Racquet Stringing [Racquet Stringer's Journey]

  • When I started stringing 47 years ago, my first experience was stringing a wooden racquet, which took me 1-1/2 hours to complete. That didn't discourage me. Little did I know then that racquet stringing would become a passion and a profession.
In this video, I'll share my journey as a racquet stringer and describe three phases that all stringers experience in their development to become the Jack of their Trade.
    EXPERIENCE - ROUTINE - CONSISTENCY
But wait, there is a 4th phase, which some stringers share! THERAPY
What do you think about the connection of stringing with therapeutic benefits?
I'd love to hear your comments below!

I, like you and many of us who come together here on your channel with your great content, am very passionate about Tennis, and all racquet sports in general. I love to geek out on the equipment that goes into these sports, and the science behind it all with the fun gadgets and gizmos.
Stringing for me has indeed become therapeutic. It's an art, and has this calming sense about it (unless your client is coming in 15 minutes and you just started the crosses on their racquet! lol).
When it's performed well, it's like watching a painter paint, or a woodsman craft and is inspiring. Stringing is fun, I love being able to take something that is broken, and fix it - not to mention one other huge plus for me, which is helping others 😊🤙

      Aloha Ken,
It's nice to hear we share the same passion for racquet stringing! In fact, the way you describe your passion sounds exactly like my "About" page for this channel!
Stringing in my shop is not just a job, it's a source of personal satisfaction. Even after a long, challenging day on the court, it's a therapeutic escape that I look forward to.
However, when I'm stringing at a pro tournament, it's challenging and rewarding in a demanding way but not therapeutic. 😅

Mate, stringing for me at the moment is absolute relaxation time…I chuck on my headphones and just chill into it. I bought a Spinfire Blaze this year which is a crank machine, 6 mount with the stand and just love using it. Still trying to speed up my weaving but I’m never in a rush as I’m just stringing mine and my hitting partners racquets. 10yrs ago though, I had a drop weight and didn’t enjoy stringing with that at all. Happy I spent the extra this time. Thanks for all your videos too as I’ve gained some valuable tips👌👌

Aloha, Thanks for your comment and glad to hear my videos are helpful in your journey. And yes, having the right kind of machine is important to enjoy the string process, which then becomes part of the therapy. 🤙

aloha and thank you albert. again a very informative and helpful video. i started stringing about 40 years ago on a klipstringer. since i was new, i found the floating clamps caused a lot of string gouging and drop-weight very cumbersome. soon after i bought a true tension. i never found myself in a rush to break any records. over the last many years, i take my time stringing for enjoyment and quality. stringing brings me peace and relaxation for a good hour or more especially with hawaiian music (don ho) in the background...

      Aloha Coach Dudley,
Stringing on a high-quality machine is a major part of that enjoyment! These days, I find myself watching TH-cam videos while I string. 😉

Thank you for all of your videos! I restrung a racquet for the first time a few days ago, and already I can see the parallels to therapy. It was super satisfying both as a process itself, as well as to then also see the final result afterwards

      Aloha Megan,
You're welcome, and CONGRATULATIONS! It's nice to hear that you enjoyed the process. Before you know it, you'll develop a routine and your consistency. You already have the therapeutic part!
You have a bright journey ahead of you!! 👍

Stringing is definitely therapeutic. For me, it is also the only moment I get to listen to music without any disturbances, and although I plan on getting to string faster, I'm not rushed at all.
Also, getting to know your machine is important to achieve relaxation. The more you get used to it the more you can flow.

      Aloha Javier,
It's nice to hear that stringing is therapeutic for you! Listening to music is a common theme when stringing. For me, however, it's watching TH-cam videos.
Being "one with your machine" contributes to efficiency and relaxation, which leads to the therapy phase.
      Happy stringing! 🤙

It is a therapy when i string only a handful of racquets weekly. :)
note: i am not a pro. just a home stringer doing it for fun.

      Aloha Brian,
It's nice to hear that stringing at home is fun for you! It's the same for me in my shop.
However, when I'm stringing at a pro tournament, it's challenging and fun in a demanding way, but not therapeutic. 😅

From my own experience, depending on the level of "creep", I've had tension loss of 5-10% for poly strings after 12 hours, before even hitting a single ball !! So, I never take the ERT recommendation for restringing seriously.

    • @AMstringing
      @AMstringing  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Aloha Casius,
The initial creep can be significant (sometimes shocking) for some strings. For your purpose, consider taking a reading after 12 hours and before you start playing. Then, use that measurement as your baseline reading to track tension loss. 🤙

@@AMstringing Totally agree. Already do that 😀👍
