Apologies for the mid-roll ads -- I can't stop them.

Einfach wunderbar. Meine Emotionen fliegen. Ein Werk, dass mich für meine Kunst sehr inspiriert.

This is mesmerizing, delicate, and moving! Features energetic music too. Love his use of rests to help "dissipate" tension as he builds climaxes. Beautiful work !!! Also, heard orchestration techniques that I'd guess are associated with Lutoslawski, Ligeti, and Penderecki. However, the music never remains in constant tension or experimental.

Big Vasks fan here.... it is just brilliant. I can't help thinking, it's like music never happened, and he is inventing music anew.... so light, so seemingly simple, and yet deeply complex and moving. At some points reminds me of Grieg. Genius!

      It's absolutely nothing like Grieg.
      Grieg's music sounds like Grieg.
      Vasks' music sounds like Vasks.

@@DavidA-ps1qr While it is true that Vasks managed to cultivate a style of his own, with impressively simple means at that, one must concede influences form Górecki and Shostakovich.

@@mrtchaikovsky All composers are influenced by other music around them. But writing music becomes a fingerprint and no two are the same.

@@DavidA-ps1qr I don't disagree with you and my comment was by no means meant in a disparaging way; I admire Vasks immensely, despite being a bit hit-and-miss at times. The only music I can think of that is completely contained in itself is found in the one-note pieces by Scelsi, although this is admittedly a very extreme case.

@@mrtchaikovsky Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry, but I have a "bee in my bonnet" about people on You Tube saying this composer sounds like that composer, or this piece reminds me of that piece.
I believe that if your mindset is fixed on comparisons such as I describe, you fail to end up appreciating (or not as the case may be) the music you are actually listening to. I realise I'm on a hiding to nothing trying to convince people of this, so I've given up. :-)

This exact photo (but flipped) of the leopard was also used as the cover to the Hubert Laws album, "The Rite Of Spring." I recognized it immediately. Love the music also, of course.

This beautiful piece for string orchestra is in fact Vasks' own arrangement of his third string quartet. If you enjoyed this, I urge you to listen to his other four quartets as well.

You are very good and Vasks is really brilliant. My choir sang "Pater Noster" during one of our last performances. Write this in the search: you will love it for sure!

Lots of arvo part in melodies

There might be similarities - Vasks and Pärt both write very expressive, often consonant music and are very similar "national figures" in their countries - but their sources for musical material are quite different. Pärt is inspired most strongly by early music, and a lot of his music is formulaic (which is not a criticism at all!); Vasks' music is often more intuitive and is influenced by Latvian folk melodies.
