What a crap comment by Zakk. I ran the stage at one of the largest casinos in the plains states. IF you (really) work in professional entertainment then you already know Brett Michaels is THE most genuinely nice and truly thankful artist touring today. His shows are ALWAYS full sells including comps and LOUD. After the show he will literally walk out of his way to thank every stagehand he sees. I have many pics with him and he never says no, even to temp crew. The last time I worked his show as stage manager before my permanent medical retirement he even remembered my NAME for god's sake. I've done Brett at least 4 times, and Zakk once on that Hendrix tour. Zakk is a madman on stage and running around the house, but let me assure everyone here that Brett Michaels is the genuinely nicest MF'er in the touring game and everybody knows it. Pure class. Zakk didn't even look at anybody. Just saying.
No doubt. Trogly has even taught Gibson a thing or two about their own guitars. They ought to be paying him. I also vote for a Trogly signature Les Paul with Trogly's dragon inlaid in the headstock or painted on it or something. Gibson give this man a signature an hire him as the Gibson company historian or something. Curator of the Gibson museum!
@@gerryyancey6698 wtf are you talking about though? It's not as if the history books and Wikipedia are being erased. History is there for anyone to learn about it. A statue or a guitar is barely even relevant to what you are saying. By your logic I should get a swastika-adorned Hitler guitar just in case history is forgotten...as if anyone is forgetting the biggest events of the 20th century.
On lighter note, I like how Trogly suggested Zak had sanded the finish to make it more comfortable to play, the addition of the beer bottle tops, not so much
I knew the first riff you were going to play before you even started! 🙂As a Brit with no real historical baggage I find the first thing that flag brings to mind is Skynyrd. The second is those darn Duke boys of Hazzard County. Glad you decided to document this piece.
Skynyrd really didn’t even want to use the flag…MCA Records insisted on it , mostly for a tie in with “Sweet Home Alabama”. Even they knew that the flag was associated with the KKK.
Same here. Memories of the dukes of hazard throwing the General Lee around the place. I wonder how many Dodge Chargers they actually went through in making that show. Personally I'd happily play that guitar on stage, the UK history just isn't the USA's.
I have my own opinions, like “they shouldve let Sherman finish the job”. But it is interesting to talk about. A little weird how Reverb is kneejerking over not selling it, it’s a historic piece and we gotta talk about the whole shebang.
Sherman is the guy who realizes that--the Confederacy will only give up if the price of the war becomes so terrible, that the Southern public will just say "enough" Kind of like that story Marlon Brando relates in Apocalypse Now--the Viet Cong have to be completely ruthless, even to their own people, to drive the Americans out
@@westbethkid Wow, coping hard and defending the mass murder of innocent civilians and slaves... Insane.... Imagine thinking Sherman should have genocided whole cities.
What do you expect it's cancel culture I'm surprised gibson has been canceled for making them, they already tried to cancel dime and he was dead for 20 freaking years. It's so aids, and amazing how easily this generation had been brain washed to thinking silencing speech is a good thing.. Kinda like how everything nazii related in Germany is completely against the law and you'll get thrown in jail for it. Smooth brain thought processes only those who want to erase history think its a good idea. It's so dumb
There was a Guitar World or Guitar Player (not sure which guitar magazine it was in) in the mid 90's. In said interview, Zakk said the bottle Cape and a grinder to the guitar happened when he heard Brett Michaels had the same guitar. he didn't want to look to similar to his.
@@devinwalker2246 Oh my gosh, and now I know the rest of the story! I gotta say, I find that hilarious! Better he set it on fire than bite the headstock off!
Important correction from the tour flyer and what you said about the Allman Brothers. They actually did not approve of using the flag, and Gregg Allman said that if you ever see merchandise, or anything involving the Allmans and the rebel flag, just know it did not go through them. Skynyrds use of the rebel flag actually caused tension between the two bands back in the day (Derek Trucks has a story about this from his uncle, Butch Trucks, who was one of the two drummers for the Allman brothers) .
Skynyrd did not use the flag . That was MCM idea cause those great liberal record execs wantdd to create turmoil to sell records. I cant beleive people still fall for these tactics
Your demo introduction took me back to a couple of weeks ago at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida. Took my 17 year old grandson to his first concert… Lynyrd Skynyrd. And I must say you pretty much nailed the sound of those intros! Of course, he loved it! Nothing like introducing your grandson to “Freebird” played live! Great job, Trogly!
One day I was in the local music store and in came a man with a Gibson guitar in a new finish and the son of owner came out with a flying V in a new color and they asked me what I thought of it. The color was purple burst. It was a pretty finish but I wasn't in to Flying V's but I did love the color. Boy, if I knew it would be a rare color I would have gotten it. It was a pretty color and the man was a Gibson Representative. 🤔🤯 True story.
Everyone has a mental image of their "place", regardless of the truth. Say Italian-American and what comes to mind is the art of Florence, not the slums of Naples. Well Southern rockers did the same thing, singing about an easy live and let live lifestyle of "sweet home Alabama". Don't forget that the Allman Brothers were an integrated Band...but had to watch their backs being long-haired "freaks". It seems things didn't change that much from the Jim Crow days, it was just easier to invent a false image of the "new South" than facing up to the truth. So what to do about that guitar? Destroy it, just like that. Yes that's a tough call but if you put it on display because of it's "historical content" then you better damn well make sure your version of history includes the suffering that's reflected in that finish. The world doesn’t seem half as ugly when you’re not required to pay attention.
@@westbethkid It represents the rebel spirit, the spirit that founded the US in the first place. @@hailmaryrecordings8255 No, the current 50 star flag was created when there were no slaves. The trick here is to paint the sides and back orange and add an “01” to the back. Then complete the transformation by hucking it over the nearest barn or creek while banjos play frantically in the background The guitar is very interesting and odd to keep it simple. I understand the push back from people based on the looks alone but the fact you probably won’t be able to sell it online kinda feels out of pocket. The worst part to me as an artist is that they charged someone a lot of money to build that guitar and they didn’t even take the time to space the stars out evenly! TRAGIC! Great video, Trogly! I think you handled the subject very well given the circumstances at hand!
A very interesting and significant guitar, I was surprised this is such an unusual finish as I had envisaged a lot of people in the 80s and 90s would have this finish given the popularity of southern rock bands.
You better get your history correct then. that is not the Confederate flag, it's the Rebel flag. the actual Confederate flag is similar to the United States flag except with additional color's.
Gibson did make an oversized explorer prototype for Dimebag in the 90s. Probably only the one that’s still in his wife’s possession. Iirc it was plain blue. Saw it on a video a few years back. Dime did have a very rare Ace Freely played on stage.

Glad to see that people can understand that throughout history, that flag has meant different things to different people. People that stopped waving it now, in order to not offend, are not bad people because they did it when few, if any, were offended before.
The Confederate Flag and the Rebel Flag (also known as the Southern Cross) were 2 different flags. The "Rebel" Flag was the Confederate Battle Flag and was flown exclusively on the battlefield. The actual "official" Confederate Flag had a red, white and blue background like the Texas Flag with a circle of 13 stars in the blue.
Way too many snowflakes out there. People need to grow up, it's a part of history and for over 150 years wasnt a sign of disrespect. It is just a sign that you are from the south. The swastika is a religious peace sign for prosperity and has been for over 1000 years. Then one person used it in a war lasting less than a decade and people just associate it with that.
Those strap mark on the top of the guitar probably didn't take that long to happen. I have an explorer and the same thing happened to the neck, however, the strap was only left against the neck for a week. You could imagine my surprise when I opened the case and found that :(

Haha i knew you would bring up Zakk’s guitar too! I feel the same about the guitar as you do Trogly but I also really appreciate you still making this episode!
I'm from the South. We all understand the difference between culturally significant heritage and offensive symbolism. People that cry about the Confederate flag being Southern Heritage rarely if ever confine its use to places dedicated to exploring and preserving Southern Heritage. They wear it on their hats, their shirts, their vehicles, their houses. They buy flag poles. Hell, they even rent billboards, I'm not kidding. When this flag is intentionally used in the South, it is almost always a veiled threat. It's meant to make people uncomfortable. When you grow up here and know the people the fly it, that's obvious. It's passive aggressive bullshit at its finest. You can go to a WWII museum if you want to see a swastika. This should be no different. There are state parks that preserve battlegrounds, there are preserved Forts, museums, Civil War re-enactments all over the place. The Heritage of Slavery and the Civil War is alive and well. When this guitar was made, people had different ideas about this particular flag. But regardless, when you paint this on a guitar you're celebrating it as a symbol whether you recognize it or not. This guitar has nothing to do with heritage or culture. We should all recognize that by this point. I just don't see where anyone benefits from platforming this symbol again. If the only thing that makes this Les Paul special is that it has a hate symbol painted on it, I just don't see the point. Do better Trogly. Make a video where you throw it off a building into a woodchipper. That would be worthwhile content. Maybe take off the hardware and put it in a kit guitar, sell it and give the money to a charity for something BIPOC related. Just to be clear, I'm a dorky white guitar nerd, not a social justice warrior. I'm just disappointed.
It was built a long time ago and Gibson didn’t mean anything by it so you can’t hold it against them. To the extent that guitar history is important, the flag guitars are important. Thanks for sharing.

As a historian and flag maker, I find the whole issue around the one type of battle flag, adopted by hate groups, fascinating because there were literally dozens of styles of confederate battle flags. The "Stars and Bars" or St. Andrew's cross style gets all the grief. If ai painted a guitar blue with a white circle in the middle, (The Hardee style battle flag) nobody would give a rats ass. Yip...that's the real story.

16:04 For a moment there I thought that was a sound bite of Fry from Futurama lol.
its just a battle flag, it only carries weight if you give it weight. you cant change history, just learn from it.
According to the scale, it carried a lot of weight.
Austin…I’d love to own that guitar. It’s a piece of history. Please let me know if you choose to sell it.
To me it represents the greatest tv car ever, a 69’ Charger R/T General Lee. That’s it 🤘🤘
Nah man that's lightning McQueen
Not gonna lie, the General has more "air-time" (TV and physically) than any other car.
The '69 Charger's lines look like a street fighter, Bad-A$$
@@neil2706 bruh, stop it
That flag was not originally a flag that denoted racism it was a battle flag used by Southern troops. It was turned into such by organizations like the KKK and other racist people. These days the common perception that it is a symbol of racism as most racists use it as such.
Great episode, as always Trogs.
Zakk destroyed the top of the guitar BECAUSE of Brad Michaels. He hated that guy and didnt want to be seen as the guy who has a guitar just like Michaels:) I got it from an Interview of zakks maaany years ago.
Yep. Trog’s usual level of research.
Good job Austin!👋
As an Englishman I want to understand the issue with this flag more obviously it was the flag of the south (I don’t think it was officially the flag though) who fought for slavery but why today do people fly it ? Is it because they’re racist ? or is it because they want to rebel against the system ? Or maybe both ? Either way what is it that people find offensive in particular and why do people fly it ?
Fought for slavery? LMFAO. Where did you hear that hilarious lie, from yankee propaganda? Nobody in the war fought to keep or free slaves. The flag was flown when the Berlin wall was torn down. It's a symbol of the American spirit, rebellion against tyranny. The spirit that founded the US.
Z is for retired. I don’t get offended by any symbol, good or evil. Too many whiny punks in this world. I really need to live off grid.
Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia did not succeed until Lincoln raised an Army to invade the South. That flag was not the flag of the Confederacy. It was the flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. It's a shame that people on both sides of the issue are ignorant of this fact. And by the way, I have ancestors that fought on both sides. I'm will not let anyone tell me to hate my ancestors. I'm not falling for that garbage. Southern by the Grace of God baby. That doesn't make me a racist.
The South fired first
@@Gavin79746 This is exactly the ignorance I'm talking about. Tennessee didn't succeed until June of 1860. Two months after Fort Sumter and only after Lincoln mobilized 75000 Yankee devils. Get your history right.
Beautiful guitar! Is this for sale?
Oh no! The stars and bars! I so offended I can't stand it! Quite being milquetoasts, and grow up. You know what happens when you're offended? Nothing. Not one damn thing. Trog, the hand wriniging over a guitar...pathetic.
The Union had a cooler flag, I’d love to see that on a guitar 🇺🇸
Trogly Should have had a white Les Paul signifying the flag the southerners also flew🤣🤣🤣
@@Wilco1972 I don't think the Confederates ever flew the French flag. Either way, the fact the South fought for so long was a great feat. Only cowards hate the Confederates, they embraced the rebel spirit that founded the US.
Fun fact: between that flag and the flag on the guitar, only one is officially recognized by a certain hooded organization with a burning passion for lower-case Ts.
It isn't the one on the guitar.
@@TylerJohnstonGuitar They wear hoods because the original were vigilantes stopping the criminals that police no longer arrested in the South during "reconstruction". These included people who outlawed whites from voting, and only letting blacks vote (which included forced voting because so many were illiterate). Whites in the reconstruction era were treated as a class lower than slaves.

@@Trog is this rebel flag guitar on sale? let me know about it!!
I grew up watching Dukes of Hazzard alot, so I always associate the flag with the General Lee
But I understand the controversy behind it, but I am also Canadian
That's funny, I always associate "General Lee" with that awful confederate general who sent hundreds of thousands to their deaths over the right to own people as property. What a weird coincidence that they have the same name? Guess there must just be a lot of "General Lee"s in the south?
Wouldnt be surprised if J. VZ ordered this as a gift for Gary Rossington right before the "re union" tour in 87.
bro stop acting like you don't think this guitar is freakin sweet! you're not getting canceled
The way some of these fully grown babies behave...you never know.
"It was cool back then to be patriotic" (while showing the union jack). Sad- but true. But the only reason you can even make these videos today is because of patriotic people. Good lord, young people. I swear.
I think the band Black Oak Arkansas had a member who played one of those.
He had a deluxe
No need to apologize for history. To Lynard Skynerd and the Allman Brothers, the flag meant southern heritage to them. Not slavery...
People today are nuts. History is what it is, and someone is always into drama and being offended by everything. Keep up the good work and apologize for nothing unless hurting someone was done intentionally, then it is warranted.
I live near buffalo, NY. On the anniversary of the supermarket shooting my neighbor put up a Confederate flag. Crazy that people take offense, right?!?
Which is to say that the US was built on shameless people?? I'm sure at the time of the colonization people brought some of the good manners with them too. Like if you did wrong by someone, even if unintended, you felt like it was good manners to apologize.
Back here in the old World, it sure works that way.
Aww can't handle people disliking racist bullshit? Do you need your baby pills? People who complain about those who dislike a completely racist piece of history aren't worth our time as a society. Go learn how to not be so broken
It's not just "your heritage" or some shit. It's not some family heirloom. The people down here need to stop crying about how they can't fly a flag of racist traitors. And yes, they were racist. The Confederacy started to protect slavery. The war started with a paranoia fueled preemptive strike by the Confederacy because they wanted to ensure they'd keep their slaves when they weren't even gonna be taken away. The Confederacy was a bunch of racist hicks. It's not able to be debated in any valid way. It's just a fact. Stop being so offended that your racist family isn't socially able to be racist. You knobs are yet another reason I hate being in this part of the country. I'm so happy I didn't have any of you in my known ancestry.
@@russell2910it’s crazy to you that people are offended by the slavery flag representing millions of deaths? It’s crazy to me that you’re that tonedeaf.
The south fought to keep their slaves, and they lost. Their traitor flag should have all been burned and buried. Would you be shocked that people were offended at a swastika? Because they are close to the same thing.
Our species is always going to be dirt as long as people take joy from offending others.
The Ibanez destroyers with the rising sun flag had similar criticism cause it features the flag Japan flew during ww2
Cringe

The Designer Series white V's, with the blue paint splatter, was what hooked me on guitars as a 13 year old. There were a couple of those Designer Series guitars, aside from just the white V, in the local music store, and I used to just stare at them, up on the wall, and made me want one! A guitar like that seemed sooooooooo far out of reach to me at the time. Here I am today, at almost 52, and I'm fortunate enough, blessed enough...whatever, to have some very exotic and gorgeous guitars in my own collection. But wow, those ads take me back!
I had the white v with black and silver pinstripes with the gibson pos trem , the trem ruined a decent guitar.
Having played in numerous southern rock bands I've been seeking a Gibson confederate flag guitar for years with no luck, and you just happen to stumble across one. Go figure.
History is just that History! Learn from it or live to repeat it. Well done Trogly
My only complaint is, The ABB in all my 45+ yrs of being a fan, has NEVER flown that flag, but many others have and still do. Not offended. i used to fly it myself, but after becoming friends with many people from differrent backgrounds realized it could hurt their feelings, or their opinion of me for doing so. Im really glad my Colombian girlfriend back in the day talked me out of getting that tattoo!
Exactly. Gregg said that if you ever see anything involving ABB and the flag, it did NOT go through them as they would never approve it. Any piece of merch or tour flyer with the rebel flag and the ABB did not go through the band. Derek Trucks said his uncle Butch said they actually thought less of Skynyrd for using it.
Well said!
That was a scary guitar indeed I can hear the tension in your voice throughout the video
Is it scary because it has a magical power over you to make you afraid? Or are you scaring yourself?
