So I think the Big Island is actually the best island. Because it’s so big and yet small town. When staying on the west side north of Kona the desert area I had no allergies! It was like a perfect paradise, dryer, still tropical, beaches, perfect temps. I hope in retirement spend at least 50% of the year there. Blessings

If your gonna move to Big Island... Learn about the history of Hawaii and her culture. Respect goes a very long way here. Life here is laid back and everything runs on Hawaii time😂. Most of all learn the do's and dont's, follow the rules and please dont tresspass on any land that is marked KAPU... It means FORBIDDEN/ KEEP OUT. You get what you give out. As far as marine life goes look from a distance but remember ALL marine life is protected by law. Big Island is a very spiritual place. Either you will feel at home here or the island will send you packing back to mainland. Almost forgot... If your not a fan of giant cenepedes, fire ants, rats, mosquitos, slugs and spiders, then you probably wont like living here😂. Oh and lets not forget the flash floods... Its pretty common place and to be expected living on the Big Island.
Thanks a lot. I saw other videos of real estate brokers trying to concentrate only on the sales pitch for properties in the 5 to 10 million range. Even when pushed for specific responses, they expertly avoid the bad news and just give the sugar coated side. It is their livelihood. This is where your insights become so valuable.

❤ Love your video. It is very informative. I don’t think you mentioned tsunamis. I was there a few years ago during a tsunami warning and had no clue what to do or even to be aware. Thanks to a local friend I became informed. I agree with you that respect goes a long way. There is no reason to come to Hawaii and be disrespectful but some people just don’t get it.
Thank you for such an informative video. I have visited the Big Island 3 times and loved it. I loved the historic sights, walking across the lava fields and going on an ocean lava tour - up close and personal. I have stayed in Kona and Hilo and will never forget my visits. I am too old now and I was lucky to visit when I was somewhat younger. Aloha Nui and Mahalo, Maly.

I was a Kamaaina for nearly 20 years on The Hilo/Puna districts of the Big Island. I love Hawaii and it's music culture and natural beauty. Number factor that forced me to leave was AFFORDABILITY. Hawaii has the highest cost of living in America. Crime was a bit high and too many locals strung out on Ice/Crystal meth. Don't know how the scene is now. I left in 2005.
The video of mongoose is misleading.... those are meerkats which Hawaii does not have and are not allowed in the State of Hawaii. Also, we see more chickens and wild pigs in urban areas.

I thank you for adding to the conversation. Chickens are everywhere, I will say pigs are found in areas were the property backs to vacant land and areas that have huge acreage.

Hawaii is already expensive so when we get a bunch of people move here and buy up the homes it drives the prices up and makes it even more hard for us to afford a home. On top of that we live on an island where land is limited. With that being said. Not all vacant land is made for development. There is cultural purpose to lands being and staying vacant

It does suck. I live in norcal and could never move back to where l was born. Rents are 8000 dollars a month and little hones are 2.5 million dollars. We have to redesign our thoughts on what homes are. I was reading in Japan they got around this problem and now houses are more realistically priced. I do believe that in the 70's when real estate agents started convincing people that homes were an investment and not a place to live is when we really started dealing with this problem. I do remember when l was in a bar drinking with some agents back in the late 70's these people were really estate agents talking about how they made a bunch of money over lunch just by selling a house to eachother to raise up the price. So they bought a 30,000 dollar home and at the end of lunch it now sold for 60,000. A doubling of the price over lunch.

You get that everywhere. What amuses me is when white people there oppose newcomers. However do I honestly care if the locals like me being there? No. Not at all
It’s expensive to live here. Food, gas and other products are expensive . , it’s best if you trade and grow your own veggies etc. . things are far away so car mileage adds up fast. There are poor health care options here compared to Oahu and the mainland so major health issues are a real challenge . vog and lava dust and some pollens from mangoes creates major allergies. Earthquakes and tsunamis are not such a big issue except if your property is damaged by them. Don’t live close to the volcano. Beach erosion is an issue at some benches . Pigs and goats are a problem especially when you drive and turkeys and quail are running around. There are really no good restaurants here. Oahu has much better restaurants with good prices. Koki frogs maybe not bother you. Be careful when hiring contractors as they take a long time and do shabby work if not reputable. Be careful driving at night due to a lack of street lights and drunk drugged up drivers. Certain places like down south are know as the Wild West due tu the high crime rate ,. Tourist places seem to be places where minor crimes like theft occur so be safe . Real estate is too expensive here due to covid and mainlanders and investors who bought up properties to get cheaper investments and to get away from Covid etc. The public schools here have a bad reputation but there are private school options.
I suppose you came with the wrong attitude. I live in California, however whenever I come and visit family the people are always friendly, maybe because I live with the aloha I was brought up with. A local will check you if you are respectful. It’s never happened to me, however I’ve seen it happen.
Just don’t agree. I was welcomed and encouraged to be a part of. Maybe because I am older. I studied‘ ōlelo, hula kahiko, Hawaiian learning methods, protocol, traditional gardening methods, and learned to eat local. Still not good at it, but love having the opportunity to try. Aloha nui loa.

Big island was a cool trip but a bit of a letdown: 1)most beaches arent swim friendly. Tons of rocks and heavy crashing water 2) food is not great. Nothing impressive for local foods. Doninos will be the best pizza you can get also 3) the views didnt impress me much. The sunsets on my farm are absolutely magical, hawaiin horizons are a bit boring. I had a fun trip, but not certain kd move or buy a place without like winning a lottery or something. 500k for small houses sucks, but thats not locals fault. Their government sold them out
Respect. Often practiced as racism. Like all of the Hawaiian islands there is a healthy dose of reverse racism against mainlanders who are white. Not all of course.
One thing I can say is the racism and bigotry are a LOT LESS in the Hawaiian Islands. Here on the mainland, if you are not white and live around mostly whites, you will experience some racism. I went to UH Manoa, and there was a lot of racism by the Japanese, but probably less than a person would experience at a mainland university.
We all know the real reasons why these videos are posted. But to post these reasons not to move, there is not cutting it. I've lived in CA=earthquake/fires/high cost living. Oregon= Volcanoes/earthquakes, known as the ring of fire. Midwest= Tornado alley. Lower south= Is hurricanes galore. The East coast= Blizzards. What's new! As for critters! Not a issue. Did I mention I lived in Iceland=real Volcanoes. The land of fire and ice. So! Wouldn't you rather have someone who respects the culture or the wealthy wealthy,who are really destroying the islands?
I get vog from the numerous aggressive, unbalanced, unmedicated mental people in my neighborhood. Therefore, I'm going to take my chance and move there. I dont have to worry about the water because I'm allergic to salt water and shark bites.
Do not-------Do not-----Do not move to Hawaii. On the Hilo side they will not like you...because you are from the mainland. I was there 14 yrs. I know.
Why discourage people from moving there? Instead, maybe encourage people to treat the islands and locals with respect, while advising that the locals have a bias against them due to the history of the relationship with Hawaii and mainland. It's like you're saying "don't move to the southern US as a black person they'll hate you there" rather than "hey while I may not advise it, if you do move to the south here's some things to look for".

Most people do not know the history of the islands or that Hawaii of December 7th was not declared a State until 1950. Do not expect them to change their minds nor hearts.

That is all true, lol so many friends got shipped back mainland. I was blessed to be accepted by the Big island it it feels so much like home.
One side hot and dry, one side rainy. Punaluʻu beach is a must see! If you buy bread, store it in the fridge, or it will get moldy in one day.

Innovations is a charter school not private. It is free but they use a lottery system and it is very hard to get in.

Property taxes on the big island ARE MORE THAN DOUBLE the other islands. Absolutely NOT worth it given that Kona is a dump full of homeless people.

We all know the real reasons why these videos are posted. But to post these reasons not to move, there is not cutting it. I've lived in CA=earthquake/fires/high cost living. Oregon= Volcanoes/earthquakes, known as the ring of fire. Midwest= Tornado alley. Lower south= Is hurricanes galore. The East coast= Blizzards. What's new! As for critters! Not a issue. Did I mention I lived in Iceland=real Volcanoes. The land of fire and ice. So! Wouldn't you rather have someone who respects the culture or the wealthy wealthy,who are really destroying the islands?

Do not-------Do not-----Do not move to Hawaii. On the Hilo side they will not like you...because you are from the mainland. I was there 14 yrs. I know.
Why discourage people from moving there? Instead, maybe encourage people to treat the islands and locals with respect, while advising that the locals have a bias against them due to the history of the relationship with Hawaii and mainland. It's like you're saying "don't move to the southern US as a black person they'll hate you there" rather than "hey while I may not advise it, if you do move to the south here's some things to look for".
