  • ABS and speedo sensors are totally different things but they are based on the same idea. See the sensors` parts, their operation explained.
    For more details search electromagnetism and Michael Faraday`s discoveries (1820`s - 1840`s) on electric induction and electric motors. Yes, stuff`s been around a while now...

    Actually, as far as I know, there is no coil inside that speedo sensor; it picks up magnetic pulses in the same way the ABS sensor does, their parts are just organized in a different way.

    Dude you will not believe what happened. So my speedo cable as we were talking about before, was broken and it wasn't working for quite a long time. recently when I've just left my bike in the garage for a few weeks. After I picked up I give it a good scrub clean with the jet wash polish it didn't do any maintenance job knowing that I need to change the cable I recharge the battery as it was completely flat I stuck my bike and I have driven to work. All of the sudden I could see that my speed was showing back on the dashboard. I haven't done any mechanical works on it removes the front wheel or anything like this it just repaired itself somehow magically maybe knowing that haven't got money to buy new cable. However now I'm scared to take off the front wheel so you won't break again but I know I have to do because my left front fork is leaking and I have to change the seals and top it up with oil. Maybe I'll do the video about this as well

      AdamLondon01 The end of the speedo sensor is a copper coil in a plastic housing. The slotted ring generates pulses of electricity in it. If crud covers the coil, the magnetic effect wont take place, no signal will be generated. Also, if the distance between the ring and coil increase (loose screw) no signal. Not a lot can go wrong there, just go ahead and service the fork, tighten everything. A flat battery might also affect the ECU`s ability to translate the speed signal and power the LCD.
      Thanks for sharing. What year and model is your bike?

    I'm glad someone explained me basic principal of magnetic speed sensors! Well unfortunately I lost the magnetic part of sensor while puncture removal and its nearly impossible to find new one. I need to buy whole speedometer set for simple magnetic ring! Can u suggest me some alternative to make it work?

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don`t need new magnetic speed sensor. Get an old/used one from a crashed/project bike. Google something.
      Could also glue the magnet together, it will work enough if aligned meticulously for circularity and flatness.

      theoverengineer - Okay! That was my second plan but it's bit hard to get same bike in trash. I'll try with this one only. Thanks for suggestion.

  • @AdamLondon01

    Wouldn't that be same effect as actually driving bike? Any way I've tested that way but still not showing speed or counting miles. Any other way I can test speed sensor alone?

    I have a 2015 Zx6R. After changing the brake pads, brake fluid, and tires, the ABS light remains on. When riding, there is a loss of power and the tachometer/speedometer is inaccurate. ECU reflash, new rear speedometer cable did not fix the issue. Do you know what is causing the issue? Thanks!

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the sensors at the wheel are absolutely geometrically intact (not a ding, aligned squarely, no magnetic "fur" on them, clean) and the connector pins at the ABS cable ends and cables themselves are fine, then ECU glitches. Check the cables and sensors, then probably Kawasaki dealer is the next option.

  • @AdamLondon01
    @AdamLondon01 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    So if I disconnect the cable for a speedo meter is there any way that I can check that it's working

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AdamLondon01 Yes. If you can put a stick across the signal pick-up unit that catches the claws and spin by hand the instrument should have a number when the ignition is on.

    Hey,
    Can u help me to choose whether what kind of sensors to use in an ABS?
    Hall sensors, Magneto resistive sensors or tachometer sensors?

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on what signal the control module is built to process. Hall sensor is powered, so if that doesn't get supplied, it's out.

    • @theoverengineer

      AdamLondon01 Just spin the thing that can turn inside, it`ll work.

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AdamLondon01 Ok,a few hours later I see ambiguity. So, if the tab is rotated inside the sensor there should be numbers when the ignition is on. If there are no numbers the sensor might be wrong, or the cable, or the spedometer.
      Disconnect the speedo cable from the spedometer and rotate the magnet`s tabs inside the sensor. Measure the signal voltage generated at the end of the cable, there should be some. If there isn`t, order a new. The Suzuki service manual has all the pictures and correct voltage readings.
      I don`t have a working one, I can`t take measurements, the bike filmed got stolen 3 years ago, so if anyone can chip in and help out do so.

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AdamLondon01 Service manual says (Electrical system page 8-35): "If the speedometer, odometer or trip meter does not function properly, inspect the speed sensor and connection of coupler 1. If the speed sensor and connection are all right, replace the meter with a new one."
      Speed sensor inspection:
      "Connect the four 1.5 V dry cell batteries, a 10 kOhm resistance and the Voltmeter to the speed sensor lead wire coupler as shown. (See illustration) Lift and turn the front wheel and check that voltage varies between 0 - 6 V. If any abnormal condition is noted, replace the sensor."

      theoverengineer oh that's better. So I've done everything from diagram, and the results i had was slightly inconclusive for me i think. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The book says; when connected the circuit as per picture and than check MCT ( Multi Circuit Tester ) for the V (Voltage) should be 0V. Then when spinning the front wheel and the V should vary between 0-6 V. And my results where; when connected everything and checked MCT it showed straight away 5.77V, and than when I spin the wheel it vary between 5.46V - 4.12V any advice?
      BTW thanks for helping me out with this.

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AdamLondon01 No worries. The sensor is probably faulty, that`s why it doesn`t behave like described. The 5.77V is coming (leaking, due to a short-circuit) from the 4 x 1.5V batteries, in this case 4 x 1.4425V.
      But just to make sure: Sensor has a 3-wire connector, hot, neutral, ground. In the diagram, battery (neg) is at the middle pin marked black with white tracer. If the sensor supplier did not have the exact color of wire, they might use anything else at hand, like Aprilia: th-cam.com/video/ydBvgh5HKGI/w-d-xo.html PDF is also about 2004 model year, whatever continent, there are differences is wiring.
      Another wire is orange with red tracer is the ground, and the voltmeter + resistor are on the neutral line. Colors might differ, principle stays the same.
      Get a new, check it out electronically, should work as per S. Manual`s description.

    My speedometer is acting up and I think beacuse that magnet is already worn out, can I disassamble the sensor and rotate it with a hand to know if its working? Will it show speed?

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Magnets don't fail, spin with a drill. Instrument is likely broken, cable might be defective, sensor end is usually fine.

      Electronics fail intermittently, like you're experiencing. Probably in the gauge in the dash someplace. Here is an example on an Aprilia th-cam.com/video/-N5ZrqWZrQw/w-d-xo.html

    In this case, if the ABS sensor doesn't send pulses to the computer for some reason, and the computer thinks that the wheel is skidding, you would never be able to brake!!

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lack of signal does not disable the brake, designers thought about that.
