  • Lyrics - Civilla D. Martin (1906)
    Music - Charles H. Gabriel (1906)
    Key - Db Major
    Tempo - ♪=192
    SATB - J. Elliot Bowman
Recorded at the Northeast church of Christ in Cookeville, TN.

Keep in mind that the main purpose of these videos is to encourage congregational 4-part harmony singing. I record and mix these in such a way to help the listener hear parts more clearly. I urge you to listen with earbuds/headphones or true stereo speakers. Laptop and phone speakers are not only garbage for critical listening, they provide no sense of stereo which can be helpful while listening to these. Alto is slightly towards the left ear/channel and tenor is towards the right ear/channel. Soprano and bass are right down the middle.
If you enjoy the way that these hymns are sang and want to experience them in person, stop by just about any church of Christ and they'll likely be singing them the same way. Without instruments.

Is it just me or does this song have some great barbershop type harmonies? I'm loving it! Interesting vocal ranges for each part too... tenors up to Eb (and sopranos but that's nothing abnormal), altos down to Ab (and basses, but again, not abnormal). Kinda makes me want to adjust the keying to make it easier for them, but either way you move it someone suffers more. May have to introduce my congregation to this, though it's not in our hymnal. Oh! Also gotta love a flat flat :)

I first discovered that I enjoy singing harmony when listening to Beatles albums when I was around 9-10. Not long after that, I started intently listening to my dad sing bass at church and then I started trying to sing like him. Eventually I begged him to sing tenor so I could try to do that as well. I never really learned to read for vocals until much later but at that time, I started watching the notes go up and down and started to be able to tell the difference in intervals. Well, as best as a 11-13 year old can. Haha.... I've had a passion for traditional hymns since adolescence that has grown over the years. I enjoy some of the newer songs as well. But I find that I worship best through traditional hymns.
While I don't prefer the timbre of my voice, I do realize how much of a gift it is to be able to read music and record these wonderful hymns. I'm not sure I would consider it a calling to do this channel. But more of an obligation to God and His church to share what talents I have. I'm hopeful that, through this channel, traditional 4-part harmony *worship* can be renewed in churches.

For my recordings, I use church hymnals that are published for the purpose of four part harmony worship such as Praise for the Lord, Songs for Worship and Praise, and a few others. But if you're ever looking for sheet music for public domain hymns (written 95 years ago or older), I highly recommend hymnary.org. They scan pages from hymnals and have them available to download/print for free. They have His Eye Is On The Sparrow hymnal scans all the way back to 1905!

@@acappellahymns OK, but a hard R is rather ugly; try to either use a soft R or roll it. When a word ends in a consonant, hold the not on the vowel, and put the consonant at the very end. Also, a broad English E is another ugly sound. Try to round your lips a bit--it will make it sound nicer. (My late mother was a graduate of Eastman, and taught voice for almost 50 years.)

Copyright admins often charge large fees for that sort of thing. And then there's the issue of sheet music. If it's available in a traditional 4-part harmony arrangement, that's easier for me.
