During our trip to the Missouri Botanical Garden, we had a chance to speak with the King of Aroids-Dr. Tom Croat. There, we asked the expert himself, to help us elucidate how we may be able to tell apart tricky aroids, such as Epipremnum, Monstera, Rhaphidophora, and Scindapsus. The answers aren't as straightforward as we thought!
A MUST WATCH for those who consider themselves true plant nerds or aspiring plant nerds.

That was incredibly thought-provoking! With his life's work Dr Croat has certainly delved deep into the fundamental building blocks of plants. From your conversations with him it seems that, at a certain level of microscopic analysis, the classification of plants into their 'correct' binomial categories can easily become dauntingly labyrinthine! The topics raised get me interested in how plants have evolved over millennia, slowly adapting/adjusting to their changing climatic environments. Returning a little more to the domestic, I now don't know whether I have a Monstera adansonii or M. epipremnoides, as it's still quite juvenile with only minimal fenestrations (time will tell!).

Thank you Summer Rayne for getting this! Thank YOU Dr Croat for educating us even if it is just scratching the surface of your knowledge! I looked specifically for videos of you Dr Croat after the last video of Summer Rayne at your greenhouses - few videos of you. 😐 So this is great! Just wish I could listen to you and Collette , or even help out. My other half was a volcanologist who'd spent parts of the 70s and 80s working in Central & South America - oh the stories he had to tell! I suspect you, Dr Croats are as much the storyteller when in your millue! Thank you both again!!!!

I loved the depth in which you were both able to speak about botany/taxonomy and, more generally, the many nuances within plant identification. I'm interested in what you discussed but I also studied something completely different in school- I often feel out of my depth when learning about plants and I question my ability to identify good source material. It's difficult to parse (online) information despite my desire to become better informed. That's all to say that I greatly enjoy this sort of content and thank you a lot for creating it!

This is incredible! The info I pick up every single time from your channel especially with your garden tours and interviews with reputable people in the industry is invaluable and is what I love the most from watching your channel. Here, we go beyond the aesthetics and rarity of plants, moreso truly develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of plants and of our nature. I wish you can do another 365 days with all the new species that made it into the houseplant world, and even those we can readily see the moment we step out of our house. ;) More power to you!

Loved the topic of natural hybrids, ploidy and aneuploidism. It’s actually really common in orchid hybridization as well-but also including limitations of chromosome size. Really loved the technical nature of this-we as a hobby need more technical conversations “made simple” just like the two of you have done in this video. So great!

This was a very pleasant surprise on the channel! I sometimes watch these videos leisurely before going to bed but this was a lot more engaging than what Ive gotten used to coming from this channel and I'd watch this type of ''under the skin'' content every day! Even though I do know some botany, I can't always put the proper words on my observations; for example how I could tell that an Anthurium's leaf nervation had something very characteristic to it that allows me to distinguish it from other genus but I couldn't exactly pinpoint and name it before watching this video. I'm really hoping for more videos like this! Please, bring back botany!

An incredible video with one of the greatest minds of the Araceae world. It was so fascinating to hear them being spoken about at this in depth, scientific level. I would love if there could be a follow up video at maybe a more hobbyist friendly level that went through the very literal morphological differences of the family, say for example Alocasia vs. Xanthosoma, and/or possibly differences within the same genus (such as Anthurium that was lightly touched on at the beginning of the video), as that is what I was hoping for from reading the title. Nevertheless a great interview that I have garnered much new knowledge from 🌱✨
