  • It's a surprisingly little known fact: 15% of couples are infertile, and 25-40% of detected pregnancies are miscarried. But no one talks about these things. Until now. Three-time cancer survivor Kara DeFrias shares her story of love, loss, and the struggles that go along with trying to conceive a child. And how a positive attitude (and sometimes wildly inappropriate humor) got her through it all.
    About Kara:
Kara DeFrias' passion for creating engaging online and offline experiences has brought her to many exciting places, including the Super Bowl, the Oscars, and most recently, to the White House as a member of the first class of Presidential Innovation Fellows (PIF). Kara currently works at Intuit, influencing the voice of TurboTax.com and empowering employees to utilize design thinking in their project work as an Innovation Catalyst. She's also executive producer for TEDxIntuit. Kara earned a BA from Elizabethtown College and graduated summa cum laude from Penn State University with a master's degree. Kara lives in San Diego, CA.
TEDxCoMo, held April 6, 2013 at the historic Missouri Theatre in Columbia, Missouri, was produced by Keith Politte and Cale Sears. Event website: TEDxCoMo.org

I hear you and I can only relate to some of it.... for me there is no reason I can not have children I am perfectly healthy and we have spent over 60 thousand dollars and have nothing but heartache to show for it. I can't even walk past the baby aisle at WalMart and see the frilly dresses or the tiny suits.

Yeah. I’m 24 and only this year went to a doctor and found out I have PCOS after of years of other doctors telling me “once you gain more weight it will come back” “be less stressed” “eat healthy”
My period may only come back after daily medication for years.

Sad story. But.... this lady is LUCKY she has enough financial freedom to hire a surrogate. That she had enough money to go through the IVF and harvest those eggs. Some women go through cervical cancer during infertility but dont have the financial means to do what she did. Their dream truly dies. They have no other option than to just surrender to it and "give up". So, in some ways... shes still luckier than most.

No child, uterine cancer when so young and having to be on hormones for the rest of her life (that's what happens when all of the female organs are removed)... Have you never heard the expression "money doesn't mean happiness"? She's just being as positive as she can.

    Being overweight also causes infertility...

I think her doctor has the ability to tell her if that is her case or not. She doesn't need you judging her.

Maybe one of the reasons she is overweight is because PCOS causes weight gain and makes losing weight more difficult because it insulin resistance
