  • 25k orignal mile 1949 Nash Ambassador "Barn Find" initial inspection. We put the Nash up on the lift to check the underside. To our suprise, only 1 quart of oil came out of the engine, and 19 gallons of NOT so stinky fuel drained from the tank.... this car was last registered in Walla Walla Wa. in 1967 and is under going a roadworthy mechanical restoration. The car is in fantastic shape for it's age. We cannot find even a spot of rust yet.

You should do a video series on it's resurrection. Would be fantastic. First start up in 45 years would be really cool.

NW roads don't use salt, you you'd expect less rust.
A lighting tip: Close your building doors to keep harsh sunlight out.

Torque tube drive which is what that is called on that Nash was very common on many cars through the late 40s early fifties. Most GM cars had it through 1954 except Buick which kept it till 60 Fords had it through 1949 and many Chryslers and other independents. It was a very common feature on rear wheel drive cars AMC kept it through 1966. Real cool on the 63 Washington plates. I haven't seen those since the seventies. Definitely keep those plates.

Chrysler had open drivelines form at least the 30's usually with Detroit universal joints at least in the front up until around 1965 when they got cardin style cross ujoints.Hudson had open drivelines,Studebaker had open drivelines ,Kaiser Fraz.had open drivelines. Only Buick and Chevrolet had torque tube ,Chev through 1954 Buick untilearly 60's .Crosleys were also torque tube .Open an old Motors Manual at your local library and get your facts straight .Try changing a clutch on a torque tube car vs a car with open driveline . A lot easier on a car that has a convieniantly removeable drive shaft.Another pain in Nash and on into AMC was their serrated rear brake drums .What a moronic idea ! You can't grab a junk yard drum when needed as it is already has serrations cut into it from another car's axle. Why did they not go witha taper and key like Ford ,Hudson and others with a flange like many Gm's?

Chevy and Buick were the only GM cars from the1940 and later that hat used a torque tube, and Chrysler NEVER did.

Very Nice . That will be great fun. I use to have some chrome trim for a 49-50. I'll have to check and see if I still have it. Thanks

That is awesome, that car was garaged for most of it's life and or was never driven in winter! I had a 1959 Ford wagon that had a similar looking trans set-up. It had an electric overdrive section, this Nash appears to have one as well. If it does, I would be willing to bet that car tuned up and running right will do over a hundred miles an hour. Might take a bit to get there compared to my old '59 but it will.

My '40 Nash Lafayette was reportedly found in a barn in Sonoma CA where it was parked for 40 years. The odometer reads 03900 miles. Also no rust through anywhere i can find yet. It was originally grey but is now a horrid brown

A mostly-drained engine and an undercarriage coated in Cosmoline? Almost sounds like they'd planned for this car to be put back on the road decades later. Wouldn't surprise me if the fuel tank had a generous amount of stabilizer in the gas too.

you know, it seems like all these big old Nash's came from your area in eastern Washington, how is that? This one never left Walla Walla until now.

Almost all 49 cars had a front sway bar.

well.. they were probably everywhere back in the day but they all rusted away except for the ones from the high desert.. I love how we find cars around here that have sat for 60 years and have no rust..other than just a bit of surface rust.. that 51 that was recently crushed was also really solid.. wish I could save them all Mark..but I just cant.
p.s. does it have the spare? i have extra wheels ;)

No ! this is a two door Special with the elongated nose and OHV engine. The link you sent is a 4 door, non special, short nose with the flat head engine. Same color, totally different car. This two door in this video is REALLY rare, and special, " Special " edition, the 4 doors are somewhat rare but more common

you wouldnt happen to know some info on these engines would you? we have a 1950 Nash Statesman thats 1 of 132 of this make... we got an engine stamped 5-11-53 on flate head straight 6 with a snapped cam. we have the cam to replace but wasnt sure if the valves would drop if removing just the cam or if the head needs to come off. if you have any input i would love to chat with you and will give you my number so we could do. trying to get a classic back on the road

The Nash looks to be in great shape, should be an easy retro if that's what you are going to do. I have a 1951 Statesman and it had rusted rockers and the rest was good. In 51 they were unibody and so I out a new S10 chassic under my 51.

    Two problems with these cars......
    1) UGLY AS ORIGINAL SIN. My grandfather owned one of these. It terrified me as a small child. I wouldn’ go near it. And I still don’t feel all that comfortable being around one 65 years later either.
    2) They weren’t well built. For whatever reason, these cars were already rarer than hens teeth by the late 1950’s. That doesn’t speak well for durability or overall quality. The car I drive now.........a 2001 Kia Rio.........the cheapest car sold in the US at that time, is still solid. A few rust spots, but 97% solid and running like a champ.. A full twenty years spent IN CHICAGO SALT, SNOW, COLD WEATHER, and still on the road. (Our 1958 Rambler wagon, same Chicago winters, was rusted out and scrapped by 1963. Pathetic...)

Unit body cars, when not rust-proofed, quickly surcum to rust. Undercoating was an option, even as late as the 70s, and most people refused to get it.

@@michaelbenardo5695 Under coating did very little good anyway.....those cars STILL rusted quickly.
