I feel like Fromsoft was trying to make another Pursuer type boss from DS2, and nailed it perfectly with how in every instance you meet Elemer, he is still a force to be reckoned with, due to him being found only at places that could be considered early and mid-game, unlike the Pursuer where you meet him so early on that he is hard, but for some reason he isn't scaled up the next time you meet him.

The one in Caelid is also a much higher level than all the others. I think between each zone his stats get a small multiplier, but this multiplier is much higher in Caelid. I literally two shot the one that appeared in the Warmasters shack, and then the one in Caelid I only did about 15% of its HP per swing and was like "oh no"
This might not be true, but a friend of mine said that dragonbarrow was scaled to Consecrated Snowfields. I doubt it though, because there doesn't seem to really be a reason for a part of Caelid to be so highly scaled up from the rest.
I first ran into this guy at Church of Vows and got absolutely rocked by him. I then took that as a personal challenge and, once I figured out he spawned at night, kept attempting him over and over. On about the third try it finally hit me, who he reminded me of. Some of his basic movesets, and his hulking presence and entrance remind me so strongly of the Pursuer, and I love the callback to DS2.
This guy beat my ass soo hard at lower levels on the first encounter. His weapon arts are ridiculous for both long range and close quarters. This character was dope as hell. Im loving how much lore is in Elden Ring
The Bell Bearing Hunter took me by surprise the first time, and even though I was at a relatively high level at that point, I somehow still managed to beat him without dying considering the damage he does and how unprepared I was. Thanks to this vid, I am undecided who I want to get stomped by first, Elemer, or Alecto.
I encountered him for the first time at Church of Vows and thought it was somehow related to the fact that I killed maidenless guy at the start of the game (the only NPC I ever attacked).
Going through comments and it seems like a lot of people have trouble getting him to spawn so I can help with that. After you travel to a site of grave where he is supposed to be, you can sit at the grace and pass time to night. After that, you'll still see the merchant there. Get up from the grace and sit back down again, then you'll notice the merchant will be gone, and if you're playing online, you'll see the bloodstains everywhere. If you stand up, you will be able to power yourself up (via spells or incantations or the like) so long as you don't walk around. Once you're ready to fight him, move towards where the merchant used to be and he'll spawn. Source: I've hunted him down at every known location and this worked every time for me.
Or you could be me. Sit down thinking you’re safe, just to get invaded while you’re sitting in the Grace and get smacked xD, having no clue that I was on one of his spawn locations
Man I remember my first encounter with him. I had gone to the shack to buy a sentry torch. Only he wasn’t there, instead the bell bearing hunter was there. I panicked cause I thought this large man killed him and I was next.
So, building from this video; The former lord of house Marais (Muh-Ray), Maleigh, seems to have been booted out of his own castle, attempting to rally a golem to the west to maybe retake it from Elemer, until he's stopped by the Tarnished. Must've been relatively easy for Elemer to take the greatsword+shaded castle given the hereditary condition of those born under house Marais as being sickly
I dont know if anyone else mentioned this, but it's worth noting that the Exiled Soldiers that are scattered around stormveil castle also have the same barbed wire around their armor and equipment. Their armor description states that they were prisoners banished to "the penal colonies". Prisoners from Eochaid perhaps? Perhaps they share a similar if not same background as Elemer. The greatest mystery for me personally is what the "penal colonies" are exactly. Stormveil? The lands between itself? Why would the lands between be considered a prison state?
Cool theory but I disagree about the “barbed wire” is actually thorns around their armor. That is because of the curse at the bottom of Stormveil which is the projection of Godwyn’s face cursing the exile soldiers there. Though you do see exile soldiers at other areas with thorns on them but I believe that is just an oversight from fromsoft. The mottled leather shield is where I got this info from.
My biggest issue with this boss is how easy he is to miss - for some reason I was so rarely in areas where bosses like BBH, Night's Cavalry and Deathbird would spawn, at the time they would spawn that when i found him as Elemer at the Shaded Castle he just felt like another somewhat faceless boss
The only point I wanna make besides thanking for the video is that the merchants were innocent when they were rounded up, it was only after that through their despair they then summoned the flame of frenzie, it’s commonly thought shabriri who’s had his eyes plucked out for slander was responsible.
This guy made quite the impression during my first playthrough. As a greatsword wielding strength build, I pushed Arcane to wield his legendary sword and even adopted his edgelord sense of style. Being able to roll at low poise enemies to interrupt is just too fun. I did end up using the Golden Greatshield instead (cuz physical block). But after watching this video, I'm pretty sure ol' Elemer would approve.
His designs reminds me a lot of gale, the red hood, the tip-less executioner sword, fighter for the powers-that-be. But also the name bell-bearing hunter reminded me of Brador from bloodborne, who invades you in specific places within the dlc and in bloodborne you use bells to do all online related things, and not to mention he was imprisoned and while still in his cell he mockingly rings the bell. Brador's trick weapon uses the art of bloodletting -> blood spells in elden ring look like thorned vines -> like a briar.
Cool lore video, before this I generally thought Elmer was a powerful serial killer. Always nice to learn more and have the holes in your story filled so things make more sense. Thanks for this :)
He's Kirk from DS1 and 3. Only he's actually somewhat threatening now. Also his name is of significance as it's old English for noble or famous. He was possibly a noble from Eochaid. But Eochaid is described as "a land of proudly solitary ascetics" and elsewhere a "long vanished domain". So, what is a noble from a defunct land of ascetics doing in the Lands Between hunting down merchants and getting himself on the chopping block of a royal house? The Marais Executioner's Sword is said to be a treasure of house Marais. But it has the same skill as the Regalia of Eochaid. Which could mean that the Executioner's Sword was taken from Eochaid. Given that Eochaid is no more, it is probably safe to guess that Elemer was one of if not the last surviving people of Eochaid. Which means he's in Marais for revenge. Marais was probably at war with Eochaid and their victory was less than noble. As the last survivor and as a person driven by a strong sense of personal conviction, he went to Marais alone to take back what was his. He was captured and sentenced to death but managed to grab the sword and slaughter everyone with it. Now for the fun, slightly more speculative bits. Godfrey is probably the progenitor of house Marais. The Marais Mask is said to be modeled after the first of the house's line. It has white hair with braids down the sides and a short quaff on top. It is said to be the image of a young noble. So probably a young Godfrey with a slightly different hair cut. Further, the Marais Robe says "The sons of House Marais are all sickly born." Godfrey and Marika made Morgott and Mohg. Two "sickly" beings if ever there were. But what about Godwyn? Well, I am not certain that Godwyn is a child of Godfrey. The naming convention doesn't fit among other things. But that's a whole other topic. Anyway, the nobles of Marais are executioners and castellans. That is, they aren't supreme rulers. They are functionaries who are subservient to a greater authority. Relatively low on the political totem pole, so to speak. My guess is that in order to become the consort of Queen Marika, Godfrey had to do more than be a mere functionary in the royal government. Godfrey went to war with Eochaid in order to prove himself worthy of Marika. This is how Marais came to possess the Executioner's Sword. This is why Elemer is running around mercing specific vendors. He's looking for information on and trying to prepare himself for his battle with one of the greatest warriors in the world, Godfrey the First Elden Lord. So, why is Elemer staring at that picture of Malenia when we meet him in person? It could be that he knows that she fought Radahn to a stand still and so may be the strongest person in the world who could oppose him. It could be that Malenia has something he thinks he needs in order to beat Godfrey. It could also be that he has lived a life of asceticism and bloody revenge and suddenly encountered an image of a beautiful and powerful being. A woman with no ties to Godfrey so she would not seek revenge were Elemer to kill him. A woman who would be a powerful ally but more importantly a powerful consort for a noble trying to rebuild his power from scratch. The descendants of Godfrey, the nobles of Marais, were said to have fallen for Malenia. Perhaps Elemer too was equally struck by both her appearance and her prospects? Perhaps this is why he was at the Church of Vows? A place known for its association with peace making and marriage? Alas, we'll never know because we hit him in the back which 100% triggers his shield slam which makes it really easy to force him into a cycle of hitting him in the back and dodging the slam until he's dead. Rest well Elemer. You had a cool story and an even cooler design. But you're dumber than a box of rocks and a simp for a lady covered in lesions.
The item description says that Elemer imbued the sword with the ash of war of his home, so originally I doubt it was a sword from Eochaid. There is a weapon called the regalia of eochaid which has a vastly different design compared to the executioner’s sword, but the same weapon art. Also Godwyn is most definitely Godfrey and Marikas child, he follows the naming convention (GOGfrey, GOGwyn, GODrick [Although Godrick is definitely not their direct descendant]) that all of the known members of the golden lineage follow and Marika had no other consorts besides Godfrey and Radagon.
Man what's with these insane schizo theories. "Here's a young noble with white hair and braids so he must be Godfrey." Despite knowing that young Godfrey was definitely not noble given his insane bloodlust and thirst of battle. 2+2=1999 because it sounds cool to From Soft fans.
Bell bearing hunter have shield but never bother to use it, have ton of poise, have a weird but hauting looking mask, have a blade that is red dealing ton of damage and can be very mobile when he want. MESSAGE CAN BE DAD ? VISION OF GIANT.
On retrospective, and anticipating Shadow of the Erdtree, Mesmer has actually a very similar aesthetics to Elemer, so there is a posibility that the Land Elemer could actually come from is the Land of Shadows, the flipside world of the Lands Between. This can be just a silly coincidence, but the proyections Elemer has with the Lands Between, look somewhat like shadows, although this could be too much speculation.
Especially funny and cringy seeing a lot of people anglicise “Eochaid” like ee-oh-chayd. It’s probably more pronounced like yoch-ad or och-ad, with the -ch being gutteral like in the word “loch”. Someone Irish or knows Gaelic please correct me 😅
@@WhatDaFurk I've pronounced Eochaid like "Yo-kai'd" and Marais as "Muh-ray", but it doesn't help that there aren't any voice acted sources. Hopefully Eochaid has some rep in DLC since it seems to have a unique form of magic that'd be cool to exist alongside glintstone stuff.
I'm Irish and the name definitely rang a bell, I personally pronounce it Yo-hayd because a lot of Gaelic words I learned in Irish language followed that convention. An official source that states how we're meant to pronounce these names according to From or R.R Martin would be great though
I have seen speculation that the caravan was unjustly accused by Shabriri and that Shabriri was under the influence of the three fingers when he made this accusation, leading to the caravan summoning the frenzied flame. In other words the three fingers were the agents of their own summoning.
Just wanted to mention that the item description of the antspur rapier might provide some more insight in the relationship between marais and scarlet rot
Got slaughtered by him in Caelid and Tortoise Church, so was petrified any time I went back there, what time of day might it turn out to be. Used an Ash at Shaded Castle like a wuss. Yes, him and the Death Bird were the Pursuer. Was so pleased at the amount of DS2 in DS4.
Elemer reminds me of Creighton the Wanderer from DS2 and 3. He wears mostly chainmail, is a good fighter and a mass murderer, his masked helmet has some similarities to Creighton's masked helmet, the blue cape, huge weapon, is an invader. I really think Elemer was inspired by creighton when they made him, I can't shake off the vague similarities...
Same! There's something really unsettling about a _knight_ specifically, just wandering around killing people for money or their own sadistic gratification. It's unexpected behavior coming from a noble warrior, and the idea of a highly trained sociopath in _full plate armor_ is simply horrific. I guess there were robber-knights and things like that in real world history, though; specifically around the Rhineland, since the highly bureaucratized toll system at the time made it easy for them to disguise their robberies as a legitimate fee for passage across the river.
If you rest to try spawn the BBH, you need to basically sit Until Nightfall, unrest/stand, then sit again. If you can see the Merchant from the resting spot, you’ll notice it vanish when done right.
That was our assumption at first, but there is canonically only 1 Marias executioner sword and as far as we know Elemer is the only person to use the briar set. "The Bell Bearing Hunter" is also a title only he holds.
@@enterusername6953 I think this is the right answer. It plays into the multiple worlds theories currently being discussed in the Elden Ring community.
The bell bearing hunter isn't the only one that murders merchants, I do it for convenience. I like having all of the merchant's inventories in one place, screw forgetting where something is you want to buy, and having to bounce between a ton of them to find it.
Thank you so much! We're still pretty new and the algorithm gives us a little push whenever we post a new video, but it tends to lose us in the noise after that.
My first encounter with the Bell Bearing Hunter was at the Isolated Merchant Shack, and I was a low level warrior class because I wanted to get the samurai armor as soon as I could when I learned where it was. I showed up at night, and fought against the guy doing minimal damage, and when his sword was floating behind me, he recalled it and I died instantly because I didn't notice it.
bru *sees this in my reccomendations on my first page* - sunday morning, fresh hot coffee right infront of me, breakfast ready very soon clicks instantly: in Count Dooku voice: "Hoo I ve been looking forward to this!" checks release date: 10 MONTHS AGO!!! I ve been sure i ve watched EVERY single video from this channel and somehow this keeps happening!!!!
The only part of this that I'm inclined to disagree with is your interpretation of the merchants' motivation to summon the Frenzied Flame. They didn't do it out of hate or thirst for revenge, they did it out of despair. The whole point of the Frenzied Flame is believing that the world is a terrible, irredeemable place and that the only way to fix it, and end the suffering, is to tear it all down. The merchants wanted their suffering to end, and so they summoned the flame.
Appreciate it! I just don't like padding out my vids. I could probably stretch a topic to be longer, but why do that when I can get you the lore more succinctly?
@@square-table-gaming Ya true. Main reason a longer video would be appealing is that I like falling asleep to lore videos so I can have some crazy lucid dreams. But I can just have ur videos on auto play.
One of the toughest mini bosses in the game. The encounter in Caelid is particularly vexing since it seems like he has way more health here than in any other encounter including the one in Marais Castle. It took me a bunch of scarlet rot AND bleed build up to finally take him out. Top tier stuff
Shaded castle was always an interesting place to me, I hope they add more of a story in the shadows of the erdtree about this, or different side stories
Maaaan, this guy gave more trouble than ANY other boss in this game, Malenia or Elden Beast were not even close to this guy. I died som many times I needed to change my build just to beat him
I my opinion, he just hunts them for sport. Also, if we assume that bell bearings can be used by other people to buy the wares of the deceased - just like we can at the Twin Maiden Husks - then it's possible he hunted them for that very purpose. In a way, killing the merchants is the most time efficient way for the player to not miss their items, since you can have all of them stored at a single place. So it's possible Elemer is a reflection of those very players, both ruthless apathetic killers who murdered countless vendors just for the sake of their own benefit. And the presence of the Hunter at the Church of Vows could indeed imply that he seeked absolution for his crimes, just like a player who killed the merchants might one day. And if Miriel (the pope dog) didn't drop a bell bearing I would 100% believe that, but most likely he was just there to kill Mirel. Who knows, perhaps the intention was that the player might infer their own conclusion. Did Elemer regret his actions at the end, or did he remain an ascetic who cared only about honing his skills?
Awesome to see a video talking about something which hasn’t been explored much in TH-cam lore videos! Such a cool looking character too. Great video. By the way, just a little nitpick, the “s” in “Marais” is silent so it’s pronounced “ma-RAY”
@@square-table-gaming it’s not explicitly stated in game, but I live an hour from the town of Grand Marais, Minnesota, and that’s how it’s pronounced there. The French also pronounce it with no “s”.
I personally presumed that Eochaid was somewhere outside the Lands Between; similar to the Badlands or Land of Reeds, and that he was just a serial killer who took bell bearings as trophies.
Hey there; just some pronunciation gripes. (Mispronunciations drive me insane.) The name of the House of Marais is francophonic, and thus is correctly pronounced 'ma-RAY', not 'marry-us'. Eochaid is celtiphonic, or Irish-sounding, so its correct pronunciation is 'O-hahd', not 'ecko-aid'.
4:47 wow, with that kind of damage output I’m surprised you even have the stats to wield the weapon And to add to the story, the ghost probably refers to Maleigh when he refers to the head of House Marais, the castle’s castellan. He can be found outside, standing alone in a field near a halberd golem. This fits the description of the ghost because his set and the valkyrie prosthesis describes Maleigh as being obsessed with Malenia. To which I personally had the immediate visceral reaction to kill him in cold blood on every save I have. Noone infatuated with that freak is fit to be a leader.
I do think the reason Elemer can be found at the Church of Vows is because, at some point, he did start to feel regret and guilt over slaughtering so many merchants and instructors and was seeking some kind of repentance. However, because he's already so deep into such a bloody, murderous rampage, he's pretty much lost himself to the Bell-Bearing Hunter, which has completely consumed him and whatever humanity he had. Perhaps if he stumbled onto the Turtle Pope earlier and listened to his wisdom, he might've been able to come back, but as we find him, the only thing that can be done is to put him down, since he's nothing but a cold-blooded killing machine. Him appearing more or less turns Elden Ring into a slasher movie, with him being the ruthless, unstoppable antagonist.
Idk if anyone agrees but to me elemer reminded me a lot of tsorig from ds3. He was a looming hulking guy who lore wise was an absolute savage you did not want coming after you. The souls games do a good job of putting these like almost side villains in the game who command a fair amount of respect.
wow, i always thought he was a form of all the merchants i slaughtered, chasing me to the ends of the earth, following me to hell itself to exact its vengeance.
Maybe Elmer is at the church of vows to steal bell-bearings from others that have killed merchants but seek forgiveness, thus taking their bell-bearings by killing them.
What armor are you wearing while fighting the hunter at about 6:57? The red hood looks really cool with whatever that armor is, and I’ve been looking for some cool fashion to pair with the red and blue hoods.
@@square-table-gaming awesome! Thank you! When you alter armor, can you alter it back? I’d like to try that setup but I don’t wanna lose that dope cape he’s got forever
What actually are bell bearings in the lore? They seem very "gamey" in their implimentation. Maybe they just allow you to transfer runes between people without having to kill them, but idk.
I nearly had a heart attack when i came to the church of vows, saw Turtle Pope missing and was invaded by this dude. Thankfully i was like level 125 and beat his ass up
My unresearched guess was that maybe Elemer was looking for a specific merchant, like the terminator. Can't think of why that would be though. I do wonder why Patches ends up outside Elemer's doorstep, and left alive
Also, love the lore videos and your style of it as well. These videos are what I look for so keep it up! I leave these on while I play so make as many as possible about anything you want in Elden ring and you got views. Keep up the hard work, it's appreciated so much dude !

One interesting thing is that there's a spirit you can talk to in the Shaded Castle, who says that he took the sword, and betrayed family Marais "all in the name of that harpy" He seems to be referring to Malenia who has multiple wing motifs, beyond her Scarlet Goddess form, there's also her winged helmet. Her cleanrot knights patrol his castle, and the room he's standing in has large portrait of Malenia as well. It's also noteworthy that of all the souls Miquella and Malenia accepted at the Haligtree, the Misbegotten, Omen, Pests, Crystallians, Albinaurics, and even Those Who Live in Death, (in Castle Sol, where you get half the Haligtree medallion, apparently Miquella had a plan to eclipse the sun, and return Godwyn's soul) he doesn't accept those who are affected by the Flame of Frenzy, and his golden needle, while only helpful at delaying the rot, totally removes the Flame of Frenzy's influence. Very interesting. Edit : Also in Gaol tunnel, a prison, we find the Regalia of Eochard, with a bunch of Vulgar Militia members, and burning corpses locked in their cells, which imo is a sign that the prison was owned by Radahn's troops. Past the boss, is the Regalia of Eochard, the only other weapon with the dancing blade skill. Marais's executioner sword's telekinesis control abilities are unique to Elemer of the Briar, and an Eochard, as stated, his homeland's ability.

Will he spawn if you best his real form?

Literally couldn't find a single comment of someone not being able to find him lmao
Maybe they wouldn't be so sickly if they didn't live on top of a pool of roiling, fuming poison sludge. Lol
My biggest issue with this boss is how easy he is to miss - for some reason I was so rarely in areas where bosses like BBH, Night's Cavalry and Deathbird would spawn, at the time they would spawn that when i found him as Elemer at the Shaded Castle he just felt like another somewhat faceless boss
taking your executioners blade and using it is such a flex.
The only point I wanna make besides thanking for the video is that the merchants were innocent when they were rounded up, it was only after that through their despair they then summoned the flame of frenzie, it’s commonly thought shabriri who’s had his eyes plucked out for slander was responsible.

My first thought when I first saw him at Warmaster's Shack...
"Ohmygod, you Darth Vader-aack!!"
Great video. Thanks for adding to the experience of the boss. Makes it that much more fun.
I’ve never been so glad to read a long commment lol well done
This is so gorgeous. Was this all what
You obtained or did you find this somewhere? This is amazing.

Two small corrections:
House Marius -> House Marais (maree)
Echoaid -> Eochaid
Especially funny and cringy seeing a lot of people anglicise “Eochaid” like ee-oh-chayd.
It’s probably more pronounced like yoch-ad or och-ad, with the -ch being gutteral like in the word “loch”.

Great video! Really like the lore on lesser characters and areas. Keep it up!
I don't know what Elemer was thinking trying to hunt Bernahl... the man would wipe the floor with him.

His set reminds me a lot of the protagonist of Blasphemous
@@hektikbonezzz4467 TRUE! That too
I was under the impression that there are multiple bearing hunters who were led by Elemer, not that they're all Elemer.
That was our assumption at first, but there is canonically only 1 Marias executioner sword and as far as we know Elemer is the only person to use the briar set. "The Bell Bearing Hunter" is also a title only he holds.

One of the toughest mini bosses in the game. The encounter in Caelid is particularly vexing since it seems like he has way more health here than in any other encounter including the one in Marais Castle. It took me a bunch of scarlet rot AND bleed build up to finally take him out. Top tier stuff
It makes sense that the Marias bloodline is now delegated outside of their own castle, and off to the side while elemer sits in the castellan house.
i didnt know that stuff about the merchents i was wondering why they were afraid of the tarnished when you first meet them
Shaded castle was always an interesting place to me, I hope they add more of a story in the shadows of the erdtree about this, or different side stories
Caelid Elemer was the worst. All others got one-shot, but the Caelid one one-shot me for hours.
He is weak to riposte. I litereally killed him with no damage, believe it or not. At close range he can't use his floating lightsaber.
Maaaan, this guy gave more trouble than ANY other boss in this game, Malenia or Elden Beast were not even close to this guy. I died som many times I needed to change my build just to beat him
You can cheese him by just standing on the shack and hitting him with ranged attacks but it feels so shameful even though he does one shot you
Considering the location of the Shaded Castle it's kinda funny to me that the name "Marais" is literally "Swamp" in French.
Love your channel. Thanks for sharing these videos. 😀

Night bernahl drops a vell bearing js. The turtle probably does too cause you can buy from him
I’m always a fan of anybody who brings merchants to justice. Long live the bell bearing hunter.
I respect him even more now. One of my hardest foes!

I noticed when using the armor set, that it is almost like a larger, more intricate version of the exile armor. I thought that was pretty interesting
Ran into this dude in north Caelid on journey 3.

Killed me 4 times.
Yup yup! We've gotten comments on both and will not be mispronouncing these again.
Great lore video dude very cool
He is that one guy who kills all the merchants
4:47 wow, with that kind of damage output I’m surprised you even have the stats to wield the weapon
And to add to the story, the ghost probably refers to Maleigh when he refers to the head of House Marais, the castle’s castellan.
Just popped a larval tear so I had the bear minimum stars to weild it. I typically run str/int
I like the concept of some version of Elemer feeling regret for his actions, but he probably wouldn't attack us if he was there for absolution.
I think he wanted to turtle pope because of his view on hearsay and nothing else
Huh, definitely explains why some merchants (or only the one that I know of) can cast frenzied spells
Maybe Elmer is at the church of vows to steal bell-bearings from others that have killed merchants but seek forgiveness, thus taking their bell-bearings by killing them.
I believe eochaid is in the shadow of the erdtree dlc she hid it making it vanish
Same here I just started a build based around the eochaid weapons because I have a strong feeling we'll learn a lot more about them in the dlc

One interesting thing is that there's a spirit you can talk to in the Shaded Castle, who says that he took the sword, and betrayed family Marais "all in the name of that harpy"
He seems to be referring to Malenia who has multiple wing motifs, beyond her Scarlet Goddess form, there's also her winged helmet.
