Hello Bob Cieslinski ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Helsinki, Finland, in 2005, then together with their 1st female singer, Tarja Turunen. This was also Tarja's last performance with the band, she was fired right the concert, with an open letter..
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals) - you just heard her. She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile).
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Following the success of Beste Zangers show, Floor performed a series of solo concerts in the Netherlands in early 2020 with songs from her entire career (After Forever, Revamp, Northward, Nightwish, Beste Zangers) following that the last and the largest concert, at AFAS Amsterdam, to be professionally recorded and broadcast online, with the support of a crowdfunding campaign. After several rescheduling, due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the concert took place at the beginning of September 2021 in 3 consecutive days. Tarja lost out mainly because she didn't want to do "small" concerts. Annette was "christine" to " Tarja's "carlotta". Floor was the best and, most versatile singer.

Welcome to old Nightwish! Many people will come to tell you that you heard the wrong version because she is Tarja and not Floor (the singer now) but Tarja has something magical for me. this song makes me feel like I'm in a theater. Tarja (the first NW singer) has a wonderful voice and there are other songs where she shows her powerful voice. I recommend: the phantom of the opera, planet hell, slaying the dreamer, stargazers, nemo, sleeping sun, everdream, i wish i had an angel, etc etc. and she now has a solo career, I recommend: supremacy or victim of ritual (Woodstock), falling awake, anteroom of dead, to start getting to know her. I hope you keep reacting to her and don't put her aside just because Floor fans say the songs with Tarja are the wrong ones. Thank you! and I subscribe!

The Tarja era was great and I love it most. Watch out by the same concert for Wishmaster, Romanticide, Dark chest of wonders etc.
I highly recommend checking out more songs with their original singer, Tarja, both from this End of an Era show and their earlier concert Wishes to Eternity. There's also a lot of amazing stuff that's exclusive to the albums because there just wasn't good quality live recordings at the time. The live ones I would suggest most are "The Siren" and "Planet Hell" from this concert, "Wanderlust" and "Swanheart" from the Wishes concert, and "Beauty OF the Beast" studio version off their album 'Century Child.'
A lot of people will of course suggest jumping right into Floor, their current singer, but a lot of her stuff that people will point you to were originally by Tarja and more people should hear her versions first, in my humble opinion. Tarja has the largest catalogue of work with Nightwish with five albums while both her successors have only two each and yet she doesn't get nearly enough attention here on the reaction scene. The band was shaped around her voice and she is the one who brought it to prominence. She certainly deserves your time and attention.
I really like Beauty of the Beast -- the drums on that song are epic. I also like the version of Ever Dream from that album.

Always nice to see how the GREATNESS was started and since EVOLVED.The woman you see here performing is the one who gave symphonic metal A VOICE. Without this woman Nightwish would have gone to a different direction musically.TARJA was the reason Nightwish is symphonic metal. She is the ORIGINAL. In this performance you hear the grand composition, orchestra, symphonic metal at it's finest. As the singers changed, Nightwish's fanbase became divided, unfortunately. They define Nightwish by it's singers and nowadays it's Floor fanatics who overlook the history of Nightwish and try to steer reactors to Floor's direction telling she does everything better than ANYBODY. Don't believe the hype.If you want to understand the band, it's good to take a look on all the aspects of it. +25 years of history is a long time for a band and not one member makes it or breaks it, (except the keyboardist Tuomas, the creator of it all.)
Since many reactors are in it for the clicks and views only, they do as the fanatics tell them. FLOOR is worth of checking ofcourse, VERY WORTH OF. But she is not all there is. Also another claim you will read is, Nightwish is the best in LIVE. That is not the whole truth.In records/studio versions one can hear orchestral parts and little nuances as they were meant to be heard.All those fine details are often drowned in live recordings.Nightwish is a live band for sure and it's more entertaining to watch but never underestimate their recordings.Different kind of masterpieces.
My opinions may be unpopular ones but I don't care.I'm fan of the band in all it's glory.If you dive deep in this treasure chest you are in for some real TREATS. Nightwish is a band and should be respected as such. All it's members past and present have contributed to the band.And as for Tarja:The woman is a workaholic and versatile.She has been solo artist since +16 years and is doing more than fine in her own career.She is doing metal and opera music and she does different tours according which type of music she is performing. She seems happy and she is planning to go on LONG TIME, according to her new book.

I don't know, but is it wrong to find Nightwish better with Floor? I'm a fan of Year 9 back. I think the voice fits better than Tarja's when I listen to it again. Tarja was good but I think Floor is better to listen to than with Tarja. But it started with Tarja. And kudos for that.
This was what the band wrote in 2004. It fit perfectly. Not a thing wrong with it then or now. AS befits the band back in 2005. 10 years on they do another version best fitting the band as it was then. With new members. Two of 3 founders ( Tarja was the 3rd) having grown and changed and in different places in their lives. Floor does not just want to slavishly copy Tarja or Anette no matter how much she loves her friend Tarja and how she did it. At best you could match it. And that is limiting. Inspired yes but she is an artist in her own right. The band does not want to slavishly do what they did before as it was before. It was recorded. You can pull up the album or the live video from then. It is pointless to not change. So they do new versions of the old favourites. Respect what went before. Respect who you are now. If one version over another is preferred then that is not in control of the band. Solely up to the listener. No apologies needed. You pay your money, you make your choices.

Nightwish is their own genre,.....enjoy the deep drop of this particular rabbit hole. It is a lot of fun and funny enough their songs are all different.....Try the Waken 2013 version of this...it is different vocally but the music seems to fit. I love all eras of Nightwish...this one was the first singer Tarja....she was the start. You should also listen to The Siren from this same concert. Tarja and Marko (the bassist) kills it.

I am glad that you got to know Nightwish with their first vocalist, co-founder Tarja Turunen. She is my favourite one since I like the dark, classical sound of her voice. The greatest moment when the glitter comes....the best piece of music there is...from the best band there is...simple as that. This is unique band and no-one can do the same....perfect group...just check more since 1996 until now. Pay attention to the intelligent deep lyrics too....the keyboardist it a Metal Mozart genius. This concert was the final date of their hugely successful world tour and their return to Finland. The date was October, 21. 2005. Hartwell area, Helsinki Finland. Though Taja ( tar-yee-ah tur rUn en) is from a small town called Kitee, Finland.
She was a founding member and with the band until this night.
They had 5 albums, several EP;s, festivals, live events and 2 full length concerts on DVD. wishes from Eternity from befoe Marko joined as bassist and male vocalist. 2002. then this celebrating the 5th album Once. the tour was called Once upon a tour at the time. Only afer did it become the end of an era.
No she did not kow their plans to fire her. They did though. She was singing with a cold through the show. Trooper that she is, the show goes on.
Now she does not just sound like an opera singer. She actually HAS sung opera pieces. She has Christmas music, light and dark, synphonic metal. folk metal. even a popish song snuck in, she is a full soprano and her high notes will knock your socks off. ( try the Muse cover of Supremacy 2016 Masters of rock: nee Woodstock in Poland.) then her current project Outlanders a stripped down and unique style 8 years in the planning.

This has always been my favorite version of the song. All of the music ties everything together with Tarja's breath taking vocals.
I do like Floor's version aswell. She's more versatile as a singer and suits the band the best now. She just lacks that something, Tarja has. The original work of Nightwish is beyond perfect! Haha I watched the Floor/Wacken 2013 version about 100 times, but this is the first time I watch the Tarja version. It's interesting to notice the differences and see how the song evolved from here.
Yep I’ve seen both and they are different. Both are excellent.
Now may I suggest listening to this with the band's current (since 2012) singer, Floor Jansen of The Netherlands. Particularly the Wacken 2013 rendition (For that matter, the entire Wacken 2013 concert-- a legend in symphonic metal circles.) Each of NW's singers have been wonderful but Floor takes it to a whole new level.

You will no doubt get some stick for not reacting to the Floor Jansen version, but it doesn't hurt to see this version. I think in this version you can understand the band better, because the vocal doesn't dominate. Floors version of Ghost Love Score is all about her and her insane vocal, this version is more about the whole band (even though the band is still fantastic in the Floor version).
A lot of Nightwish fans don't want to admit that the reason they are such a popular band to react to is because of Floor.
However, I would argue that most fans are of the opinion that Floor is exactly as talented a singer as a Nightwish-level band should be! ...just like Tarja was on her own time; unique, like the whole Nightwish was and still is!
The instrumental music is what drew me to Nightwish. The first 3 songs I viewed were Phantom, GLS and Amaranth. Tarja, then Floor, and then Anette. I am a fan of all three, and the time they spent with the band.
It does get irritating that the rest of the band gets overlooked entirely when people just talk about floor. Extremely talented collection of musicians.
I think its because Floor is a bit like Freddy in Queen, she has that special live aura, she own the stage and her presence is 150%..... First time you watch any wacken song it can be overwhelming.

I enjoy this version, but think that the Wacken 2013 performance with our Goddess Floor Jansen is much better. Martine left you the link in the comment below. You will find that their is a schism in the Nightwish community about who they feel is their favorite or best singer. Ultimately, this band has amazing songs with complex composition and deep lyrics regardless of which singer performs them. Another truly epic song is The Greatest Show on Earth at Tampere, but you are not prepared for that yet.
I would encourage you to follow the wealth of information that Gabriel left for you and you will not go wrong.

i saw Floor when she was just starting in the netherlands breaking through in the local cirquite. I saw her a couple of times very much enjoying meself but not that into that. And suddenly she was gone. Years later i found out she got into nightwish.

This was 2005 with Tarja Turunen, and her great operatic tones. Like everyone will be mentioning, you should check out the version from Wacken 2013, with current lead singer, Floor Jansen. All of their music with all three singers have qualities worth checking out. Following Gabriels list will keep you busy for a while.
Welcome to the rabbit hole of Nightwish btw. This will give you countless moments of joy. The true quality of this band is the ability to evoke emotions through their music, and I'm sure you'll know what I mean after some listening. Their music is very diverse, and yet recognizable. They always surprise you, but never disappoints. This rabbit hole is also full of sidechannels, and I'm pretty sure that you soon will have listened to other bands like Sabaton, Epica, Unleash the Archers, and Ayreon. You might bump into Within Temptation further down as well.

everyone knows Floor, she's super popular with everyone, especially right now, and is a really good singer, having a huge variety of singing capability (pop, classical/opera, belting, growling/raspy), able to sing nightwish's old songs that were for Tarja's classical/opera singing, as well as new songs for her own variety/range of singing abilities
Unfortunately for Annette, she's a pop/rock singer, and a very good singer too, but her pop/rock singing just didn't go that well with nightwish's music, which was made for Tarja's dark classical/opera singing. So, usually, she gets left out.
so, it comes down to "Targasm” (Tarja) vs “Floorgasm” (Floor) in terms of the Nightwish singers in who you like most, if you like classical/opera singing better, Tarja is better at it, but that's all she does back when with nightwish, as nightwish was created for tarja's unique dark operatic singing/voice, (now with her own band, or solo, she does a greater range of singing), but she does it really well, she's really got a beautiful voice, if you like more pop singing, belting and growling/raspy, with or without classical/opera singing, than you like Floor better
I knew nightwish from the early 2000s, so Nightwish will always be with Tarja, but Nightwish with Floor is really good too, but it's Tarja, who's my favorite singer with nightwish

This is the old Nightwish with their first singer Tarja. She was a great singer at that time - but Nightwish have evolved immensely since the Tarja era.
From 2013, their new singer are Floor Jansen - widely considered to be the most powerful, versatile, skilled and talented singer in this century.
When Floor joined Nightwish, Tuomas the composer and writer of 90% of their songs - realized that he didn't have any kind of limitations any more in his writing - Floor could/ can do everything from opera to growling, and with incredible voice techniques to express emotions and passion.
And that is pretty clear when you listen to some of newer concerts from 2013 and up. Both Tarja and Floor are both completely incredible in their live performances - much better than their studio recordings - but Floor is considered to be the greatest metal live singer today.

Nightwish is great band, but to be honest I like only their songs with first singer, Tarja Turunen, this one you heard in this song. Tarja was first female singer with operatic style of singing in metal music, before were some colaborations etc. with opera singers or choirs, but she was first as band member, thanks to her many girls started singing in metal music with beautiful operatic vocals. Probably many people will tell you that she is not good, that present singer is better (I think they are completely different and it's big mistake to compare them), but because of Tarja Nightwish started making music like this, on the beginning it was acoustic band, only piano, acoustic guitar and her vocal, but she has too strong voice to such acoustic music, that's why they started making symphonic metal songs and because of her these all fans, who now love Nightwish with Floor Jansen (present singer) and criticize Tarja, can listen now band which they love that much.

So cool you are from Poland. Yes, I have Polish roots and I was raised learning about those roots. It was important for us and it was pretty cool hearing my grandparents talk in Polish. I’ve eaten many Polish foods because of my grandparents too and heard lots of stories. My family actually has a family crest which was pretty cool to find.
Thanks for thr background on Nightwish and their singers. She has a powerful voice and there is no way it would have sounded as good with all acoustic instruments. They made the right call changing their style to suit her. So glad you watched the video and I’m so happy to have connected with someone like you who is all the way from Poland. You're welcome for informations about Nightwish background. About singers, between these two was another one, Anette Olzon, but she has more pop sounding and she don't really matched to band and songs originally with Tarja were really hard for her to sing. Floor Jansen is third singer.

As much as i LOVE Floor i really want to give Tarja some LOVE also....Nemo, Wishmaster, Wish i had an angel and The phantom of the opera. In those songs...Floor can't do anything to make it better even though Floor is my favourite overall 🙏

This is my favorite version. The Wacken version just sounds flat to me. It’s also missing the choir. In this version, Tarja is a part of the song. In the Wacken version, Floor sings over the song. It’s a pity.
I Love Tarja but she sounds less powerfull than Floor in this Song and where is the best part with the long high belting? Floor did the better Version at Wacken 2013.

@@marcbaur677 The belting didn’t exist until Annette was in the band. Plus, the belting isn’t that great anyway. I really don’t know why people focus on it. They act like they’ve never heard anyone belt before. I grew up listening to singers do a much better job than that. The ending was supposed to focus on the bands and the choir. This version sounds less powerful, but the Lowlands 2005 version is much better. Tarja was extremely I’ll during this concert. She couldn’t even sing at morning rehearsals, so her doctor told her to cancel. Luckily, she didn’t.
@Robert Åström Yeah, she’s ok. There are a lot singers that can do what she does. She’s mediocre at everything she does. In that case, Versatility doesn’t mean anything. And, yes, her belting is subpar when compared to the greats. Why are you even here if Tarja is so boring? Are you another one of the paid bots? You obviously don’t know much about Tarja’s career if you think she’s limited. Hopefully l, Floors paying you good money, and you’re not one of the fanatics doing this for free.

Tarja is good at her style of singing, but, personally, I prefer Floor Jansen for her wide range of styles. Shhallow, Phantrom of the Opera at "Beste Zangers 2019" and with Nightwish at wacken 2013 Ghost Love Score, Storytime, Romanticide. and at Wembley Shudder Before the Beautiful. Poet and the Pendulum, Greatest Show on Earth.

Epic song yes, but in Nightwish world its just song #13 of #15 that night, and one song of about 120. They do thrash metal to ballads, celtic, folk, power metal, acoustic... and all to an insanely good level. The latest singer Floor jansen will knock you out of your seat. Keep digging, this band changes your life musically.
i have to say this song with floor jansen as singer is way better, but Tarja Turunen is a great singer too in other songs like phantom of the opera the version with tarja is my favorite one
