  • In this video, I sew and Edwardian Bathing Costume from the Folkwear Pattern number 253. This is part of a series on Edwardian bathing costumes, first with this costume, a second one on the cap, a third sewing and drafting some bathing boots, and a final one trying it in the water.
Here is a link to the pattern: www.folkwear.com/collections/...
I apologize to everyone who relies on closed captioning. I got tired halfway through. Just that much took a couple hours.

I sewed that pattern about 11 years ago. It is not for beginners, I can say with vigor. I do love it. I did everything I was told to do in the instructions except I didn’t make pockets. I button the skirt onto the bloomers as they want you to, but I also wear it as a romper without the skirt sometimes. I sewed the modesty bib but didn’t attach it as directed and have never worn it. I do use the tie. I made the hat too but haven’t seen it in years. My fabric was purchased at an Amish quilt supply store in Ohio. It’s cotton, very dark blue with the tiniest black box in the print. I used black rickrack. You and I used the same exact buttons. I LOVE that it’s machine washable!!! I swim in the lakes in Washington state and it works great. I do remember taking my time with the pattern and that there were a lot of pieces. I love wearing it because you can play badminton, walk around, get in a car and go on errands, it’s very usable. I like your red trim. Thank you! (If there was supposed to be a skirt lining then I didn’t sew that either.)

I've been looking at a lot of bathing costumes from the 1890s but haven't gotten to the Edwardian era yet. Really like the red rickrack. I feel like it looks a little like a school uniform, it's so cute :)

Really nice work! I love how it looks on you. A really inexpensive pattern weight that a few people I know use is really big washers. They are usually pretty cheap and Hardware stores carry them so they are everywhere.

I've been dying to make one of those bathing costumes, but I do not yet have the skills. I loves the rick rack on yours. Very fun.

LOVE that you’re going off a cool old book inspiration! I’ve been craving Edwardian era things (Anne of Green Gables series!) and I’m working on a couple pieces! Well done!

If u were to choose a more modern fabric choice for this garmet what would you suggest? Im not convinced i want flannel.

I hope you'll make a video about it if you make a bathing or sports corset to go underneath your bathing costume! I've seen images of lightweight corsets with an attached bust-bodice, which would work well underneath a bathing costume, since the regular Edwardian corsets don't provide much in the way of bust support.

I really want to make this, but I haven't made a blouse before, and have only made one circle skirt (and my friend helped me). I have, however, made an Edwardian corset. Do you think I can pull it off?

My mom (born 1942) told me she had to wear a knitted bathing suit as a small child. Those were ok for playing in the sand at the beach, but when they got wet, they just soaked up water and got reeeeaaaallllly baggy in the crotch. I think she would have been been better off with the one you made!
