The MacMaster is one of the most annoying posters out there. I think he was inspired by Scotty. He buys the most expensive EV out there and then complains about range, depreciation and cost of ownership. Spends a lot of time spreading misinformation and there are a lot of people who lap it up; confirmation bias at play.

So in the UK electric cars are exempt from paying annual road tax. There are loads of different rates but since 2017 all cars pay a flat rate every year with an additional premium for cars costing over £40,000 for the first 5 years. This change was announced over a year ago and means that owners of EVs will pay the same as petrol cars do after April 2025. For me, that is roughly £190 per year. I have not had to pay that for the last 2 years, but if I had a petrol car I would have. So this guys argument is that you shouldn't buy an electric car because something is free now, but will cost the same as everyone else in the future.

I first came across a MacMaster video maybe a couple of years ago. In it he was complaining about how it was impossible to charge his Porsche at the public charger he was at because the cable was too short. But the video clearly showed to anyone who has ever used a charger that he hadn't driven all the way into the bay therefore the cable was never going to reach. I pointed this out in the comments and then after a moments thought blocked him. After watching this video, I believe I made the right choice.

It was clear he was deliberately not operating the door handles to the point where the mechanical opening operated. In the UK it was traditionally the case that Tesla Chargers only worked with Teslas. However, recently they have started to open to non Teslas.
The government is now requiring all new chargers installed to be able to paid for using a contactless card. Quite why this would mean that Porsche chargers would stop charging Mercedes I have no idea - it doesn't sound sensible.
As for the "Electric Vehicle Tax" (currently zero) we've known for a long time that it would start to affect EV cars in due course, I bought my first EV a few weeks ago, and I was well aware that this was coming.
As for availability of chargers, there are between 1500 and 2000 new public chargers being installed in the UK every month. The cost of public charging is an issue for those people who can't charge at home (making an EV more expensive to charge than it would be to fuel a petrol car), but charger availability is improving all the time.

Yes, but after I'd already bought an EV. Actually I don't think the vehicle tax will be a problem. It's an excuse for EV haters not to go electric. I am more annoyed about the cost of charging. 85p per kWh! Seriously? The Government needs to put an energy price cap on Instavolt, BP Pulse, Ionity, Shell Recharge and 200 other suppliers. I am very sure they don't pay 85p per unit, and I bet it is much cheaper to set up a charging station than a petrol station. They could even allow a small premium for EV chargers that offer 100% sustainable power to get people moving in the right direction.

Here in the UK, road maintenance is paid for by council tax and also general taxation, whereas, vehicle tax, is paid based on engine size and the amount of emissions they put out. Vehicle tax in the UK is quite often mistakenly called "road tax", as it once was called, but it was replaced in 1937 with what we have today, vehicle excise duty, which as I said before, is paid based on engine size and amiunt of emissions. There are tons of videos on TH-cam where UK motorists have a go a cyclists and often they say things like "I pay road tax" or "no pay, no say" whenever cyclists pull them up for doing stupid things while driving. It's kind of sad that drivers in the UK don't understand what they are paying for when they come out with nonsense like that.

Yes - that's correct. It was getting pretty annoying having to install yet another App on my phone in order to charge the car at a new charging point. I 100% agree about displaying prices. That's so annoying. You plug in and start charging and THEN it tells you it's costing 85p per unit. That's if you can find a little box thing in the distant corner of a supermarket car park.... I don't think I can face trying a Tesla charger on my non-Tesla. Tesla seems to have got it right yet again. Drive up. Plug in. Drink coffee for 10 minutes. No bank cards or Apps. Drive away. Why are other car manufacturers so slow to get themselves sorted out?

I dunno why some people push back so hard on EVs. We are already at peak shale. It’s just going to get harder and harder to get oil and more and more people need cars / vehicles. Forgetting the environment we will need to do this eventually anyways. But we have plenty of lithium and salt and other chemistries. and even after that we just need to be able to make batteries out of something.

The only thing to fail was the 12V battery after 4 years (same as any other car, not the big battery) and Tesla came out to my house and replaced it free at a time of my own convenience. Can’t beat that. I fully expect to drive this car half a million miles or more.

When he arrives at the destination, days "now I have to find a working charger".
The car literally has a database of where they are.
      It's so forced.
Funniest part is that go didn't spec the high power converter so at an open Tesla supercharger, can only get 50kW. How to make a 15 minute stop have to be 45 minutes. 😅

Ok the UK is totally different. Here in Ireland (which isn’t in the uk) we pay VAT (value added tax) or what you call sales tax on petrol/diesel. Thats one thing. ICE cars pay a thing called “motor tax” which is a tax on emissions and goes into the upkeep of roads, amongst others.
So EVs should be exempt. I think the uk has the same rules but that, in essence, is what he’s complaining about, that now EVs will have to pay the same sort of motor tax as ICE cars, which are emission based, and EVs don’t emit pollution.

    • @CaptainProton1

  • @AndyInTheUK

Ah!!!! 10 minutes in. I am in the UK and I have an EV, and I was also completely furious to get that letter. At the moment we don't know what road tax we are going to have to pay for our EV's, but it is pretty obvious that there will be a big problem for the Government if everyone stopped buying fossil fuel for their cars. The price of "gas" (petrol) in the UK at the moment is about £1.35 per litre which is around $7 per US gallon. About 50% of that goes to the UK Government. We need a road pricing scheme to replace Vehicle Tax and fossil fuel duty (tax), or the country has a huge hole in the budget. If they get something sorted it would allow Government to get people onto EV's quicker. Taxing EV's gives people yet another excuse not to scrap the fossil-burner. I sympathise with the chap who made the video, but if he can afford a Porsche EV, I don't think that the EV equivalent of Vehicle Tax will be much of an issue. A bigger issue is the fact that is costs an absolute fortune to charge your car at a publicly accessible charger. Up to 85p per kWh. That's criminal, and the Government is doing nothing about it. Sure it's cheaper at home, but .... well you know what I am going to say.

I think if someone lives in an apartment and can't charge at home overnight, but relies only on public fast chargers, their EV battery can fail in just a few years instead of last 10 to 15 years.
