@@cavscott8841 We kind of know where it comes from. I remember some claiming a diversity angle with full-ride sponsorship being the reason for his early success. They forget that he did not have a sponsor for F3. He was dropped my Mclaren and had to re-earn his sponsor. What a knife edge rise he had. On the other hand, we have Max currently, who has 3 WDC. One absolutely questionable. The other two with supremely dominant cars with competitors 0.5 secs/lap slower. AND an absolutely SOFT (nicest possible description) teammate. PLUS, Max grew up wealthy with a F1 driver for a father
As a Finn, who was 10 years old at the time of this season, I have some very fond memories of it. One of the first full seasons I followed. The privilege of seeing my countryman win the WDC and also (looking back) seeing one of the greatest rookie seasons ever, it really doesn't get much better than that. Hoping to see Lewis surpass Michael's WDC record still, let's hope he becomes the first Ferrari WDC since Kimi.
I was a big Kimi fan when he was at McLaren, he was everything you’d see in a world champion, but it never happened for him there, and a gut punch to see him do it for Ferrari but he most definitely deserved that championship

Formula 1 came to my home town of Detroit in 1982. The most intriguing driver I saw on an off the track was Keke Rosberg who smoked Marlboro's and drank beer right in the paddock!! He won the championship that year in a similar way as Raikkonen: in the last race from behind!! Talk about gangsta!!! 😅😅😅 Finns know how to rock!!

Losing the championship the way he did would’ve broken most drivers. But 7 championships later and some insanely difficult years like 2008, 2012, 2016 and the shambolic AD2021 made Lewis one of the most mentally strong individuals in the history of this sport.
Tbf with AD2021 only a scummy person would look at that and think "oh yeah _it_ won that not Lewis" Lewis knows, well at least I hope he does ; anyone with basic morality knows how much of a screwjob AD2021 was and how it ruined the sport.
I personally don't buy into the arguments against Lewis Hamilton being the best to do it on account of purely being in the fastest car. The fact is that across the history of the sport, the best drivers have had the advantages of being in the strongest cars. But the fact that Lewis could walk into the sport and handle the pressure of a top team's expectations and live up to that for virtually his entire career is a testament to his strength and consistency.
Don't know if you're a new fan but LH was always Ron Dennis proteje, since 1995 Autosport Awards he told he was going to drive for Mclaren one day. His debut at Mclaren came as no surprise for no one, so LH fit that role perfectly. I put a comment out regarding LH testing the car compared to Alonso, to put a contrast to why he was so much faster in the car , even if it was his debut and it was against a double WC.

Not to mention, if the difference between Hamilton and Alonso was testing time, then Alonso would have started to perform better than Hamilton as the season progressed, yet the opposite happened. And being signed by McLaren at such a young age is a testament of Lewis's talent, not to mention he didn't just walk into McLaren; he had to win everything up till GP2 with dominating performances to be considered a possible driver in F1.

As talented as Lewis is, he was the most prepared Rookie of all time he had years of unlimited testing he had more experience in driving Mclarens than Alonso did, its not like how Rookies enter the sport today. He has had the most succesful career because he has spent more time in front running championship contending cars than any driver in F1 History apart 09,2011,2013 and now 22,23,24 he has had championship callenging cars.
I remember it being the opening race of the season. 1989 for example, when Nigel Mansell won on his debut for Ferrari. Australia was always the last race of the season for a long time. At Adelaide as well.

Before that it was usually the second or third race of the season (and even the opener in 1995). Then it was the last round of the season in 2006-'08 and 2011-'13. It's a great venue for a final round, don't get me wrong, and I'd rather the final round was held there rather than in Abu Dhabi, but it's not held that slot as often as people think.

Max and Lewis were both hyped as the next big thing even before they had an F1 drive, Max was given a year and a bit to learn the craft at Torro Rosso, then won on his debut with Red Bull.....but Lewis was thrown into the deep end and came out flying.
It's all about temperament. Max was a hot head and didn't have enough time driving single seaters. Lewis had done all the categories before F1 and accumulated a truly matured race craft. I mean the way he destroyed massa and Raikkonen in malaysia while driving a slower fuel heavy car was insane.

As Häkkinen left for his sabbatical, I kept rooting for McLaren. I remember hearing about Hamilton and I had no idea who he was. I did research a bit, and well that's it. Then Australia came around and I was a fan after the first corner. Crazy to think what a journery this was to end up eventually in a Ferrari.

It's quite funny because years from now when Max has double the championships and Lewis is retired, the making of Max's legendary career will be intricately linked to another legend in Lewis Hamilton and it will go both ways. Lewis and Max inadvertently cemented each others greatness in 2021 and hindsight will make that evermore clear. Now the next legend on the way is Kimi and just like how Max had to spend a couple seasons under Lewis' shadow, yet always prowling, waiting for the opportunity to mount a championship challenge, Kimi may have do a bit of prowling himself in Max's shadow until there's finally a dip in form in the Redbull-Max Verstappen duo.
I don't think Max will have that many championships. I think as soon as the red Bull becomes uncompetitive he'll retire to do something else. I don't think he's the type to stay that long after all success just to drive a dog

He was lucky as in he started in a race winning car plus back then testing was pretty much unlimited. in 2007 Alonso didnt even do the pre season testing, Lewis did the testing so he actually had a small advantage in knowing the car. After Hungary lets be honest the whole team was behind Lewis, Fernando had no support. Even if you look at 96 season Villenueve competed for the championship as a rookie bcoz he got put straight in a race winning car then like Lewis won it in his 2nd season. Its only seen as great because most rookies never get that chance, but imagine Leclerc joined Ferrari in 2018 straight away he would of been a title contender judging by how much fast he was than Sebastian.

On that Race in 2006 (in Turkey IIRC) where he went from 18th to 2nd, pretty much all F1 staff that where at the track that day stopped what they where doing to watch the race once this kid started climbing positions, I've heard several accounts of this from back in the day... so people knew they where watching something special that day.
I’m no huge Lewis fan but no one can deny the impact he has had on the sport. He’s literally the face of the sport, even non-fans of the sport and those who have literally no idea about f1 can name him. Yesterday’s news was on practically every front page, I don’t know of any other current driver that would cause such a media frenzy
Max would undoubtedly be the one who comes 2nd, but even then, the media coverage wouldn't even be a tenth of what it's been with Lewis. Even while being arguably the greatest driver of all time, what he's definitely been the best at is marketing. No driver has ever come close to Lewis, when it comes to associating themselves with mainstream brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, which he brought to Mercedes as a sponsor.

I only see him on the news when either referenced against someone else, or when it is made explicit this is some F1 man. If I asked my mum to name F1 drivers it would go Schumacher, Hamilton, Jackie Stewart, Lauda, Prost and Nigel Mansell.

Brilliant video! I don't know now if I realised this at the time but this has made me take a step back and appreciate just what an achievement this was. Absolutely astonishing really. The way he used to make those grooved tyre cars dance was something to behold. Two moments stick in my mind. The first being some footage I saw of him going through one of the fast chicanes in Magny Cours with the back end floating the whole time, it was stunning. The second was when he threw it down the inside of Raikkonen in Monza. He'd braked so late he had to throw the car sideways to get it turned in time. I think the delacacy of the Pirelli tyres, and the prescribed driving style they demand, have robbed us of some of this Hamilton magic over the following years
F3 cars, GP2 cars or f1 cars Lewis showed immediatly his talent and impressed the the world of f1. His racecraft was legendary too. Hamilton made a legendary overtake each seasons in 3 different category - Overtake Sutil on the outside on eau rouge in F3 - Double overtake in silverstone GP2 - First corner and overtake Kubica and the reigning champion Alonso Anyway just another example of Lewis being something special. A talent once each century something like a new Jim Clark as the legend Stirling Moss himself said it
the craziest rookie season ever... Said by a german, die hard MS fan. I've seen Lewis race live on track several times back in the day. Always reminded me of Senna, taking lines that no one else would take to find grip where no one thought any grip was. I remember sitting at the final corner at the Nurburgring GP, lewis would have a slightly wider entry to that corner than every other driver cause i guess he felt there was just a bit more grip.
Love him or hate him you cannot deny the absolute natural talent of the guy. It was a stunning debut season, and set the tone for much of his career so far.

Natural talent is seen in young age, everything later is a combination of talent and hard work. Filtering out how much of the performance is natural talent when a driver is already in F1, is basically impossible.

Those Chinese GP and Brazil GP moments still pains me even to this day. One of those I still remeber where i was. Even though I'd been watching F1 since 2004 but this was the year I really got it and why I'm still a massive hamiliton fan

Unfortunately, that same level of respect is still given to the F2 and F3 races to this day. I was at Silverstone this weekend. The F1 race was brilliant,but also the second best race of the weekend. The F2 feature race was another level beyond it.
Man this was so well done, your tribute film for when that sad day comes when Lewis leaves the grid is going to be special and I’ll possibly get a little emotional watching it.
Oh man, I remember that season vividly. I've been an F1 fan literally my entire life, my dad got me into it. But back then, the coverage we got was nowhere near what it is today. We were happy to see Qualy live, nevermind practices, or junior categories. Also, it was virtually unheard of for leading teams to take on rookies, and Mclaren was easily a top 3 team. So I was surprised as hell when I learned that they will be running a rookie in 2007. Didin't know anything about Hamilton until then, didn't know he was a GP2 winner, that he was a huge talent and a prized prospect, didn't even know that he will be the first black driver ever. I was, and still am, a Ferrari and Schumi fan, so I was devastated that he was leaving and was pissed that Raikkonen was supposed to replace the Greatest Ever. But race 1 in Australia, back then it would start at like 5 AM where I am, I saw that Lewis was different. Very little was expected of rookies back then, it was not as it is today. And he immediately showed that he not only belonged, he was going to be a problem. To date, best rookie I have EVER seen in my 20+ years following the sport. The kid was a sensation, who went toe to toe with Alonso and Raikkonen, till the very last race of the season. It was crazy to witness that.
I remember watching that GP2 Sprint Race at Istanbul on TV. I was enthralled by the relentlessness of Hamilton's charge through the field. He demonstrated his feel for the brakes that would become a trait in his early F1 career, last of the late brakers if you will. Andi Zuber won that race, but much like Jean-Pierre Jabouille at Dijon in 1979, most eyes were behind him. Hamilton was punching the air in elation at his epic drive, rightly so. I said to myself after this race, even if he doesn't win the GP2 title this year, he's bound to have proved himself to those in F1 to give him a seat for 2007. As we know, he did get to F1 in 2007, but I think many were surprised with who he would make his debut with, Mclaren. When I see disrespectful comments saying things like "oh he's always had a front running car, at least capable of winning races," they fail to see the fact that it was by no means guaranteed to happen going into 2007. After all, the year before, McLaren had their first winless season since 1996 and the car they were using for 2007, the MP4-22, was a gentle evolution to the unsuccessful MP4-21 from 2006 and had more than a passing resemblance. Putting it simply, love him or hate him, it's up to the driver to make best use of the equipment at their disposal and for Lewis Hamilton to (on countback) finish runner up in the world championship in his debut season in F1 is mightily impressive
@Mazname he didn't try to kill anyone (not literally anyway). He won 5 times in GP2 and although there were times when he had either bad luck (like being taken out by his team mate in Barcelona) simply not having the pace (Hungaroring Feature race where he started last and finished 10th, which didn't score any points at the time). Some of his performances featured truly jaw dropping driving (such as the Silverstone Sprint where he passed Nelson Piquet Junior and Clivio Piccione three wide into Maggots and pulled it off, and his epic charge to second in that aforementioned Istanbul race, passing cars left and right)
People give Lewis alot of hate for being in the McLaren as a rookie and never having a bad car (only 2023 had the car he driven not got a win at some point during the season) but they forget he proved in 2007 why he should be in that seat, I dont think many other drivers would be able to go toe to roe with a reigning 2 time champion and technically beag them as a rookie. It is like if Piastri or Sargeant last year were in the RB and equalled the points of Verstappen, it isnt going to happen. I dont think any rookie from the last 15 years, if put in Lewis' situation would have done as well as him. And if you love him or hate you have admit he is a quick driver and deserved to be in a top team from the beginning of his career.
This season was crazy. It was basically the 23 season but instead of 2 rbs there were 4 (as Ferrari and McLaren were outright the two best teams). I remember rooting for Hamilton so much this season. I loved the way he carried himself and was humble and had the shy quiet like persona. There sadly will never be another rookie season like Hamilton unless antonelli gets the merc seat next year and they miraculously get way better.
In 2023 Lewis was saved by a string of safety cars and very poor Ferrari strategy. So no Ferrari weren't a great team in 2023. In 2024 there's hardly any safety cars and Lewis is doing badly despite the best car on two occasions and those inherited wins from is faster team mate.

I have never been a fan of Hamilton. Just because I’ve always been a Ferrari fan. From the first season I knew how bloody good he was. Before Mercedes domination it felt wierd that he hadn’t won more titles. I was bored to death 2014-2020. I was celebrating every non Mercedes win. However, now when Max is dominating crazyer than ever, suprisingly, I was starting to get worried. Is that it from Hamilton? After news from couple of days ago I’ve been buzzing with excitement. I would be happy seeing Ham fighting for the wins and championships for Ferrari. This was needed move for F1. Im hoping for more equal championship like 07,08,09 and 10 was.
I happened to turn Eurosport on at the moment of Lewis's spin. Because of my kids, I hadn't had much chance to watch as much motorsports as I had before they turned up. He caught my attention immediately, and I was so into that race that when my hubby walked into the room and asked what I was watching, I said, "A future F1 world champion." I have only done this once since. At Spa, 2014. I had just watched Max win his third race of the weekend. Lewis was clearly going to be something special, and he absolutely lived up to the hype. I'm sad he's going to Ferrari, because it's never usually a good move to make when not long before retirement.
Nice to see some actual positivity attached to Lewis. He is just simply a wonderful driver and a wonderful human being. The amount of hate he gets, is horrible but I guess it's almost a testament to how terribly backwards the world is becoming. One of the greats and I think as the years go on he will be appreciated more and more. Lets be honest here, Lewis could arguably have at least 4 more titles to his name.

Been a fan of Lewis since his debut...never a dull moment with him... from missing out on one point in his debut season to winning like he did the following season to the shambolic 2021 season and of course the season Rosberg won when Hamilton was plagued with mechanical problems and bad luck all through that season... credit where it's due, he has been entertaining to watch throughout his career that's for sure!!

No matter how you put it, missing the WDC by just a single point in your rookie season is absolutely monumental. You don't achieve something like that by chance. Still, it's going to be weird to see Hamilton in a red suit. I wish him (and Ferrari) all the best. They're both going to need it if they want to take the fight to Red Bull.

To think Hamilton has won 7 titles, the most of anyone. And then you could even say he was incredibly unlucky to not win 2007 (last 2 races), 2016 (totally one-sided reliability issues compared to teammate) and 2021 (Abu Dhabi... need I say more). He also came very close in 2010 with the 3rd fastest car, while incredible bad luck, reliability and pit stops prevented him from mounting a challenge in 2012, when he was on absolute top form. The man could have had 12 titles! And this is with varying levels of car performance, and against multiple world champions (Alonso, Vettel, Button, Raikkonen, Rosberg, Verstappen). The fact that people doubt his ability is laughable and like most great drivers, we'll only appreciate how great they were once they're gone.
Given the recent news of Hamilton's team switch, I'd say you have perfect material for a follow up video. Especially given recent ferrari vs mercedes rivalries that red bull has overshadowed and caused people to forget about.

I didn't watch GP2 (or know what it was) in those days, so Australia 2007 was my introduction to Lewis Hamilton. Before _that_ Turn 1, ITV showed some highlights of qualifying (IIRC) and there was a shot of him exiting the T11-12 high-speed chicane with a dab of oppo on the kerb. It looked totally effortless to gather it up and carry on as normal. I thought "he drives a real-life F1 car the way I can drive on a game!" and decided he was cool. Over that season I became a full-blown fan. I still own the 2008 'rocket red' World Champions merch shirt the like of which would cost an absolute fortune nowadays. Through the mid-2010s when he was winning for a hobby and getting 'a bit Hollywood' it became easy to grow tired of him... but more recently, watching him resist more and more unpleasant detractors as he stands by his values - and still puts in performances to remind people why he _always_ mattered as a driver - I'm a fan all over again. I don't know how 2025-6 will go, but if he can't get a Ferrari driver's title then probably no-one can in this era. I wish him the very best.

To those who say “[this driver] only wins championships with the fastest car” are…right. Typically, if a team builds a fast car faster than their respective counterparts, they have a good chance of winning the championship. However, Lewis Hamilton and the pressures of not only having to drive well, but having to do consistently well amongst the doubters and the racists of the sport back then has proven that he has the drive and, most importantly, the character to be consistent and win 7 driver world championships. I love this style of video you do Josh :) I was never really a Hamilton fan I was Massa until he retired and then vettel and my favourite at the moment is riccardo. But seeing all of this and the background behind some of the moments we all know i find fascinating:)
Wonderful video and brings back memories. I remember looking at that season with a lot of expectation. First season without Schumi in a Ferrari in what would ultimately be the last hurrah by a team that had dominated the sport years earlier. Also, the preseason noises where very positive and it seemed like McLaren finally had it's act together after years of uncertainty: the dreadful start of the 2004 campaign with the Mp4-18 car stillborn and it's influence on the 19 still hanging over them, and McLaren and mostly MB getting the first version of the V8 wrong at the start of 2006 and being kind of unimpressive. But the noises from testing where good in 2007, Fernando was happy drifting Mercs in press events in Spain, PDLR stated things along the lines of "I was wishing for the seat but the test Lewis made was so impressive there wasn't really much of a choice to make anyways" and mister Ronsspeak stating things along the lines of "we have Fernando, so we can gamble on Lewis and let him be a rookie", even the switch from Michelins to Bridgestone of the Woking team was going in the right direction. I remember how insane it was, and how... strange Fernando looked at times in the "happy period" of the McLaren marriage, you could tell something was off but initially I missed that was him not dealing with what was happening on the other side of the garage. While I have huge respect for Sir Lewis and would say I'm a fan, during this early period, he lost me because of the insincerity of his statements sometimes. He was obviously still very much coached by the Ron Dennis school so he gave these very PR friendly statements, but his actions usually immediately contradicted what he said, and at this point I was more of an Alonso fan so usually sided with him (also, since I consumed a lot of British motorsport media, the bias was usually unbearable at times...but I didn't go out of the way to balance it out and read Spanish media, which sometimes said absolutely unacceptable things on Lewis). As Lewis gained confidence and his voice for media, I mostly liked him...though he still sometimes did stupid shit (that beef with Button over JB "unfollowing" him in twitter and the airing of confidential telemetry data in said platform after a practice/qualy didn't go LH's way). In any case I was more of a Raikkonen fan than a McLaren fan and was overjoyed when he won that year's championship, felt right after McLaren gave him such an unreliable car for 2003-2005. I still remember watching that race live (thank you timezones) in my parent's living room, my mom and dad in frame to the left in the couch and me seeing LH's McLaren crawling, me screaming at the TV while the commentators where just picking that up, not believing that Kimi might just damn well pull it off.

Kimi needed a drivers title though. It would’ve been more poetic if theirs were swapped, but the better driver won in each season. Kimi had more wins in ‘07
@@Fractured_Unity Kimi (in my biased opinion) deserved the title the most in 2005 but his car let him down in what felt like every third race. I celebrated like crazy when he did win it in 2007 but Hamilton's achievement back then was massive, and I'm glad he'll go down as one of the GOATs of the sport.
2007 might had been surrounded by controversy, not just sopygate, but a lot of it related to how the team treated him over Alonso to the point that even the FIA had to step in to ensure fairness, but let's be honest, we had Piastri last year, and he was nonwhere as competitive as Lewis was from day one, that will remain a fact forever
If anything it was Ron Dennis and the inverstors fault, since they where the ones who wanted Mclaren to prio Hamilton no matter what, the mechanics didn't
Also consider the fact that alonso was black mailing ron dennis over the ferrari documents, which definitely would effect his judgment over which driver he preferred in strategic matters.
I tried to find information on this and could find nothing. He won the previous year why would they spend so much money on him to sideline him? If he was so unfairly treated how come he did so well and came 3rd. I could point to every car on the grid espcially redbull over the last decade and the giant gulf between Attention to No.1 and No.2 drivers. Not to mention this would be the only time in F1 history where the No.2 was prioritised over the No.1 for an entire season. Again can you give me a source for this and not they opened an investigation, I want to know that they found that Alonso was being so unfairly treated.

I'm new to F1 and majority say he's good just because of the car, and almost every post related to Hamilton has a lot of hate in the comments towards him, it almost made me think he's not that good. They forget that he did not have a sponsor for F3. He was dropped my Mclaren and had to re-earn his sponsor. What a knife edge rise he had.

As a Finn, who was 10 years old at the time of this season, I have some very fond memories of it. One of the first full seasons I followed. The privilege of seeing my countryman win the WDC and also (looking back) seeing one of the greatest rookie seasons ever, it really doesn't get much better than that. Hoping to see Lewis surpass Michael's WDC record still, let's hope he becomes the first Ferrari WDC since Kimi.

I personally don't buy into the arguments against Lewis Hamilton being the best to do it on account of purely being in the fastest car. The fact is that across the history of the sport, the best drivers have had the advantages of being in the strongest cars. But the fact that Lewis could walk into the sport and handle the pressure of a top team's expectations and live up to that for virtually his entire career is a testament to his strength and consistency.

Don't know if you're a new fan but LH was always Ron Dennis proteje, since 1995 Autosport Awards he told he was going to drive for Mclaren one day. His debut at Mclaren came as no surprise for no one, so LH fit that role perfectly. I put a comment out regarding LH testing the car compared to Alonso, to put a contrast to why he was so much faster in the car , even if it was his debut and it was against a double WC.

Not to mention, if the difference between Hamilton and Alonso was testing time, then Alonso would have started to perform better than Hamilton as the season progressed, yet the opposite happened. And being signed by McLaren at such a young age is a testament of Lewis's talent, not to mention he didn't just walk into McLaren; he had to win everything up till GP2 with dominating performances to be considered a possible driver in F1.

As talented as Lewis is, he was the most prepared Rookie of all time he had years of unlimited testing he had more experience in driving Mclarens than Alonso did, its not like how Rookies enter the sport today. He has had the most succesful career because he has spent more time in front running championship contending cars than any driver in F1 History apart 09,2011,2013 and now 22,23,24 he has had championship callenging cars.

Before that it was usually the second or third race of the season (and even the opener in 1995). Then it was the last round of the season in 2006-'08 and 2011-'13. It's a great venue for a final round, don't get me wrong, and I'd rather the final round was held there rather than in Abu Dhabi, but it's not held that slot as often as people think.

Max and Lewis were both hyped as the next big thing even before they had an F1 drive, Max was given a year and a bit to learn the craft at Torro Rosso, then won on his debut with Red Bull.....but Lewis was thrown into the deep end and came out flying.
That’s a good point. Max would have thoroughly embarrassed himself if he had a title contending car in 2015-2018. But then, he was 4 years younger.
It's all about temperament. Max was a hot head and didn't have enough time driving single seaters. Lewis had done all the categories before F1 and accumulated a truly matured race craft. I mean the way he destroyed massa and Raikkonen in malaysia while driving a slower fuel heavy car was insane.

It's quite funny because years from now when Max has double the championships and Lewis is retired, the making of Max's legendary career will be intricately linked to another legend in Lewis Hamilton and it will go both ways. Lewis and Max inadvertently cemented each others greatness in 2021 and hindsight will make that evermore clear.
Now the next legend on the way is Kimi and just like how Max had to spend a couple seasons under Lewis' shadow, yet always prowling, waiting for the opportunity to mount a championship challenge, Kimi may have do a bit of prowling himself in Max's shadow until there's finally a dip in form in the Redbull-Max Verstappen duo.
I don't think Max will have that many championships. I think as soon as the red Bull becomes uncompetitive he'll retire to do something else. I don't think he's the type to stay that long after all success just to drive a dog

He was lucky as in he started in a race winning car plus back then testing was pretty much unlimited. in 2007 Alonso didnt even do the pre season testing, Lewis did the testing so he actually had a small advantage in knowing the car. After Hungary lets be honest the whole team was behind Lewis, Fernando had no support. Even if you look at 96 season Villenueve competed for the championship as a rookie bcoz he got put straight in a race winning car then like Lewis won it in his 2nd season. Its only seen as great because most rookies never get that chance, but imagine Leclerc joined Ferrari in 2018 straight away he would of been a title contender judging by how much fast he was than Sebastian.

On that Race in 2006 (in Turkey IIRC) where he went from 18th to 2nd, pretty much all F1 staff that where at the track that day stopped what they where doing to watch the race once this kid started climbing positions, I've heard several accounts of this from back in the day... so people knew they where watching something special that day.
Karyn chandok reminded people of that last year too. He said everyone in the garages stopped what they were doing and watched.
I’m no huge Lewis fan but no one can deny the impact he has had on the sport. He’s literally the face of the sport, even non-fans of the sport and those who have literally no idea about f1 can name him. Yesterday’s news was on practically every front page, I don’t know of any other current driver that would cause such a media frenzy
Max would undoubtedly be the one who comes 2nd, but even then, the media coverage wouldn't even be a tenth of what it's been with Lewis. Even while being arguably the greatest driver of all time, what he's definitely been the best at is marketing. No driver has ever come close to Lewis, when it comes to associating themselves with mainstream brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, which he brought to Mercedes as a sponsor.

I only see him on the news when either referenced against someone else, or when it is made explicit this is some F1 man. I don't know now if I realised this at the time but this has made me take a step back and appreciate just what an achievement this was. Absolutely astonishing really. The way he used to make those grooved tyre cars dance was something to behold. Two moments stick in my mind. The first being some footage I saw of him going through one of the fast chicanes in Magny Cours with the back end floating the whole time, it was stunning. The second was when he threw it down the inside of Raikkonen in Monza. He'd braked so late he had to throw the car sideways to get it turned in time. I think the delacacy of the Pirelli tyres, and the prescribed driving style they demand, have robbed us of some of this Hamilton magic over the following years

His racecraft was legendary too.
Hamilton made a legendary overtake each seasons in 3 different category
- Overtake Sutil on the outside on eau rouge in F3
- Double overtake in silverstone GP2
- First corner and overtake Kubica and the reigning champion Alonso
Anyway just another example of Lewis being something special. A talent once each century something like a new Jim Clark as the legend Stirling Moss himself said it

the craziest rookie season ever... Said by a german, die hard MS fan. I've seen Lewis race live on track several times back in the day. Always reminded me of Senna, taking lines that no one else would take to find grip where no one thought any grip was. I remember sitting at the final corner at the Nurburgring GP, lewis would have a slightly wider entry to that corner than every other driver cause i guess he felt there was just a bit more grip.
Love him or hate him you cannot deny the absolute natural talent of the guy. It was a stunning debut season, and set the tone for much of his career so far.

@@Fredhamleclerc Even if he said so, what is the unit for natural talent? It is not measurable in any way or form. It is merely an opinion. Same category as the GOAT debate and therefore meaningless. Natural talent is seen in young age, everything later is a combination of talent and hard work. Filtering out how much of the performance is natural talent when a driver is already in F1, is basically impossible.
@kevinprengemann7456 I mean I agree on the fact that there must be drivers even more talented than lewis, but they weren't driven enough or lacked sponsorship when they needed it but definitely we can see if someone has some innate talent with the way their teammate talk about them...rosberg has been always of the opinion that lewis just was able to extract 2 tens more than despite the fact that rosberg tried his hardest had the most state of the art equipment being a wdc's son....that x factor surely helps people to be successful in this sport

I was at Silverstone this weekend. The F1 race was brilliant,but also the second best race of the weekend. The F2 feature race was another level beyond it.

Oh man, I remember that season vividly. I've been an F1 fan literally my entire life, my dad got me into it. But back then, the coverage we got was nowhere near what it is today. We were happy to see Qualy live, nevermind practices, or junior categories. Also, it was virtually unheard of for leading teams to take on rookies, and Mclaren was easily a top 3 team. So I was surprised as hell when I learned that they will be running a rookie in 2007. Didin't know anything about Hamilton until then, didn't know he was a GP2 winner, that he was a huge talent and a prized prospect, didn't even know that he will be the first black driver ever. I was, and still am, a Ferrari and Schumi fan, so I was devastated that he was leaving and was pissed that Raikkonen was supposed to replace the Greatest Ever. But race 1 in Australia, back then it would start at like 5 AM where I am, I saw that Lewis was different. Very little was expected of rookies back then, it was not as it is today. And he immediately showed that he not only belonged, he was going to be a problem. To date, best rookie I have EVER seen in my 20+ years following the sport. The kid was a sensation, who went toe to toe with Alonso and Raikkonen, till the very last race of the season. It was crazy to witness that.

Josh: lets talk about Lewis' first F1 season in 2007
I remember watching that GP2 Sprint Race at Istanbul on TV. I was enthralled by the relentlessness of Hamilton's charge through the field. He demonstrated his feel for the brakes that would become a trait in his early F1 career, last of the late brakers if you will. Andi Zuber won that race, but much like Jean-Pierre Jabouille at Dijon in 1979, most eyes were behind him. Hamilton was punching the air in elation at his epic drive, rightly so. I said to myself after this race, even if he doesn't win the GP2 title this year, he's bound to have proved himself to those in F1 to give him a seat for 2007.
As we know, he did get to F1 in 2007, but I think many were surprised with who he would make his debut with, Mclaren.
When I see disrespectful comments saying things like "oh he's always had a front running car, at least capable of winning races," they fail to see the fact that it was by no means guaranteed to happen going into 2007. After all, the year before, McLaren had their first winless season since 1996 and the car they were using for 2007, the MP4-22, was a gentle evolution to the unsuccessful MP4-21 from 2006 and had more than a passing resemblance.
Putting it simply, love him or hate him, it's up to the driver to make best use of the equipment at their disposal and for Lewis Hamilton to (on countback) finish runner up in the world championship in his debut season in F1 is mightily impressive

@Mazname he didn't try to kill anyone (not literally anyway). He won 5 times in GP2 and although there were times when he had either bad luck (like being taken out by his team mate in Barcelona) simply not having the pace (Hungaroring Feature race where he started last and finished 10th, which didn't score any points at the time). Some of his performances featured truly jaw dropping driving (such as the Silverstone Sprint where he passed Nelson Piquet Junior and Clivio Piccione three wide into Maggots and pulled it off, and his epic charge to second in that aforementioned Istanbul race, passing cars left and right)
People give Lewis alot of hate for being in the McLaren as a rookie and never having a bad car (only 2023 had the car he driven not got a win at some point during the season) but they forget he proved in 2007 why he should be in that seat, I dont think many other drivers would be able to go toe to roe with a reigning 2 time champion and technically beag them as a rookie. It is like if Piastri or Sargeant last year were in the RB and equalled the points of Verstappen, it isnt going to happen. I dont think any rookie from the last 15 years, if put in Lewis' situation would have done as well as him. And if you love him or hate you have admit he is a quick driver and deserved to be in a top team from the beginning of his career.

This season was crazy. It was basically the 23 season but instead of 2 rbs there were 4 (as Ferrari and McLaren were outright the two best teams).
I remember rooting for Hamilton so much this season. I loved the way he carried himself and was humble and had the shy quiet like persona.
There sadly will never be another rookie season like Hamilton unless antonelli gets the merc seat next year and they miraculously get way better.
In 2023 Lewis was saved by a string of safety cars and very poor Ferrari strategy. So no Ferrari weren't a great team in 2023. In 2024 there's hardly any safety cars and Lewis is doing badly despite the best car on two occasions and those inherited wins from is faster team mate.

I was v fortunate to be an intern inside the MTC that summer (for McLaren Electronic Systems, not the race team) and it was an incredible place and time to be there. I remember Ron's all hands meeting in the restaurant when spygate came out.

I have never been a fan of Hamilton. Just because I’ve always been a Ferrari fan. From the first season I knew how bloody good he was. Before Mercedes domination it felt wierd that he hadn’t won more titles. I was bored to death 2014-2020. I was celebrating every non Mercedes win. However, now when Max is dominating crazyer than ever, suprisingly, I was starting to get worried. Is that it from Hamilton? After news from couple of days ago I’ve been buzzing with excitement. I would be happy seeing Ham fighting for the wins and championships for Ferrari. This was needed move for F1. Im hoping for more equal championship like 07,08,09 and 10 was.
We will see if he still have the championship in him in 2025 and onwards, but he is already ahead of Russell in this years championship

I happened to turn Eurosport on at the moment of Lewis's spin. Because of my kids, I hadn't had much chance to watch as much motorsports as I had before they turned up. He caught my attention immediately, and I was so into that race that when my hubby walked into the room and asked what I was watching, I said, "A future F1 world champion."
I have only done this once since. At Spa, 2014. I had just watched Max win his third race of the weekend.
Lewis was clearly going to be something special, and he absolutely lived up to the hype. I'm sad he's going to Ferrari, because it's never usually a good move to make when not long before retirement.

Nice to see some actual positivity attached to Lewis. He is just simply a wonderful driver and a wonderful human being. The amount of hate he gets, is horrible but I guess it's almost a testament to how terribly backwards the world is becoming. One of the greats and I think as the years go on he will be appreciated more and more. Lets be honest here, Lewis could arguably have at least 4 more titles to his name.
He gets hate because of what he believes in and stands for.. people are bigots so they hate him for using his platform for change.

Been a fan of Lewis since his debut...never a dull moment with him... from missing out on one point in his debut season to winning like he did the following season to the shambolic 2021 season and of course the season Rosberg won when Hamilton was plagued with mechanical problems and bad luck all through that season... credit where it's due, he has been entertaining to watch throughout his career that's for sure!!

No matter how you put it, missing the WDC by just a single point in your rookie season is absolutely monumental. You don't achieve something like that by chance.

To think Hamilton has won 7 titles, the most of anyone. And then you could even say he was incredibly unlucky to not win 2007 (last 2 races), 2016 (totally one-sided reliability issues compared to teammate) and 2021 (Abu Dhabi... need I say more). He also came very close in 2010 with the 3rd fastest car, while incredible bad luck, reliability and pit stops prevented him from mounting a challenge in 2012, when he was on absolute top form.
The man could have had 12 titles! And this is with varying levels of car performance, and against multiple world champions (Alonso, Vettel, Button, Raikkonen, Rosberg, Verstappen). The fact that people doubt his ability is laughable and like most great drivers, we'll only appreciate how great they were once they're gone.
Given the recent news of Hamilton's team switch, I'd say you have perfect material for a follow up video. Especially given recent ferrari vs mercedes rivalries that red bull has overshadowed and caused people to forget about.

I didn't watch GP2 (or know what it was) in those days, so Australia 2007 was my introduction to Lewis Hamilton. Before _that_ Turn 1, ITV showed some highlights of qualifying (IIRC) and there was a shot of him exiting the T11-12 high-speed chicane with a dab of oppo on the kerb. It looked totally effortless to gather it up and carry on as normal. I thought "he drives a real-life F1 car the way I can drive on a game!" and decided he was cool. Over that season I became a full-blown fan. I still own the 2008 'rocket red' World Champions merch shirt the like of which would cost an absolute fortune nowadays.
Through the mid-2010s when he was winning for a hobby and getting 'a bit Hollywood' it became easy to grow tired of him... but more recently, watching him resist more and more unpleasant detractors as he stands by his values - and still puts in performances to remind people why he _always_ mattered as a driver - I'm a fan all over again. I don't know how 2025-6 will go, but if he can't get a Ferrari driver's title then probably no-one can in this era. I wish him the very best.

To those who say “[this driver] only wins championships with the fastest car” are…right. Typically, if a team builds a fast car faster than their respective counterparts, they have a good chance of winning the championship.
However, Lewis Hamilton and the pressures of not only having to drive well, but having to do consistently well amongst the doubters and the racists of the sport back then has proven that he has the drive and, most importantly, the character to be consistent and win 7 driver world championships. Championships aren’t given. They’re earned and thanks Josh for the video proving that Lewis could race amongst the best in the world.

I love this style of video you do Josh :) I was never really a Hamilton fan I was Massa until he retired and then vettel and my favourite at the moment is riccardo.
But seeing all of this and the background behind some of the moments we all know i find fascinating:)
Wonderful video and brings back memories. I remember looking at that season with a lot of expectation. First season without Schumi in a Ferrari in what would ultimately be the last hurrah by a team that had dominated the sport years earlier. Also, the preseason noises where very positive and it seemed like McLaren finally had it's act together after years of uncertainty: the dreadful start of the 2004 campaign with the Mp4-18 car stillborn and it's influence on the 19 still hanging over them, and McLaren and mostly MB getting the first version of the V8 wrong at the start of 2006 and being kind of unimpressive. But the noises from testing where good in 2007, Fernando was happy drifting Mercs in press events in Spain, PDLR stated things along the lines of "I was wishing for the seat but the test Lewis made was so impressive there wasn't really much of a choice to make anyways" and mister Ronsspeak stating things along the lines of "we have Fernando, so we can gamble on Lewis and let him be a rookie", even the switch from Michelins to Bridgestone of the Woking team was going in the right direction.
I remember how insane it was, and how... strange Fernando looked at times in the "happy period" of the McLaren marriage, you could tell something was off but initially I missed that was him not dealing with what was happening on the other side of the garage. While I have huge respect for Sir Lewis and would say I'm a fan, during this early period, he lost me because of the insincerity of his statements sometimes. He was obviously still very much coached by the Ron Dennis school so he gave these very PR friendly statements, but his actions usually immediately contradicted what he said, and at this point I was more of an Alonso fan so usually sided with him (also, since I consumed a lot of British motorsport media, the bias was usually unbearable at times...but I didn't go out of the way to balance it out and read Spanish media, which sometimes said absolutely unacceptable things on Lewis). As Lewis gained confidence and his voice for media, I mostly liked him...though he still sometimes did stupid shit (that beef with Button over JB "unfollowing" him in twitter and the airing of confidential telemetry data in said platform after a practice/qualy didn't go LH's way).
In any case I was more of a Raikkonen fan than a McLaren fan and was overjoyed when he won that year's championship, felt right after McLaren gave him such an unreliable car for 2003-2005. I still remember watching that race live (thank you timezones) in my parent's living room, my mom and dad in frame to the left in the couch and me seeing LH's McLaren crawling, me screaming at the TV while the commentators where just picking that up, not believing that Kimi might just damn well pull it off.

Kimi needed a drivers title though. It would’ve been more poetic if theirs were swapped, but the better driver won in each season. Kimi had more wins in ‘07
@@Fractured_Unity Kimi (in my biased opinion) deserved the title the most in 2005 but his car let him down in what felt like every third race. I celebrated like crazy when he did win it in 2007 but Hamilton's achievement back then was massive, and I'm glad he'll go down as one of the GOATs of the sport.

2007 might had been surrounded by controversy, not just sopygate, but a lot of it related to how the team treated him over Alonso to the point that even the FIA had to step in to ensure fairness, but let's be honest, we had Piastri last year, and he was nonwhere as competitive as Lewis was from day one, that will remain a fact forever
If anything it was Ron Dennis and the inverstors fault, since they where the ones who wanted Mclaren to prio Hamilton no matter what, the mechanics didn't
Also consider the fact that alonso was black mailing ron dennis over the ferrari documents, which definitely would effect his judgment over which driver he preferred in strategic matters.
I tried to find information on this and could find nothing. He won the previous year why would they spend so much money on him to sideline him? If he was so unfairly treated how come he did so well and came 3rd. I could point to every car on the grid espcially redbull over the last decade and the giant gulf between Attention to No.1 and No.2 drivers. Not to mention this would be the only time in F1 history where the No.2 was prioritised over the No.1 for an entire season. Again can you give me a source for this and not they opened an investigation, I want to know that they found that Alonso was being so unfairly treated.

@@Alex-cw3rz There is no source because this is all made up bullshit. Alonso got beaten fair and square by a rookie, there were no team orders, no outdated car parts, no suboptimal strategy, nothing. Alonso was never treated as a number 2 driver by McLaren.

I'm new to F1 and majority say he's good just because of the car, and almost every post related to Hamilton has a lot of hate in the comments towards him, it almost made me think he's not that good. However, the more I learn about him, through videos like this one, the more I admire him. Comes from an average family, parents not connected to motorsports, first black pilot, has been under tremendous pressure of high expectations from society since childhood, lots of haters who long for him to fail and still accomplish so much. i'm a fan

Dude has unlimited testing. Drove more miles in testing than all the races combined. So, his season was less miraculous than it seems in terms of a rookie doing. Tying Alonso regardless of experience was the amazing thing.
As much as Sir Lewis Hamilton could have won the 2007 season, I am glad that Kimi got at least 1 championship
