R.E.M.: Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stipe
Scott McCaughey, Nathan December
Live: November 18, 19 and 21 1995.
2. What's The Frequency, Kenneth?:
Lyrics:
"What's the frequency, Kenneth?" is your Benzedrine, uh-huh
I was brain-dead, locked out, numb, not up to speed
I thought I'd pegged you an idiot's dream
Tunnel vision from the outsider's screen
I never understood the frequency, uh-huh
You wore our expectations like an armored suit, uh-huh
I'd studied your cartoons, radio, music, tv, movies, magazines
Richard said, "Withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy"
A smile like the cartoon, tooth for a tooth
You said that irony was the shackles of youth
You wore a shirt of violent green, uh-huh
I never understood the frequency, uh-huh
"What's the frequency, Kenneth?" is your Benzedrine, uh-huh
Butterfly decal, rearview mirror, dogging the scene
You smile like the cartoon, tooth for a tooth
You said that irony was the shackles of youth
You wore a shirt of violent green, uh-huh
I never understood the frequency, uh-huh
You wore our expectations like an armored suit, uh-huh
I couldn't understand
You said that irony was the shackles of youth, uh-huh
I couldn't understand
You wore a shirt of violent green, uh-huh
I couldn't understand
I never understood, don't fuck with me, uh-huh
3. Crush With Eyeliner:
Lyrics:
I know you
I know you've seen her
She's a sad tomato
She's three miles of bad road
Walking down the street
Will I never meet her?
She's a real woman-child
Oh my kiss breath turpentine
I am smitten
I'm the real thing (I'm the real thing)
Have you seen her come around?
My crush with eyeliner
I'm in like.
I'm infatuated.
It's all too much-the pressure.
She's all that I can take
What position should I wear?
Cop an attitude? (you faker)
How can I convince her? (Faker)
That I'm invented too, yeah
I am smitten
I'm the real thing (I'm the real thing)
We all invent ourselves
and, uh, you know me
Yeah, she's a sad tomato
She's three miles of bad road
She's her own invention (She's her own invention)
That gets me in the throat
What can I make myself be?
Life is strange, yeah (Life is strange)
What can I make myself be (Fake her)
To make her mine?
I am smitten
I'll do anything (I'll do anything)
A kiss breath turpentine,
my crush with eyeliner
I am smitten
You know me (Yeah, you know me)
I could be your Frankenstein
my crush with eyeliner
I am smitten
I'm the real thing (I'm the real thing)
Won't you be my valentine?
My crush with eyeliner
These are the true R.E.M. with Bill Berry on drums.
As Eddie Vedder once joked, maybe the stage lights bounced off Mike's many rhinestone suits and caused Bill's aneurysm.
That's funny, but yet sad.. 3 of them ended up in the hospital.
So great seeing Berry on the drum kit.
this music is a joy, and the best musical band REM
No wonder the drummer got sick. I'm feeling sick just watching at those lights in the video. OMG.
Just brilliant. I really hated how they dumbed this song down in the later years. Lost the tremolo and PB introducing those 'licks' throughout the song as opposed to only following the bridge. But can't win them all! Really miss REM!
Peter Buck might be a very simple guitarist, but I've never heard him play a wrong note.
I notice you didn't mention mandolin.
Well they are....pros
These were the first two rock songs I discovered on my own. Great memories of this album, I bought it at Kmart lol
I LOVE Bill Berry! Though he may not be a technical drummer with super flashy chops, he managed to find the perfect beats for REM tunes and has played them flawlessly.
+Eduardo Rivera I just don't see why people have to comment on the style of every musician out there. unless you can do better piss off. REM were not technical at all, doesn't mean they are not not talented. only reason people make comments like you did, jealousy.. that pretty much says it all. put up or shut up.

+Jason Mixon What the hell? I love REM. If you weren't so clouded by negativity you would have been able to see that I am a fan and did not bash on the band at all. I merely admired Bill Berry's drumming style for being a suiting style for the band. Im not gonna bother explaining my comment because its pretty easy to see that. Shit, I've even made mix CD's for my girlfriend and now she's into them. Quit being such a diva. ;)
+Eduardo Rivera A diva fucking hilarious. Your pretty technical, an idiot as well.
+Jason Mixon Ok sure :) You know you lost this dumb TH-cam comment fight with your initial reply, right? I'll let you have the last word though, that is if you want it! Go ahead Mr. Diva...
I was there (2nd show of three in Atlanta). It was AMAZING.
My name is Kenneth. And when that song was released in 1994/95 my wife kept teasing me by asking me that question. She stop asking after we had 6 children. I guess the question was answered. (If you know what I mean).
In terms of being visceral Roadmovie was def the best live release by REM,and great memories from the summer of 95 for me,Milton Keynes!!!
+Dermot Godfrey Was there too! Saturday July 29th 1995. Support by Belly, Magnapop and Blur ! Best day ever !
guitar in this just duz it for me
3:22 , "Dont fuck with me!" xD
Brings me back when I was a kid good memories Lol Rockie Lerata from Lesotho
The perfect opening number ...
I literally feel the exact same way.
amo esta canción y a R.E.M 💜 Gran banda
Regarding the various technical abilities of the members - everyone played to the song. It wasn't about grabbing an opportunity to show off some chops, it was about creating and performing the song.
More than most bands, they were a band. Not a singer and back up, or singer with star guitarist, etc. It's why they always sound like REM, and why they spent about half of their career trying to not sound like REM. And just creating a new way to sound like REM.
Love REM
Love the scream at 2:43
Eddie Vedder sure loved Mike Mills' jackets, hard not to :) One great bass player too, and a backup vocalist who should be a front man because of how good he sings. Sadly for him, REM had Stipe, so backup it is :D

Bill Berry and Mike Mills: I'm the real thing!
Michael Stipe: Crush with eyeliner!
Is that Nathan December on stage on supporting guitar?
+Michael Giambra Yes LA club veteran and great guitarist Nathan December!!
Cual es la frequencies Kenneth???
Why does Michael's outfit keep changing during Crush? Seems they spliced two versions together?
LisaDawnn precisely. They used footage from this and the last night.
i could see a singer doing a hula hoop while singing
PAID TO CREATE...FOR WHOM??
I love how Monster is supposedly the 'rock' album when it's pretty slow tempoed and really classic WB REM poppier song constructions (Stand, pop song 89, get up, radio song). I mean, the guitar stuff is just annoyingly distorted and reverbed. Meanwhile New Adventures rocks and Buck's guitar playing is the perfect combo of rock riffs with explorative amp squeals and ringing notes. And the songs on it are uniquely built and very 90s in their emotive angle
The sound is and remains unique.
I never understood don't fuck with me!
well you better don't fuck up with him
they were a much better band with berry on drums he was ace
The super quick cuts in this video make it unbearable to watch. Yikes.
Good performance but who’s the chick on bass?
Mike Mills :p
Voluptuous goddess
Advanced in there time 5G program agenda all in the frequency.
Could have sworn this was Bumbershoot in Seattle
