    At 3:09 as a heads up, if you have the wiring diagram for the relay (which is often printed on the relay itself) you can manually jumper the terminals the relay plugs into to bypass the relay and eliminate it - or confirm it - as a possible cause of the problem.

    Buy an Airtex E2000. It’s a external fuel pump for a Ford Ranger. Zip tie it to the frame and connect to your existing fuel line and run power from the battery and you will be able to start and drive. They are inexpensive and produces enough fuel pressure for fuel injection. I keep one in my Jeep in case I have a failure of my internal pump.

    I know you must be up and goin by now 1. Turn the key and see if you hear the fuel pump run for two seconds and then turn off. 2. That relay, check the numbers on it and try swapping it with another ... other than PCM or start/crank relay. ... a quick test ... also always carry extra fuel filter too. Back to 3:10 and pause off ... got pop corn and eatens goin.

    You can test that relay. You need to make and keep some test leads for when you'll need them. Put power to the primary posts on the relay to power the relay. Then, have your meter measuring across the secondary to see if it's powering, or not powering, when you connect or disconnect the primaries.

    That 5.8 is an absolutely great motor. It's the best gas motor they had. I agree Diesels are more power and better. Most swing towards the 7.3l. And I agree it's a million mile motor. But the Trans is not. Although I hear a lot of flack for it. The 6.0l is the best motor you can have for them. If you do the work it takes to fix it. The Trans is pretty amazing too. Fuel mileage, Tq, HP. All class leading. Reliability is huge too. As long as you do ALL the bulletproofing and have the heads checked when you have it built. It can be around $10,000 for the work. More if you go with someone who jacks the prices up. But you want someone that really knows them. Once "Fixed" right. They're a million mile motor with 500hp and 900ft/lb torque that will last forever. I get 19mpg with mine at 400hp and 800ft/lb torque. It also has 210,000 miles on it.
    P.S. The 7.3's can have upgrades to get more power out of them but can't touch a 6.0. But with no upgrade the 7.3l are dogs. And to do the work to get the extra power it's going to cost a lot. With $10,000 of work on a 7.3 or $10,000 of work on a 6.0. The 6.0 will have more power and last just as long with a better transmission. If you leave them both stock. Some 6.0's will last forever. Most 7.3's will. But both are pretty much dogs.

    You mentioned before the truck running out of power. Your pump could of been in the way out. I also recall you mentioning a motor build.
    5.8 SBF. Is solid foundation. Myself would do a stroker in 400ci range. Good set of heads made for the rpm you desire it make power at. As well same for the cam and intake. You won’t want full race high reving parts. Go for tq mid range 3000 rpm max tq. Truly the power comes from artificial aspiration. A clean turbo set up would leave you with plenty and help in the higher altitudes.
    This is just my thoughts on spending your money. LoL.

      I have owned and DO own a ton of e350s. ..1991-2014.. 7.3psd, v10, 5.4, 5.8... gotta say for simplicity and durability the 5.8 seems like a good choice. His tranny upgrade probably makes some sense. Old school durable, and convience of EFI. Additionally, the complexity of full change over would include a MAJOR rewiring which would be a nightmare. I have contemplated a body off build of a 4x4 conversion, and conversion to a 7.3 IDI , divorced transfer. It would be a classic Jonny Cash 1993-4-2011 body/grill
      ..it would be a HUGE undertaking. I did save a bunch of parts here to do this. Maybe someday.

    Nuthin' wrong with the 5.8/351 It's a solid reliable motor. The 7.5/460 is nice but if you don't really need the power you'll use less fuel with the 5.8
    The newer 5.4 is nice too (IF we're talking about the 2-valve version that went in the vans, and 2004-on. The 3-valves are troublesome.)

    • @christianholmstedt8770
      @christianholmstedt8770 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, the 3V is a hard pass. The 2V modulars are good but make sure to torque the plugs correctly otherwise they migth blow out. Some idiot at Ford thought it was a great idea to use 3.5 out of 8 threads on the plugs. What an idiotic move. Besides that the modulars are really reliable engines.

  • @drott150

    Why would it ping and knock just with low/marginal fuel pressure? I could see it might run a little lean, but I can't see why that would cause really noticeable knocking and pinging, especially in cold weather like that. Is the distributor/ignition system vacuum advance, or is it all electronic? Just wondering if there's a vacuum leak affecting spark advance and/or fuel pressure regulation.

  • @christianholmstedt8770
    @christianholmstedt8770 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would argur that the old 5.8 migth even be a better option than the newer modular engines the van came with. I do have the 6.8 V10 and it is amazingly smooth with tons of power but there is still the risk of blowing out plugs. The 3V version (if the vans came with them I'm not actually sure) are somewhat of ticking timebombs since the valve timing mechanism can fail.
    Anyway, a rebuilt 5.8 with a hotter cam is probably a good route to go. Diesels are 'cool' but maintenance cost is way higher and they are noisy AF (at least the older ones).

    I know this was a stressful situation and this experience sucked, but I like these types of videos best. Real problems as they happen with the process of finding the pathway to real solutions. Especially because it happens to be a Ford van (which I have), although the same situation with a Chevy would be insightful as well.
