Heard this on some peace lovin station as I travel the nation in my big truck. It made me cry then and I had NO IDEA there were TWO singers! AMAZING. Breathtaking and so painful and soothing... like love...
these two are just so stunning to me they have been a rope, just in time, just like this song, soothing the deepest of the darkest stuff I have ever been thrown they are the most amazing hardworking artists i have ever encountered, working to get it all, right down to the bone and the truth and the heart of it i am curious, if anyone knows this show, what was the townes song they did next ? thanks for posting this
I, too, echo the thanks of posters to kdecody for posting the full ACL version of this song. A few things about it. First, the title of the song is "Throw me a Rope" (in fact, Welch sings "that's the way it will be" and the rhyme scheme bears that out as well), despite how ACL labeled the unreleased song at the time it aired. Rumor has it that "Throw me a Rope" may be released on a record in 2009. What a gorgeous, painful song. Cheers, everyone.
Pfor-- I was also at the HSB show in SF (in 06) when they played this. Like you, I was simply transported. There's something quite "otherwordly" and haunting about this track--both the music and the lyrics. And for the record, I'm pretty sure that the TvZ song she is alluding to at the end is "White Freightliner Blues"--also just a fantstic track by them. It's on the "Revelator Collection" album/DVD. Peace
Pfor, I have been to all the HSB & have been lucky to get a cd (including this song) & dvd of various years courtesy of a friend that is involved in putting it together. I asked the same ? Gillian & Dave are in the studio was her reply. Quite the catch 22. It would have been another amazing year had they been able to perform, but we might get another album soon.
Just a note on the song, correcting earlier ones: The song is, at this point, untitled. It was supered as "The Way It Will Be" on a BBC broadcast, but as Rawlings said last year in interview, "there’s an older song called-well, I don’t know what it’s going to be called, honestly-some people call it “Throw Me a Rope,” some people call it “The Way It Will Be,” that we’ve played live for a long time and will be on the record."
Hi shifter, Thanks for the HSB info! Funny, I was also speculating that they were in studio: "Working on that album that I've been waiting the last 5 years for..." is what I'd been jokingly telling people. But then I'd always follow up saying, "Well, they could do just this one gig, can't they?" Anyway, bummer about this year's HSB, but Hooray! for the new album! It should be awesome. Thanks Again & Cheers! ps. Emmylou was fantastic at HSB (of course)! So was Bonnie Prince Billy.

Wow. Thanks for posting this song. It's one of my favorites from them and it's not even released yet, hee hee. I saw them do it 2 years in a row at the SF Bluegrass Fest. The first time just simply stunned me, it was soooooo freakin' gorgeous. At the end of the song, she mentions doing a Townes Van Zandt song. Would you happen to also have that clip and can you post it? Thanks a bunch and Cheers!
I'm sitting at my desk... wondering what went wrong. My friends, my family, they were all I knew. I made the decision. I made a choice. Now my life is all that is left. Don't fear. It'll pass, just as this. That is just the way it will be. Rest easy old friend, we had the time of our lives. I'll always remember. This is the way it will be, got me walking backwards. You threw me a rope. It was him or me. That's the way it will be. You were my best friend, and I killed you. Rest easy.

Hi jimmy2sticks, and thanks for response. Just curious what's going on with the SF Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Fest this year (2008). When I didn't see Gillian and Dave on the roster this year, I was as bummed as could be. It's usually one of the highlights of my year, hee hee. Anyone with insight into why Gillian is not doing this gig this year, please enlighten us all. Thanks
One of a handful of songs that truly transports me every time I hear it (the first was from about 20 feet away at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in San Francisco in 2006). Thx to those who posted chords--I'd be interested in seeing if a few spots could be tabbed out a bit more. Is the chord after the Cm7 an A minor? And is the Am with the B in the root right? It sounds strange to my ear when I play it. Cheers
For some reason, I can't save this to my favourites, it's driving me nutz. All other YT clips save fine, anyone have any ideas how i can fix this, or why it's (not) happening?
Michiel Lombaershe found it in a friends luthier workshop. It was in a dusty corner. He commissioned him to repair it, forgot about it, wasn't even going to play it once he finally got back, but has rarely put it down since.
This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my entire life. No joke.
I can't say your name without a crow flying by. What incredible song writing!

Was uploaded 11 years ago and 1 dislike. I just today discovered this music/artist and I’m so blown away by their sound It is truly deep and moving
Just found out about these two. Rarely you see two artists so finely in tune. Two minds, one expression.
It has even been said two bodies, one soul.
Amazing song...unreal vocals...what a peach of a pair!
Heroin and Honey - I love these two and their long slow deep art.
gillian welch, ben harper, jack johnson and john mayer are restoring my faith in music, yes give me the beat lord and free my soul.
I love everything they do !!!
The singing, the harmonies and the instrumentation are so perfect, I thought they were miming to the studio version.
Delicious harmonies
Absolute beauty
They are artists who need to release an album so00000000ooooonnn!!!!! beautiful the way the two voices blend, stunning!!!!
Need to add another box above. Love with a big heart. Like, and thumbs up falls short for these two artist !!!
There can be no other for beauty, pure musical beauty. OMG I love these towo artists. Harrow and the Harvest has me spellbound!

This sounds so much like 'On The Beach'. Beautiful.

My heart
so great live. I saw them play this song in GA over a year ago. It was a very small venue==email invite only from people that attended previous shows.
Very excited about the new album. Some things are simply worth waiting for, and I can just imagine the way it will be.
I could kiss you for being the person to finally post this entire song. It's my favorite. Hope it makes it on the next album.

Wow...this song is amazing. Do they have chemistry or what!?
seems like one voice! Amazing!
transcendent harmonies that disappear into nowhere.
Gillian Welch is the best thing since sliced bread.

Excellent! A little less folk/bluegrassy than a lot of their stuff (which I LOVE, but this makes a nice, smoother contrast)
Anyone with insight into why Gillian is not doing this gig this year, please enlighten us all.

they fit together like spoons
@therealdmt yep. ! Good observation. Its just as good too. Which is saying a LOT.
@33mrk they just released this again on the new cd as "the way it will be "
It is called "The way it will be".
@33mrk the title is The Way It Will Be
Really slow version. Still brilliant of course.
I've meant chords.
it has not. the haven't released an album in at least 3 or 4 years.
it seems on the beach of neil young
Can Somebody post shords,please. Thanks.
I am not worthy.
This song is called "Throw me a rope"
For some reason, I can't save this to my favourites, it's driving me nutz. All other YT clips save fine, anyone have any ideas how i can fix this, or why it's (not) happening?
You are my favorite drug.
I mean a 2003 ACL
what is his guitar and what strings is he using??
google it
He plays an Epiphone Olympic. A cheap arch-top from the '30th.
Michiel Lombaershe found it in a friends luthier workshop. It was in a dusty corner. He commissioned him to repair it, forgot about it, wasn't even going to play it once he finally got back, but has rarely put it down since.
