It annoyed me so much. Wow that's so interesting, I get bored so easily but felt like The Song of Achilles kept moving quickly and had good pacing! I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it actually. It's so fascinating to hear other people's thoughts 🌼💛
Lol I remember seeing the comments under your goodreads review of Dune and I'm still absolutely shocked at some of them. I specifically remember one comment that was like "no, you read it wrong, you're not used to focusing and you don't understand the philosophy" and I'm like what? Since when did book spaces become so entitled? Who the HELL decided that whether a book is good or not is subjective? Who decided that there's only one way to read a book? Book spaces have become increasingly entitled and ignorant. I feel like as adults, we all know most of this is subjective, and there's no such thing as a perfect book. Books cannot be enjoyed by everyone and I don't understand how some people cannot understand this? I've loved some books you've hated and hated some books you've loved. It doesn't mean anything and no one is right here. Grown adult men acting like children when a woman rates their beloved book anything but 5 stars is absolutely insane.

It’s funny how every time you don’t like a popular book there is someone saying you probably just didn’t get it. 😂 Especially with si-fi or fantasy, because you know girls can really only understand romance.
The Silent Patient is one of the two most disappointing books I've read in the past few years. I finished it, but only as a hate read where I thought, "This isn't how anything in modern psychiatry works!" every few pages, so I am right with you there. The other insanely popular book I hated was The Martian. Interesting science stuff, zero characters acting like real people. I think I gave both of them 2 stars simply because I finished them. The Shining, however, is my favorite Stephen King. King became popular when I was in my teens so was probably formative in my early taste in horror, and I devoured The Shining in 2 days up at a cottage where everything was extra dark and scary. I am in the minority in not thinking Kubrick's movie version is a masterpiece. Thought the book was a lot better!
I agree with you on The Princess Bride and Good Omens. I think I gave them both 3 stars. I loved the movie and tv show for adaptations though. Hope the air quality in your area has improved and continuing to send positive vibes to the efforts to stop the wild fires.
I also adore the 1997 miniseries starring Charles Dance and Diana Rigg- it was my first experience of the story. Aired on PBS here in the US- not sure if it was a BBC production?
I find it interesting when people have different opinions on books. The world would be so boring if all think the same 😂 I don't really understand Goodreads' rating system, because everything seems so inflated. I believe that the circumstances that you meet the book also influences your reading experience. The amount of prescribed books that I hated while studying it, but loved it afterwards are numerous! 😂
Oh, I absolutely loathed A Hitchhiker’s Guide and was so disappointed by it’s utter shitness. The humour in it is so juvenile and reminds me of a couple of early teenage boys coming up with ‘cool’ stuff to amuse each other. If one more person tells me that 42 is the answer to everything while looking smug about it, I’m going to slap them 😡😡 Not really, but they are definitely getting glared at
We all have different tastes, and people need to learn to be able to have different opinions about their shared hobbies without letting it get personal.
The Silent Patient is my last year's worst book. 2 generous stars, it was so boring and annoying. The main character was so whiny and the portrait of mental institution and mental illness is so damaging.
@@theIaurenshow I think you should try to read the synopsis and if it interests you, go for it. A lot of people enjoyed the book, you might like it as well 😊
THANK YOU ABOUT DAISY JONES. that book is ADORED BY EVERYONE!!! there is so many things i didn’t like abt it especially bc i didn’t read with the audiobook.
I think looking at books in this way is really healthy and can really help steer what books you do pick up in the future. I think you're just not the biggest fan of British humour and that's totally valid. A lot of people don't but it makes you not liking things like Good Omens or Hitchhiker's Guide make sense since face value they seem like books you would have liked.
Totally agree with you on Dune. DNFd the first book. Absolutely hated 1984, and thought the Raven cycle got worse as it went along. (My favorite was the first book in the series and right now I can't even remember the title.) I liked Rebecca, but not enough to pick up more of the author's works. I also disliked a Handsmaid's tale so much I won't even try The Testaments. So you are not alone and it is nice to know I am not either.
Dune is one of my favorite books, but yeah its definitely NOT for everyone. I refuse to read anything by King. I cannot stand him or his proclivity for weird underage sex and describing women/girls bodies. Ahh Hitchhikers Guide is also one of my favorite books! Sad that people are jerks about you not liking the same books. People can be real snobs sometimes.
Oh man!! This is the reason I love your reviews. You are so on point. I have read some of the books mentioned here and I agree with you a 100% for them. And the reviews in Goodreads did not make sense to me. And then there were some books I have not read yet and was skeptical and now will just whoop it off my tbr. Except The Silent Patient 🥹 I loved it and the twist, still my favorite 🤭 You are so cool Emily, keep rocking ❤
I am SO with you on The Princess Bride, Raven Cycle, Hitchhiker's Guide, Rebecca, Ready Player One and The Black Prism. All overhyped for no reason, in my mind. Even though we don't agree on everything (I really enjoyed Theft of Swords and The Last Wish, for example) I truly appreciate you making these kinds of videos so I feel validated on my unpopular opinions! Keep being real and telling it like it is, Emily!
Such an interesting video, I totally agree with you about normalizing not liking popular books. Every reader has different interests, therefore it's important to respect that and not gatekeep popular books. Personally, I didn't like Verity and ACOTAR. I gave Verity a 2.5 stars rating, while I rated ACOTAR with 2 stars. And no, I'll probably won't continue reading the rest of the ACOTAR books, because I wasn't a fan of the writing style, the characters and I was not even invested to the fantasy world. As for Verity, it was a very underwhelming thriller, written in a dull and plain way, with insufferable and dull characters (except Verity who was more interesting) and more sex than plot. Not to mention that I was able to guess the plot twist.
You absolutely came after some of my favorite books. 🙂You also had some opinions I totally agree with. Funny how different books affect people in different ways.
i love when you stir the pot and people lose it lmao, if i were to ever trust goodreads, trust it wouldn't be in this lifetime. i need this to be a series emily pleaseee edit: also my logic have always been: i can shit on a book all i want since i'm the one who have wasted their time, so i will waste more time roasting the piece of dumpster fire. but that's just me.
I absolutely loved Daisy Jones, I also read it as an audiobook. I do understand the "skeleton of a story", but the characters!!!!! I can not believe these people aren't real. I miss them, I think of them still. I want Karen to be my friend!
I was way more invested in the show because I got more of a chance to get invested in the characters, did you try it? Lol oh no, she’s the naughty one too so I’m always reprimanding her 💀
@@BookswithEmilyFox i was so annoyed that they made the characters in the show look exactly the same as the flashbacks to the actual band. i always imagined them as fat old or just like older folks versions and i was so annoyed like let us age hollywood we are women we get wrinkles. isn’t the interviewer suppose to be the granddaughter as well wouldnt they be way older ?
That was fun. Of course we all have different taste, that's why it's interesting to talk about books! I agree, My cousin Rachel is so underrated, we always hear about Rebecca (I still liked it, but not her best). On the other hand, I read Evelyn Hugo and still don't understand the hype at all 🤷♀
I was also really disappointed with Good Omens! Love the works of Gaiman and Pratchett separately, but this book just did not work imo. I only really cared about Aziraphale and Crowley’s arc. It was a slog to get through otherwise
So I am not alone in this?! I love Pratchett book, read like almost forty of them and Neil Gaiman is very readable, like Sandman is incredible but yeah Good Omens were very meh for me, like I would say absolutely average book from these authors IDK. Hugely “it wasn’t bad” category.
The cats going feral in the background made me laugh so hard throughout the video 😂 I completely agree though -- normalize not liking things in general!!! Especially books! They're subjective like anything else in the arts.
I love the princess bride movie. I read the book a few years ago and it was just ok. I agree the double narration really took me oit of the story. But the movie is a classic.
I appreciate the different angle. It is refreshing to hear different opinions and to be able to reflect and make my own ideas after. Attacking a person for their book opinions should not happen and might be an indication of how little those people feel about themselves. Thank you for sharing and starting the discussion. (You should totally bumped up Wordslut up the tbr. I started it on audiobook and it is very enlightening)
I loved Daisy Jones & the Six and thought 1984 was pretty good. I recently read my Sanderson and it was Rithmatist! What a coincidence it pops up here now. haha I enjoyed it more than you but I agree with you that it would have been more enjoyable if it took place at university instead of what essentially amounted to HS.
I picked up Hitchhikers guide b/c I was traveling and it was in an airport and I thought I could finish just with the flights I had for the trip... it ended up taking me another 6 months and a very concerted effort forcing myself to finally finish... I thought I would love them... decided to try #2 and it was the same story, to me it's like reading 3000 page tome... I wish I knew why b/c I really enjoy the movie just the story and humor don't hit even a little for me I guess :(
Some of those books I haven't read so I can't give my opinion on them but I'm with you for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and 1984. I expected so much more based on all the hype 🤷🏻♀️
I use The Storygraph rather than Goodreads, but for me, it was Legendborn. 😅 Highly rated but I had such mixed feelings about it. Too many of the reviews felt like they slapped a 5 star on it without taking time to think on it critically. (I loved the main character's personal story as it was organic and drew from the author's own grief; really didn't like the Arthurian stuff as it was choppy, contrived, nonsensical, and just...kind of goofy next to the personal story) I could talk a lot about this and think about it quite often. I do agree with you about so many of these! Especially the Raven Cycle, King books, a lot of Gaiman, etc. I always appreciate that you're straightforward and honest with your reviews, regardless of the overall reviewer opinions. It's really refreshing and cathartic. (Until certain types of men find your reviews...🙃)
Oh Emily 🥲 I just finished Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandy Sandy and I LOVED IT and was going to recommend you read it too, but then you said you didn’t like the princess bride or good omens which Sanderson was inspired by the narration for Tress of the Emerald Sea and it hurts 😔😂 I still hope you like it tho.
Last year, I went on a trip with friends and some people that I didn't know. One of the guy saw me read a book and came to talk to me about book. The first thing he said was that he just finish the witcher serie and that it was pretty good. My answer : "I haven't read it, but I've heard that it is really sexist and there is a few grape scenes." He look at me for a while and then said that I was right and he never saw the story that way. Conclusion, sharing your opinion can affect some people point of view. He was offended, he just stayed there and was thinking for a while.
Absolutely! I have a friend who’s husband had read the black prism series by Brent weeks and liked it. I told him I couldn’t finish it because it was too sexist. He went back to try and read it again and his mind was blown that he hadn’t noticed it when he first read it as a young adult. I’m sure I’d be shocked if I went back to reread older favorites or rewatched older movies… as long as people don’t get mad over it and are opened to learn it’s all good
@@BookswithEmilyFox I do agree that some older favorite are questionnable. In the case I was stating earlier, he finish the serie a few months prior, it wasn't an old favorite, but he didn't notice until I mention it. He is somebody who is aware of this type of behavior in everyday life, but just didn't pick it up in the book.
As someone who loves character driven stories I also did not enjoy 1984. It was bland amd at times boring even though I do appreciate the ideas behind it. Definitely enjoyed Animal Farm much more. If you haven't read it yet I'd recommend Wool. It's set in a dystopian world and I think it is very engageing with likable characters and an interesting plot.
Love this video idea! I've read 4 books on this list: The Princess Bride (I agree with you - I watched the movie afterward as an adult and thought it was fine, though I'm sure it would have been much more memorable to me as a child 🤷 I remember liking the book well enough, laughing here and there, but it was very forgettable to me), Rebecca (I personally loved it - I gave it 4⭐ but changed my rating to 5⭐ because I still think about it to that day - I felt a lot for the main character as she reminded me of myself as a 18-19 year old and thought the author's atmospheric writing style, incorporation of theme and plot very impressive and clever - I watched the most recent adaptation and it was so dumb compared to the book 😬), 1984 (I liked it thematically, I still remember the ending vividly, though I did wish the characters and plot were more fleshed-out), Assassin's Apprentice (I DNFed it at 70% as I was bored out of my mind and didn't care about any characters - did you listen to it on audio? I'm surprised you got so far, it's so painfully slow! I did like the writing style but man I needed way more character interactions after all this time).
Omg I love The Last Wish so much, it’s one of my favourite books ever! 😭 But it’s been a few years since I’ve read it and I honestly don’t remember the SA. My popular yet hated book The House in the Cerulan Sea. Absolutely loathed that one.
Well, Dune series (the 6 books) are mainly philosophical, rather than SF/actions books. And Jessica is a normal name, since her child is Paul (another normal name). It is tedious, and not for "modern" readers, who like fast paced books. It is more like a classic novel, maybe in the same category as Ulysses by James Joyce.
For sure a hot take with Daisy Jones. I loved it but now that I'm thinking about it, i get what your issue with it is. for me that was fine though, I think I just read it in the right moment where I was able to somehow appreciate the way the book works
I'm glad you made this video cause it is great to know you're not alone in the hate or dnfing of some of these books. I tried the Raven cycle series a few years ago and couldn't even finish the first book. And dnfed both of Sara j mass series so boring. The silent patient wasn't anything special I don't know how it won that year. One book I hate that everyone loves is Behind her eyes. The main character was so dumb and one of my top pet peeves is dumb characters. And recently tried to read My heart is a chainsaw and dnfed that too it had to much stream of consciousness.
I'm so glad someone else doesn't like Dune 😅 I was so ready to love it that I get a very beautiful edition and huuuu, I was so disappointed. I actually loved like the 2/3 of it but then there's like a jump in time or something like that (don't remember exactly) and you learn the death of a "important" character that you don't know and Paul doesn't look like he cares so I was like "I don't care either" 😂 I completely stoped feeling invested and started being really bored. And I HATED 1984 with passion. Some interesting ideas but awful, AWFUL characters. There's litteraly a point where I thought "my god, I hope they will die".
14:25 ish - Just a point of clarification but there were 3 novellas in the Skyward series (under Skyward Flight now if you buy them together) 2.5 Sunreach 2.6 ReDawn and 3.5 Evershore (read after Cytonic)... I also did not enjoy these especially the first 2 but unfortunately they are pretty much required reading if you want to understand what is happening in the story... and not excited to see Janci is continuing the Skyward property (on her own? idk, maybe the same way these were done, I'm uncertain)... Anyway... :woman_shrugging:
I feel like the “children’s book for adults” vibe is part of why I like Princess Bride and Good Omens? I know what you mean by it, and hearing you say it was actually like an “oh! yes that’s it!” hahahaha, I understand though, it’s hit or miss even when you like the vibe
I hate to admit it, but Marie Lu is a one hit wonder for me. I enjoyed the Legend trilogy a lot. But literally everything else she's written has been decidedly "meh" to me. I absolutely hated The Young Elites.
Do you have any recommendations for books following assassins that were better than Throne of Glass? I thought the premise was really interesting but I don't think I made it more than two chapters in the book because it was just so poorly written.
Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is on my tbr. I am very interested to read it after reading the blurb, but I'm still quite hesitant to pick it up. Oh, well, let's hope that I won't end up being disappointed!
in case you haven’t bought it yet and can’t get it from a library, what i always like to do to figure out whether i might like a book is to download the kindle sample. i understand your mixed feelings, though. after hearing emily’s boring verdict on dune i wonder whether i’m better off sticking to the movies. 😆
I really love the Princess Bride movie. I don't plan the book because I've heard it was meh. (But I do have a 25th edition copy of it because it was pretty.)
I don't watch every video you post but Jesus the kittens are huge and so cute. I am a bookstagrammer and in my country everything is glazed and every PR package is something new and amazing. I am famous for "hating" books. So as "hater" I love the concept of normalizing bad opinion about books. Thank you for doing this❤
They’ve grown so much in the last month! I think reviews that are always positive are pointless… sometimes a negative review is the reason for me to pick up a book 🤷♀️
@@BookswithEmilyFox I don't read reviews of books I didn't read before. I read The Sixth Extinction as an audiobook. It's pretty repetitive and simple so it works better that way, and I do feel like there are things that an average person wouldn't know about climate change in relation to previous extinctions. I do remember that scene but maybe the narration made it seem more toned-down than it was, because I don't remember there being much of a conflict about that gift shop situation.
I'm so glad to see you didn't like The Toll either. The first book was SO good. Second book was meh. But the Toll was utter trash. I was so angry by the end that I immediately unhauled the series. You had such good thing going and then ruined it.

I saw the author talk about the book anxious people. He said he wrote it while he was in an in-patient therapeutic setting and didn't expect to publish it. I like him but didn't like that book so I get it.
I haven't read The Riyria Revelations series yet but I would give Michael J. Sullivan's books another chance. The Legends of the First Empire series has really awesome female characters.
I thought it was pretty good, and her saying "most of the female characters are sex workers" is just wrong. There is like 1 that is actually a part of the story (a couple other that get mentioned), and the 2 main female characters are not. And all 3 are strong characters in my opinion.
Steelheart was my first Anderson book, yes I didn’t really enjoy it, great promise but the main character was so so. I’m trying to get through Skyward, put it down 40% hope one day I’ll finish it
Interesting. We like what we like and don’t have to apologize. I was a lit 29:05 major and really good writing will draw me in. 1984 - there’s a reason for assigning it in high school but I never considered rereading it. On the other hand, I love a good YA series. I read Arc of the Scythe along with my teenage grandson and we both loved it. I’ve never liked Stephen King (with a few exceptions). I also enjoy going back to Golden Age sci-fi, like Asimov, Clarke, early Heinlein, books that seem very “simple” today.
I liked The Sixth Extinction, I don't even remember the author IN the book, so now I'm wondering what I was focused on the whole time. Because the way you describe Elizabeth Kolbert is how I feel about Bill Bryson. I find him really crass and abrasive. And I had a similar experience with Cannibalism: A Perfectly Natural History by Bill Schutt. I loved the book, I thought it was fascinating. But every part of the book with Bill in it, interviewing people, and sharing his little opinions, it irritated me. At one point he described an interview subject's child as "husky." It was so unnecessary. I would have rated it 5 stars if he had just left his personal narrative and thoughts out of it. Schutt still wasn't as bad as Bill Bryson in A Walk in the Woods, though.
Middle aged man here. I'm reading 'Dune' right now for the first time. To say that I am struggling with it is a grotesque understatement, and I usually enjoy scifi. How did people who didn't have the luxury of audiobooks ever finish reading it? I don't want to DNF it, I want to finish it and be able to offer a fair opinion on it, but my god....
This round there were none that hurt too much (100% agree on Silent Patient and other mystery thrillers - well not everything can be Gone Girl or Kind of Worth Killing). But if you ever felt like it, another mystery thriller recommendation video would be nice. Also I hate when "men"/world makes fun of women reading some smutty (totally consensual) romances, but straight up r@pe in "esteemed" (male) SF books is totally OK. PS: I am still hurting over And then there were none.
I can see finding Dune boring. I read it a looooong time ago. In fact, it was my first sci fi that WASN’T Star Trek, Star Wars, or Battlestar Galactica. I thought it was amazing but sci fi has really moved on post-Dune and I’m not sure it would blow my mind if I re-read it now. Funny, the Jessica thing doesn’t really bug me - most of the weird names are associated with the planet Arrakis, but Jessica and her husband (and son) aren’t from there.
I think the lesson here is don't go to a book expecting to give it five stars. That's a half-joke. I've noticed that if I get super high expectations for something, it's more likely than not going to be a disappointment. I build up this huge expectation for whatever it is (book, movie, tv show) and eventually the media cannot live up to what I've built up in my mind.
Rebecca was underwhelming lol. "Skeleton of a story" sums up Daisy Jones very well. Anxious People felt like it was really TRYING to get me to feel something, but I didn't want to lol.
The Silent Patient is last year's worse book. 2 generous stars, it was so boring and annoying. The main character was so whiny and the portrait of mental institution and mental illness is so damaging.
Michael J Sullivan is known for writing good female characters in fantasy. First book of Riyria only has a princess and a sex worker, true 😂 but it gets so much better. People rave about Legends of the First Empire series, saying how amazing his female characters are. I haven’t read that yet but after reading the second Riyria book, I’m starting to believe the positive reviews. I’m curious to know what would you think though
Idk why, but I never wanted to see Princess Bride, I’ve never read the book. Everyone has always said how great it is. I have absolutely no interest in Princess Bride. For some reason that really triggers people.

Thank you! Today was good around here thankfully, they're announcing more this weekend so we'll see
If you want to try a film adaptation of Rebecca, definitely do the Hitchcock one. It’s excellent. The recent Netflix one was not good.
I also adore the 1997 miniseries starring Charles Dance and Diana Rigg- it was my first experience of the story. Aired on PBS here in the US- not sure if it was a BBC production?
I find it interesting when people have different opinions on books. The world would be so boring if all think the same 😂
I don't really understand Goodreads' rating system, because everything seems so inflated.
Very well said
The kittens in the background are my favourite. 🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛
Thank you for your honest feedback.
The Silent Patient is my last year's worst book. 2 generous stars, it was so boring and annoying. The main character was so whiny and the portrait of mental institution and mental illness is so damaging.
Oh gosh! I loved that book!
I agree I did not like The Silent Patient either. Was awful
Exactly! I’m really tired of “psychopath” psychologists and really unrealistic and cheesy therapy sessions
I want to read the book, do you think it’s atleast worth the time to read it once? Or I should look up the plot summary and move on lol
@@theIaurenshow I think you should try to read the synopsis and if it interests you, go for it. A lot of people enjoyed the book, you might like it as well 😊
THANK YOU ABOUT DAISY JONES. that book is ADORED BY EVERYONE!!! there is so many things i didn’t like abt it especially bc i didn’t read with the audiobook.
oh my goodness! I thought that was momma cat playing in the background, but then there was three of them! The kittens have gotten so big!
I couldnt stop watching the cats messing around in the background. So cute.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and The House on the Cerulean Sea was not worth the hype for me 😬
Agreed on Cerulean Sea!
Completely agree on both. Both were 1 star for me.
I loved Anxious People! I am older and I think this book appeals more to an older generation.
I loved it too and I'm in my 40s so that makes sense.
I loved it and I’m in my mid 20’s 😅 it was my favorite book of last year
Love your videos! It helps me decide on my next read.
Thank you for saying that about Daisy Jones and the Six. I was so confused while and after reading it.
Sarah j maas is the new Stephanie Meyer. She’s so bad. Terrible writing. Horrible stories. Baby stories…
I recommend Revival by him its a whole different thing I could not put it down.
Oh man!! This is the reason I love your reviews. You are so on point. I have read some of the books mentioned here and I agree with you a 100% for them. And the reviews in Goodreads did not make sense to me. And then there were some books I have not read yet and was skeptical and now will just whoop it off my tbr. Except The Silent Patient 🥹 I loved it and the twist, still my favorite 🤭
You are so cool Emily, keep rocking ❤
I am SO with you on The Princess Bride, Raven Cycle, Hitchhiker's Guide, Rebecca, Ready Player One and The Black Prism. All overhyped for no reason, in my mind. Even though we don't agree on everything (I really enjoyed Theft of Swords and The Last Wish, for example) I truly appreciate you making these kinds of videos so I feel validated on my unpopular opinions! Keep being real and telling it like it is, Emily!
Apparently “Eleanor oliphant is completely fine” was in fact, NOT completely fine. 😂❤
Exactly ! 😂
I have yet to try some CH... not sure I ever will lol
I loved the throne of glass series, but have no interest in ACOTAR, and the reviews haven't helped
You absolutely came after some of my favorite books. 🙂You also had some opinions I totally agree with. Funny how different books affect people in different ways.
I DNF’d Hitchhiker’s Guide. Nah. Bored me to tears.
i love when you stir the pot and people lose it lmao, if i were to ever trust goodreads, trust it wouldn't be in this lifetime. i need this to be a series emily pleaseee
edit: also my logic have always been: i can shit on a book all i want since i'm the one who have wasted their time, so i will waste more time roasting the piece of dumpster fire. but that's just me.
I absolutely loved Daisy Jones, I also read it as an audiobook. I do understand the "skeleton of a story", but the characters!!!!! I can not believe these people aren't real. I miss them, I think of them still. I want Karen to be my friend!
Btw my name is Claudia and I giggle every time that kitten acts out and you talk about her.
@@BookswithEmilyFox I did like the show but some of the changes didn't really work for me. Still it was a good take on the book imo
That was fun. Of course we all have different taste, that's why it's interesting to talk about books!
I agree, My cousin Rachel is so underrated, we always hear about Rebecca (I still liked it, but not her best).
On the other hand, I read Evelyn Hugo and still don't understand the hype at all 🤷♀
I think what helped me with Evelyn Hugo is that I hadn’t seen it going around much when I read it so my expectations were low!
@@Morfeusm definitely not alone! i liked the idea of the two collaborating more than the end result
I DNFd it tbh 😬 it was just such a painful experience for me
Ahh that Good Omens reference killed me 🥲. But 100% agree with Assassin’s Apprentice!
The cats going feral in the background made me laugh so hard throughout the video 😂 I completely agree though -- normalize not liking things in general!!! Especially books! They're subjective like anything else in the arts.
1984 oh that hurt 😂. but its okay i couldnt finish a single becky chambers book and they are so short 🙈 i really tried tho!
Haha that’s fair!
I was so mad about the toll b/c the first two were so good but the ending went like LEFT from where it started and just was such a let down
I love the princess bride movie.
I keep hearing the audiobook is great and I'm mad that neither of my 2 libraries have it -_-
Attacking people for liking the book shouldn't happen either.
Evelyn Hugo was a so fast read that I Believed that was a sign of a good story so 5 stars but with time was reduced to 3 stars
I also enjoyed Throne of Glass more than you but I dropped it after the second book. The twist I could see a million miles away and just hated it. 😂
Hitchhikers was so boring. 1984 was interesting but I wouldn't call it an enjoyable read.
@@Hungarycloud I preferred We by Yevgeny Zamyatin over 1984
I use The Storygraph rather than Goodreads, but for me, it was Legendborn.
Oh Emily 🥲
I just finished Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandy Sandy and I LOVED IT and was going to recommend you read it too, but then you said you didn’t like the princess bride or good omens which Sanderson was inspired by the narration for Tress of the Emerald Sea and it hurts 😔😂
I still hope you like it tho.
I also really loved it hahah. I’m really curious what Emily will think of it
Last year, I went on a trip with friends and some people that I didn't know.
Priory of the orange tree was very boring. Lord of the Rings was also very boring. I DNFed it at 647 pages. I liked the Hobbit though
I just love your honesty 🤌🏻
For sure a hot take with Daisy Jones. I loved it but now that I'm thinking about it, i get what your issue with it is. for me that was fine though, I think I just read it in the right moment where I was able to somehow appreciate the way the book works
Ok I agree with you mostly but I liked The Silent Patient
I loved Elinor Oliphant!🤷♀️ I thought it was endearing.
i really liked it. listened to the audiobook.
@@jennifer_left_a_comment that's great to hear!
@@karamarie6781 oh, that's good!

i understand your mixed feelings, though. after hearing emily’s boring verdict on dune i wonder whether i’m better off sticking to the movies. 😆
We often have very similar tastes when it comes to books but this video made me realise that when we disagree we really do disagree. 😆
Haha it was bound to happen at one point!
I loved The Princess Bride, but I agree about Dune.
Now I'm scared to read some of these, because I agree with you on The Last Wish.
I really love the Princess Bride movie. I don't plan the book because I've heard it was meh. (But I do have a 25th edition copy of it because it was pretty.)
Shook! I love Dune so much 🫶🏽
I like the movie better!
@@BookswithEmilyFox That movie had no soul.
What conversations and how long they'd be if everything is unicorns and rainbows 🤷🏽♀️
I like your honesty n realness ♡ hi from uk xx
As a linguistics student, I hated Babel with a passion.
Haha I’ve heard a few people say the same! Personally liked the school setting but didn’t love the ending
I'm so glad to see you didn't like The Toll either. The first book was SO good. Second book was meh. But the Toll was utter trash. I was so angry by the end that I immediately unhauled the series. You had such good thing going and then ruined it.
It had so much potential :(
I look back on some of my 5 star reads from a few years ago and I was way too generous with a lot of them.
My hot takes:

When Breath Becomes Air: 2 stars, 4.39 average
The Housemaid: 1 star, 4.36 average
Things We Never Got Over: 1 star, 4.23 average
Books I think are underrated (literally):
Lucky You by Erika Carter: 4 stars, 2.61 average
Catherine House: 4 stars, 3.11 average
Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar: 5 stars, 3.31 average
The Cabin at the End of the World: 5 stars, 3.32 average

@@BookswithEmilyFox i have a question I know you read most of the time in English. Did you heard about la guilde des ombres de Anna Triss. It's a dark fantasy but i think you can enjoy it ok I just read the first part of the first book but it's promising.
I like ready player one but the second no interest. Sorry if my English is not so good. My french is better but i dont want to upset you xD
Ton anglais est très bon! Non j’ai pas lu énormément de livres français dans les dix dernières années… je vais devoir en lire qquns bientôt!
Mine is Emily Henry's book
Haha throne of glass I felt the same way - this chick was meant to be the works best assassin?.
I like the tv show Daisy Jones and the Six, but only gave the book two stars
This round there were none that hurt too much (100% agree on Silent Patient and other mystery thrillers - well not everything can be Gone Girl or Kind of Worth Killing). But if you ever felt like it, another mystery thriller recommendation video would be nice.
Also I hate when "men"/world makes fun of women reading some smutty (totally consensual) romances, but straight up r@pe in "esteemed" (male) SF books is totally OK.
PS: I am still hurting over And then there were none.
I enjoyed Ready Player One because I’m a huge nerd but I can see why people dislike it.
Funny, the Jessica thing doesn’t really bug me - most of the weird names are associated with the planet Arrakis, but Jessica and her husband (and son) aren’t from there.
nah. can't trust you after the Agatha Christie one 🔪🔪🔪🔪
Haha we can’t agree on everything 😂💀
@@BookswithEmilyFox how dare you 🥺🥺🥺😂
I think the lesson here is don't go to a book expecting to give it five stars.
That's a half-joke. I've noticed that if I get super high expectations for something, it's more likely than not going to be a disappointment. I build up this huge expectation for whatever it is (book, movie, tv show) and eventually the media cannot live up to what I've built up in my mind.
Omg! I didn’t like Daisy Jones either. I just thought it was boring and literally all “tell” and no “show.”
😂😂😂your comments about 1984 is so true! ❤
I have to say I agree with you on these; although, I did give It 4 stars.
omg I thought I was the only one who preferred the Daisy Jones TV show over the book!
Now I need a book recommendation that does the things well that each of these books didn’t!
Rebecca was underwhelming lol.
"Skeleton of a story" sums up Daisy Jones very well.
Anxious People felt like it was really TRYING to get me to feel something, but I didn't want to lol.
Yes!! Books that try to make me feel something but don’t make me feel dead inside lol
That was me... I should have left it alone lol
I think about 70% of the books you mentioned, I also didn't like. Can you do another video "lowest rated books that are worth the time"?
