I think the new 34 is an example of "evolution, not revolution". Seems like a good option, but I think I'd take the SID due to its comparative simplicity. Not everyone likes messing around with settings.

Helpful video. Definitively disappointing about the clearance issues with FOX (disk and width). I know some purists would feel that you shouldn't run wider tires and bigger rotor, but there are plenty of potential users that this design just turned away.
Thankfully the bike i bought last year has the "old" stepcast. I find it to be more rigid and stiff than my rockshox, but when i do hit a bigger bump it seems to work like butter. Not used to this race type fork. I also have a new 4 piston caliper i want to put on the front because the brakes complain on the north shore and i also wanted to put a 203mm rotor on it and i checked, i have matt black, no rear channel and the sculpting is on the outside so i am happy about that. It is a down XC not an XC. My other bike has a 4 piston 203 setup on the front and it works way better. The other major change is i went from racing ralph/ray 2.25" to a specialized grnd ctrol 2.3" and that has fixed the traction problems i was having. Once weather clears up and i can do a couple of runs before chaning the brakes, to have a sooner comparison, i should have a perfect bike, for climbing and riding down. Thx for your vid.

I have a 2018 Fox 34, 2020 Fox 34 SC, and a 2020 SID Ultimate, all 120mm travel. The overwhelming story with Fox in the past 10 years here on the BC west coast has been creaky CSU's. Every one of these recent Fox forks as well as the generation before 2018, has developed creaky steerer tubes within the first 100 hrs. I've consistently had to replace CSU's every season on every Fox, which I think is a total racket. I switched to the SID Ultimate to hopefully be rid of the creaky CSU's and so far have 150hrs creak-free on the SID. I'm running two tokens on the SID and find it to be harsher than any of the Fox forks, but good enough. The SID came with the 2-stage race day damper and remote lockout, which worked consistently. In early 2022, I upgraded to the 3-stage race-day damper which Scott specs on their Spark lineup, and it failed right out of the box. Still waiting for warranty replacement from Sram. I'm a 180lb rider on intermediate trails and wonder if the new Fox design has seen improvements with CSU durability. What about riders elsewhere, have you seen the same issues with Fox? Here's to hoping they put this issue behind them.
Hey there! Nice content. It's great to see a Canadian TH-camr making mtb videos. I bought the SID Select as a way to make my older cross country bike a little more capable and I didn't like it. I find that the supposed low speed adjustment on the fork doesn't really do anything and with the proper amount of pressure in the fork for my weight I don't find that the fork has a pedal platform and it bob's up and down too much when I'm pedaling. unlike my older Sid fork which has a pedal platform setting. So I found somebody in BC selling a 2022 fox 34 step cast 120 so I bought it. I'm going to try that one instead. The Grip damper seems to have low speed compression adjust to allow for a pedal platform.

I don't lock out my forks either unless I am tired and riding pavement home...I just want a pedal platform to reduce bob. The SID Select feels like it is all or nothing and with nothing, it is so open it mushes into its travel and bobs while pedalling at what seems like the correct psi. I like the stiffness of the fork and the way the bike handles, just not the total lack of lsc. I even sent the fork back to Rock Shox thinking something was wrong and it came back the exact same. Even without re installing the fork and just comparing it with my SID RCT3 and the new FOX SC 34 120 it is obvious the SID Select has no lsc apart from open or firm lockout.

I have raced both the new MY22 SC34, and SID ultimate 35 for past year and half. I would say I prefer the Rockshox more. It is a noticeably stiffer, comes standard with 180mm post mount, and race day damper is excellent! Since I like to ride my xc bike in trails for much bigger bikes, I really appreciated the SID. However, the 34 is still awesome, and I am currently on it with my current bike, just not as plush or stiff. But It is about 75g lighter, since I am running 160mm rotor and no adapter. Can't go wrong with either!!
I have been using the 2019 34 FIT4 stepcast for the last 2.5 years and its been a great fork, but I managed to get the 2019 fox 34 stepcast performance for dirt cheap which uses the grip damper and its MUCH better, GRIP is so much plusher and small bumps feel lightyears better but at the expense of an extra 100 grams its well worth it!
Hello . My Fox SC 34 is experiencing a small lock at the beginning of the stroke. This only occurs after a longer period of not using the bike. After the first use, this feeling of being locked at the beginning of the stroke disappears. It has remote lockout. What could It be?
Ever compared mid range forks? X-Fusion Slide 34 to Marzocchi Bomber Z2 to Rockshox Revelation? These forks are very good and half the price or 1/3 of the price of high end forks.
I want to like the Sid 35 but I am completely unconvinced by the lack of oil volume in the damper. I want the Sid chassis with a more useful damper, because I like the ease of maintenance and robustness of the 35mm of the sid. I also like the good old grip damper more than the fit4, which is why I have the same SC34 (old version) as you show in this vid. If you get the chance, tell something about your perceived experience with SC34 (new) and the sid35. Also would be interesting to hear if the lack of oil in the Sid damper is as problem or if it's just me being paranoid about having to service the thing all the time.
@@LoveMTB Lower leg oil is one thing, 10 ml is fine, I meant the race day damper as you say. It's a tiny amount of oil that goes in it compared to other dampers. It looks so tiny and flimsy to me, but if it works it works. That's why it's great to hear from someone more brave than me who bought it :)

I have the SID on my Transition Spur. Was previously a Fox 34 rider (with Fit 4 damper) but I prefer the SID. The reason? Feels noticeably stiffer and costs half as much as the Fox (at least here in Europe). Super easy to service and maintain. I'm also a big fan of the Sidluxe rear shock.

If you are realistic about your weight and what you ride, a 32 should be fine. I would say below 175lbs and if you are riding blue green trails, not crazy gnar or getting air an average mountain biker, imo, should be completely fine. 10 to 20 years back people free road on 32mm forks and no one complained about flex.

@@TeamCykelhold Been on the R7 Pro for a few seasons and that fork from top to bottom is plush. I'm a single speeder and it's the strongest lock out I've ridden but still has a nice blow-off. I just ordered the '22 SC34 but I imagine the R7 will be back on the bike before long. I agree, Manitou doesn't get enough deserved attention.

You can service just about anything yourself if you have the tools and knowhow except maybe the nitrogen in some rear shocks. But as a general rule, Rockshox are much easier to service.
I don't have a side-by-side apples to apples comparison yet as I'm replacing the Fox 34SC with the SID Ultimate 120...hoping it arrives this week. My use case is an Ibis Tranny 29 that I run both singlespeed and geared....it's also my go-to offroad bikepacking tourbike. I've only able to test the SID U 120 on another friend's Santa Cruz Highball, the common denominator is that we're both running custom built Duke Racing wheels with DT350 hubs (Same builder and specs...but different tire preference). The SID felt noticeably stiffer, and rode higher in the travel even while standing which for me when I have the bike setup singlespeed because it gives a really good platform, but I stand a lot anyways...its a hardtail. The Fox did feel slightly more plush, but both are miles and miles ahead of lower offerings like the Judy or Rekon....it's just a world of difference and the difference is small at the top tier compared to budget offerings (no experience with the Grip). The Fox 34SC was my first jump back over to Fox from my last one which was 2005ish with the Float 120 RLC which later I sent off to a company (I can't recall the name) to replace a lot of the internals for upgrade. The only reason I mention this is that I find Rockshox service intervals and reliability to be quite better than Fox, and I could push those service intervals quite a bit further without a drop in performance. I didn't have really problems with the 34SC, and I've been through one service interval but the improvements that I feel with the SID Ultimate...for me at least are worth the switch.....I hope.
@@LoveMTB Its an older Tranny 29 (T-29), pretty basic frame but with the neat "party trick" rear triangle that allows it to be packed down smaller than a regular frame and purposeful for running singlespeed or beltdrive. The only thing that wasn't to my liking was the steep HTA which has been resolved with a wolf tooth 2* angleset and running 120mm where it puts the numbers much closer to my Ripley LS. One thing I should note is that I really didn't want the select switch since I run a remote lockout. I know you can hack the 34SC with a 3 pos. lockout using a Shimano 3X front shifter, but I never got around to it.. The remote lockout is an important feature for me.
I’m considering the SC34 to put on my Epic Evo to replace the RS Reba that came with it. Do you think it would be a good fit for XC/light trail riding ? Should I look at the non-SC 34 ?
impressive weight numbers for both the fox and rock shox. I have always found the 34 to be a good all around fork. I am a heavier rider, so i am scared to put my weight on SID's anymore :) (broken forks)
Can't beat my Reba, cause the Reba is on my bike! 😋 Only had one ride on the new servo wave-less bl-m4100 levers, but I'm liking them so far. And they're like properly sealed behind the piston, so winner winner chicken dinner. Also new shifter sl-m4100 is really quite good. For now still miss double up shift. But it's a clamp on version, so no more selling and buying stupid integrated shifters.
I'm so out of shape, that it's really a painful riding now. checked my records, and found that I did 50km in January, then 3 months of heavy depression training and 0 riding. So onto depressive re-conditioning to get stamina back :-/ But it's OK, could have been much worse
What model year Fox 32 SC? Is that 2020 or newer? I understand the latest gen 32 SC has improved stiffness, wonder if it’s still noodly in comparison to the 2022 Fox 34 SC. 90kg rider, so risky for me to purchase any fox 32, but would be curious on anyones input.

I bought the 2022 FOX 32 SC for my new hardtail build and I love it so far after only a few rides.
i got the new 34 SC on my revel ranger....its nice...you really cant go wrong...that SID is awesome too.

I ride a Fox34 and for 1.93 meter 90kg guy this is an XC fork for sure 😉 The 32 doesn't carry my weight very well in high impact corners.

Stiffer fork can also be more comfortable. A flexible fork bind the seals, bushing and stanchion which make the travel harsh.

Oil draining out of the wiper foam rings. Put the bike upside down once in a while it helps

Just bought the new 22 regular fox 34… massive tire clearance. My 2.6 dissector has tons of room, maybe could even squeeze in a 3.0.

IMHO best RS SID is OEM Select+, just because of RaceDay damper in Ultimate...
35 SID can be rebuild for 100mm. There is Factory kit.

I’m considering the SC34 to put on my Epic Evo to replace the RS Reba that came with it. Do you think it would be a good fit for XC/light trail riding ? Should I look at the non-SC 34 ?

impressive weight numbers for both the fox and rock shox. I have always found the 34 to be a good all around fork. I am a heavier rider, so i am scared to put my weight on SID's anymore :) (broken forks)

i have a fox fork on my top fuel and the first thing i did was remove the decals, but, i dont like branding in general

Only had one ride on the new servo wave-less bl-m4100 levers, but I'm liking them so far. And they're like properly sealed behind the piston, so winner winner chicken dinner.
Also new shifter sl-m4100 is really quite good. For now still miss double up shift.
But it's a clamp on version, so no more selling and buying stupid integrated shifters.
I'm so out of shape, that it's really a painful riding now.
checked my records, and found that I did 50km in January, then 3 months of heavy depression training and 0 riding. So onto depressive re-conditioning to get stamina back :-/
But it's OK, could have been much worse
What model year Fox 32 SC? Is that 2020 or newer? I understand the latest gen 32 SC has improved stiffness, wonder if it’s still noodly in comparison to the 2022 Fox 34 SC. 90kg rider, so risky for me to purchase any fox 32, but would be curious on anyones input.
