I actually got to meet one of my dear mentors, Ken Kesey at a Grateful Dead show (of course) at Eugene Oregon. I was like "No WAY!" after having read the Electric Kool Aid Acid Test, and pretty much tripping balls daily at the time. I was a nobody little grommet, but Ken Kesey treated me so genuinely kind, as I can see that he treated everyone. He listened to my self made psychedelic music on my walk-man and all! The definition of kind! This energy is SO missing today.
I love this man with everything I got. Every fiber of my soul. Such a beautiful guy. Thank you for everything. I loved you so much. I always will. You showed me so much about myself, I just wanna cry now. Thank you, All of you, you know who you are.... we all do, we'll never forget the love you all brought. ✌️💙❤️🎸🎸🌏🚌🎺🎷🥁🎹🎼🌈💥⚡️🔥🌹🌸🌺🍄🍄🍄🌏🌍🌎💫🌷🌹🌺🌻🌼🍄

Zane! What an incredible talk by your Dad. He was so ahead of his time in terms of his cultural sentiments. I had the privilege of making a light friendship with him for the last three years of his life. He was always so warm and open when it came to sharing time and thoughts. He let me sleep in the barn near the new bus. I am so grateful for his influence on my life. He gave me the right pointing out instructions as a young man.
When I was in 11th grade (in 2002), I had a part-time job, and I worked every Sunday evening. I always got home at about 11.30 or 12 at night, and for some reason, this exact video was always playing on the local public TV station. Since then, I've never been able to get hold of the video. Thanks for putting it up.
Beautiful hour. I enjoyed this very much. I loved KK's writing so seeing him live telling stories is priceless. Good medicine. What he touched grew and came to life. Good stuff, thanks.

Wise men are getting harder to come by as we age, yet here luckily we have a wise man, a Captain of Experience, captured on video sharing his insights. After watching his interviews that are available it becomes clear we just need to let him speak his peace, unfettered by the usual stock questions.
Thank you for sharing this. He's a beautiful human being. If we had more human beings like him the whole world would be a great place to live in. Every thing he said are true facts. The way he put it in his words makes 100% sense. Right on ❤️
Ken really was one of the good guys , and this talk is very powerful still today , I don't think Ken would like at all how stuff has changed even just since this talk . I like to watch this from time to time. I had a crappy childhood in many fundamental ways, but reading first Kerouac, then Tom Wolf's book, and reading about the Pranksters and anything I could get my hands on way back then about these weirdos out west gave me a sort of path, toward my people and hope for a much more beautiful future. What a man!!! What an intellect. Fortunately for all of us he was born at the right time. Just imagine the people he has had to throw ideas and thoughts to, as well as the people who have been able to throw thoughts and ideas back to him. He truly is a pioneer of the free thinking "out of the box" way to look at life. Planning for success usually brings failure, not planning anything allows a person to solve the problems at hand in a more successful manner. Not being roped into a set of behaviors with stringent rules that need to be adhered too frees up the individual with more flexibility to solve problems or bring forth solutions that may solve the problems or create better avenues that never would have occurred had the strict tightly controlled well practiced response been followed. Ken was a leader who didn't lead, yet his ideas have led a generation of intellects whom are followed. We all miss you dearly Ken yet your light grows brighter by the hour.
Great to see this! I saw him at a UofLouisville literary conference in the late 80’s. So wise and funny. What a surprise to hear him recite “Tricker the Squirrel meets Big Double Bear”. And I remember he had a Grateful Dead water bottle on the podium. Fond memory!

"Grief will do it . . ." When Kesey's son Jed died in a bus accident in 1984, it devastated him -- those who knew him well said it almost killed him. He carried on, kept writing, probably began drinking a little heavier than before (which didn't help the liver that eventually did kill him), but it also deepened him. There's a tinge of hard-won knowingness beneath even his most joyful and Prankster-ish actions, writings, speeches, and public appearances in the years since then.It also deepened his compassion and his wisdom. A good friend of mine, whose own son committed suicide in the '70, established a deep bond with Kesey -- when she finally went to visit him in his home in Oregon, she was going through a very dark period of flashback grief -- he offered her the opportunity to spend the night sleeping in Jed's old bed -- communing with his spirit, so to speak -- which might sound morbid or bizarre, but on some intuitive level he knew that this was exactly what she needed. She said that she woke up healed the next morning.
I have been called unconventional, weird, eccentric, you can add to the list. but I've always been on the highway following the sun. people like Ken Kesey helped shape my mind as a kid. I read a lot. Music helps, too. Music, books, with soul, meaning, heart.LSD? Started at 15. Quit at 28. Every time I ever dosed it was a spiritual experience, even when I had a lot of bad shit happen out of nowhere while I was wiggin balls I could hear the Great Spirit saying, "everything's gonna be alright."I thank the Great Spirit every day and night I am one of Us. We are rare. We are a people of substance. We are minimal. We are strong. And, those of us old enough to know the shit they are calling acid today is probably battery acid and shoe polish are smart enough to do the Great Spirit's gift to cow shit. Peace to all Brothers and Sisters. Ps Don't eat the brown acid.
David, weird question, was he a drink a night guy or getting plowed, also, is it me or is it like all the sudden guys him never existed? I saw the remaining members of the foors about 10 years back, Ray Maznerak the keyboardist gave a stark warning to the crowd, "these times are like the 1950s all over again." That sticks with me all the time. I saw an elderly pot smoker thrown out of the concert forcefully because some square did not like his kids seeing it. I almost puked from the disgust of seeing this.
You can tell how many seeds there are in an apple, but you'll never know how many apples there are in a seed. Ken taught a lot of people and I feel I owe him too much to mention.
