Nice overview. I would just like to add you can effectively negate both weather and night penalties to foraging. For weather, just equip open umbrella and you can forage in rain with no penalties. For night time, you need to equip flashlight. Useful if you want forage items that have higher chances of spawning during rain/night. Also some professions are inherently good at foraging certain items. For example: lumberjack will have easier time finding firewood, fisherman-insects etc.
Occupations like Veteran, Police Officer, and Burglar have a higher chance of finding Ammunition It's kinda crazy how many bonuses you can get for Foraging no one ever talks about

Foraging is a skill in zomboid I will defend till I die. Infinite, sustainable and varied quantities of essential items and materials will never not be good. You can even get guns, medicine, ammo, wood glue, tape etc! It's also by far the most complex system in the game, with massive foraging differences between starter classes, weather conditions and foraging zones that you could previously only see on the wiki. For example, fishermen exclusively get a 50% bonus chance to find bugs and worms, and both farms/trailer parks are unique foraging zones, alongside the others like urban areas or normal/deep forest. You are also much more likely to get plants and bugs when there are puddles, and more likely to find firewood during fall.
Another thing about the Foraging tab: If you don't have a watch (Digital or not), opening the tab lets you see the relative position of the Sun/Moon, relatively speaking, that tab lets you have a VERY ROUGH estimate of time of the day. Passive but helpful if your early game didn't net you a watch. Also Outdoorsman severely mitigates the foraging Penalties of Darkness and Rain while also reducing the negatives of staying in the rain.

@@silverbane8065 on the pz map project website there is a house in muldraugh labeled "Bob and Kate's house" the event can spawn there, the back of the house will be burnt, the windows boarded up, and a crawler dressed as Kate and a normal zombie dressed as bob will be in the upstairs bedroom. Killing i think it's the bob zombie will give a picture of Kate item.
I think Herbalist isn't necessarily required to find medicinal herbs, just increasing the odd. I never picked the trait and can still find them anyway. Also, you don't necessarily required to pick up the items to get the exp either. Discarding also works. A little correction: if you don't pick the Herbalist trait, you still need to read The Herbalist magazine to be able to identify medicinal herbs when foraging.
IIRC medicinal herbs aren't added to the foraging table until you have a trigger that can spot them, so you either read the magazine required to find them, or you're using a mod.

If you take Short Sighted( -2 radius of foraging) you can wear glasses to nullify it. Also Crouching(+10%) and aiming(+33%) increases the radius, i'd go foraging while going to my traps while aiming and leveling reloading and nimble lol.
However, it seems there's "a bug" with glasses on the current stable build41 as they were considered as "covering your eyes" which decreases the radius on top of short sighted. I hope they could fix it on future build
I love foraging cause it's like a neat little treat system. You just walk around and you'll find cool little trinckets all around. I once found a fishing net and an axe with foraging level 6. Really fun thing that I try to level up quickly

You can also click the discard item, which deletes it, but gives the same exp, so if it's trash, you don't need to clog your bag. The herbalist skill, or book, is required if you want to munch on berries and shrooms, without the risk of tripping / dying.... The herbs you find can also generally be used in cooking as well. Bugs, can be used as bait, but I find them less useful. I would love to see a ten point trait or some such, for bug eating, that if you have the trait, it removes the unhappiness buff as long as you cook them.
Depends, the trait does increase your search radius for medical herbs so if you are dedicating your character to find stuff like ginseng it's not too bad. Also finding the herbalism book can be tricky on extremely rare loot.
Bring it to a high level and you get some pretty cool stuff specially in cities or the best Backpack(vanilla) in the woods Ammo is pretty common at around level 7
One benefit of foraging and herbalist knowledge that I find worth it but doesn't get talked about enough is their cooking uses as spices. A quick walk through the forest can grant you several different kinds to use, which go a long way in reducing happiness and boredom with cooking.
You get exp when you find an item AND when you pick it up. You can right click the foraging icon that pops up and choose discard if you don't want the item but you still want the exp you get for picking it up. It's also helpful for getting rid of the icons of things you just don't want to see popup again, like twigs and poisoned berries or mushrooms. You can also keybind the enable search to a key so you don't have to open the window at all.
Foraging is more worth it in a co-op MP if you all have dedicated job and not do everything at the same time. But with fishing and farming foraging is secondary food source, the only thing where it helped in a significant manner is the constant supply of stone axe materials for base expansion. Check the foraging in wiki for forage occupation bonus if you want to squeeze whatever that can be found.

I like to set up traps in the forest and forage my way over to them, certain areas can end up netting you more rabbits and birds just from foraging than from the traps once you're lvl 10, and it goes up so fast. Anytime I'm walking along a road I'm foraging and collect a heap of chipped stones for use later, I'll usually have a container at base filled with tree branches and stones that I've collected from foraging ready for makeshift axes

Crouching can boost it by a few percent but crouching and aiming gives the biggest boost increase thou it can be extremely crippling to your speed at the start when your nimble is non-existent. It's also pretty useful if you are forced to forage near large groups of zombies and you are already prepared to deal with a few stragglers if they ever caught an eye of you.
Medicinal plants are a great way to level up foraging, as most provide tons of xp. Just go and live in the cabin in the western woods for a little and you can easily get it leveled up fast

Pro tip: After you already cleaned up your neighborhood, you can walk from and to your home while searching. This way you'll level up WHILE you travel, and you'll get extra resources, and you'll spend less energy since you're not running.

Keep in mind, if you find the "herbalist" magazine, I think it grants you what the "Herbalist" trait would have done (though the herbalist trait also helps search radius and reduces weather penalties, but only a tiny bit).
For food it's been fishing. To do decent then i need bait. Foraging is nice if I'm not using worms or spear fishing. Bait fishing is faster than spear fishing. If I'm foraging it's nice to go because better bait is faster. So while I go foraging. It also best to be be trapping too. It fills in those gaps of time finding nothings along with farming. I mean if anything foraging still helps with making sure you always have something to kill zombies with and to get maintenance up too. If you aren't doing something besides killing zombies. Then you're not surviving.
Haven't finished the video yet, but I want to say I actually foraged a pickaxe several days back when I was just looking for fishing bait. It came in clutch as I absent minded left my weapon in my base and I was jumped by a couple of zeds
This is my favourite skill. It is a mini-game. Sometimes when I get bored playing PZ, i scavenge. Couple of times I've been scavanging in PZ after being bored in real life. Although i am an extravert.
Foraging is so easy to level now, without skill books. 3 points in a skill already levels it so much faster, but finding any medicinal herb skyrockets your EXP to amazing heights, and with books, may even give entire levels by themselves. I've got a crafting only challenge going rn, and my foraging has shot up, and is still shooting up at level 7. Very satisfying.
You should make a video about taking all the foraging radius increase traits, and comparing it to zero traits, and finally all the decrease radius traits. If its possible to even level foraging
Its a great skill to have if you plan to live off the land primarily. So like, if you have decided to live in the woods by a river, or are role playing as someone smart enough to understand that the city is too dangerous to hang out in and breaking into houses is a great way to die fast. Im not certain but I think you can craft most if not all of the basic toolsets you need to say, do carpentry and build yourself a house. Its all stone age tools so not the best but it works and is basically infinitely renewable. But if you are doing city life its kinda meh. You can find better quality stuff in the buildings you loot.
I am trying too think how to best put it. 🤔 Foraging in Project Zomboid is like the Nether update in Minecraft! Before said update if you where doing a Challenge that made it hard to get wood, food, leather, and other items, you had to just get stupid lucky or do without...and STRUGGLE! Now after the update? All you need to do is get your butt to the Nether as soon as you can and it fixes so many problems, that is how Foraging is and so many people sleep on it. The amount of food and other super useful things you find is not only crazy but it complements so many other skills so well! You Fishing? Not only will you totally find bugs to fish with, but could also find everything you need to make a fishing rod. Cooking, First Aid, Carpentry, Trapping? YEP, Foraging has you covered! It isn't just as simple as finding just simple berries, fruits, vegetables, etc, what you find also goes up in AMAZING Quality as the skill levels up. maybe at level one you found a carrot that hardly gets you pass peckish, well before you know it you are finding ones that will make you darn near full. Honestly in some ways outside of other items, depending on if you have/use this skill, it might kill a lot of the "Challenge" if you are doing a challenge run!
Take park ranger and read the books. Now you can forage the galaxy without any penalties. I was playing park ranger and I was looking for some firewood. I just found 4 logs around foraging in maybe 2 minutes, I rarely find logs when I forage with other occupations.
Been playing a character where the world is dead, no electricity or gas either and I maxed out foraging because with it I can legit find materials anywhere in the world to survive even in the deep woods
Even when spec into it chance of finding rare items (like chips, guns, skill books, nails etc.) are SUPER low. On my months old park ranger character i was only able to find ammo twice which was few 9mm bullets. Even common items like chipped stone requires to walk around for a while as a maxed out foraging build. Not the mention your character needs to be in a good condition or the circle gets significantly small. It's not a bad skill but it's not worth building a character around it even when playing on low loot and never should be prioritized.

I have been leveling up Foraging for a while, I have it at Lv.6 and I wanted to ask something. Can the objects reappear again after having collected them in x area? If so, how long should one wait? or it's just one time and nothing appears again
If foraging could very minimally help you detect specific loot, I think I'd actually bother leveling it. God knows sometimes I'm drowning in resources, weapon and food and can't find that one fucking magazine
I find Foraging to be too easy to level up, and overpowered in a way where you can almost never go hungry with that alone. Would like it if it takes two or three times longer to level.
I treat foraging as more of a passive skill. I don't actually go out to level it up, but I turn it on when I can. It ties up with Farming, Trapping and Fishing. I farm to get my carrots, and then every morning, I bring that carrots to my traps, which is far away in the thick of the woods. I turn on foraging on the way there, and get random stuff, but commonly, insects, that can be used as fish bait. Good use of time. The best thing I found while foraging was a bulletproof vest with some damage. Since then I don't sleep on foraging.

I pretty much always take outdoorsman. There's no way I'm waiting around for the rain or snow to stop before I go outside.
I once found a photo frame item with foraging.
It was of 'Kate' and I found out later, Kate was once part of the old tutorial.

Keep in mind, if you find the "herbalist" magazine, I think it grants you what the "Herbalist" trait would have done (though the herbalist trait also helps search radius and reduces weather penalties, but only a tiny bit).
For food it's been fishing. To do decent then i need bait. Foraging is nice if I'm not using worms or spear fishing. Bait fishing is faster than spear fishing. If I'm foraging it's nice to go because better bait is faster. So while I go foraging. It also best to be be trapping too. It fills in those gaps of time finding nothings along with farming. I mean if anything foraging still helps with making sure you always have something to kill zombies with and to get maintenance up too. If you aren't doing something besides killing zombies. Then you're not surviving.

Haven't finished the video yet, but I want to say I actually foraged a pickaxe several days back when I was just looking for fishing bait. It came in clutch as I absent minded left my weapon in my base and I was jumped by a couple of zeds

Contrary to common thinking, if you have short sighted and wear glasses you get a negative buff while foraging. Don't wear glasses apparently.
I finally started foraging and after level 3, I found How to Generator just laying on the ground in the woods!

This is my favourite skill. It is a mini-game. Sometimes when I get bored playing PZ, i scavenge. Couple of times I've been scavanging in PZ after being bored in real life. Although i am an extravert.
Foraging is so easy to level now, without skill books.
3 points in a skill already levels it so much faster, but finding any medicinal herb skyrockets your EXP to amazing heights, and with books, may even give entire levels by themselves.
I've got a crafting only challenge going rn, and my foraging has shot up, and is still shooting up at level 7. Very satisfying.
You should make a video about taking all the foraging radius increase traits, and comparing it to zero traits, and finally all the decrease radius traits. If its possible to even level foraging

Its a great skill to have if you plan to live off the land primarily. So like, if you have decided to live in the woods by a river, or are role playing as someone smart enough to understand that the city is too dangerous to hang out in and breaking into houses is a great way to die fast. Im not certain but I think you can craft most if not all of the basic toolsets you need to say, do carpentry and build yourself a house. Its all stone age tools so not the best but it works and is basically infinitely renewable. But if you are doing city life its kinda meh. You can find better quality stuff in the buildings you loot.

Foraging in Project Zomboid is like the Nether update in Minecraft!
Before said update if you where doing a Challenge that made it hard to get wood, food, leather, and other items, you had to just get stupid lucky or do without...and STRUGGLE! Now after the update? All you need to do is get your butt to the Nether as soon as you can and it fixes so many problems, that is how Foraging is and so many people sleep on it.
The amount of food and other super useful things you find is not only crazy but it complements so many other skills so well!
You Fishing? Not only will you totally find bugs to fish with, but could also find everything you need to make a fishing rod.
Cooking, First Aid, Carpentry, Trapping? YEP, Foraging has you covered!
It isn't just as simple as finding just simple berries, fruits, vegetables, etc, what you find also goes up in AMAZING Quality as the skill levels up. maybe at level one you found a carrot that hardly gets you pass peckish, well before you know it you are finding ones that will make you darn near full.
Honestly in some ways outside of other items, depending on if you have/use this skill, it might kill a lot of the "Challenge" if you are doing a challenge run!

Take park ranger and read the books. Now you can forage the galaxy without any penalties. I was playing park ranger and I was looking for some firewood. I just found 4 logs around foraging in maybe 2 minutes, I rarely find logs when I forage with other occupations.
Been playing a character where the world is dead, no electricity or gas either and I maxed out foraging because with it I can legit find materials anywhere in the world to survive even in the deep woods
Even when spec into it chance of finding rare items (like chips, guns, skill books, nails etc.) are SUPER low. On my months old park ranger character i was only able to find ammo twice which was few 9mm bullets. Even common items like chipped stone requires to walk around for a while as a maxed out foraging build. Not the mention your character needs to be in a good condition or the circle gets significantly small. It's not a bad skill but it's not worth building a character around it even when playing on low loot and never should be prioritized.

Personally i found Foraging very relaxing. I grab my umbrella, a plastic bag, and spent an hour just picking up bugs to go fishing.

I definitely do not recommend spending the 6 points on herbalist as the herbalist skill book is not that hard to find and does the exact same thing.

You don't have to pick up the item to get the XP. Discarding the item will also give you XP
If foraging could very minimally help you detect specific loot, I think I'd actually bother leveling it. God knows sometimes I'm drowning in resources, weapon and food and can't find that one fucking magazine

I find Foraging to be too easy to level up, and overpowered in a way where you can almost never go hungry with that alone. Would like it if it takes two or three times longer to level.

Nah. Foraging is the last skill I worry about. It’s fine, I guess? Just the very least important to my playing style.
Yeah foraging is very playstyle dependent, I personally love foraging and make it one of my top skills to learn

I treat foraging as more of a passive skill. I don't actually go out to level it up, but I turn it on when I can. It ties up with Farming, Trapping and Fishing.
I farm to get my carrots, and then every morning, I bring that carrots to my traps, which is far away in the thick of the woods. I turn on foraging on the way there, and get random stuff, but commonly, insects, that can be used as fish bait. Good use of time.
The best thing I found while foraging was a bulletproof vest with some damage. Since then I don't sleep on foraging.
