    Hi Rusty I just came across your video lessons yesterday. I am 76 years old and picked up the guitar five six years ago as an educator. I played guitar back in the late fifties and sixties in a couple of rock bands but did not know what I was doing. I have been taking many online lessons from several good instructors, and I am beginning to feel confident as it relates to lead but finding your video on triads and hitting the root notes in each note turned on a light bulb for me. Thank you for doing this. I will be watching more as I continue my journey.

      This is a great comment for me to read Harold! Thanks so much! It’s exciting when we hear and see things that connect on the fretboard. Really glad you got something from the lesson. I appreciate the comment and enjoy the rest of your week.👍

    Good one. I will have to watch these videos over and over again many times to start to absorb something, so I will be back again later to watch it again when I have time and energy to pick up the guitar and practice it. My love for guitar is on a higher level than my playing ability, but I do hope to get better.

    Thanks rusty the triads are a massive help known we’re they are and getting to know the notes on the fretboard better which is the secret!! There’s no easy way to do that except study them or write them down or do watever works for you !! Thanks great lesson !! Brian Ireland 🇮🇪

    Love your looper groove. Triads are a cool way to target the chord tones. Plus, helps you work on triads in general. 2 birds, 1 stone. Be fun for me if you added a bit of distortion and cover a blues rock sound using this method, in.addition to the country blues. Happy New Year to you Rusty!

    Exactly what the doc ordered! many thanks Rusty 👍 I always watch your lessons, my choice of style in expression on guitar, using chord tones, triads- I'm getting some more under my belt every day almost. And thanks to you for making it understandable. Sometimes I can see where these shapes of the triads and the pentatonic scales in tge numbered boxes are all conected, the guitar is the ultimate instrument for expression and inspiration once i learn a new way to shape each chird in a chord progression, truly believe these are deliberately layed out in standard tuning way more than i first began, and never get bored to the point of giving up because there are so many gems of insight to find.

    Rusty--- this is another fantastic lesson!! What I love about you is you are one of the most melodic guitar teachers. I've seen you play fast and you can rip as good as most anybody but the thing I know you love the most is making really beautiful melodies, beautiful rock melodies. In other words, making real music not just finger gymnastics, I've been trying to understand the major pentatonic for a long time and these triads are great not just the triads but the way you put them together Thank you for teaching us your tricks and your licks!!!
    All these lessons that are out there promise to help "open up the fretboard" and I am an intermediate player (hopefully beyond beginner-intermediate but not sure LOL) and I've learned that there's not just one thing that will open up the fretboard.... but there are certainly Aha moments and over the time as we learn the fretboard, it does start to open up. This was definitely a big one for me. Because I have been trying to get more in touch with major scale/major pentatonic because I know that's where a lot of the beautiful melodies and juice and flavor come from in music. You have really helped me man and I greatly appreciate your amazing work, you are a great, great teacher!! You are not into gimmicks and you seem very selfless to me.

    • @rustysguitar1
      @rustysguitar1  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Paul, once you can see the notes on the fretboard, things start to make sense. Then you will start to see groups of notes. Melody lines, triads, arpeggios, etc.. Sounds like you’re working on the right things! Keep rockin! Talk to you soon 👍

      Is this a 4 5 1 progression rusty?

    • @rustysguitar1
      @rustysguitar1  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@paulkelly6853 actually it’s E mixolydian. So that would make it 1-7-4. Those same three chords starting on the A chord would make it a 1-4-5. Really can be confusing. I’m pretty confident that Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and B.B. King did not look at modes on the guitar. They simply use the structure of the major and minor pentatonic scales and just played from the heart. I know that’s a long answer. The more theory, you know, the better all-around player you will be, but don’t let it get in the way from having fun and playing from the heart! I appreciate the comment Paul greetings always from the USA.👍

    • @paulkelly6853
      @paulkelly6853 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Rusty I was thinking 1 7 4 at first then said that's a strange progression( although strange not impossible) so thought then maybe 4 5 1 ......thanks for clearing this up...........I don't really want to go down the rabbit whole too much on this cos I find talking about scales outside pentatonic confusing...........does it matter too much if I don't know this?

    • @rustysguitar1
      @rustysguitar1  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s why I like using one central scale, and then adding the notes of the chords to that scale. You are playing modes when you do that, but it seems simpler to me. Talk to you soon Paul.👍

      @rustysguitar1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks T-Rocket! Sorry I don’t use tabs. I really believe if you have your guitar in your hand, and use your ear this stuff will sink deep into your soul. I’ve seen so many players rely on tams for years, and it hinders them from really being able to improvise. Most of my lessons are just starting points to have a player find their own guitar voice. I hope you keep watching and learning from the lessons. I will try to slow things down and make Things more visible. Thanks so much for the comment and have a great week.👍

    Really great lesson to see all the triads in the same general area if the fretboard. Quick question. What would that progression be called?
    For example 1 4 5 or ?

    • @rustysguitar1
      @rustysguitar1  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not to get too complicated but it’s in the key of E mixolydian. Which would make it 1-7-4. However, those three chords can be built with the A major scale. We are just starting on the fifth degree (fifth note of the scale). To simplify things you can look at it with the E major pentatonic, and then adding a few notes from those chords. Hopefully this helps. Thanks so much mojo for the comment.👍

    Hi Rusty. Thanks a lot for this instructive video, it's very useful!
    I got a bit confused with one point while practising the ideas you talk about here.
    Emaj, Dmaj & Amaj all belong to the scale of Amaj. So I would be inclined to play in Amaj (F#minor) pentatonic scale. However in this case, as you demonstrate, Emaj pentatonic also works. What's going on here? Thanks in advance!

    • @rustysguitar1
      @rustysguitar1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because the E chord is the first chord in the progression and also uses two full measures at the beginning and the end of the progression. The other two chords use just one measure each briefly so basically, the E chord is the tonal center of this progression. That’s why they E major pentatonic works so well over this. But you are right. The notes in the a major pentatonic will work, but they don’t sound as pleasing to the ear. A general rule is the first chord in the progression you can use a minor or major pentatonic scale to improvise over that progression. I know that’s a lot of information and there probably is more technical reasons why but that’s the way I look at it when I’m improvising. I really appreciate the question and your feedback. Have a great weekend and keep rockin. 🤛

    Nice lesson, of course, but the title led me to think this was going to be how to play riffs based on chord notes "in between" playing the chords.... you know, at the same time. Can you do a video on that?

    This is great! I have a question do you or can you play any triad A, E, B over any chord that you're playing in the little progression that you made or does it have to be A triad over the A chord, E triad over the chord etc.

    • @rustysguitar1
      @rustysguitar1  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s just a starting point to use the same triad as the chord but, you can start picking the triad a few beats before the chord actually comes up. But creating movement to the triads is a great way to sound musical. I really appreciate the comment Ed. Thanks so much.👍

    • @rustysguitar1
      @rustysguitar1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey William, definitely E mixolydian. The chords could be built with A major scale, but looking at E as the tonal center. I don’t really look at modes but, adding the chord tones to the pentatonic scale is a good way to look at it. For me it’s not as complicated that way. Others would disagree. But thanks for watching the video! Much appreciated.👍
