  • 🤖 Ever dreamed of a robot that folds your laundry, mows the lawn, and even walks the dog? Meet the Tesla Bot, also known as Optimus. But will it steal your job? Can it handle real tasks? In this video, we separate the hype from reality.
    ----
Tesla Bot, or Optimus, is a bipedal humanoid robot designed to look like a human and handle tasks humans might not want to do. Standing at 5'8" and weighing 125 pounds, Optimus can carry up to 45 pounds. It’s equipped with Tesla’s autopilot cameras and Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, allowing it to navigate and perform tasks autonomously.
Safety is a priority, with sensors and AI monitoring its surroundings. Optimus can make decisions, adapt to changes, and work efficiently in various environments.
Optimus aims to automate repetitive and hazardous tasks in industries like manufacturing and logistics, potentially replacing some human jobs but also creating opportunities in robotics and AI fields.
    ----
Optimus was announced at Tesla's AI Day in 2021. By 2023, Tesla showcased its evolving capabilities, and in 2024, introduced the Optimus Generation with enhanced features. Elon Musk envisions these robots in homes, performing tasks like cooking and lawn care, with a price under $20,000. While Optimus may ship by 2025, extensive testing is required.

No, not locally. Almost no androids have the on-board processing power for a large language model, so they offload that compute to a server. One of the biggest advantages to Optimums is the dedicated hardware. Boston Dynmics has a neural net, but it's mostly used to fine tune interactions that are per-scripted. Spot, the dog robot, costs 80k. Tesla is able to leverage the hardware they use for their cars and because they sold millions of those cars, the cost for each computer falls dramatically with economies of scale.
Nvidia's CEO believes Tesla's solutions are the most elegant and well thought out... but he may be biased because they are one of Nvidia's biggest customers.
Tesla currently has the 3rd largest supercomputer in the world. Not bad for "just car company".
