I grew up there. Looks like somebody installed a second ladder and rebuilt the old one. I used to dive there at night to shoot fish and is my favorite swimming hole in the world. Word to the wise. If there is any swell at all stay out of the water unless you are a powerful and experienced swimmer. You will die. I saw more people taken to the hospital from here than from any other place in my life.
The bottom here is a gently sloping 25 degrees or so and it slowly drops to the abyss. There is nothing to slow the currents. When heavy swells push into the cave it becomes submerged. Rocks at the bottom of the cave which fell from the ceiling causes turbulence and the water mixes with air. Once there are air bubbles in the water you cannot swim, you simply sink. Even if the cave is not submerged the swell rises inside and when it pushes out the water tumbles down a rock ledge at the back of the cave adding the bubbles and the danger. I have pulled people from the water in the cave and along the cliff face. I swim here with a full wetsuit and 3 foot long fins with the experience of countless hours in the treacherous waters , day and night, from Ka Lae (South Point) all the way up to Honoka'a. The sea along the east coast of the Big Island is not to be taken lightly. I almost lost my life several times at Honuapo, Kings Landing, Four Miles and Onomea Bay. Besides Richardsons, Onekahakaha and Puhi Bay there are no real safe places to swim on the east side of the island. Kapoho was by far the best place to snorkel and swim on the Puna side but the volcano took it back and it is now gone. I know the sea looks like fun but I am here to tell you it is absolutely treacherous. I grew up in Hilo and know the sea well. I have swam with whales, dolphins, seals, sharks and everything else out there. To do what I have done almost cost me my life over and over. Be very careful and think twice before swimming outside barrier reefs and sheltered pools. The sea can easily take you.
