Julien Fébreau - French f1 commentator - broke in tears live on TV in Bahrain in 2020 shortly after we were told that Romain Grosjean escaped from his massive crash. Fébreau later explained that Jules Bianchi's mum had just sent him a text then saying "Jules isn't dead for nothing, he saved a life today". It's worth remembering that it's Jules' accident that prompted the FIA to implement the halo. That's another part of his legacy.
Let's also give credit to Henry Surtees, a Formula 2 driver who was fatally struck in the head by a loose wheel from another car in 2009's Brands Hatch F2 race. Bianchi's death was the event that left the FIA no choice but to take action and introduce the Halo, but Surtees' fatal crash opened the first serious talks of a cockpit protection structure. I wish more people knew about Surtees. I think he deserves to be remembered as much as Bianchi, as he was another talented driver taken well before his peak.
The Halo wouldn't have saved Bianchi, the impact on that tractor was way too hard for the halo to work. This has been well documented. Instead, they modified the hierarchy of controls and insisted that for a tractor to enter the track, a VSC or SC would have to be in place to adequately slow down the drivers.
After Jules's crash in Japan (and also Felipe crash in 2009), Halo start to be developed and later accepted in 2018. The very first driver who was saved by Halo is Charles Leclerc, in Spa 2018.

I think Jules was the first of the Leclerc, Russell, Norris, etc, era of drivers. Incredible speed, but also incredibly humble. It was a new generation back then, it's such a shame he never got to be the one leading the way on track too. He was the first driver I was really excited to see the future of. Gone way too soon.

It really hurts to have seen Bianchi, Senna, Hubert, Earnhardt all pass away from racing in my lifetime, as well as the injuries Kubica went through. No doubt that Bianchi and Kubica would’ve been team mates at Ferrari if things turned out differently. 💔

My dad was a share holder for marussia between 2012 and 2014 and I met Jules a few times such a kind hearted natural person with so much potential after he died at suzuka my dad was devastated to the point he sold his shares...... Jules was a gentleman of a man and I'll never forget him 😢😢
This brought tears to my eyes, again... You know, as a French F1 fan like many others, losing such good drivers and people like Bianchi and later Hubert really hurt. We were waiting for already so long for a new French GP winner, and even if Grosjean scored a couple podiums, everybody knew he wouldn't be the one to do it. So much people believed in Jules instead, like it was obvious when, in fact, nothing was. This put in perspective how we felt about Pierre Gasly winning in Monza. It wasn't only a victory, It was like something wrong in history was finally corrected.
Following up in 2021 with Esteban Ocon's Hungary GP 2021 win must have made French F1 fans even more happy. I remember comments after Pierre Gasly winning about "Do we need to wait for another 26 years for an F1 Win?". To see both of them at Alpine, in 2023 together, each sniping a podium in the season (Monaco for Esteban Ocon, Zandvoort for Pierre Gasly) does put a smile on my face, knowing the drivers and team can deliver if they play their cards and hand very well. Here is hoping they can continue to have consistent points finishes and to be occasionally fight for podiums and wins.
@@Adjudicator1 I've always been skeptical about Alpine, their speeches about building a "National French F1 Team" is a PR stunt at best. Same for Ocon, he looks cool but I've never liked his style, he's too "Sainz-ish" for me. I really want Gasly to go to a better team, like Ferrari or McLaren, this is what he deserves. And for him to bring back his Cevert helmet someday, it was quite a nice touch.

Most drivers at the time said that Vettel was one of the drivers who said that they shouldn't race in Japan (for obvious reasons) but was apparently outvoted so the race went ahead 9 months later and Vettel was one of the people carrying Jules Bianchi's coffin The race after his funeral had no mercedes drivers but instead Sebastian won and Daniel Riccardo and Danny kvyat made podiums as well in what the commentators described as the result Jules would have loved (purely a coincidence it was Jules Bianchi's friends on the podiums Hungary 2015 ) My conspiracy is that Jules made it happen

I can still remember watching this race with my dad and seeing the crash happen, eventhough i was just a young kid i knew something was horribly wrong. This video brought back so many memories of his brilliance and is an amazing tribute. May Jules rest in peace, he truly went too soon.

Also His Godson Charles Leclerc won the Race in Monaco this year and his voice crack in the team radio absolutely makes it more significant since Leclerc Lost His Father in 2017 and ofc. Godfather Jules in 2015 when he's supposed to be driving for Ferrari an year after. But sadly it didn't happen. But Charles is doing what Jules couldn't and he's completing the quest for not only for charles himself but also for Jules and Charlie's father in their honour 👏 RIP JULES and Leclerc Sr. Hope you guys are happy now.

A few weeks before the accident, I was speaking to Johnny Herbert about Bianchi. He was convinced the Ferrari deal was already done and Jules knew it. I was happy to hear that. So awful we never got to see that partnership flourish.
Simply beautiful, the ending of it had me crying my eyes out. Keep up the great work, i love your videos and i can't wait to see what tyou have coming up for the 2024 season. I would really like to see Leclerc win a world championship with Ferrari and dedicate it to Bianchi. That would be incredibly emotional to see and I would love to see it happen in 2024/2025.
I remember watching this live at age 16, the dreadful picture of the car under the crane, all while there was no response from the car. The inevitable cancellation of the race, the months of hope for him to get better and the day when it was clear that he did not survive.... Back then I was not able to process these emotions and maybe it even contributed to me taking a couple of years off of F1 from the end of the 2016 season until today. But luckily today I was finally able to mourn this terrible loss I witnessed from my TV at home. Thank you so much for this honoring piece on him ❤

I still remember the day Bianchi scored two points in Monaco 2014. This was magical. Thanks for the great video. Jules Bianchi was such a likeable driver. Him getting points was a thing I was always hoping for with the three new teams. Seeing it finally happen for real was crazy. I think Max Chilton dedicated a win in another racing-series to him, which was really sweet.
This is why we get angry and vocal when we see live racing and recovery vehicles on the track, this is why we get mad when the safety car is not brought out when there is a car stopped on track. Screw your racing, if you're happy for people to die needlessly doing their job. If you can't handle a stoppage/ safety car or red flag, don't watch the sport; we don't want you to. Dammit Josh I've seen this happen and seen all the youtube videos of this over the years but just hearing Charles get the Ferrari seat brought a tear to my eye watching this one. Great video highlighting the importance of driver and marshall safety over financial greed and remembering Jules again.

I wasnt watching F1 in 2014. I missed this mans drive. But from everything i have seen since joining the F1 community in 2019, i would have loved watching him drive. The perfect story of the underdog. While his death could have been avoided, he is also the reason for the tighter regulation on track classification, the Halo and the Survival Cell. His death is a tragedy, but i wonder how many today are alive because of his demise? Anyway, this was a good little "documentary" and in good flavour and taste.

We should not forget that many drivers likely owe Jules a huge debt of gratitude for the Halo system that is now a standard safety feature. It has been instrumental in saving several lives already. Even after this video ended, I had a well of emotions that wanted to overcome me. Taking the trip back through his career through your video made me thankful that he was given the opportunities that he did, and to know that Charles is in that seat today just feels right. Right for the merit Charles deserved but right for the path that Jules could have had. Right for the motivation that Charles must have felt to reach that point in his career. I wasn't watching F1 during those years (I was a huge Schumi fan as a teen) but I'm a huge Ferrari fan and with him being linked to Ferrari and Leclerc, Jules is part of the family. My dad was a share holder for marussia between 2012 and 2014 and I met Jules a few times such a kind hearted natural person with so much potential after he died at suzuka my dad was devastated to the point he sold his shares...... Jules was a gentleman of a man and I'll never forget him 😢😢

This brought tears to my eyes, again... You know, as a French F1 fan like many others, losing such good drivers and people like Bianchi and later Hubert really hurt. We were waiting for already so long for a new French GP winner, and even if Grosjean scored a couple podiums, everybody knew he wouldn't be the one to do it. So much people believed in Jules instead, like it was obvious when, in fact, nothing was.
This put in perspective how we felt about Pierre Gasly winning in Monza. It wasn't only a victory, It was like something wrong in history was finally corrected.
Following up in 2021 with Esteban Ocon's Hungary GP 2021 win must have made French F1 fans even more happy. I remember comments after Pierre Gasly winning about "Do we need to wait for another 26 years for an F1 Win?".
To see both of them at Alpine, in 2023 together, each sniping a podium in the season (Monaco for Esteban Ocon, Zandvoort for Pierre Gasly) does put a smile on my face, knowing the drivers and team can deliver if they play their cards and hand very well.
Here is hoping they can continue to have consistent points finishes and to be occasionally fight for podiums and wins.
@@Adjudicator1 I've always been skeptical about Alpine, their speeches about building a "National French F1 Team" is a PR stunt at best. Same for Ocon, he looks cool but I've never liked his style, he's too "Sainz-ish" for me.
I really want Gasly to go to a better team, like Ferrari or McLaren, this is what he deserves. And for him to bring back his Cevert helmet someday, it was quite a nice touch.
This always just hits differently. It's such a tragic story. I was contemplating not watching this just because of how sad the end is. A brilliant talent taken too soon.
That P9 in Monaco was absolutely amazing in a car he was driving. Definitely gone too soon and it would always be a "what if..." story about what could've been. Great video!
Not gonna lie, i cried at the end. So heart-breaking to loose him, he would have been great for Ferrari.

Most drivers at the time said that Vettel was one of the drivers who said that they shouldn't race in Japan (for obvious reasons) but was apparently outvoted so the race went ahead
9 months later and Vettel was one of the people carrying Jules Bianchi's coffin
The race after his funeral had no mercedes drivers but instead Sebastian won and Daniel Riccardo and Danny kvyat made podiums as well in what the commentators described as the result Jules would have loved (purely a coincidence it was Jules Bianchi's friends on the podiums Hungary 2015 )
My conspiracy is that Jules made it happen
That beginning part hurt a lot to watch. Knowing how cool, and chilled out Jules was. These formula 1 death videos hurt. 😔
But I’m also glad they’re made to shed light on the situations, and the amazing things these drivers achieved in their time.

Absolutely stellar video Josh. This is some of your best content IMO: Expertly narrated, with tidbits of humor here and there, and an uplifting ending. As much as we all miss Jules, his legacy does live on, forever.
Also, thank you for not including any footage of the race after his crash. Even just Crofty and Brundle's commentary as they try to figure out what happened hits me really hard, let alone the scene of the crash itself. I've watched it a couple times and that's all I want to see to it.

I remember the accident happening in 2014 right after Martin Brundle eerily spoke of an accident he had at Suzuka in 1994. Such a tragedy 😢
This one really hit me hard. I followed Jules for a long time before he got into F1. After he died i got his number tattooed on my shoulder. Even now people ask me what its for and i get a chance to tell them about this amazing guy. We really do miss you. #JB17

Motorsport is one of the best things in my life, but these moments sure hurt like hell.

I can still remember watching this race with my dad and seeing the crash happen, eventhough i was just a young kid i knew something was horribly wrong. This video brought back so many memories of his brilliance and is an amazing tribute. May Jules rest in peace, he truly went too soon.

Also His Godson Charles Leclerc won the Race in Monaco this year and his voice crack in the team radio absolutely makes it more significant since Leclerc Lost His Father in 2017 and ofc. Godfather Jules in 2015 when he's supposed to be driving for Ferrari an year after. But sadly it didn't happen. But Charles is doing what Jules couldn't and he's completing the quest for not only for charles himself but also for Jules and Charlie's father in their honour 👏 RIP JULES and Leclerc Sr. Hope you guys are happy now.

A few weeks before the accident, I was speaking to Johnny Herbert about Bianchi. He was convinced the Ferrari deal was already done and Jules knew it. I was happy to hear that.
So awful we never got to see that partnership flourish.
Simply beautiful, the ending of it had me crying my eyes out. Keep up the great work, i love your videos and i can't wait to see what tyou have coming up for the 2024 season. I would really like to see Leclerc win a world championship with Ferrari and dedicate it to Bianchi. That would be incredibly emotional to see and I would love to see it happen in 2024/2025.
I remember watching this live at age 16, the dreadful picture of the car under the crane, all while there was no response from the car. The inevitable cancellation of the race, the months of hope for him to get better and the day when it was clear that he did not survive....
Back then I was not able to process these emotions and maybe it even contributed to me taking a couple of years off of F1 from the end of the 2016 season until today. But luckily today I was finally able to mourn this terrible loss I witnessed from my TV at home. Thank you so much for this honoring piece on him ❤

Jules Bianchi was such a likeable driver. Him getting points was a thing I was always hoping for with the three new teams. Seeing it finally happen for real was crazy.
I think Max Chilton dedicated a win in another racing-series to him, which was really sweet.
This is why we get angry and vocal when we see live racing and recovery vehicles on the track, this is why we get mad when the safety car is not brought out when there is a car stopped on track. Screw your racing, if you're happy for people to die needlessly doing their job. If you can't handle a stoppage/ safety car or red flag, don't watch the sport; we don't want you to. Great video as always Josh, really thoughtfully put together.
Dammit Josh I've seen this happen and seen all the youtube videos of this over the years but just hearing Charles get the Ferrari seat brought a tear to my eye watching this one. Great video highlighting the importance of driver and marshall safety over financial greed and remembering Jules again.

Very good video Josh. But there’s one mistake. In 2013 Marussia were still using Cosworth engine, not Ferrari. They switched to Ferrari power in 2014.

It is an emotional episode and I struggled to commit to watching it. Jules’ passing was before I started watching F1, but have a faint understanding of his legacy through Charles and the eventual implementation of the halo. I wasnt watching F1 in 2014. I missed this mans drive. But from everything i have seen since joining the F1 community in 2019, i would have loved watching him drive.
The perfect story of the underdog.
While his death could have been avoided, he is also the reason for the tighter regulation on track classification, the Halo and the Survival Cell.
His death is a tragedy, but i wonder how many today are alive because of his demise?
Anyway, this was a good little "documentary" and in good flavour and taste.
One of the saddest vids. Never really paid attention to F1 so often during that time. But we got the internet to remind us of the driving he put on each time he goes into a car.
I was watched him since 09, basically followed and saw all of his formula career, I loved him sooo much, extraordinary talent with an amazing personality, that monaco race...I was so proud of him, so fucking proud, and excited for his future, and then...pain. Nearly 10 year's past, but the pain is just like in that woeful day, we never forget you Jules, never. 🖤

As a kid of the 80s and watching that dark race in Imola 1994, I had that same dread watching the end of the Suzuka 2014 race. Thank you for the beautiful tribute Josh. I see so much of Jules in Charles, that humble driven nature. Never forgotten

I wasn't really watching F1 when Jules was around and racing, but I had always heard so much about him. And after going back and watching his career and races I can understand why so many adored him. Truly one of the greatest losses of humanity, let alone motor racing. Rest in Piece Jules.
I’m a relatively new F1 fan, on an academic level I knew of the tragedy, especially after the farce that was Japan 22, but I never really delved deep into who jules was or his history, this video really hit me hard for some reason, knowing not just about the tragedy, but Jules’ incredible rise and it’s sudden end. I’ll never forget the memories of that day in 2014 knowing something happened to him and the sinking feeling being prepared for the worst and then actually happening in 2015 there’s no doubt in my mind it was the darkest day in F1 while I’ve been watching since 2011/12

Such a fitting tribute to the great man, sensitively done, and aptly timed with the recent Japanese Grand Prix. We should not forget that many drivers likely owe Jules a huge debt of gratitude for the Halo system that is now a standard safety feature. It has been instrumental in saving several lives already. Yet another way to keep him in our hearts. RIP.

You mentioned Greg Moore and I burst into tears. I was so upset at the end of the Fontana Race. I respect Montoya so much after that race. Both Greg and Jules were extremely talented.
Even after this video ended, I had a well of emotions that wanted to overcome me.
Taking the trip back through his career through your video made me thankful that he was given the opportunities that he did, and to know that Charles is in that seat today just feels right. Right for the merit Charles deserved but right for the path that Jules could have had. Right for the motivation that Charles must have felt to reach that point in his career. Jules must be proud straing down at his godson.

I just now had this come up in my suggestions for the first time. I'm 0:41 seconds in and will watch the whole thing but wanted to say this about his wreck first. I have no desire to see the video of it again any time soon and have not seen it in years. After seeing it live, I'm glad the camera was not zoomed in any closer than it already was. And it took me a short while to figure out what I had just seen and was left looking at. Finally realized what had actually happened...
