I contested for the first time yesterday. Made 11 contacts as far away as TX, AZ, NM and FL from Michigan on 100 watts and a homemade dipole in my attic. It was fun and I’m hooked.

      Yes, contests can be addicting.

Great job Dave! Waiting for my 9th SO LP ARRL Sweepstakes Plaque, all obtained during 33 years of apartment or house QTH rentals, using homebrewed G5RVs or DX 1/2 Squares. I love my "total package" N3FJP logging software. Running stations from a rare "Mult" like Wyoming is like adding a Clippers Amp to the shack...at zero cost! 🤣73, Chuck N7MZW Cheyenne, Wyoming.

    Hi Dave,
Glad the SteppIR vertical is working well. Was planning on working the contest until our heating boiler gave out and left us with no heat. The aquastat failed, so I wired it so I could manually control the burner and circulating pump. Lost a lot of sleep because I needed to check the boiler every half hour or so. Waiting for a new control to arrive. 73 WB3BJU

A boiler problem certainly takes precedence over contest! Glad you were able to stay warm. Of course, if you had vintage equipment, the vacuum tubes would keep you warm.

My club is Microsoft OS only so N3FJP is the contest application we use. What I like about it is its totally keyboard input. No mouse required. It would be wise for the user to learn the hotkeys for quick, easy manipulation. Outside the club I use CQRLog on my Linux OS. 72 KB8AMZ

Can't reccomend N3FJP software enough for the casual contester. While with W9JWC (school club) we used N1MM logger which was great for running. Way more customization available including macros, but I don't want to spend hours setting it up for my own class A station.

Question about when you're first licensed. If you had your novice call in 1972 and then your General in 1976 which year would you use for the contest or does it matter? I have used my Novice year in contests past.

The first year you have received a amateur radio license. The others years are for upgrades to your license. Mike N6IMY

    HI Dave
Thank you for the video. I think wsf should be WCF for west central Florida.
See you in the next test.

Great video Dave, I have been trying contesting but not submitting a log also. It is very fun and does help sharpen your operating skill set.
