This is a classic! Listening again after several months Dr John shows how right he is about these people. One thing rang extra clear when he said in a way these people are trying to recapture their youth-- then I recall reading last week Zulema and Lori going back and forth about aging less and getting their period (biggest eye roll ever) I think I'm going to have to binge these podcasts again. It's amazing to see how all this has unravelled and Dr. John & Lauren are spot on! You guys rock.
After this amount of time we have the framework of this case from the news. listening to these podcasts where Lauren asks the best questions ever, so astute, Dr John thinks deeply and carefully and his answers glue the pieces of information together to make the puzzle show the real picture.
You should definitely watch the interview that Lauren has with Megan (Lori's cousin), and this woman is only ONE YEAR younger than Lori, and she looks more than a decade younger than Lori. It's absolutely shocking. I must say that inner beauty DOES shine through. In my eyes, it always has, at least. That must be a large part of it, too!
This is my second round listening through the Daybell analysis, not only has it helped me better understand these tragic crimes but it’s given me so much more insight into my own family system and fears around mortality. Thank you!! I feel honoured to have a metaphorical seat at your table.
I have came back to revisit this episode. What John said about the family and life he has as being enough for him struck me differently this time. The world we create for happiness with ourselves and our children should better than enough and is more than enough for me! When John said he wished it would have been enough for Chad Daybell, I cried. I Sincerely wish it could have been enough. That was beautiful Doc.
OMG listening to John talking about what a huge blessing his son is to him. It brought tears to my eyes. I can perceive without a doubt that you JOHN are such a wonderful and effective dad. You are so precious and ur son is so blessed to have you.
I love you both!!!! I just found this after watching your youtube videos all the time....following you Lauren at Chad Daybells trial and i am going to binge this thank you!!!

I saw life through different eyes. There is so much beauty, love kindness talent etc. around us. I decided to live on the sunny side of the street, no longer focusing on negativity. Hopefully you will regain your good health eventually and enjoy life even more. Every good wish from Ireland. 🇮🇪
I'm a year late but I love the fact Dr John, as a psychologist, saw the real value in studying literature also! It really is a window into the psyche of not only the author but also the times they lived in. I feel literature is also a mirror where our interpretations and reactions can tell us a great deal about ourselves. I love learning about how the mind works and how it behaves when it goes off the rails, so to speak. My literature classes and my anatomy classes were my favorite in college! I like it when art meets science. So elegant.
So cool! A rare moment to go back and listen to the beginning!! Thank you for so much for all you do. I'm so glad you met and created this amazing life together and Thank you for sharing it!!! ❤

But listening to Dr. John compare and contrast his Beautiful Experience with his Son and Chad Looking Somewhere that doesn't Exist to feel Special really resonates with me. Thank you so much, you 2 are Amazing 👏 ❤ 💯
The podcasts you guys put out are really high quality. The one thing that I think is coming out more and more is that human beings have in our nature chameleon-like, deceptive components that are all about sheer survival, just like all other life forms whose prime motivation in all things is to survive. We think we're so evolved, so sophisticated, but in truth we're still a species that to a large degree will kill or annihilate others in order to secure our own position in the society we think we need in order to survive. This is a reality that many just can't deal with but many of us know we have to rise above this, see each other as equals, help each other and survive together.
Oh my goodness…I am just now diving in to this case and found this treasure trove of info. Let me go on ahead and get some coffee, buckle my seatbelt and settle in…

I appreciate the casual invitation to dinner with the Mathias’ like we belong there and the topic of conversation is very interesting and informative and intriguing...like being on a murder mystery dinner boat cruise with your friends, the comfortablness (?) and how the investigative journalist of Mrs. Lauren and the knowledge of human psych of Dr. John makes me feel so at home(?) like I belong, and makes me wonder why I didn’t take those psychology courses a little more seriously and why I didn’t persue that direction (especially when I have family members whom I name for every Psych vocabulary word) I look forward to hearing from you each podcast! I think Chad Daybell took a deep dive, but I also think his insecurities from childhood into his adult life created delusions of grandure. I also don’t think he believes everything he says, but he knows it brings him attention. Any Prophet that is a false prophet knows what he preaches isn’t true. If a prophet cannot draw straight parallels to what scripture is supposed to mean and they draw people away from Christ instead of to him then he knows what he is doing is wrong. I completely believe he knew right from wrong here.
This was sooo interesting and insightful! Just way too short! I really appreciate your helping us to better understand human behavior v. inhuman behavior on the part of Chad Daybell/Lori Vallow. 💕

I think it's important to add that even the leaders (prophets and apostles) of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints that he claimed to follow, (which he clearly never understood) even those prophets are humble enough to know and understand that they are not special beyond any other human being on this Earth, but they are simply chosen to be a mouthpiece for the Lord Jesus Christ and not chosen to state their own thoughts and words, ideas and desires. Just discovered these. I’ve followed your TH-cam videos on the trial and am now fascinated by your deep dives on the psychology of the Chad Daybell craziness. Trying to relieve my daily addiction of following this unbelievable case. Thanks for your stellar work!
This is fascinating... I love listening to Dr. John's assessment of the psychological makeup that is Chad Daybell. Humans are so complex and so many things that happen to us all our lives come together to shape us into the creatures we become and how we perceive the world and others. When an analysis is made of someone and aspects are broken down, it becomes much clearer to the layperson as to what might make a person tick in a certain way. Thank you so much, Dr. John, for your patience and in-depth explanations of the important 'players' or involved parties in this case. It's all important for us to really understand these people to follow along and to try and make some sense of the murders of innocent children and adults. You and Lauren are the consummate team!
I was working on getting my bachelor's in psychology && 6 months from getting my degree I got kicked out for attendance issues; however, it is still something I still enjoy learning about. The way Lauren tells the story && Dr. John analyzing the situation and the people in it. You guys are great! I've been addicted to this case since Lori's trial started.
I so enjoy your insight into the true human being. Not just the crime but what brings people in general to make their choices and the sometimes horrible results of the person being unable to improve their way of thinking.
I’m so glad you guys are posting these on TH-cam now. I started listening to this podcast on Spotify awhile back and I lost my place. Now I can I listen to them again and catch up.
This is just as insightful and informative now as it was the first time I heard it. It is absolutely amazing what someone with an interest and a education can teach new things to a old woman like me. I just love it when I learn something . It makes me happy. Thank you again.
Dr. John and Lauren, thank you for providing your insights and expertise on this case. It has affected me and puzzled me greatly. I just want to understand why. In fact I was listening again to your previous podcasts last night. I could listen and learn from you endlessly. Praying for you both! 💜🙏🏼🙌🏽
Finding you all after the Netflix doc. I went back and watched your interviews on Mormon Stories after episode one. I found them pretty essential to understanding the case. Now I am going through the podcast as well :)
Just now tuned into the podcast; already a fan of the YT channel and I’m impressed with this. I didn’t expect such a lyrical quality 😊I love the insights from myth and fiction. Going to binge the Daybell playlist
I feel like Dateline is giving this case attention for the ratings only. So much of their content is for sensationalism only. Those of us that have followed this case from the beginning know there is so much more digging to do to uncover hidden motives. Thank you Lauren and Dr John for bringing us so much more than Dateline could ever do!
If Chad wanted to “be somebody” in the church, he should have shown he could handle responsibility by… idk, HELPING SUPPORT HIS FAMILY. Crazy idea, right?
This is a very philosophical view of Chad Daybell, I cried when you contemplanted answering the question to your son. Thank you for these food for thought.
I got sucked into this story when I listened to Afterglow. The problem is I listened to all of it but it stopped at finding the bodies of the children. I don’t know what happened. So I had to dig through current news reports. But then I just found your podcast. It fills in so many gaps I was looking for. Keep up the great work. The Lori and Chad saga is full of too many rabbit holes. But I wanna go down each. Your podcast has taken me there to answer my questions.
Even though Chad smiles, there’s something so flat and empty about his expressions and the way he talks. His daughter Emma strikes me as being that way as well.
Well I have to admit I agree with Lauren I’m so glad these dinner time discussions have got longer Although I appreciate How much time energy and preparation they take Dr Jhon‘s perspective on things has taught me so much So has Lauren’s willingness to be open and state her needs That is so cool
I truly enjoy listening to you two. John, you are such an unpretentious person with such an exceedingly brilliant academic mind. I love how all your podcasts and live shows are just so rich with philosophy, psychology, and literature as if it were a wonderful university lecture every time, but so conversational and relatable at the same time. Lauren you are just so charming and intelligent and witty, the two of you are a mental match made in heaven. You’re very beautiful too, and really the most adorable wife ever. I feel like all wives should be like Lauren Matthias; you just exude a natural interest and devotion to your husband, and you have a very easygoing non judgmental energy that makes you seem like a great person to live with. I’ve really gotten into this channel lately since the airing of Sins of Our Mother.
Chad Daybell court hearing should be very soon. So listening again. Justice for the innocent children. It is interesting to get a psychological impression of ...why ? . Thankyou for making these deep dive podcasts.
What a great first episode! I was raised in the LDS church by parents that never appreciated or ‘saw’ what they had- didn’t really value or be present with their children. There was actually one of their children died shortly after birth and this is their ‘prize, perfect child’! As a child and adult I was envious of the love and attention that this child got from my mother. Of course I understood they did not even KNOW this kid and had this child been lived they would have been in trouble and had their butt smacked too, like the rest of us. It was a fantasy perfect child for their fantasy perfect afterlife in the celestial Kingdom.
The desire to feel special. It was the primary mover. We all want to feel loved, valued, unique in some way. Chad let that desire warp him as many do. What he never cultivated was humility or true appreciation for those around him. His desire to be super human and his disconnection from others and from the simple beauty of life led him from one extreme to another. We can all learn from this.
I see that Chad's persuing to feel special began early in childhood. His multiple "near death experiences" was his claim to being "immortal". That he was above death and people praised him for surviving. It all fed his ego. And working as a sexton, he could always be over those mere mortals he was putting in the ground ... Tammy, Charles, Tylee and JJ as well. And by his smug attitude in all the legal and court proceedings Chad still thinks he is untouchable.
Great point Dr John, it's never enough with these people, always pushing the boundaries, wouldn't see or appreciate what's in front of them...This was very interesting., thankyou both...Regards from Ireland 🇮🇪 💚
Listening to you talk about your own son as a child, and the kinds of thoughts this Daybell situation prompted in you, reminded me of my own son when he was very young. He lost his great grandmother at age 3, and I sat him down on a warm sunny day under a tree, and explained death to him. About 1 -2 years later, (he was still in preK at St. Mary's Prep, our next door neighbors, with whom we were all quite close and had a grandson the age of my son, told us confidentially that their beautiful loving Golden retriever name Maggie had passed away 2 days before Christmas. They didn't want to ruin his holiday, and have it forever linked in his mind to Maggie's death, and I could easily understand that as I had an uncle that died Christmas morning, and my mother died on Halloween. So, our plan was to wait until Spring, and when he noticed the obvious absence of the dog, we would then explain Maggie had passed. However, like so many things with children that you plan to go a certain way, it backfired. We were sitting in the yard during a breezy day in March (I think), when he lowered his voice and beckoned us to come closer. He is speaking sotto voce, like a loud stage whisper, and says, "I think something has happened to Maggie". We were caught off guard for the moment. We looked at each other; then looked at my son. My husband said, "What makes you think that?" Then my little pre-school Columbo says, "Well I don't know if you've noticed, but in the past every time Maggie did #2 in the yard, they put an orange flag by it; then they would go around all at once and pick up every poop and remove every flag. I've been watching now for a couple of months, and I haven't seen anyone put out a single flag, so either someone has kidnapped Maggie, or she has died, because there is no dog in the world that can go for months without going to the bathroom". You can't refute a logical child this, lol. They make your life harder and easier at the same time. So, we finally told him, that Maggie had died and gone to heaven right before Christmas, but we hadn't said anything because we didn't want to ruin his holiday, and also because Maggie (our neighbor John's dog ) was John's best friend, and he was still having a hard time dealing with her loss. To which my ever-practical son says, "Well I don't understand. I mean he is so old that he is going to die and be with Maggie pretty soon, so that should cheer him up!". We said, "For heaven's Sakes, don't say THAT to him! Cheer up! You'll be dead soon and with Maggie". Kids say the darnedest things, and not only can they put 2 and 2 together, and make 4 without your realizing it, but they don't have tact and discretion at 4 or 5. What pops in their head, comes right out the mouth.
11/11/21 Happy Veterans Day to All of our deserving of this recognition of this day ❣️ Dr. John what a beautiful moment with Your son and Tfs 😘 it meant so much more to me than You will ever know! Lauren love you too and Tfs your knowledge and passion and creativity. You are both so wonderful
Revisiting the day both prosecution and defense rested. First of all it’s pretty astonishing how spot on you were before info was made public. However most important is that this podcast is timeless. Human tragedy, our mortality, social constraints, our need for love and sometimes legacy are in all of us. In the middle of the sensationalist coverage, sexting, outrage… it’s important to explore how this happened. The pathological denial of our mortality and irrelevancy, mental health issues and certain social acceptance of the inner circle really makes me think about agency…
I have not followed this case until the trial began and I really enjoyed this episode as a beginning Thank you for sharing the story of your son and showing us the power of living in the moment This is just fascinating to begin with Chad I’m hooked
Thank you for sharing this discussion. I appreciate your explanations is easy to understand terms. One thing, though, is in the beginning it was mentioned Chad and Lori are both in prison when, actually, they are in custody awaiting trial. Prison is for those who’ve been found guilty in a court of law. Sorry if that’s being knit-picky just thought I’d point it out.
What I would like to know is with all the cases Dr Babe works how does he prevent these heinous case he works on from hauting him. He is truly up close and personal with them. These people he evaluates are truly among the worst of the worst.
Mental Health Services should be made more accessible and free to everybody that needs it, not only to stay oneself healthy but for a chance to stop sick people from harming others.
In any case, in Chad’s blog he talked about his cemetery work really negatively affecting him - I guess he became aware of thoughts and feelings rearing their ugly heads.

Excellent podcast! It helped me understand the Chad Daybell story.
Loving this conversation. Thanks
Epic. The two of you are just incredible.
Dr. John and Lauren, thank you for providing your insights and expertise on this case. It has affected me and puzzled me greatly. I just want to understand why. In fact I was listening again to your previous podcasts last night. I could listen and learn from you endlessly. Praying for you both! 💜🙏🏼🙌🏽
Great job guys...thanks for your hard work...
EXCELLENT podcast. Thank you so much. And... the ending with the son... so touching and special. Thank you for that.
Loved this! It was just waaay too short!
Wow! Dr. John & Lauren Mathis this was AWESOME!
Appreciate you both.❤
Finding you all after the Netflix doc. I went back and watched your interviews on Mormon Stories after episode one. I found them pretty essential to understanding the case. Now I am going through the podcast as well :)
Love listening to both of you! I always learn so much! Thank you for sharing your intellects with us.
Excellent! Can't wait for the next one!
Wonderfully explained by Dr. John 😊Thank you for sharing your knowledge💚
Fascinating..I never knew about this...thank you for giving me some understanding about these people
If Chad wanted to “be somebody” in the church, he should have shown he could handle responsibility by… idk, HELPING SUPPORT HIS FAMILY. Crazy idea, right?
This is a very philosophical view of Chad Daybell, I cried when you contemplanted answering the question to your son. Thank you for these food for thought.
Best Podcast EVER ❤️💙
🩵💜💛💚❤💯
Chad has poisoned the pool of people and Lori's ego was caught up in being more special and fed her bottomless ego.
I am glad to be here today...I am so happy to
Hear what you say....it helps me to have a small
Understanding. Thank you
Excellent
Also his son Garth.
Has Chad created the next generation of monsters? We will find out...
Well I have to admit I agree with Lauren
I’m so glad these dinner time discussions have got longer
Although I appreciate How much time energy and preparation they take
Dr Jhon‘s perspective on things has taught me so much
So has Lauren’s willingness to be open and state her needs
That is so cool
LOVE YOU GUYS GREAT TEAM SO GLAD YOU FOUND EACH OTHER
I truly enjoy listening to you two.
Not sure why this came up as new today - I’ve heard it a few times last year! Dr John so fascinating 🧐
My husband said, "What makes you think that?"
Then my little pre-school Columbo says, "Well I don't know if you've noticed, but in the past every time Maggie did #2 in the yard, they put an orange flag by it; then they would go around all at once and pick up every poop and remove every flag.
Love to see an addendum to these fantastic discussions now that we have so much evidence between them.
Thank you Both, this is a great podcast 👏 🙌
11/11/21 Happy Veterans Day to All of our deserving of this recognition of this day ❣️ Dr. John what a beautiful moment with Your son and Tfs 😘 it meant so much more to me than You will ever know! Lauren love you too and Tfs your knowledge and passion and creativity. You are both so wonderful
So interesting.
Dr John you would do great on the Chris Watt's case
I didn't want this episode to end yet, either! Curioys, Dr John: why didn’t you think you would ever have & experience your child?
Helpful. Thank you🌷
I love this channel... Blessings and peace to y'all...
Wow amazing insight Fr John🇦🇺
Revisiting the day both prosecution and defense rested.
First of all it’s pretty astonishing how spot on you were before info was made public. However most important is that this podcast is timeless. Human tragedy, our mortality, social constraints, our need for love and sometimes legacy are in all of us.
In the middle of the sensationalist coverage, sexting, outrage… it’s important to explore how this happened.
The pathological denial of our mortality and irrelevancy, mental health issues and certain social acceptance of the inner circle really makes me think about agency…
Where has this channel been all my life!?!?!
I have not followed this case until the trial began and I really enjoyed this episode as a beginning
Thank you for sharing the story of your son and showing us the power of living in the moment
This is just fascinating to begin with Chad
I’m hooked
Thank you for sharing this discussion. I appreciate your explanations is easy to understand terms.
One thing, though, is in the beginning it was mentioned Chad and Lori are both in prison when, actually, they are in custody awaiting trial. Prison is for those who’ve been found guilty in a court of law.
Sorry if that’s being knit-picky just thought I’d point it out.
Love your channel. FYI, new research, trigger warnings cause anxiety.
You and Your Son Story Was Unbelievable Beautiful ❤️ It just effected my whole being ❤🙏
I come from an old criminal lineage and can tell that you 2 are on spot regarding criminal logic. Hmmmm...
Thank you both so much 👰♂️🤵♂️
All humans have the capacity for “evil.”
The moment I realized this I began to heal.
