Have the network of roads which criss-cross Kenya become death traps? Between 2020 and 2021 Kenyan road deaths rose more than 20 per cent. Last year, more than 4,500 were killed and over 16,000 injured. The Kenyan Government says drunk driving, overloading, and speeding are among the top causes of the carnage. But is corruption also a factor?
Journalist Richard Chacha, himself paralysed in a road accident ten years ago, joins Africa Eye to expose rogue driving school employees who, for a fee, fix it for rookie drivers to get behind the wheel without ever having to take a driving test. Africa Eye also reveals how brokers take cash to beat the vehicle safety testing system, enabling taxis fit for the scrap heap to be driven on Kenya’s roads…and carry passengers.

However, Africa is fortunate that there is currently no corruption in it in relation to the World Health Organization. In Europe, America, and Asia, people have been pushed into vaccination. It is corruption to vaccinate people with a vaccine that has not been fully tested and validated. And that the World Health Organization and governments around the world have been selling people how the dangerous virus is spreading and we are in a pandemic. This is corruption that the mainstream media is not talking about. People get a substance into their bodies for no good reason that they know absolutely nothing about. The vaccine is in the research period and they have already vaccinated about 65% of people, "laboratory mice". However, the instructions for the virus test clearly state that it is for research purposes only. Based on them, we determined the official number of infection. You have corruption on a small level and then there is elite corruption on a global level. But that's the way it is everywhere. They hunt small criminals while the big ones walk free.
My uncle was a matatu driver for years and never ever had a drivers/license,he was acoholic and often would get achohol tremor often with a matatu full of people,he has since died but thinking about his actions makes chills in my spine.... corruption over lives is a real thing and those that pay the price are sadly the innocent ones

Finally a documentary about the dangerous Kenya's roads, poor driving and corruption. I can't drive in Kenya, it gives me chills and nightmares. You don't know how bad this is when you're in it daily. Everytime I visit Kenya I'm glad to leave home safe and thankful to God.
Takes a special kind of mental blockage to manage it. Watching this makes getting into a car again muuch harder tho.
Given the recent case of the lady who was stripped and harassed after getting into an accident with the motorcycle gangs. Its a national issue and NTSA needs to do a crack down on licesnses etc.
Every morning when I wake up and start my car, I have a certain fear in my heart. It is so bad especially in Nairobi and its environs. Fromm reckless drivers to smoking jalopies, you can't help but feel sad for this country. Uhuru has really taken this country to the dustbin.

It's like this in Nigeria as well, and likely over the whole of Africa. It's so disappointing and embarrassing. People blame corruption for everything, but those same people will be the ones offering bribes for an easy route to get a driving license etc.
It all basically starts with us as individuals, we simply gotta do n be better to overcome this. In Kenya we see it daily how shortcuts end up costing people lives n it is just sad 🤦🏾♂️

How can one be so greedy to the point of not thinking about sharing the same road with the people they give these licenses to, and take bribes from to give their cars a "pass". People will only bribe for a license if they already know how to drive but are prevented from getting a license due to long waits, red tapes, onerous bureaucracy and so on.
I myself have been waiting for my driver's license for more than 2 months now, I can drive and I have been driving for over 5 years now, I started driving as a teen in Nigeria.
And I have been using fake license because the person I paid faked a license I never knew it was fake until it expired and I needed to renew it I applied online only to see the license doesn't exist, now I applied for a real one I've been put on a wait list for over 2 months, but i have to drive to work, drive to buy groceries, what do I do? Park my car and use taxi till however long it takes for them to give me my license?
Recently I was in Uganda, reducing speed or stopping at zebra crossing for pedestrians to pass will fetch you insults from other drivers...I felt something was wrong...sadly when I talked some people about this they never saw a problem with it and actually laughed me off...our problem is not only for those with authority but we are all a problem as Africans...safety doesn’t matter in most of what we do.

Not to mention the only working bridges in most of the Bush areas are 150 year old Dutch built bridges and the roads from that time have all disappeared. Ask a local about the old bridges and they have crazy stories about who built these things.
I don't know what got us to this point but we're too savage and don't value human life.

It's the same in Ghana if you dare stop at a zebra crossing to let people cross , it's not just insults from other drivers , some stupid drivers will smash the back of your car. Also all that is happening in Kenya is everywhere in Africa.

My hometown is quite small and we have about 5 driving schools. I believe some of them allow you to pay for the license as long as you mention that you can drive. But, I must commend a lady NTSA officer (short hair-deep voice) based at the NTSA HQs-Embu. She's very strict with tests and makes people repeat driving school classes if they do not qualify. She has zero tolerance for bribes.

As an accident survivor whose life was changed because of reckless driving it pains that our country has been reduced to this . How is it that we value money more than a human life . This is sick to the core .

@@Ms.J7890 well it's only through that money that my kids can eat because you can't buy food without money. Also in your scenario I'm dead so I won't be feeling anything at that point coz I'm not alive... But point is that money will help them alot. This is life whether you die choking on a chicken bone or die in an accident it doesn't matter... we will all die someday, we can't live forever

As a Kenyan I have to agree that we need better road safety, reinforced driver training and corruption in driving institutions to be halted. A lot of people die in road accidents it's time for CHANGE!!!

The roads are also a problem: Roads with ditches on the sides that cause cars to overturn or crash, lack of lighting on the sides of roads (it’s in the center, third-world style where it exists in urban areas), lack of shoulders, etc. It’s almost impossible to end up in ditches on roads in developed countries and unusual to overturn. I have even thought I might overturn. I saw multiples more overturned vehicles in three years living in Kenya Kenya than I have in the rest of my life.
Since driving is so basic and simple that people pay for license rather than taking a simple test reflects on a place where standards are disregarded and reckless behavior, which classes will not remedy.
I have my official driving licence with 100% honesty but I'm scared to drive on roads of Nairobi
I don't drive when I'm there, lol It's a very scary sight! We hire a professional driver to take us from Nairobi to Bondo every time we are in Kenya and even though he is certified and is an excellent driver, it still makes me nervous.

My sister drove only 200 metres for her exams, on a straight road in Kenya. How do you gauge someones driving skills for only 200 metres? My exams in Germany lasted 45mins, I drove on the highway, in the city, in residential areas, along the way you have traffic lights, several traffic signs, diversions, pedestrian crossing, trains crossing, and not forgetting how many compulsory driving lessons you must complete.
In Jamaica the exam is 2hrs.
Written test, Yard test and Road test.

I went to ROCKY DRIVING SCHOOL and heard the worst experience of my life. They would not let me attend classes nor do my test without giving out cash. I was extorted till I left
Same experience. Went to AA and the experience was way different inclusive of defensive driving

AA is the best driving school in Kenya by far.
Serious reforms are urgently needed in the transport system in Kenya. The proverbial Michuki rules should return with immediate effect. How long shall we continue losing lives on the road? Enough is enough!

I never knew that Richard Chacha got paralyzed 😥💔. I’ve been out of Kenya for 4 years and never ever saw anything about his accident on social media; this just broke my heart big time. Kenya needs serious prayers and a change of leadership!

My wife was told by an instructor at Rocky Driving School _ Kitengela to pay Ksh.2000 to pass the test, We agreed she will not. Of course, they failed her. I took it upon myself, visited NTSA offices....presented my case. Was sent back to the school but the one at Railways...booked another exam and this time round passed the exam. We only need to engage them and avoid the rush - Take your time. It cost us more (paying for another test) but I am glad we did the right thing!
Everyone, or at least some of us, will always try to take shortcuts because we as humans are inherently selfish. Therefore, to curb such incidences we should create a fault-proof system that dissuades us from taking such actions.

This is the sad part. Kenyan ordinary citizens always accusing top leaders of corruption. But it trickles down to the grass root. We all love short cuts. We feel deeling with incorruptible people is such an inconvenience.

Driving in Kenya is a extreme sport, I have a video of 3 cars trying to overtake a truck and taking up the whole road, very dangerous experience
I live in Nairobi and my apartment is just by the road, Waiyaki Way. Trust me the number of accidents I have witnessed is crazy. I used to be afraid when I first moved in but now I'm just used to. This docu made so much sense. NTSA 🤦🏾♀️ #sad

The government should introduce a law that indicates no use of full lights especially in a 2way round,all first world countries have banned use of full lights.
Most of those vehicles driven with full beam headlights have tinted windscreens. Who approved front windcreen tints? Fucked up ntsa and police
You forget that even those of us who go for the actual driving test, pay at least 1000 so that they are " friendly" and not fail the exam
I have both the kenyan and new york driving licenses, all I can say is our drivers are mostly half baked and our roads especially the lack if clear road signs is a major disaster.

@@MS-MS11 The Kenyan one is easier and less stressful. Just join any good driving school preferably , do the road test and I am sure you will pass.
I quit pettans after a week. Our "instructor" would not allow you to drive the recommended distance unless you gave him some money for "squad". Pettans is the worst driving school and use advertisements to cover for their flaws.

The moment you're on a Kenyan road, death beckons. Neither drivers nor passengers' safe arrival is guaranteed.
I wish you had extended your investigation to other driving schools. You would be surprised that more than half of the drivers in Kenya acquired their licences this way. In Kenya if you have money, the money gets you a licence and licence sends you to a grave...sad
For me, there are three reasons why these accidents will continue occurring in Kenya if these three reasons are not tackle, 1. Corruption which I just discovered in this documentary, 2. The road are terribly constructed and 3. Alcohol intake. Most of the accidents occurred during weekends in Nairobi where people drink uncontrollable. Just observed on Monday how many accidents vehicles are been todd on trucks.
I wouldn't blame on the roads though, Kenya has the best transport system. There are other African countries where the roads are a mess and most are in the tropical zones so it rains 24/7 . We have better roads .
Remember when Michuki was in charge. There was discipline on the roads.
Companies and Saccos need to hold their employees accountable. Some companies don't double check this licenses and some Saccos are just there like rumours to be seen and nothing other than that .
Let's just say , the laws have been there , but the mafias keep growing, there are insurance companies that make money off of accident covers. If there are so many accidents many will join in to have a cover. The popo on the roads want to make some dime. Basically there are people making $$$ out of accidents .

thank you for highlighting this.... I get anxious whenever I get to drive in this roads, I am a qualified driver, driven for the last 13years, the things I have seen in the roads are just heart wrenching. It takes a personal resolve to make others safe on the roads.

My take on this:
Majority of those accidents in Kenya are consequences of overspeeding and blatant abuse of traffic rules (Overtaking at blind spots, at junctions, dangerous overlapping, specifically motorcycles are forever overlapping at high speed .... numerous times in a day I have had to scamper for safety by dashing left out of the road to avoid a head-on collision with a vehicle mostly bus, truck or matatu overtaking). At the sight of traffic police these drivers behave with discipline then shortly after passing the police they swing back to bad driving.
Someone should test this hypothesis:
That most of the accidents in Kenya involve roadworthy vehicles being driven dangerously on good road surface.
It is the mindset behind the wheels which is the big problem.Why try to race in an ordinary car? Why overtake in a blind corner?Why the silence from passengers when a psv driver is driving recklessly? There is a need for a total transformation in the thinking and attitude of Kenyan road users.

Cry my beloved Kenya!! 🇰🇪 I remember been offered this ‘service’ by my driving instructor. To imagine a fake driver would take you or your loved ones life is so scary. Like my UK instructor told me, “Don’t trust the other drivers,you might be the only sane driver on the road!!” How true that is,especially in Kenya.

Am at a place in my life where I don't care or even feel bad about Kenya's image to the outside world no matter how much you try to love Kenya something comes up and just dampens the mood.
Kenya is a laughing stock and a starter convo for foreigners, I should know I had the displeasure to overhear some foreigners laughing on how kenya is a joke in a flight from Ethiopia all the way to Europe. Can confirm, got hit by an overlapping GSU bus in 2019 (minor injuries), drunk driver cut us off on a bike last year (broke my leg). Lost my pal ( a safety ambassador and rider) last year: it was an (allegedly drunk) NTSA official making an illegal turn that did him in as well.

The government allowing every Tom, Dick and Harry to open a driving school is what is causing all this mess. The government should regulate this issue by allowing one driving school that has been in the country for years to be the only operator and it should decide on the curricula. This is the only way to tame rogue driving schools.
You are faulting only Driving Schools. It's a whole system that's rotten to the core - NTSA, Motor Vehicle Inspection Unit, Traffic Police, Traffic Court, Matatu Owners and we Kenyans with our kitu kidogo culture

Bumps are erected even in a meter before bend corner with no road signs, wreck less matatu drivers, corrupt traffic officers and everything is always chaos in Africa no political wills to fight corruption. Even Anti corruption Authority itself is corrupt, how do we expect them to end corruption?
If this isn't the truth I don't know what is, to add insult to injury, anti corruption is so corrupt, if you become a whistle blower, you'll end up disappearing mysteriously.

I have both my NYS driving license and my Kenyan Driving license. And I have to say that driving school and the test in Kenya were so much easier than in the states. As long as you can change the gears and keep the car on the road you pass.

The problem with Kenya is corruption. This is a very serious issue not only affecting people's lives but the reputation of the government too. From the government agencies, police, to the general public, everyone is corrupt. With money, one can afford anything in Kenya.
Minimal Corruption is done you and me first of all let's change that and we can think about as a whole nation

Can you do an expose on these companies in Kenya that misuse and abuse their interns, imagine they hire them as sales people but do not give them any financial support out on the field...as in you have to pay for your own transportation to make sales for them. Even banks are exploiting desperate jobless graduates it’s a shame!!
Some also mistreat university students on attachment by giving them tonnes of work.
The roads are also a problem:
1. Roads with ditches on the sides that cause cars to overturn or crash,
2. Lack of lighting on the sides of roads (it’s in the center, third-world style where it exists in urban areas),
3. Lack of shoulders, etc. It’s almost impossible to end up in ditches on roads in developed countries and unusual to overturn. I saw multiples more overturned vehicles in three years living in Kenya than I have in the rest of my life. I have even thought I might overturn.
4. Lack of reflectors, striping and grooving to assist drivers in staying in their lanes;
5. Lack of sufficient dual-carriage roads for fast long distance travel since head on collisions kill multiple more people than accidents of cars headed in the same direction.
Since driving is so basic and simple that people pay for license rather than taking a simple test, this is reflective of a place where standards are disregarded. Classes will not remedy reckless behavior.

Jeez! I remember exactly witnessing Vehicle @ 2:58 That happened @ Ng'ong Road near Junction Mall when the construction was still under expansion. The driver was Heavily Drunk.
This exposes the ripple effect of corruption in the transport industry ... A driving school passes a person who isn't meant to be operating a vehicle. NTSA approves. A traffic officer accepts a bribe during the first incident. The driver is accustomed to getting away with offences by flashing cash. The driver ends the life of another road user. Rinse and repeat!
Right. Its from top to bottom. Its universal, everyone does it and everyone expects it. So people think its normal and acceptable. Little do they know they are only harming themselves in the long run. They are also destroying the fabric of society. Then nobody wants to do business in Africa because everyone is trying to rob you and cheat you.

I've been to Kenya and yep this documentary is correct, sad but true....but I still love my Keyan people and the country! Every time we visit, we hire the same driver whom is licensed and a safe driver to drive us from Nairobi to Bondo. It's not our driver I'm worried about, its the others on the road that freaks me out! Further more, driving in the city....no one follows the rules! Driving on the Country side (village life) more calm less hectic but still can get a little crazy at times lol. ALL I can say, is buckle up tight and pray for the best!

The green matatu at the 9:07 mark killed my friend last year on December. It was taken off the streets for a few days and got back to working like nothing happened. The owner of the vehicle wasn't even apologetic about the accident

I'm Zambian and my close family and friends got licences before they could even drive. This is an African problem. I'm scared to drive so I never got one when I was in Zambia and up to now the thought of driving just scares me.

That's sad. I wonder if the people who do those corrupt things really realise how it will cause injury/ death further on down the line?! It's really causing alot of carnage that doesn't need to happen...not to mention more pressure of the emergency services.
They also need to investigate after an accident to ensure those licences/ roadworthy certificates were a issued correctly but that is again where a problem will be if people are already not following proper protocols!!!
15k! That was a bit over the top. A friend I know of only paid 20$ to get her license without taking the test. Although she did study for almost two months for it and went for driving classes 4 days a week during that time.
So sad to see innocent lives lost through this monster called corruption 🙏 😢
I've had my license for 37 years. It's a bit of a process to have the privilege for sure so this is pretty scary to see.
