I was able to pickup a used BigIR 40-6m doesn’t have the 80m unit. I don’t agree totally with a couple of the comments. The SteppIR will out preform shortened & loaded antennas only because of their nature of traps and less than at least a 1/2 wave on all the bands where the SteppIR is even a 3/4 wave length on 15m & above. In addition it will cover the entire 6-40 spectrum with an swr 1.5. Personally (ymmv) but I have never had a trapped or shortened vertical that did this @ K9CRT station. I got a great deal on my antenna used, had to do a firmware update on the sda 100 controller and order new control cable otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to justify the cost. But for those who are in a touchy home owners restricting area it could be the way to go.

    It's $2,000. That's all I needed to know.

    Thank you, Dave.
You are right about vertical antennas!
They are pretty much the same. Price, assembly and tuning may be different, but they work the same. I like my Hustler 6-BTV, BUT IT IS SIMPLY A VERTICAL ANTENNA!!!
Some may be angry with David, but he has told the truth.

You can buy a SmallIR that covers 6-20 for less than $1,600 with a controller and their radial kit. You can also opt for the BigIR 6-40 with controller and radial kit for about $1,921. The 80m coil option is expensive for one band and can be opted at later time.

Thanks Dave for the great video. I have an AV-680 and I will agree that they work well but they are all the same in performance. Looking forward to hearing about your trip to Hamvention.

Does that Yeasu FT-101 behind you work, or is it just a keepsake?

Can that big CB antenna work Germany on less than a watt?
    My DIPOLE did last night.
For QRO I turn it up to TEN watts.

Guys and gals listen to KE0OG, he knows from which he speaks.....First licensed in 1965, I've built or bought lots of verticals which, most all the time, never did better than my cheapo wire dipole. These days I run the Wolf River "high power platinum" coil with about 8 ground radials and it works FB, but never as good as my 49:1 EFHW at 25' The Wolf River coil is very well built, a good design. 73/K6sdw

I have a 5BTV that has worked well for me but Yes radials will make ya or break ya.
But is it really necessary to put 10 turns of 6" on each end of my RG213 coax for decoupling??
Thats about an extra 40ft of coax. What about some ferrite beads or something? Thanks K0CXF

No. The vertical is inherently unbalanced, so no choke balance is required generally.
