Nice pitch for C&C. A great game and the Trolls are very nice people. I was very happy to pick up the entire A series for C&C and I also went back and picked up A1-6 for 5th edition as well. It's nice to see the Trolls getting some love.
Can you review GURPS Fantasy? I haven't heard too many people talking about it, and I'll probably run it at some point. It'd be good to hear people's opinions on running fantasy games in GURPS
Hi Carl. Thanks for the view. I haven't actually run GURPS for about 25 years or more when it was still in its 3rd Edition... so I probably would not be the best source for that right now. I know they revamped the way passive defense and damage absorption works in 4th Edition, but I haven't played the 4e version (despite owning many, many GURPS books). You might try searching videos on "GURPS dungeon fantasy". The Dungeon Fantasy box set is the newest (slightly streamlined) version of GURPS 4e for dungeon crawling.
@@Scubasgamecorner Too many things to keep track of. Is it prime or not prime? What level is the caster? What ability score is the save tied to? We were constantly looking stuff up. And finally we said "Why aren't we just playing AD&D, which we already know so well?" And because of how it scales, you don't necessarily get better at things. On the one hand this is nice because it keep things lethal. But it can also get frustrating as it still seems there are lots of failures even at mid-levels. Our characters were around 6th level when we quit.
I strongly disagree. There are differences. AD&D has a lot of crusty, poorly organized mechanics... and 5th Edition has a *lot* of super-heroic powers as the characters advance in levels. C&C has improved mechanics over AD&D, but the lower power curve of an old-school system. It's a bit of the best of both worlds.
Not even close. Castles & Crusades has been around for over FIFTEEN YEARS... A decade longer than 5e. It even pre-dates FOURTH edition. If anything, the designers of 5e took many cues from the old school games in order to make it feel more like them. 5e is a decent game, but it's still a bit over-powered for old school play without significant homebrew. C&C hit the sweet spot of old school play well over a decade ago, even before the OSR was a thing.

I am onboard with Castles and Crusades!
Great choice with C&C! I wish I had jumped on the band wagon long ago. And they offer an incredible military discount!
This sounds like right up my alley as far as what I want out of an RPG..... Which adventure modules would you recommend for 1-5 level characters
A0 and A1 are fantastic. Very old school flavor. A1 feels very much like Hommlet (and some Keep on the Borderlands).

@@RagingOwlbear thanks!
Thank you for those module recommendations! Not a fan of WotC.
We got into this for about 18 months but ditched it at the mid levels when it became obvious how broken the Siege Engine is.
interesting...could you please expound on that, I am interested in why before I jump into this game

@@sunsin1592 Thank you for your honest assessment, I still don’t know what system I want to use to run my first Fantasy game.
Might as well just play D&D! Shit gets boring people make new games but just the same as D&D!

@@RagingOwlbear Ok so its just a homebrew of 5E D&D
