass or Zmans.. Noticed after fishing 30 years .. Floating tail worms out fish a regular worm 5-1... Good little video.. Keep up the great work...
Great video. I love the comparison between the elaztech style plastics versus the trick worm. I would be interested in seeing how these jigheads perform on different bottom compositions (Sand, silt, etc.)
My go to has always been the missile baits warlock, with a original zoom trick worm...... mind blown! I was handed a pack of the wire ones last season and never tied them on, their gonna get tested now though. Thanks for another great one bubba!
I have been using the perfection shaky heads for a couple of years and pretty much use them exclusively. I just seem to have more success with them and have a great deal of confidence in them. This video has confirmed for the most part what I thought was happening with my terminal tackle as well as worm selections. Thanks for the video.
Excellent. The video of how you worked the bait was really helpful and a great addition - especially the picture in picture showing you work the bait while being able to see the bait's movement underwater. Thanks Jonny.
I like to throw 1/8 or 1/4 oz shakey heads in summer with small ribbon tail worms or mann's auger tail worms. On deeper points or ledges but most of my bites come when i swim it close to the bottom sort of like you would a swim jig. I'll let it sink and sit for a couple seconds then drag it a short bjt then pop it up and swim it a few feeta foot or so off the botto. And let if fall on semi tight line so it swims back down. Pretty productive when fishing shallow to deeper water on points. Especially with spotted bass.
You need to try the 1/4 0z spot remover with the zoom trick worm. You will be impressed on how strait up it stands. Better than the ones you tested in my opinion!
Really like these videos of the underwater action keep them coming. Would be interested to see crawfish plastics on shaky head's and maybe the long forgotten "tube"
Great video...I’d like to see the Frenzy Nail Head shakey-head underwater. This is my personal favorite and, to me, gets way more bites than any other shakey-head jig head I’ve used.
I seem to always have a low hookup ratio. I’ll have to try out my baitcaster set up that’s similar. Normally throw it on my main spinning finesse set up. It’s frustrating because I get bit a lot when I throw it, and Ive caught some of my best fish on it. Thanks again for the tips.
seems the opposite for me. I use the Reaction Tackle Shaky head and I like the angle the hook penetrates the worm. I can't remember missing one so far.
Great video series! I suggest to switch ends of the pool in order to simulate a cast from the boat to the bank. I'd be interested in what happens as the baits get closer to the boat in deeper water too.
The wires will break off the perfection head. The way I get the softer worms such as zman to work on screw lock is simple heat the screw lock with a lighter.
Pro tip on elaztech worms with screw locks is to poke through the head with the hook. After you have done this, it will accept the screw lock no problem. 👌
Here is another tip. You can get the ElaZtech type worms to work with a screw lock type hook by heating the screw lock with a lighter. The metal gets hot and it slides right into the worm and holds fantastic.
If I'm fishing shakey heads all I use is floating baits. Craws with floating claws or worms that float. If you like floating worms try squirrel tail worms from big bite baits
Thanks for the video. It was very helpful. I fish the 4-5 inch worm on all my shaky head jigs but I guess I need to start trying the 6 inch variety. I fish in middle Tennessee where there is rock everywhere, big rocks, small rocks, rock piles, chunk rock, rock, rock, rock. I lose so many of these jigs that I shy away from the most expensive ones most of the time. I'm going to use the floating worms more although I think the fish get conditioned to a lot of the traditional worms since my main lake (J. Percy Priest Lake) is so heavily fished. Lots of good info here. I really appreciate it!
Good visual test! Thanks for showing these comparisons. I really enjoy your great informative videos. Thank you! Please keep them coming. Best wishes & God Bless
Great video, it proves what I've always wondered if a shaky head is really standing up or not with the zoom trick worm & it depends on the head itself, I've get more fish on zman worms than the trick worm because I've seen it in clear water & I know the bait stands up!👍
I use the perfection lures stand up head with Bass Pro Shop floating worm. Best head on the market. There is one down side thought that you can’t see in a pool. It doesn’t do well in grass. The little wires get tangled up in vegetation a lot. But for light isolated grass, rocks or any hard bottom you can’t beat it.
Nice video Jonny. I’ve use the perfection had before and it works well. My favorite shake your head however, is one from frenzy call the frenzy nail. They use it in California lot and it has become my go to. God bless!
I was always wondering if the floating trick worm really work. You made a believer out of me I’ll be trying that next like you said to get another look to the 🐠.
Bass pro shop's floating worms work really good, zman the big TRD and bang sticks are great and even the giant TRD worm floats. Strike king's super finesse worms are my favorite, the 7" and 4" pb&j, bama craw, easy money all great and last a while too.
Post Stalone I’ve caught both. Black blue or green pumpkin colors. I’ve had luck for largemouth around docks and on ledges off shore. The smallmouth I fish for are in a deep reservoir, and I work it down steep banks. For shallow smallies I prefer Ned rigging.
Yah, so it's all physics. If you use worm that floats like a z-man 6" it will raise up most shakey heads making them stand-up in that "shakey head" position. But with david duddley's shakey head he put those rear legs to offset the affects of the weight of the zoom trick worms dense plastic. good vids man. thanks
My go to for a small specific lake in NWA that holds hammers that I guarantee you’ve fished is a 7” roboworm on a roundball shaky head with no screw lock. Just a regular jig head. Would love to see that setup because it gets more bites for me than a trick worm.
Actually was up with insomnia last night so I was testing plastics in a glass of water last night. Today it is raining in Socal so I will continue testing plastics with weights in the rain barrels.
Can't help wondering what would happen if you used a heavier shakey head. Would it allow the longer bait to stand up better? Great idea doing these underwater videos! Keep them coming!
I like the Zman for the ElaZtech, figured it would be very beneficial for anything on the bottom. I was wondering if a floating swimbait might be detrimental to the swimbait action.
A lot of those lure and hook combos look like they'd be killer for flounder, redfish and other saltwater fish if the hooks are strong enough. Hopefully saltwater versions of the hooks will come out.
Probably very hard to do but it would be nice if you could simulate some underwater current in pool testing. I have the David Dudley shakey head and for me it does very well in weeds and such. Better than I thought it would.
Thank you for another informational video. V ery interesting. Just to confrim, you are ableto cast 50 meters end to end? My casting distance is pale in comparison. Thank you again.
Good video as usual, but explaining that the salt content is the reason the Zoom baits don’t float up from bottom. I would like to see also a test from somewhere else besides the pool, because it doesn’t really have a look of a lake bottom. Enjoyed it as usual. Keep up the good work!
Great video but before you kick zooms finesse worm to the curb try all three. They have the Original, Better than Salt, and Super Salty. You’ll be surprised at the difference and would like to see what you find. I have searched and can’t find much material on where others have talked about it. Thanks
I love this information, but i have to ask if you think the specific gravity of filtered and chlorinated pool water has the same specific gravity and density as a lake or pond???
Got to use real floating worms for shaky head. I used Grande air tails, z man or strike king floating worms, and squirrel tails from Big bite. All of them will float vertical tails up on many different shaky heads. I prefer a mustad football head.
I have to say that although this test is very interesting and revealing, there is a flaw to it. You can't replicate the lake bottom on a pool. There is nothing for the jighead to catch or get resistance from Johnny. Hence the bait will not really stand as you drag it on the bottom IMHO. great video though and I love these vids btw
Maybe take a tarp and glue replica's of the bottom to it (so you don't mess up the Olympic pool) and then we see the action in a more realistic environment. Either way keep the video's coming as we have imagination and imagination can make up for the lack of realism. This video convinced me to use short trick worms or the floating versions.
@@michaelwallace8727 definitely, all of those shaky heads probably have more action than what the vid show but it's nice to see him take the time to do the video. You can still see some perform better even with a slick bottom as the pool
I'm with him on this one as well, the video is awesome though! just like your jig one you put out. With a lake having a softer bottom it allows the weight to settle a little more than the hard pool bottom. None the less, thanks!
Yea, maybe you could put a few inches of mud and some rocks and logs in that pool! LOL. Obviously, this won't work, but maybe in some of those clear Arkansas lakes you could do some filming of baits coming through brush, rocks and etc.
The issue i see happening in the video is that the wires on the Perfection head are keeping it from correcting itself once it lands on its side, whereas the other can roll back upright.
The perfection lures stand up jig head works great until you try using it in grass or places with dead vegetation on the bottom it cakes up all around the wires on the jig head.
Granda bass makes a worm that will stand up any head. It is not made from elastic. Try those and your never buy another brand, there the secrets out. Very informative video.
maybe your not. You can move it fast, or even slow. Try it all. One day I took a tip from Tactical Bassin and just starting ripping the shaky head hard and fast through the water and the fish could not resist, caught like 6 in an hour or less.

Love that you showed the rod action at same time as bait action, puts it in perfect perspective!!!! thanks for listening to your fans!!!
That subtle message is awesome
Great video. I love the comparison between the elaztech style plastics versus the trick worm.
I would be interested in seeing how these jigheads perform on different bottom compositions (Sand, silt, etc.)

I agree with that I was lucky enough to pick out the spot remover so many that really suck on the market!
😎

Great video Jonny. Would love to see a follow up video testing the Shakey head Aaron Martens drained for Picasso Lures with the Rhino head.
Thanks for putting this excellent video together for us...its really interesting to see how the baits perform.
Great video...I’d like to see the Frenzy Nail Head shakey-head underwater. This is my personal favorite and, to me, gets way more bites than any other shakey-head jig head I’ve used.

I love the floating worms, they make any shakey head look good.
Love underwater footage comparisons. Thank you, very informative. Take care
Awesome video man. Always wondered what the really look like under water
Good visual test! Thanks for showing these comparisons. I really enjoy your great informative videos. Thank you! Please keep them coming. Best wishes & God Bless
Thanks for confirming what I suspected. This would even be a best case scenario, since most lake and river bottoms aren't flat, poured concrete.
Yeah David dudley did they same thing you're doing in the creation on that jig. I love it
Great content Jonny! Keep this serious going with other techniques and try a wider range of baits in each test!
Love what your doing, keeping it legit and not trying to sell stuff just straight up fishing 👍👍👍
Great video, it proves what I've always wondered if a shaky head is really standing up or not with the zoom trick worm & it depends on the head itself, I've get more fish on zman worms than the trick worm because I've seen it in clear water & I know the bait stands up!👍
Definite improvement on the videography from the earlier pool videos. Also enjoyed how you showed the rod/reel movements.
Try using a slit shot weight right in front of the jig head eyelet Gives it that extra white to make sure it stands up every time
Top secret lol
Weight not white opops!
I use the perfection lures stand up head with Bass Pro Shop floating worm. Best head on the market. There is one down side thought that you can’t see in a pool. It doesn’t do well in grass. Flutterspoons would be interesting to see which ones have the best actions
Very very informative! Keep them coming!
Zman SMH shakey head jig with the smh worm or Mag Fattyz worm. Floats up and looks great.
Bass pro shop's floating worms work really good, zman the big TRD and bang sticks are great and even the giant TRD worm floats. Strike king's super finesse worms are my favorite, the 7" and 4" pb&j, bama craw, easy money all great and last a while too.
The best shakey head combo I ever found is the Trokar shakey head with a Zman finesse worm z. 🤫 🤫 🤫
Smallmouth Jedi is that just for the smallies or does it work well with lmg?
Post Stalone I’ve caught both. Black blue or green pumpkin colors. I’ve had luck for largemouth around docks and on ledges off shore. The smallmouth I fish for are in a deep reservoir, and I work it down steep banks. For shallow smallies I prefer Ned rigging.

The fatty Z is killer with that David Dudley shakey head been smashing on them with that combo
I use the spot removers and they work just fine with zoom trick worms
Great videos. Maybe next one be the thunder cricket, jack hammer, Picasso shock blade?
Another awesome video Jonny !!!
Great job on the video: Now I know what jig head to buy. How well do they work on floating vs non-floating craws and other types of trailers?
My go to for a small specific lake in NWA that holds hammers that I guarantee you’ve fished is a 7” roboworm on a roundball shaky head with no screw lock. Just a regular jig head. Would love to see that setup because it gets more bites for me than a trick worm.

Have you tried the Grande Bass AirTail Wiggler?
I’d like to see the difference between the zoom original trick worm and the Zoom super salty plus trick worm

Were you using the orginal Zoom trick worm or the super salt plus variant. It makes a difference in the buoyancy.

Owner shaky type is my favorite. Robo fat worm. To me it's action looks the best.
Zoom used to make a floating worm , but apparently it did not sell well since I no longer find it listed anywhere.
The issue i see happening in the video is that the wires on the Perfection head are keeping it from correcting itself once it lands on its side, whereas the other can roll back upright.
Great stuff
That perfection stand up head gets debris on alot but its great for bed fishing and open water hard bottom areas
So are you using Garmin for your side imaging now??
You mention you list baits at the end of the video. Where?
Why was’t the zoom worms listed in Your description list. Was it because there not worth trying?
Love the undewater
3:40 is someone getting CPR in the back? LOL
Use a lighter to heat the coil, and the 3x and vmc worms will screw right on it.
The perfection lures stand up jig head works great until you try using it in grass or places with dead vegetation on the bottom it cakes up all around the wires on the jig head.
This is legit science
Can't find Perfection Dudley jigheads!
Gotta go zoom magnum shaky head worms on missle warlock , 8# test
How do you test shakeyhead worms without a roboworm?
I do think if there was sand at the bottom of the pool or mud it would have been a different result.
I wonder if you would get the same results with the stand up heads in a real lake with a bottom thats nowhere near as flat as a pool
What bearings do put in those black max reels, size and brand??
Grande bass airtails... your welcome!
Granda bass makes a worm that will stand up any head. It is not made from elastic. Try those and your never buy another brand, there the secrets out. Very informative video.
