  • I love Winter Camping. I believe it is a magical time to be in the backcountry with my van, but if you are not prepared, a winter camping trip can go wrong quickly. Check out this video to see how we got trapped and what piece of gear I kept in my van that was integral to getting out of the situation.

@@PrimalOutdoors 31cc 14" bar is fine for a tree 30" in diameter in a recovery situation. You can always cut a wedge and it gives you access to the heart of the log. Watch logging channels.

@@sasquatchrosefartsI do agree with cutting wedges that you could get through a much bigger tree with a small bar, but I think 30” maybe somewhat impractical for a 14” bar and would be very worried if I had an electric saw with a 14” bar😂.

I have a tip for you,. When you are sectioning up a tree that is on the ground try making your first cuts at a right and left angle. Then you will not have the trouble of the section getting pinned between the remaining halves of the tree. Thanks again!

I agree about the gas saw for situations like yours and a min of 16 inch. For everything else though man the electric saws are pretty good fire wood even many downed trees just have two batteries and your pretty good. Nothing worse than starting some of those old gas saws on cold days. 😳

Agree with the chain saw. A good winch and a snatch block is a great way to move a tree. One cut and winch it out of the way using an anchor point and a snatch block. Done it many times with a light weight CJ7.

Great thoughts on chainsaws for self recovery. We have carried an 18” electric Ego which cuts quite similar to our gas 18” Echo and have really loved all its benefits over gas. But we only carry a single large battery pack and gas would certainly work better for multiple large trees down as we carry gas cans with us anyways. We may carry an extra battery and charger if we are expecting a storm in the future.

A friend was at a park here in California and during a windstorm they were blocked in by 4 BIG trees that fell over the only exit road. They would have been trapped for 2+ more days until the park service could get to them. However one person in his convoy had a chainsaw and knew how to use it. So hours of cutting later, they left before the remaining part of the storm could drop more trees in their path.
They did have one close call and were within 50feet of a large tree fall near camp. Just like you had in this video. I've only been considering smaller electric chainsaws as my space of gear is very limited, hard tradeoff to consider.

When your in timber like you are on that side of Oregon is a must. The blues on my side ditto. I would go with a power head big enough to barely handle a 28" bar and run a 22" bar. When you get a 40" tree in the road like we can (for that matter several in a 100 ft of road) you will understand. Casey with coyote works runs electric but being in the junipers if their ever was a tree across the road you only need a couple small cuts and move it. I think the recommendation you gave is a good general starting point for those that aren't familiar with chainsaws. Electric chain saws are to hard to recharge to depend on for emergency use.

A safety concern was to not camp near big trees . Wind. snow weather etc, can cause death, My father was elk hunting in North Oregon about 50 years ago he parked his trailer house out in a big open area. Two guys came in and asked why he had camped out there.. so he told them because it was safer. They shook their heads went up in big timber and set up their tent. a big storm blew in that night . A 36 inch tree feel on their tent killing them. So do not camp in big timber ,and listen to people with more time in the outdoors

Good idea to have an extra bar and chain on your rig. If you would happen to pinch your saw, you would have the means to unbolt from stuck bar and recover stuck bar. Plus gives you an extra fresh chain, if needed. Without having to Sharpen.

On the fire trucks we are transitioning from gas to electric chainsaws and extrication tools. Battery powered devices and chainsaws have definitely made advances in the past few years. I think a battery chainsaw with adequate batteries would do well also.

Looking at the chips flying, Jason your chain could use a bit of file work. 😮

I agree with you on gas vs battery
. (From my experience as a person who has both and work for a saw shop what you had to do would have taken quite longer with a battery (I have a commercial 18” battery saw too) the battery gets really hot and can/will stop on continuous use like you had to do whereas the gas keeps trucking along. I like my battery unit for my camper so I don’t smell like 2 cycle exhaust when I need to use it for small cutting and that’s what it is awesome for. When I go off-roading I grab my gas one just in case I run into a situation like you did.

I live in the forest west of Bend, Oregon. Trees falling across the road can be more than just an inconvenience. I had the opportunity last summer to speak to a person who survived the wildfire two summers ago in Detroit, Oregon. The winds from the wildfire caused many trees to fall across their evacuation route. They were forces to shelter in place in an open field. Since then the 2nd Item on my go bag list is my large power saw with sharp chain, fuel and bar oil. Winter camping is great I love it. Summer camping during fire season can also be at risk of being caught by a fast moving wildfire. In 1979 the Bridge Creek fire ran 3 miles in 2 hours to within a few hundred feet of my home. You may not have the time to wait for others to rescue you. As an old boy scout, Be Prepared and live to camp another day. keep up the good work.

Definitely agree to the gas power. Especially Winter or alone.

Just got done binge watching , some of your older videos. , When you did landscape photography ,all of witch I have already seen , and man I miss seeing Wheeler and Daisy so much . And don't get me worng , I don't know anything about photography , but it was really cool to see you chase the shot , and the end result ( photograph ) most of the time I didn't understand a word you said about what you were doing to get the shot , but it didn't matter , it was great ! You were this super camper , who showed everyone , how to make a real camp fire ( probably, half a cord of wood at a time 😂) and a photographer . And what you called " Cinamatic " style of video was really cool too . Watching your evolution from Primal archery to wear you are now was amazing , can't say thank you enough I've enjoyed it so much , and can't wait to see what comes next .

My 30yr Homelite 330XL still getting it done as well as a Johnsered chainsaw. Long surpassed by STIHL (they make a beaver blush). Have to remember, better than average mechanical abilities is required to effectively operate & maintain gas powered chainsaws. As kids, dad had us on Remingtons, an antique monster Mall, as well as a two man unit. Rural Michigan farmers, heated exusively two homes with wood.

Another thought also if it hasn't been mentioned yet is having a spare chain (or two) for the saw.

You can't go wrong with a Stihl farm boss with a 20-24 inch bar. Having a file to sharpen your chain or a spare chain is also a must.
