A very wise man once told me "Everyone has to climb fools' mountain. Some it takes a lifetime to get over it and some never make it." He was a recovering alcoholic, a legendary pool shark, and a successful race car driver. Knowing there is a mountain in front of you is the first realization. Then the true work can begin, and you cannot climb it for anyone else but yourself. Best of luck to you. It sounds as if you are finally at that crossroads where you know that you know you must change. You can do it. I did and know many others who have done the same.

I once rescued a stray 70 year old who was so drunk he fell right through bushes. All that could be seen was one shoe sticking out of the bottom of the bush. At first I drove right past but caught sight in the corner of my eye so I went back expecting a corpse but he was drunk. I picked him up to his profuse apologies for being "slightly tipsy" (he was wankered) and stuck at an angle where he couldn't find anything to pull himself up. I offered him a lift home but he dusted off his old tweed jacket and went on his merry way.

Hedge wedges are a never ending obstacle when you're off your t.t's and live in the countryside with big wild hedges. I have wrestled with these bastards many times. It's not pulling yourself up that's the real problem, it's trying to push yourself out because inevitably you go further and further down into the hedge as you usually have nothing to get purchase on. The twigs and small branches of the hedge that have not already snapped when you fell, certainly do when you push down on them to get out. If you fall in forwards there's hope, even if you have to crawl out backward and take severe damage to the knees, but when you go in backwards, which always seemed to be the butter side of the toast for me, that's when you have real problems. If it's a really quiet lane you can be in there for hours, it's nice though, you can have a good think about your life choices while staring up at the stars, so long as it doesn't rain. Ahh the memories. I'm 73 now and into bed with a mug of hot milk by 2am 😉

It wasn't until I was in my 40s that I accidentally drank too much (it was a dinner party where the food was inedible and so there was nothing to mop up the alcohol). I felt fine but then found the entire story about feeling the effects was true when the fresh air hits you can be true. Out in the night air everything afterwards became a blank. Not only is running the BEST defense tool but anything that raises your heartbeat to the level that you get a little out of breath is healthy for your body and mind! Be it walking, jogging or running (or some other type of sport). Not only that but exercising releases feel good hormones such as dopamine and other chemicals in our brain, which makes us not only happier but also gives us energy! This is why many people choose to do some sport activity before work to get them by the day much easier. But this all needs to be done in moderation of course. Too much running for example can be detrimental for health.

I don't understand why anyone would want to be drunk they are unable to walk, are vulnerable enough to end up into a river or get run over. People do drown, as a woman I don't want to get drunk, I could get taken advantage off, get attacked, spiked, robbed. I like to have my wits about me for survival purposes. being drink means you are very vulnerable to anything. I just don't understand why getting drunk is fun, it doesn't sound fun to me at all.

I've been there-twice! Once tripping and (with arms flailing) smashed (face first) into a concrete wall with the result that I looked like you do now - I needed stitches. Fortunately, an off-duty nurse helped me on my feet, I was trying to drag myself up on my car bonnet. Required hospital treatment. The second time (a couple of years later) I tripped in a Sainsbury's car park and it was identical to the one above, but with more blood and a busted nose. The store manager and staff were marvellous, put me in a wheelchair and got me to hospital. It was more or less like the previous fall. I was pushing eighty then. Anyway Gareth, might be a good idea to have a check-up with your GP. Get well soon.
