Don't take it for granted. I've done 6 months, 8 months, and 2 years drink free. Each time I had the same arrogance as you. I'll never ever ever drink again. One moment of weakness was all it took. Love the fact you're embracing sober loving - but don't get complacent with it ❤
Isnt it better to just stop drinking like crazy instead of stop drinking at all? Problems coming when you eat too much drink too much run too much work too much. People doing all sort of things too much and then regret. But if you drink a bottle of wine every week with family or a beer or even few shots of vodka once in a week you not alcoholic.
@@sajuente8235 There are different types of people. Some say that "I'm the one is too many and a hundred is not enough". For these people abstinence is possible and probably wise.
Nearly 70 years old and I found I was no longer enjoying alcohol. Drinking for the sake of it. Not that I drank heavily, never binge drinking, cant remember the last time I was drunk, I would have a couple of cans of beer a night. Now I drink alcohol free beer, the Guinness is great, I feel more alert, hard to explain. Having a dodgy liver , caused by years of drinking, and medication I was taking just help me to make this commitment. Good luck, I hope you can keep alcohol free, 2 years for me now. I'm sure you can also do it.
You must of drank a lot of beer to feel like that pal, I have about 5 pints on a Saturday night and I’m fine, the problem isn’t the Booze it’s the weak person that cannot control it. Keep it up Gaz ❤
I don't drink because my father is a chronic alcoholic. He has had numerous wake up calls that he didn't heed. I now accept that I cannot change the fact that he will drink himself to death. I am proud of you for listening to your wakeup call. Be grateful that you had that terrible fall. That fall has saved you and your family. Wishing you all the best. Don't let your guard down. Keep going your doing great!
I am pretty sure that my Family thought the same about me. But I changed at 44, and ironically am literally the 'Don' of my Family. Oldest Living member.
Congratulations ❤ I totally salute you and your strength My daughter is 550 days sober today. She smiles big smiles, that come from within her, truly amazing to see, and feel.
I used to drink 2 bottles of whiskey a day, every day. It was so difficult getting sober, from that (and pills), but I’m doing it and have been for several years. Keep going!!! Mark.
Day 22 for me! Congrats on the big 30! I have found that the better I feel the more I am tempted to go back... but I know this. Don't believe the lie that says you can pick it back up for a bit. I have fell for that one many times... A made up mind is a powerful thing. I tell myself: I lack nothing. I have everything I need. God bless you and all. you love.
👍 you have your life back Gareth there’s so much more to life than drinking, you have a family, I have grandchildren I want to see then grow be proud of yourself 😊
I'd say around 22 years for me. In my younger years I used to be a proper nightmare drinker lol Never a casual drink always a binge! A functioning alcoholic i was labelled, I'd get hammered a few times through the week but always roll up for work early and get it done. But it all caught up with me and my wallet, I started slowing right down and then just stopped.. And that was that! 22 years and counting of complete zero booze.
5+ years sober. I still think about it all the time - How great I feel. I don't think I'll ever not realize the contrast between a body with vs. a body without alcohol. Keep it going, sir!!!
Right. I gave up alcohol for 6 months and after about 3 months the obvious health improvements and generally feeling better stopped. Felt like I could have a drink...
Exactly!! I thought I could test out Heineken Zero that I had gotten used to for 3 months and did a purely scientific test and bought 1 bottle of real Heineken to try them side by side after 3 months which is the first and longest time without alcohol for the first time in over 21 years! It tasted like chemicals/methylated spirits!! Before I knew it I was back drinking again...still doing it now.....
@Defensive_Wounds Well, what I'd say is, don't think about yesterday. Leave yesterday, where it should be and start again as if it never existed. Don't even think of tomorrow. Only now that counts. However long you stop for, will benefit your overall health.
I "struggled" mightily for many years. Then one day, when I could no longer live with the guy in the mirror, I completely surrendered. That was the moment my recovery began. From that day forward, the "struggle" was OVER! My focus shifted from "struggling" to "not drink", to changing ME...the ROOT PROBLEM. The more I worked to change ME, the less alcohol was a part of my consciousness. Otherwise known as "FREEDOM".✌
I agree. 👍. 20 years in the Military and then many years as a Publican? Boozing was just a part of my life. I'm now 71 and I no longer drink like I used to. I was " tea total " for about 5 years. It was a struggle, but I stuck with it. Now I have the odd drink at social events. But now I control the drink. The drink no longer controls me. I've lost weight, I've reduced my waistline and now I feel like I'm back into a healthy, fit life.
Fair play to you mate. I binge drink myself, I could go for one month, two months without a drink, then I'd go and get hammered everyday for a week or two. Absolute madness.
One of the most important jobs you will ever have is being a dad,a dad that is present and 100% reliable and your being that, remember you only get one go at this, well done, great start.😊
I wish you could go on national television with this Gareth, I think you might be just inspiring a lot of people, Your journey is a true one. Please keep the updates coming and great to see you fighting this. All the best of luck. From Gerry and Susan from Scotland.
Exactly as I felt after giving up. It's been 19 years now since I give up and don't miss it one bit. I have the utmost confidence you can do this. Congrats Gareth.
As your body cleans itself of the booze, you will start to fell better, happier and more clear headed, as you are no longer poisoning yourself, so enjoy this as it is your bodies way of saying thank you. ;)
Well done my friend, I had this epiphany about 15 years ago, I just stopped one night after coming back from a gig, I'm a magician and used to have a fair few drinks after the nights entertainment, I have a similar path to the one you are on, it does dip a bit, because the reason you were having a drink always comes back. I hope you keep up the challenge, you sound as if you will, I take my hat off to you, it's a tough old game, and sometimes you will wonder why you are doing it, and that's when you have to be strong, I didn't have a drink problem, I wasn't an alcoholic, but I needed to stop, with me there were no half measures, all or bugger all, that's me. if I wanted a drink now, I would have one, but I keep thinking that I would have to reset the clock again, and I'm not sure that I could do it again. I know you aren't going back on this, but all the same you have my admiration and best wishes for what lies ahead. Cheers Gareth ,this is a very important video, but aren't they all. !
Keep counting Gareth because it’s important. But mate you’ve never cracked it. This is a life long journey. Stay alert. That’s why I admire people on this journey only they and others know how hard it can be. You need to remember what was the trigger and ensure you prepare for it. Some it’s feeling depressed, others it’s when they’re happy. All different. Or it becomes, just one won’t hurt I’ve got this cracked. Like me and cheese I’m allergic too. Gave myself a real dose of gut ache at Christmas thinking just a small piece. Arrrgggghhhh. Congratulations 🥳 you’re helping others sharing your story.
Smiling from ear to ear at this update (probably looking a little bit mad 😂) Well done! 30 days is a big milestone, and may there be many more to come 💪🏼 Great to see you feeling so positive Gaz, and good luck at the hospital 😊 And for anyone else on the sober journey, this stranger is rooting for you, too 🙏🏼
Don’t speak too soon mate, I gave up for 4 months and relapsed, just missed sitting in a beer garden with the mrs. Can’t seem to get back in the mindset again to go tea total
Congrats Gareth 30 days and counting. Fantastic news! You look fantastic by the way. 💪🏻 I’m the daughter of an alcoholic father. I’ve never felt much desire for booze, I’ll possibly have a glass of wine with food. Never desire a second glass. ❤ All the very best to you and yours.
It’s so lovely to see you looking so well and being so positive. My husband is on this journey with you. Your words of encouragement are greatly appreciated 😊

Well done, a whole month already. I know some people say not to count the days, but if it works for you, that is what you do - aw, heck, if it helps to count your toes, do that too! Don’t worry if you get difficult days in the future, everyone gets those, for all sorts of reasons, not just alcohol, but you will get over them, honestly. I bet the Good Lady and the Young Ladies are glad to see the new you. All the best to all of you. 😊 Edit: oops, forgot to say, good luck for Thursday 🤞
I think its a good idea to count daily!! You are going to have days when you wobble, but thats only to be expected.... Keep up the good work, just remember you are doing it for yourself and you WILL succeed!! xx
I quit for 5 month. life was wonderful. thought I'd try a cheeky one and, well, that's 18 months ago and today's my first day off the bloody stuff again. do not let your guard down!
Keep on going man - I didn’t think I needed to quit but starting to realise how I much I rely on alcohol to have a good time. I too struggle to know when to stop when I’ve started and I know if I keep on it can and will get bad.
In my early days of stopping alcohol I just remind myself of all the stupid things and wasted money and time I did when drinking. Stay strong and keep up the good work. At least you have your looks back now ha ha ha.
You're doing amazing Gareth! Stay strong, never look back. Hope all goes well with maxillofacial. It's my favourite time of the day, early morning, before anyone wakes. It's time for me to sit quietly with a cuppa & listen to the birdsong & plan my day. It's so good to hear you've found a way to unwind & contemplate life. We're all wishing you well. Stay positive 👍
Keep it going. I’m 2 years T Total now and still miss it occasionally. but I don’t put myself into situations where I’m tempted to drink again. I’ve just come off morphine after 9 months. Been slowly weening off it for 4 weeks. Im on day 3 without and starting to feel better. No sweats runny nose of stomach cramps now. Addiction is a very serious problem and wish everyone success in their own journey.
1, redefine Alcohol as 'Class A' drug, realise you are actually a drug Addict, then there is a new Mindset about Alcohol.( 25 years sober, 7 years since methadone myself)
Congrats mate. That the first thong I noticed was getting up early and seeing the day arrive. Best feeling ever just sitting there in the stillness, and not getting up in the afternoon hung over.
Way to go!! Keep it up and keep counting every day. I'm so proud of you and I'm so thrilled to hear you talk about the birds in the morning. Life is precious and can be absolutely beautiful. I decided to quit drinking a long time ago, and I enjoy the world around me so much more. Thanks for sharing your experience, and please keep sharing; your progress can help others, and having us all watching you can help you. Take good care and love from Canada ✌️ 🇨🇦 ❤
Keep going, Gareth. There will be times which are more difficult, more tempting. But you have the strength… stick with it. Use every bit of support you can get.
Keep going Gareth, i am 13 days sober today, withdrawal symptoms have gone and like you i feel good and dont want to drink. I am never going to put that poison in my body again 😊
Your first month milestone passed. Well done Gareth. Sounds like you have pushed through that wall. Keep going. I bet your family are proud of you as we all are. SMASH IT👊
Complacency is your worst enemy, dont get overconfident. You are doing really well. Congratulations. Make sure you reward yourself, for example, a new book, cd/dvd, a piece of clothing, whatever floats your boat. That way, you have something other than booze to look forward to, and being sober will feel less like a chore. WELL DONE
Keep reminding yourself of how much better you feel, you're doing wonderfully well. Don't ever let complacency creep in, keep reminding yourself of the reason you stopped. You're back in control. Remain there, be really f"cking stubborn. Best wishes fella.
It's been six months for me, feeling grateful, happier and healthier, but constantly aware how easy it could be to be back in that dark place, stay strong
The amount of wasted days spent ill after being on the piss is what I regret most personally. Wasted time in the prime of life is criminal. Well done so far and best of luck to you.👍
Congrats mate, that’s brilliant. Be careful though as once you think you’ve cracked it sometimes your mind starts to wander trying to make you think you can just have the one. Don’t fall for it. All the very best.
Well done Gareth I've done 7 years now it's like I've never drank I'm 62 now don't miss it a bit I find it quite funny to watch people drink can't see any sense in it now you stay strong take one day at a time don't look for excuses to re start best wishes !! 👍👍🏴🦊
Count those days! You work hard for each one of them! Dont let down your guard! Its in times like these that the little devil in your head will try to convince you that you can get away with a drink. Remember why you quit. Reflect upon the bad times, it'll help keep you on the right path when you're feeling tempted.
For me it was the change from thinking "I can't drink, not allowed" to "I can drink if I want to but I don't want to". Taking responsibility and having my own strength. No matter what works best for you I wish you success and happiness.
Always remeber Gareth, the feelings you feel are only temporary. There will be up's and downs, it's all part of the journey. Scott, 4 years alcohol free.
You'll get to the point where you're subconscious stops planting seeds and you'll go days and weeks without thinking about booze. I've got a wine rack full of decent bottles and my Son left some tinnies in the fridge before he went away again and I look at it every day, but I don't see it anymore and just go straight to the kettle or the water cooler !! Keep it going mate. We are all proud of you and we're in this together. 👊🏻👌🏻😉
I made 2 Gallons of wine in August 98, 2 months before I stopped Drinking. I had to put Sodium Metabisulfite in it last year, because it never stopped fermenting. It will be 26 years old this coming October, and is about 14%. I have kept it all these years as a Test of my Sobriety, and it's for my Wake. 69 y.o. and counting.
Well done Gareth keep it up, I gave up the heavy drinking 3 years ago after my 65th birthday, I have the occasional single malt now and again but like you my issue was the binge drinking, feel so much better now I stopped that.
That's great news Gareth. You can do this !! Well done mate !! I stopped drinking alcohol, 8 months today after 50+ years, similar reasons. I can relate to your feeling better and just sitting in the garden relaxing as you said. You are well on the way to getting sorted. Thanks for your updates, you are also helping so many others along the way. We are all with you Gareth. Take Care !!
Keep going! Yes like you say when you get off the high, thats the testing point. But you can do this. All the best with the hospital. Love to your family.❤❤❤❤
You're blessed in the fact you've got a thriving channel with a lot of support here, and also in respect of the fact you seem to have a stable and happy home life. This journey should be a doddle for you. :)
Everyday counts, everyday matters, keep counting mate let those days pile up so you can see them. Since your feeling good don't let that blessing go to waste! Many many people do not get that and can't make it as far as you are. Be mindful of things you would do while drinking, having a BBQ, watching the game etc. You may have to put those things off or walk a away from them for a bit. Prayers are with you my friend.
Similar thing happened to me on the 25th of May after Celtic and Rangers game, fell over pished broke my ribs and smashed all my face in. Wake up call so knocked 20 years of binge drinking on the head. Just over a month off it now and as you say, the weekends seem so much more fullfilled now, spending more time with my kids rather than sat drinking cans then riding hangovers. It's no life to be living a complete waste! Good luck in your journey pal
Well done Gareth, you're already looking a lot better I must say, you've even got a really healthy looking complexion. Keep it up, we know you can do it. 👍🏻
Well done mate. I’ve just done 5 weeks, then got really drunk on Saturday for a friend’s birthday/the football. Have felt terrible for 2 days and panicking about whether my behaviour was ok or not! Did 3 months at the end of last year and yeah there’s not really any downsides of it! Annoying how something can creep back in even though it makes you feel so bad! Also really found I appreciated the details in life as well, birds in the garden etc. Sober is king I think especially now I’m turning 40 😵💫
I’m 24, never been addicted to alcohol, for me it was cannabis. I was a heavy heavy user, smoking daily since 16, only 8 years but enough to do a lot of damage let’s just say. Was addicted to the bong side of things. Never thought I’d be able to quit as soon as I did. Only been sober 3 months but will not be going back. Maybe have a celebratory spliff in the future who knows. We’re all going through different kinds of addictions. Well in Gareth, keep it up m8.
Can fully relate to this Gaz, I quit the booze 2 years ago now and I’m only 36 but was the best thing I ever did! Achieved so much in the small space of time quitting so never looked back. All the best pal
Huge congratulations 30 days is massive and your video updates are inspirational to many many people. I bet your family are very proud of you too, and love having you present at weekends and not lying in bed trying to get over a hangover. Keep going. We are ALL right beside you on this journey 💕💕 Xx

Well done 👏
Keep going, lad. Remember, one drink is too many and a hundred not enough. You’re doing fantastically well, Gareth, so proud of you x
Well done. I really love the updates. Most of us are interested in you as a human being now - not just if baked beans are any good.
Well done Gareth stay positive
You haven't cracked anything, don't let the mind decive you already
I'm 64 now and I always feel sh1te for 3 or 4 days after a Friday night binge. Gone are the days when I feel ok by 10.00 the following morning.
I am super proud of you. I want you to keep posting this good news regularly. 🤗
Keep on going man - I didn’t think I needed to quit but starting to realise how I much I rely on alcohol to have a good time.
I too struggle to know when to stop when I’ve started and I know if I keep on it can and will get bad.
Good on ya Gareth. Im two and a half yeas in now hangover free. Easy peasy.😃
Well done pal
My message is you are fighting a much bigger fight so all the best you are important you are loved by all in the rehab community well done
Well done my friend, you are doing really well. Keep going and know that we are all with you x
1, redefine Alcohol as 'Class A' drug, realise you are actually a drug Addict, then there is a new Mindset about Alcohol.( 25 years sober, 7 years since methadone myself)
Well done Man! Be proud, and keep doing what you're doing.
I appreciate it!
Well done Gareth. X
I can't wait to see your 2 month, 4 month, half a year, year! It's going to be inspirational and I have every faith in you!
Absolutely Great Comment ❤
Fingers crossed!
Congrats mate. That the first thong I noticed was getting up early and seeing the day arrive. Best feeling ever just sitting there in the stillness, and not getting up in the afternoon hung over.
You're right it's great isn't it
Thank you so much!!
Well done Gareth, amazing to be speaking about it on TH-cam to help others 👏
Thank you
Keep going, Gareth.
Well done 👏
Excellent! Well done to you. Onwards and upwards Gareth. 👍🏻
Thanks 👍
I'm so happy for you!!!
Keep buggering on.😊
Your first month milestone passed. Well done Gareth.
Sounds like you have pushed through that wall.
Keep going.
I bet your family are proud of you as we all are. SMASH IT👊
Brilliant Gareth, keep going.
Cheers Sly
Well done Gareth. Everything you say makes sense. It's great to hear.
Count the days - you’ve earned them!!
Be proud of yourself!!
Nearly 6 years sober now. I don’t EVER want to go back to it.
🏆🏆🏆
Thank you
I often watch the sun coming up, listening to The Byrds. Great band .
Well done Gareth I've done 7 years now it's like I've never drank I'm 62 now don't miss it a bit I find it quite funny to watch people drink can't see any sense in it now you stay strong take one day at a time don't look for excuses to re start best wishes !! 👍👍🏴🦊
Well done G! You’re playing a blinder, all the best!
What a blessing you are giving your children & family. One day at a time… each day counts. 💜
Keep going mate, try not to keep counting, just forget about drinking, it's in the past,
Count those days! You work hard for each one of them! Dont let down your guard! Its in times like these that the little devil in your head will try to convince you that you can get away with a drink. Remember why you quit.
Reflect upon the bad times, it'll help keep you on the right path when you're feeling tempted.
I've learnt that one day at a time is the best way to go forward. Well done to you on your journey
Every day alcohol-free is a victory. There's nothing wrong with counting victories!🙂
Just remember, you're only human. It's ok to feel the urge, and it's ok to struggle to deal with it. Just be strong, hour by hour, day by day.
For me it was the change from thinking "I can't drink, not allowed" to "I can drink if I want to but I don't want to". Taking responsibility and having my own strength. No matter what works best for you I wish you success and happiness.
Good thinking
Always remeber Gareth, the feelings you feel are only temporary. There will be up's and downs, it's all part of the journey.
Scott, 4 years alcohol free.
I'm an old granma so I can say this. Your skin looks a lot better, I noticed a while back that it was beginning to look ropy.
No Alcohol. Clear Eyes, Better Skin, less Brittle Bones, due to Alcohol leaching Vitamin C, better looking and feeling Hair, etc.
Hell yeah! Keep up the good work, brother!
@@paulthomas3889 👊🏻👏🏻
Cheers Richard well done too mate 👍
Keep going! Yes like you say when you get off the high, thats the testing point. But you can do this. All the best with the hospital. Love to your family.❤❤❤❤
Well done Gareth keep up the good work. Remember one day at a time on your journey, there will be temptations but stay positive.
You're blessed in the fact you've got a thriving channel with a lot of support here, and also in respect of the fact you seem to have a stable and happy home life. This journey should be a doddle for you. :)
I appreciate that
I gave up as a new year resolution this year...still going.
So, so good to hear how positive you feel! Great update 👍👍👍🎉🎉
Thank you!! 😊
Well done mate, keep it up 💪💪💪
Well done Gareth, you're already looking a lot better I must say, you've even got a really healthy looking complexion. Keep it up, we know you can do it. 👍🏻
Cheers James
Well done mate. I’ve just done 5 weeks, then got really drunk on Saturday for a friend’s birthday/the football. Have felt terrible for 2 days and panicking about whether my behaviour was ok or not! Did 3 months at the end of last year and yeah there’s not really any downsides of it! Annoying how something can creep back in even though it makes you feel so bad!
Also really found I appreciated the details in life as well, birds in the garden etc. Sober is king I think especially now I’m turning 40 😵💫
Well done
I’m 24, never been addicted to alcohol, for me it was cannabis. I was a heavy heavy user, smoking daily since 16, only 8 years but enough to do a lot of damage let’s just say. Was addicted to the bong side of things. Never thought I’d be able to quit as soon as I did. Only been sober 3 months but will not be going back. Maybe have a celebratory spliff in the future who knows. We’re all going through different kinds of addictions. Well in Gareth, keep it up m8.
Really proud of you Gareth.
Well done mate it’s a bloody tough path you are on but I reckon you have cracked it, I gave up the booze five years ago and I’ve never felt so good
Can fully relate to this Gaz, I quit the booze 2 years ago now and I’m only 36 but was the best thing I ever did! Achieved so much in the small space of time quitting so never looked back. All the best pal
Cheers pal well done
Huge congratulations 30 days is massive and your video updates are inspirational to many many people. I bet your family are very proud of you too, and love having you present at weekends and not lying in bed trying to get over a hangover. Keep going. We are ALL right beside you on this journey 💕💕 Xx
Hi thank you
Keep up the good work my friend. Stay strong and days will become months, months will be years. Good luck.
That's the plan!
Well done and keep going! You’ll feel more amazing with each passing day 😊
